Never judge a book by its cover, my first impression was this video wouldn’t be much help or show anything I haven’t already seen in other videos. I was extremely wrong, this is the absolute best and most helpful 4L60e removal video out there, I’ve watched almost all of them, this video needs a award, thanks so much guys
I can't thank you guys enough. I dropped mine, had it rebuilt, and installed it by myself, in my driveway. Must have watched this video 20 times. I don't know that I could not have done it without you. Can't believe you lifted that transfer case straight in. I had to finagle it in with a second jack, and almost dropped it on my head.
I just put a used 4l60e in my 99 gmc ext. Cab 2wd in my garage. I did it 100% myself except getting it out of the back of my other truck. After that just me 5'5" 140lbs no problem. Thanks for the video helped quite a bit.
I once put a clutch in a old 62 chevy truck 4x4 by myself at the time I was weight lifting. That transmission was too heavy along with the transfercase even the clutch was heavy. Alot of bleeding knuckles later i had to use a engine hoist through the cab just to lift in place.
Thank you for your detailed information on removal of transmission and transfer case. My Dad used to guide me thru the process but unfortunately he passed away. I'm very grateful for your thorough explanation.
Great video. Straight to the point with no unnecessary chatter or goofing off. Good explanation from start to finish. Now I'm confident about dropping my transmission. Thank you.
Pro tip with the front driveshaft: Disconnect it from the front axle then leave it hanging until after the trans cross-member and exhaust are off. Then it's super-easy to get out. Also, remove the crossmember before undoing the exhaust.
@@Az56818 The exhaust leans on the frame x-member on a 4x4. The Y-pipe doesn't come out with the trans x-member in place. Believe me, I've tried!!! :-)
If you take the torque converter out of the transmission, it's amazing how light the transmission gets!!!! If this is something you expect to be doing even every couple years, I recommend buying a transmission jack. They are worth the price but there is a bit of a learning curve, especially if the place you are working is not completely flat. I recently bought one and I'm kicking myself for not getting one years and years ago.

With the correct size hose you can use a vacuum brake bleeder to remove most of the transmission pans fluid, so it doesn’t make a big mess. slip the hose down the transmission fill tube. It won’t get all the fluid, but almost a 4 quarts or more.
I'm in the process of doing this in my driveway - just wanted to add that you can access the exhaust flange nut on the drivers side SO much easier if you remove the wheel well dust cover and go at it from the side. My first mission with my 08 was to replace stuck lifters before tackling the trans, and I was able to access the exhaust nut real easy (and the entire passenger side of the engine) by removing the tire and well jacket. This way you don't have to fight an O2 sensor.
This is a great video. He definitely made that transfer case look lighter than it was. I managed it but I didn't look smooth at all like he did. It took me a while to figure out how to get that top bolt out of the transfer case. I ended up buying a stubby gear wrench. That made it oretty easy.

All depends on the condition of the used transmission
This is a great video. Super helpful. Thanks guy 🤙🏻 well done 👍🏻
So what year transmission 4l60 change I got a 06 sierra and seeing what years fit it
Excellent job in all aspects!
Love your vibe kid, subbed 1 minute in bro
Awesome step by step explanation.
How come when I pulled off my rear drive shaft my front driveshaft wasn’t spinning freely like yours?
I don't have a flange on my exhaust how can I get it out of my way other than cutting it
Great Tutorial! Was curious though on how you supported the engine after removing the tranny. Is the motor balanced on the motor mounts?
Did any special swivels or anything make this easier to get the exhaust bolts out
Great video. What size wrenches do I need for the cross member bolts?
Hello
Can this transmission be swapped from a 4.8 to a 5.3 liter chevy 1500?
What size was the wrench ?
Man this was an awesome and very thorough video!
Thank you!
Great video! Any concerns with leaving the transmission hanging after you removed the transmission mount and crossmember?
Was there room to replace the torque converter when it was still on the jack?
This is very informative. I'm on my way outside right now
😁😀
Is it the same with a 07 new body style
Great video! Thank you for all your efforts to show us a detailed way to do this.
im having one hell of a time trying to get the 3 nuts off the exhaust on each side 1 is rounded off any tips would be great i sprayed the hell out of them
One of them was a major pain for us too. We heated it up and got it off.
That was awesome. Great job.
I know it’s been years but a complete list of tools used would be. Immensely helpful.
I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 and we got the starter replaced recently but still having other problems. Recently I found that the transmission is the problem now. If you have information on the accurate cost of a new transmission please let me know!!! We tend to get ripped off so often because we don't know the cost of the fix. So if we can avoid that, it would be awesome lol.
How many hours did this take?
For us it took about 2 hours
Great video, Thank you.
This dude got the strongest neck muscles. my head would’ve been hanging off my neck after laying the cardboard down.
Excellent video!!
I'll be doing this to my 04 Avalanche this spring. Thanks for the video
