Changed oil in heavy equipment for twenty years. When they would get stuck I would just hammer a pry bar through the filter and turn it. After I changed my bosses pick up truck oil, as he started to drive home, sometimes I would say, “Dang, I don’t remember tightening up the oil filter tight”
That's an amazing tool for the filter, I just use a 1 gallon ziploc bag after you loosen the filter so when you turn it sideways it spills into the bag
Thank you for showing Oil filter cap off tool. I was recently changing the oil on my 2018 and dropped the filter making a huge mess very mad at ram for this my 2010 is so much easier
Try Geno’s garage. They make a oil filter socket that get the 6.7 Cummins filter off easily. And they sell the plug too. Also, if you have an aftermarket air intake, you could just grab the oil filter from above.
Good video. I do almost the exact same things on my 6.7. If I can't get rhe fikter loose with my bandclamp filter wrench, I just use a short cheater pipe on the handle
Dude, I’m sitting here looking at my owners manual for a 21’ and it’s not 8,000 miles. You must have the hemi info pulled up. It’s 15,000 miles. But 8,000 miles is a safe interval

FYI > I purchased a oil filter wrench and oil filter cap through Amazon; no mess! Both made specifically for the 6.7L Cummings diesel engine. If I could upload a photo of the oil wrench, I would - it fits perfectly under the oil filter, so to either loosen/tighten it.
I've owned two brand new Cummins trucks. On both of them, the original oil filter was installed by the boneheads on the Cummins line with dry gaskets and at least 50 ft-lbs of torque. Fortunately, that was back when you could still get at the filter with the cup style wrench. But it still took a 24" cheater bar, and the gasket squeaked loudly for at least the first full turn. Why can't those idiots follow the instruction printed right on the side of the f%$kin filter??? I've been changing oil for 40 years....they NEVER leak when done correctly!
STOP!!! Go to Harbor Frieght. Get the oil filter vice grip wrench. It fits almost every filter including big Caterpiller hydraulic filters and it is much smaller to fit in tight areas. Makes this job a snap.
How did you drop that filter without oil dripping from the space the filter screws onto? Every time I drop the filter down vertical so nothing spills out the filter before putting on the filter plug, I get oil dripping from the area the filter screws on. I use a zip lock to catch that oil and it is a mess half the time!
I change mine cold after pickup has sat awhile. Filter isn't quite as full that way. Can usually drop it down and put my genos garage cap on the filter to tip it out without spilling.
I just took my brand new 2022 ram 3500 cummins into dodge dealership to get a oil change ......literally right after I took it off the lot I get this tik ......when it is parked and I rev it to 2000rpm you can hear this Nasty tik.....
Pretty sure it was a person on crack who decided to make this dang filter so ridiculously hard to get out! Or did they just start with the oil filter and build the engine around that?! *Appreciate the video-definitely some good tips to increase success in this process!
I am confused. At 6:39 the chart at the top shows oil change every 7500 miles or 6 months. However the first written line says change every 15,000 miles?
Yes it is confusing, but as long as you use full synthetic diesel oil like Rotella and go by the cluster oil reminder all will be good. I personally would not go over 10000 miles. These engines are not cheap and sludge is hard to get rid off
@@fjb666LOL tell us you don't own a diesel without telling us you don't own a diesel. 15K pil changes on all of the Ram trucks on our farm with zero issues. Now the older ones we did 7500 mile oil changes but the new trucks running Shell T6 5w40 FS is an absolute waste changing it at 7500miles.
You don’t need to get your engine hot tot drain …if you wait 30 min 0r longer it all goes into your oil pan ! And there is no point to take your dipstick out
oil is better these days and made for extended change intervals. I know its cheap insurance on a $80K truck but try doing a used oil analysis next time and i bet it will show you that the oil you are dumping out is still good.
@@jpr8451 3000 miles on an oil change is just throwing away money. You can do a easy and cheap used oil analysis and see how good your oil still is. I have done several UOA over the years in a few different trucks and i am always amazed how good the oil is after 10K miles.
People should be educated that Cummins engine is not an ordinary engine and oil change should cost accordingly. In our dealer techs are getting .5 for diesel oil change and most have 2 bays so they can let it drain while doing something else.
In 2022 Ram 5500 you can't reach to the oil filter, you have to remove part of inner fender liner, because the space is too narrow. Some people removing air filter housing to reach the filter from the engine bay .
I just have to rant for a second about how much I dislike the current placement of the oil filter on the passenger side of Cummins company trucks. It's just too close to the tire and it makes changing the filter a nightmare. It's seriously one of the worst design decisions I've ever seen. Ugh, just frustrates me to no end.
I have my wife or a helper on a step stool help me guide the new oil filter back in place from above. It’s a royal PIA trying to do it through the wheel well without a lift.
Best oil change video on RUclips for ram his accent soothes me😂 and gives you confidence 😂

I used a large pair of Chanel locks to loosen the filter and it worked great and I hand tighten the new one back

I take the hose out between the turbo and the filter box so easy to get to the filter!!!

I used the ice pick method on my first oil change. It was a nightmare to access the filter. I’d love to see how without removing a wheel.
Try removing part of the air filter tube and then you can pull the oil filter out from the top
Always use a band wrench to tighten a diesel filter! Not super tight tight enough.
Can you please share the link or information on the tool used to plug the filter.
