  • Discovered some nice adapters to allow me to use my 20v Porter Cable batteries with other brand name power tools & radio. Please read the "Important" note below.
    I'm using the following adapters in this video:
    20v Porter Cable to 18v Porter Cable - amzn.to/3erbSrs
    20v Porter Cable to 18v Dewalt - ebay.us/a2EpCx
    20v Porter Cable to 18v Makita - ebay.us/9QWfjS
    A few other adapters not shown in video:
    Milwaukee Battery Adapter to Ryobi 18V One+ (Made in EU) - amzn.to/3Hd9roM
    Makita 18V Battery to Dewalt 20V Tool - amzn.to/3Ez0tk7
    Makita 18v Battery to Ryobi 18v One+ tool - amzn.to/3evJXH4
    Milwaukee 18V or Dewalt 20V Lithium-ion Battery to Makita 18V Lithium-ion Tool - amzn.to/3z1cEoJ
    Dewalt 18V/20V Max Battery to Milwaukee M18 18V Tool - amzn.to/3euaIeS and amzn.to/32yqEKl
    Milwaukee 18V or Dewalt 20V Lithium-ion Battery to Makita 18V tool - amzn.to/341V8VU
    Milwaukee M18 Li-ion Battery to Dewalt 18V/20V (Max) Series Power Tools - amzn.to/3FKDa84
    Dewalt 20V or Milwaukee 18V to Ryobi 18V Tool - amzn.to/3z58SKI
    Milwaukee 18V or Dewalt 20V Lithium-ion Battery to Ryobi 18v One+ tool - amzn.to/3szfPCN
    Dewalt 20v battery to Dewalt 18v tool - amzn.to/3eJR92t
    Dewalt 20V Li-ion Battery to Porter Cable 20V Tool - amzn.to/3ptpb0W
    Side note: while the PC to Makita did work, the combination of the two was a little too bulky and wouldn't allow me to close the back of the radio. Despite that, the adapter still worked and will allow me to use it with other Makita power tools that doesn't have a height limitation like the radio does.
    *Important: The 18v PC and 18v Dewalt both originally used NiCd batteries. Tools that use NiCd/NiMh batteries are designed to run until the battery is fully drained. Lithium-Ion tools however have circuitry in them to prevent the batteries from fully draining. Once the tool detects the power level is too low, it auto shuts off to prevent battery damage. this is why Lithium Ion tools suddenly stop instead of slowly losing power until it dies, like NiCd and NiMh tools do. So to prevent the battery from fully draining when being used with NiCd/NiMh tools, you need to be aware of the power levels left in your batteries and replace them before it fully drains to prevent possible battery damage. While that would be a pain, it's the price you have to pay to use current batteries with older tools. While it's especially important to be aware of battery drain with the NiCd/NiMh tools and Li-Ion batteries, you also want to be aware of battery drain with Li-Ion tools and other branded Li-Ion batteries since the battery drain detection circuitry seems to differ in its location from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, some put the circuitry in the tool itself while other may put it in the battery. So just play it safe and never fully drain the battery when using adapters.

    Subscriber #500 here!... Thanks for the video... I'm trying to hop onto the end of the year tool deals w/o forfeiting my Porter-Cable collection. This is the1st video I chose to watch and I think you explained that all right here. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

      Thanks for subscribing! And Happy New Year! Yea when I buy new tools from other manufacturers, I check to see if I can use my PC batteries first :) I've expanded to Makita batteries as well since I made this video, it seems what adapters I'm missing for PC, I can find for Makita. So, so far I'm set with just these two battery brands. Although, I have recently started 3d printing, so I may just start making my own adapters if I can't find what I need. 🙂

      if you have access to a 3d printer, you can actually print these out your self and with a little wiring, you have your adapters :)

    I use my DeWalt 20-volt Max lithium ion batteries with all of my power tools. I have some of the older DeWalt 18 voltwith an adapter and Craftsman 19.2 volt tools with an adapter all those tools still work and are usable but now I only use one battery system for all of my tools

    I received harbor freight earthquake impact tools as a gift. the 1/2 and 3/8 impact drivers and 3 good batteries. I have searched and can't find ANY adapters that will let me use these Earthquake XT batteries in any other tools. I'd love to find an adapter but can't seem to find any.

    Dose anyone know if Black&Decker or Porter Cable Batteries fit & work directly onto Dewalt power tools. Back in the day B&D batteries use to fit Dewalt tools. As B&D is the Parent Company to both Dewalt & Porter Cable there batteries might or should fit still fit all the other tools. Run times may not be as long, but the cost also match’s the differences.

      Yup, I mentioned that in the video. It was more than just a proof of concept that the adapter does actually work with Makita tools. At the time of recording, that was the only Makita tool I could test with.

    I've heard these adapters drain the batteries to the point they're rendered useless, have you had any problems with this adapter? Does it affect performance at all?

    • @R-TechEnthusiast
      @R-TechEnthusiast  3 года назад +1

      yup, if you're not careful and you fully drain the battery, there's a chance you'll damage it. I haven't had any issues with them yet, but I make sure to stop and recharge the batteries frequently. I don't let my batteries drain till it's completely dead.

    • @Drew1734
      @Drew1734 3 года назад

      @@R-TechEnthusiast is there a mechanism by which them draining the battery would damage it? Not sure I understand why it would matter to drain a battery using the adapter any more so than it would just using the original battery on the tool until it died.

    • @R-TechEnthusiast
      @R-TechEnthusiast  3 года назад +1

      @@Drew1734 because the tool, with the oem battery, will actually shut off before a lithium ion battery is fully drained. For example, the NiCad batteries, when it's starts to run low, you'll notice the drill start to slow down until it no longer runs. At least with my lithium tools, when the battery runs low, the tool will just shut off instead of slowing down first. That is the over drain protection kicking in.

    With Porter Cable is no longer adding to their 20Volt Max line, what we really need is a Porter Cable 20Volt Battery to Dewalt 20Volt Tool. Has any one seen such a animal any where?

      You can find battery adapters on both Amazon and on Ebay. I had a hard time finding the 20v PC to other tool adapters on Amazon but I did find those in the video on Ebay.
      If you have a 3d printer and a little know-how, you can actually 3d print them as well then just do the wiring yourself.
      If you're looking for the exact ones I have there, I can grab the links and post them for you.
