It's so true. I've been a fan of Tesseract for so long, and their music is such a ubiquitous part of my life at this point that it's easy to forget this band (and genre) are pretty niche.
Something absolutely incredible about Jays playing is the subtlety he brings like the ghost notes on the snare. A lot of metal drummers are like athletes and human drum machines and what they do is incredibly impressive but also very direct. Jay has a lot of texture to the way he plays.
Tesseract reaches that perfect balance of mindblowing rhythms that groove flawlessly. I guess it can't possibly be easy. Way too many bands try so hard with complex rhythms that they just end up sound messy. Tesseract songs just feel SO GOOD.
It amazes me bands like Tesseract and Meshuggah (and many others I'm sure) can remember their songs live (even with in-ear cues). They're so complex. A 4-bar repeating verse-chorus is about my level :) Jay is awesome.
You don't pick up a guitar one day and immediatly write a 9 minute technical polyrythmic metal banger. You build to that over many years, with that you build your memory, muscle memory, familiarity with all the concepts and seperate parts. By the time you are writing these types of songs, it is not so crazy and mysterious to yourself anymore as it might sound to a listener. And I don't mean that they are obviously familiar with their own written material, but also all the little tricks and methods that make up these types of songs. They become normal tools in the box, so to speak. Just as a 4 bar repeating verse-chorus is understandable for you (because we grow up with that kinda thing in the west) these polyrithmic parts have become normal to this type of musician over many years. And ofcourse, next to all that... a lot of repetition ;) Just some insight from a metal musician, if that helps at all.
Periphery and Gojira are another couple of bands where I swear the only way to play their songs is just off of feel. You'll melt your brain trying to remember the sheet music for it.
Most of these bands start practicing or rehearsing their material like 2 months in advance for a tour. Polyphia mentioned doing that too. It's just very technical stuff, no(t a lot of) room for improv, and they need to be really tight. They're professionals, they spend time to make sure their shows can sound incredible.
I have been learning from Jay for the last few years now and I can without a doubt say that he has become my greatest insipiration as a drummer. His style is right there in the realm of style I always wanted myself, and Jay has blessed the drumming world by sharing his knowledge in such an accessible way that people can learn some awesome philosophies and skills that help take our ability to speak on the drums to the next level. Jay is a great person, and incredible mentor. Highly underrated 😩
22:20 love the alternating headbanging between Amos and Acle lol. Jay is on an insane level of rhythmic and groove interpretation. I'm primarily a guitarist, but I learned one Tesseract on drums and it took so long to figure out his fills and accents, but he does that stuff so comfortably on many songs. Sometimes a pattern feels like it's not gonna make sense, but it lines up in the end. That's also the benefit of using computers to write some of this stuff, as Jay mentioned.
I can't say it loud enough: THANK YOU DRUMEO, for videos in THAT quality to help us drummers and bring so much different informations of different drummers in different styles. This is such a helpful support and never ending inspiration. Thank you again and again!
I absolutely love when I see these crazy players who are super successful who aren’t always dropping so many rudiment names or these crazy warm ups, etc. this dude feels just like “one of us” regular guys
@@tobiaswinter1358I think they just meant fanbase wise. TesseracT has a pretty nicely sized fan base comparatively to other bands in the scene, and they’re very passionate. Most bands in general though can hardly afford to live in general. It’s a rough business.
Jay has been one of my favorite drummers since I first heard Concealing Fate on RUclips - I've been watching for him to show up here. The ways he holds down the underlying pulse amidst the conversation of everything else and the openness of his drumming have been amazing insights for my own practicing (not to mention the left foot groove and how key it is to his playing).
Thank you for doing this video. I have a signed Tesseract drum skin on my wall in my office. This band has been part of my life since the moment I heard the Concealing Fate EP. Post Fellsilent. Amazing interview and explanations. Thank you Drumeo!
I caught one of his drum sticks at the dallas show recently, my first drum stick ever! Was seriously the coolest way to end such an epic show. Loved every minute of my first tesseract show 😁
I saw Tesseract on the Sonder tour, and they were and still are BY FAR the best-sounding band I've ever seen live. It's rare that a live situation sounds better than the clinical perfection of a studio cut, but every note was CRUSHING. They really have it dialed; if you ever have a chance to see them live, go get your mind blown.
Great watch! Saw them when they came through Dallas at The Granada. The way Jay pivots his hands while playing cymbals is unique to him. Other drummers do it but not as dominantly. It’s functional and it looks so smooth and effortless while playing. Cool that he touched on that style in the video.
Had the pleasure of meeting the band when they came to Tampa, FL a month ago. Jay is as authentic in person as he seems in any video he is ever in online.
Really enjoyed this! Being a fan of Jay and Tesseract helps, then the format, the insights we get was super inspiring and I loved every second of this video.
The fact that he doesn't practice on an actual kit at home blew my mind. The feel of an e-kit vs an acoustic kit is a big difference for me. Jay Postones and II from Sleeptoken are my favorite drummers right now. They've just opened my eyes to a different world of drumming. I hope I get to be on their level someday.
🥁 Jay Postones was replaced by Mike Maylan ( 🥁 of monument ) for the event , since postones chose to stay in Texas due to necessary two weeks isolation from COVID-19 pandemic. On 27 August 2021 , an audio version of portals was released as the band's second live album.
This is the most elegant drummer out there. Also the best Meshuggah type player. Im amazed most people don't know him. He is the first who reinvented djent on drums.
This was great! I was not familiar with them before, however i will be checking them out now, great sound. Interested to see the "War of Being" video game too, gotta check that out! 😊
Can confirm your own pillow makes a huge difference on tour. I've toured with the given bunk pillows and they generally suck if you're used to a hard/foam pillow like me. Bringing your own makes the sleep much more enjoyable.
I had the 12 week mentorship with Jay.. HIGHLY Recommended. I became a much better drummer. He is insanely good and such a cool dude. I'm so happy to see this special with him.
Tesseract is an amazing band! And Jay an incredible drummer! Textures (they're back!) and Stef Broks also amazing! Going to check them out live (again) next year. Maybe Ray Hearne in a next video? 😀
LOVE seeing Jay here, man. This dude is one of the craziest drummers that a lot of people ain’t heard of yet 🏆🔥
It's so true. I've been a fan of Tesseract for so long, and their music is such a ubiquitous part of my life at this point that it's easy to forget this band (and genre) are pretty niche.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
He's also every bit as nice a guy as he seems.
The band is fantastic! Jay is a phenomenal drummer!
@@JayTesseracTwell done homie 🤘🏻
One of the most underrated drummers.
Agreed
Great band, too. Their sound is the combination of so many bands put together.
Whoever edited this , did a banger of a job \m/

