This truck and engine combination only runs the fuel pump when the engine is turning so cycling the key does nothing for priming the fuel. You are better off adding a small amount of clean diesel to the fuel bowl while the new filter is installed to help prime the system.
I’m late to the party, but thanks for the video - I just watched it. I do have a question, what kind of oil/lubricant do you use to lubricate the o-rings?

I appreciate it very much you taking your time and video taping this whole fuel filter change for us that like to work on our own vehicles. I am new to the diesel world but I like to learn and do it myself.
You just save me a lot of money. Just called the dealership and the cost for them to put on new fuel filters is $410 without tax. Thanks a lot for sharing your video.
Thanks a lot for the video , first time changing the filters , everything went just as you described , my front filter took a 1 1/8 " though. Thanks again !
Service manual says not to fill it that it will cause damage. It says to cycle the key 4 times. May have to bump the starter each time to let the pump run for 25 seconds each time.
When you get to the "hold to confirm screen, you hit the scroll down button and 'OK' will appear. THEN, you hold the right arrow to confirm! Nice video btw.
Hey Jim, thanks for the video. I have the same model. However I could not open the front fuel filter cap until I had opened the yellow bleed vale. Do you know if this is common. No amount of effort would release the plastic nut until the yellow valve was untightened. This is slightly different than what's shown in the video. Thanks Lee
To reach my front fuel filter I use a 3/8 ratchet, two 8" extensions and a swivel. Works great and a lot easier on the back! Good vid thanks for the time and talent!!
Great video. My truck has major idle roll/surging. I saw some people were saying it could be the fuel filters. Have you seen the fuel filters cause an idle surging? Thank You
I like the idea of running the engine between filter changes. Make a lot of sense. One question; why would the service information (CD) I have says to remove both negative battery cables before doing the fuel filter replacements?
Great video. I will be doing this on my 2013 Ram 2500 in about a month or so. I have watched this video about 5 times already to make sure I have it down.
doglas behl I found this site, if it helps: www.amazon.com/Lisle-14600-Fuel-Filter-Socket/dp/B000HI6KTA/ref=pd_bxgy_263_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0E7DWT2B28KRS650JXT1
Now doing one at a time makes GREAT sense. One thing I plan to do is get a glass jar and drain rear & front filters separate and let sit see if I see any water. Beings I get my diesel from only 2 sources. But man thanks for the advice. I will keep coming back for more helpful info.
I carry a one gallon clean glass pickle jar with a lid. Any station I go to I shoot about a quart or less into the jar first. Check it and then use a funnel to put it in my tank if clean. Pump about 5 gallons in or 10, check it again.
Thanks for the video, but FFS don't ever just turn the engine over after a fuel filter change like that. Cycle on/off 4-5 times.
+GTOAviator OK Thank you for your input
That made me cringe

Thank you!! I just paid over 400 bucks at the dealership for this to be done. I will be doing it myself for now on!
Loosen up a lil bit ??? you turned it like 15 fucking times ? also you said there is lil room for the socket ? I could use a 6 foot extension on it ?
Lol

They are called stealerships for a reason
What do you use to lubricate the new o-rings?
Mike Sevoian Good question Mike,I use some clean diesel fuel at my shop.
Thanks a lot for the video , first time changing the filters , everything went just as you described , my front filter took a 1 1/8 " though.
Thanks again !
+Tim Stephens Great job.I hope my video was helpful
Would partially filling the filter canisters with clean fuel make sense to help the truck self prime?

Jim does the 2011 3500 have a prefilter or just the one on the engine? and does the key of and on prime the 2011s. Good clear video thanks
Are the part numbers for front and back the same? Was going to buy in bulk since it seems I'm changing it every 8K-10K miles. YIKES!
Actually they are different numbers.

+mark shimala If you need any advice let me know also let me know how you do.
Do you have to do front filter first?
Did you just lubricant the o-rings with the Diesel that came out of the filter your removed
Thanks for watching. If you can use clean Diesel that would be better if not then yes you can use the oil from the old filter.
Dose this go for a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel turbo dully
I believe 2010-current ones all have two filters so it should go as well for dually s
Ram 250?? lol 250 is for blue oval vehicles. You mean Ram 2500 sir. I know that you know that... :-)
Dj Popo Oh Sh_t sorry. Thanks for pointing that out :)

+Jim Cash. Thank you Jim.Changing the filters one at a time will save you a possible problem .
Yep...the air in the line issue. Would you say front first or rear. ?
+Jim Cash. Most of the time i do the rear one first .As for the air in the lines. That happened once to me it was a real pain in the rear end .

It's not Dodge Ram anymore, it's just Ram Trucks. They separated in 2009. You should catch up!
Thanks for the video.
+Brian Parks Happy to help.
