- Truck care, especially with a diesel, can be very costly. Why not do ram cummins oil change yourself.
In this video, I show how I quickly drain the oil, remove the oil filter, replace it with a new filter, measure the oil remove, replace the oil and reset the Oil Life on the dash.
I use several lights and cameras to show all the steps, especially removing the filter without spilling a drop using this special tool. (see links below)
Always consult your manual. We have a 2018 Ram 3500 long bed crewcab dually.

Dang, this oil filter looks like more of a pain than the old ring of fire Subaru oil filters. Great work on this video; the multiple angles definitely made for a high quality guide!
Thank you. It’s a pain to set up all the angles but it shows the process better
Another job well done Doc! Pluggy thing…who knew? You knew!👍🏼😎
Pluggy thing was pretty funny.
Thanks for watching when others aren’t 😉
Another great video, thanks for going through the trouble to record this.
Thanks for watching. Sorry we haven’t been producing like we used to 🤗
I always check for leaks during the first start up after an oil change, I've had filters blow off and filters leak from the sides or the crimp, fleets don't always use the best filters. Quality filters are always best to use. When I finally was able to move up the line I got the companies away from low quality filters and expanded the sampling numbers. I'm a retired shop forewoman of a fleet of 1100 pieces of rolling stock.
It’s a great idea to always check the filter for leaks after starting up I should’ve mentioned that in my video. Larry
Makes me appreciate the 6.7L Powerstroke filter hanging down with tons of space around and below. Also the Fumoto drain plug makes it very easy to drain the oil without making a mess. Great video though and the screw-in filter plug is genius. At least you don't have a cartridge filter like on a lot of old diesels where you have to replace the element inside of the metal can...
I need to watch how the filter is changed in the ford and gm trucks, im invested in ram but i would like to know what my ford and gm brothers have to deal with. Larry
I use Fleet-guard filters. I change my oil and fuel filters every 10 thousand miles. I’ve work in the shop for 40 years and we have found that if you wait to the recommended 15 thousand miles on oil and fuel filter changes. That when the engine gets over 100 thousand. They would get a low fuel quality check engine light. Which would end up replacing all 6 injectors. By switch to a 10 thousand oil and fuel filter change. We’ve found that in doing this it did cut down on injector failure.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I will definitely be doing my changes before 10k and using high quality synthetic oil. I want to keep this truck running for the next 500k miles without too many problems. Larry
Great information. Very good detail as always. Hope you guys are doing well and enjoying your travels. Look forward to catching up at some point. It's been a minute.
We have been crazy busy - moving a lot. Lots of repairs 😁
We do need to catch up. Hope life on the homestead is going well 🤗
I found removing the air intake hose and pulling the oil filter out from the top works better for me.
Because of my height and short arms, I prefer this method - hate climbing basically into the truck under the hood if I can avoid it.
But that’s a great tip others can use
Another great video! Thank you. I have a 2017 Cummins and i will be following your videos. I haven't checked but i am hoping you have one for the fuel filters.
I recently replaced my fuel filters and filmed the entire thing with multiple cameras, but I have not had the time to edit that video because we still busy with finding a new RV hopefully I’ll get that done soon Larry
Can't wait to see it! Keep them coming. I also, have you heard about the grid heater bolt problem on 2013 to 2018?
I’m a bit confused at the part where you said you cycled the ignition to run for 20 seconds then off (3x).
Do you mean you turned the engine over as in engaged the starter but somehow didn’t start the engine?
The reason I ask and I could be mistaken is I thought these Cummins 6.7 had mechanical oil pumps that built pressure when the engine is turned over and or running and not electronic oil pumps that build pressure at the turn of the key like a fuel pump.
Thanks for the video.
✌🏽
Met you on the beach in Buxton. We had the dog that looked like yours.
We are growing Scruffys hair out so they can look like twins 😁
I always turn the front tires to the left so you don’t have to reach as far to access the oil filter
Great tip. Thanks
It is much cheaper for us to use the Dodge dealers "Mopar Multi-oil change 4 changes in 2 years" program. Last time it cost us $306 tax included. That comes out at less than $77 per oil change.
I have been using this program for years because it is much cheaper than me doing it myself. No appointment at the dealership. I just drive in to the express lane.
We are fulltime so we get a change at least twice a year and usually we are on our third just a the end of the first year of the program. I have plenty of experience changing oil and every other fluid in the over a dozen vehicles we have owned in the past but with age catching up...
Do you know what oil they are using? Ever watch? For that price, I can see them using synthetic
Being at dealership I don't generally get to see the bay. The last dealership got pretty fussy when I tried to walk back there. He kept saying something about Rules and Insurance? Like the customer would do something to get hurt and sue them. 🤣
The information on the program says it is synthetic but could be a mix. Of course they buy in extreme bulk so I would imagine they get a serious break over what I can buy.
My body is just not up for that kind of work anymore so as an alternative this works for us.

Don't prefill the filter.
Thanks, i wont the next time, but do you think it hurts, Larry
@@DownsizingMakesCents Not really. But the quart you poor doesn't get filtered. At the same time, its clean fresh oil. It just pointless to fill it because all you do is risk a mess when trying to put it back on.