Have you tried it? Even if you don't play - don't discount yourself :) You might be thoroughly surprised at what you are capable of!

Even the fans have these songs memorize. These dudes also practice more than you could imagine also during the recording process.

Does he teach online?
@@matenorth In case you hadn't found out, he does have a drumming masterclass course that he offers online.

Damn, you guys keep getting more awesome! Amazing to see Jay here doing something like this!
Saw the first show of the tour and they were already so locked in. It was an absolute blast. Jay is an inspiration for sure!
Saw TesseracT live in Manchester this past weekend - and Jay absolutely blew me away, such an incredible performance!
I absolutely love when I see these crazy players who are super successful who aren’t always dropping so many rudiment names or these crazy warm ups, etc. this dude feels just like “one of us” regular guys
Unfortunately bands like Tesseract aren't super successful. They can barely live off of touring, yet alone CD sales/streaming.
He may look and sound like a regular guy, but he's an Alien Cyborg Octopus from the same planet Danny Carey came from

Amazing to hear that he was inspired by textures - another favorite band of mine
It was an absolute treat to meet Jay on this past tour. I've been following him for some time and one of my most inspirational drummers.

I was at that show! I saw you catch that stick!! I was a little jealous I must say. Amazing show!!
Editing on this was PHENOMENAL. The transitions between songs were flawless *chef kiss*
Love Jay he deserves way more credit
the editing on this is great, whoever did it deserves a raise

I was at that show too! Best band I’ve ever seen live, hands down. Definitely going back.
We need al whole drumeo series of Jau Postones, first time, lessons, interview on the studio, performance... everything!!! :D
Can't wait to see them next month. Jay is so overlooked

What a talent! Thanks for this. 👊🏼
Fantastic drummer and a lovely video format to watch!
Thank you for this!!!! I am now more excited than ever to see you guys headline😍😍😍😍
This was Fantastic! Thanks for putting this all together!
Went to one of his drum clinics before a tesseract show in Denver, one of the coolest dudes and best drummers.
Really enjoyed this! Being a fan of Jay and Tesseract helps, then the format, the insights we get was super inspiring and I loved every second of this video.
Thank you for having Jay on! He is one of my absolute favorites and such a cool dude! 🤘
I saw Tesseract three times in Boston since first hearing them in 2012. Just saw them October. Brought my 18 year old daughter and it was fantastic
One of the best modern metal drummers. Jay is really damn amazing!
Jay is such a positive dude.
DRUM HONEYYYYYS!
i had to put it out there, but beside that, Jay is an absolute beast and such a nice guy, drumeo you did a great job with this video
Saw them at the beginning of this tour, amazing show and the album has been in constant rotation for me.
Gotta LOVE Jay! Can't wait to see him live with TesseracT
I was at this show. So incredible, one of the best performances I've seen. The lights, sound and vibe was amazing. Jay is a monster drummer.
YES! One of my favorite drummer of all time, hope to se more of Jay on this channel!
What a perfect drummer to have on this channel! Love mixing in the live element, as well.
Jay is the nicest guy ever that plays like a master.
Check out Dirk Verbeuren😀

Great vid. Jay's style fits Tesseract so well.

Jay is on another level! so f*cking good!
I almost missed that video. Thanks RUclips and drumeo
