TESSERACT - Dystopia Drum Video

  • My first live recorded performance of 'Dystopia', the first track from TESSERACT's new album Polaris.
    Recorded and mixed by Al Heslop at Creative Control Studios, Bracknell - www.creativecontrolstudio.com
    Polaris is available worldwide through Kscope and eOne music:
    US - www.merchconnectioninc.com/collections/tesseract
    EU - www.bandstores.co.uk/shop/tesseractstore/
    A huge thank you to all of the companies I work with who helped to make this happen:
    Crush Drums and percussion - Sublime Bubinga 10, 12, 13 and 16 toms, 22" kick.
    Planet Earth 14x6.5 Teak Stave snare
    Sabian cymbals
    Vic Firth 5b Sticks
    Evans drumheads
    Porter and Davies
    This is a very special recording for me as not only is it the first live video of a new TesseracT track but it's the first time I've recorded a drum that I've made myself.
    I've never felt qualified as a drummer to talk in depth about my drum sound. I've always just gone with what I've known and not really explored the sounds of different woods, shell depths and diameters, bearing edges, hardware and all the other tiny variables which go into giving a drum it's signature sound.
    So I spent the past eighteen months obsessing over and researching drum making methods. I decided to make my own stave drum from scratch. I teamed up with an old and very good friend and together we have made something I'm extremely proud of. It's a 14" x 6.5" Teak stave shell, 20mm thick with a 45 degree bearing edge. I used 3mm triple flange hoops and a Trick throwoff, and to make it even cooler it used to be a school science desk!
    I'm most certainly at the start of a new journey into the world of drums and while I feel like I've learned a lot already, I know this drum is just a drop in the ocean, on a planet, in a galaxy, in a universe, in a multiverse of possibilities.

    I'm not at all surprised by the description of this video, Your eighteen months of obsession and research have yielded a monumental result. The snare sound on Polaris is the best I've ever heard in my life. It's like Zeus's bubble wrap, holy hell what a cannon. I think if you hit it hard enough you might open up a portal to another dimension.

    I dont realy like to compare drummers but postones has a knack for the same thing as Jason Rullo from Symphony X and that is the ability to make the beat sound simple and complicated at the same time and making smooth transitions with clear accents that are easy to comprehend for non drummers. Simply beutifull playing.

    Thank you for sharing and i cant wait to hear more!

    I've always been confused by this Jay - do you write your drum parts, or does Acle? Acle is credited as composer in the album notes, but I'm not sure to what extent that means.

    • @LetsGetPissedMate
      @LetsGetPissedMate 9 лет назад

      +Jonas Wellingham I think it was on a Reddit AMA that they said Acle writes them and then Jay just learns them.

    • @deliciousmentalfudge
      @deliciousmentalfudge 9 лет назад

      I did think it was that way, but I've never been sure.

    • @JayTesseracT
      @JayTesseracT  9 лет назад +151

      Acle writes the beat ideas when he's writing the music and I interpret them for the most part. Over time I try to turn them into my own.
      This is the first time since 'One' that we've actually jammed to get some ideas. Hexes was born out of a morning jam down in Devon earlier in the year and I can personally tell the process was different as it has a very different vibe.

    Any particular master you've been understanding polyrhythms from? I had a lot of workshops with Dan Foord from Sikth many a year ago discussing these kinds of rhythms and I've begun to love them a lot. Still worshipping Thomas Haake as the master but sir you are begin to become a lovely little idle in my rhythm obsessions. Truly remarkable understanding of rhythm and feeling, love it. Learned and seen a huge improvement in my own music from playing and learning your stuff.
    Where did it come from though? Enlighten me oh rhythmical master.
