I've probably listened to this song more than 100 times. No kidding. I used to be a huge music fan, but then I discovered Tesseract. Nothing is the same anymore. Your drumming rewrote everything I knew about music. I love you guys.
Yep. First time I heard them, years ago....changed my whole concept of drumming and of music as a whole. Nothing prior has ever been the same since. Talent on a whole different level.
@jaypostones sir I must say, your drumming (and tesseract as a whole) have changed my life. I've always loved music especially metal. Our of any band I listen to, tesseract is the only band I can listen to over and over again and not lose any interest. There's people out there that depend on your music. Please, do not stop doing what you do.
I dont know why but with each kick drum hit I feel how my headphones vibrate on my head. I clearly feel kicking/tickling of headphones pads. And only with this particular mix/video, tho its not fatiguing to my ears at all. Quite amusing.
Listened to this album non-stop when it first came out. I kind of liked it then, but I've always been more of a One guy. But I have to say all these years later it occurs to me that the main riff of this song is one of the most massive and nasty grooves I've ever heard in my life. James Brown himself would have been in awe of this
I'm desperate to hear the meter on the "Survival" after-chorus part, where it gets kinda shifted with triplet feel! Great consistent drumming though, as always
It can be used for timing as well. At 3:17 he does a RLLRLLRLLRLL pattern with R's on the cymbals and L's as ghost notes. It helps keep the R's in time as well as add body to the drumming for that part. It can be pretty subjective when to use ghost notes, so don't sweat it and just go for it!
jvstndrvms thank you!! I ask because I'm not a drummer. But a writer. And I know that a lot of ghost notes can be paradiddles and such but to use them for timing actually helps so much. Thank you!
It's really all in the feel for me, sometimes like in Nocturne for example it keeps you on track leaving no "dead space" it feels weird playing it without the ghost notes. Most of the time it's just stuff I naturally add in, when you listen to people like Jay and Matt garstka, it kind of becomes infused in you
The metronome sounds like its going really fast yet the song seems so slow? Can someone explain this to me, I want to learn to play "djent" to a metronome.
They all have separate clicks, depending on what each of them need. At some points the drummer has up to 3 click tracks at the same time, to serve as reference points
Nah, the ears are just for fashion reasons :D I have a mix pretty close to this live audio. Clear drums, bit of everything else, and this exact metronome.
Well damn!!! This is amazing!! Don't know how you do it....that would get really distracting and quite annoying to me...I believe they could do it with out the click....
mark gueren tesseract is one of the most talented bands out there but I think even them would struggle without a metronome .. most of the bands nowadays play with in-ear clicks so thats nothing special! Its not only to keep in time but also to stay together with everyone else from the band because as a drummer myself I can tell you that its very loud playing live while sitting behind the drumms so to keep everything together the click is very necessary!
Lill Dan oh no doubt...I may be older than you because when I was playing...lol...there were no click track s...you HAD to rely on the drummer.... Maybe that's why my old drummer would always play too fast....but I totally agree with you!!! TesseracT s music is Soo technical and amazing....I'm sure it would be damn near impossible without a click...
mark gueren haha well time changes and yeah if I was the drummer for such a technical advanced band like tesseract I‘d probably rely on a click as well haha
I'm using a clicktrack as well when I play live, but I can't stand a click which emphasises the first hit, just as yours. To me it's just distracting and I hate it ^^ I rather count by myself :D
Belle illustration de la solitude du batteur... Le problème avec le clic, c'est qu'on finit par l'entendre même quand il n'est plus la. Super morceau de Tesseract, sinon
I heard the metronome will be opening its own channel and will start posting videos where it's beeping to Jay's playing to stay accurate.

That guy at 0:36 is feeling the groove!
i was standing behind him, that dude went totally nuts from second 1 xdd
I must have been standing just a little to your right madboi! what a killer set.
I don't blame him! That was 100% me when I saw them in NYC!
0:36 the correct way to listen this song
dude was straight up windmill/headbanging at 30s LOL
It’s in 4/4 omg I cant believe it here I am thinking that it must be in like 71/94 or something. NOPE.
Landry Saathoff it’s in 12/8 homeslice
Polyrhythms :) You can write and fit the main riffs completely different if u want
This is amazing live score execution

Full pro. Your playing it's a new story in music history.
Nailed it. Nails it every time.
the metronome fits oddly satisfying to the song :D
That's usually the point.
and I thought it is used for timing things.. stupid me :D
+Julian Kreiser it is used for the timing, time signature changes and also tempo changes. It supposed to fit sine it was made for the song haha.

Come to Brasil Jay!
Show 💪🤘
Is there a sample snare I hear?
Jay, do you listen to the same metronome in your ears during playing songs?
Yes - this is the metronome we have live
"We"? I heard in some gear video you (the whooe band) may have different metronomes going on at the same time, for different musicians.
No, they'll all have the same one. Perhaps different levels on different instruments sent to their ears, but they'll all have the same click track.
Daniel Calderon I heard that too, they have different clic

Yay you're back, re subd :)
Cool video and great playing Jay! Do the other guys listen to the click too?
Could you get some of this for the Altered State work? It's so addictive listening with the underlying beat!
DRUM MIDI COVER ruclips.net/video/QNh2Z1Gm4jM/видео.html
I prefer using a click that has no stress beat as it doesn't lock itself to a time signature and obviously still keeps my band in time
I wanted to see Of mind - nocturne with metronome...help us to save from the odd signature!
finally, new ears
Is the mix or the metronome louder in your monitors?
This is a fairly accurate representation of what I have in my ears. I make small changes to the mix each day to account for the differences on stage.
@@JayTesseracT can we expect more metronome drum cams, maybe even on stream? I'd love to hear the metronome for the uncommon time signature songs!
I always thought the main/intro riff was in 3/4 but I guess they play it at 4/4
I really like that metronome. Adds like a musical element to the song. Weird, but great!
Hey Jay just a quick question. Do you splice the signal from your transmitter to your phone for the met or does the Engineer run the metronome?
DRUM MIDI COVER ruclips.net/video/QNh2Z1Gm4jM/видео.html
I need to learn when and why you add ghost notes.
Gothic Octopus in between certain spaces/notes. to add body to the particular sound of music, or just in general.
Ben Hedwall You right you right. I forgot timing. Totally a factor.

Matt Tucker it is in 16th note subdivision.
what is the BPM?
240 BPM.
420BPM
024BPM
although most people in the crowd are dead and stupid, those few doors in the front who are crankin it to this song are fucking on point!
Is just the drummer hearing the metronom or the whole band?
I saw Jay say that it is the whole band that listens to the metronome.
They all have separate clicks, depending on what each of them need. At some points the drummer has up to 3 click tracks at the same time, to serve as reference points
What bpm is this ?
What time signature are these? If it could be known :D would really appreciate it
im rolling on the floor
Jerrymonyor 6/8 for whenever the opening riff plays and 4/4 for every other part of the song
Sick drumming man, but why would you not count the intro in 3?
The guitars are in 3 but the drums aren't
Does Jay have anything in his ears as he's playing the drums?
Nah, the ears are just for fashion reasons :D
