I had considered going for a super ultra wide monitor for my new PC setup, but went for a regular ultra-wide instead to save on costs. For ~€550 (found it as well for $550 in the US on amazon) got a 34" 144Hz 1ms 3440x1440 (21:9) curved monitor and I'm honestly extremely happy with it. You still need a beefy GPU for a monitor like this, and the productivity benefits are a bit less; but still, the 21:9 is so nice for regular use as well as for gaming and I don't think I'll ever go back to 16:9. So, if you are considering this but don't want to spend a fortune, consider scaling it down a notch, as you still get a lot of the benefits from an ultra-wide at less than half the price.
I got a Dark Matter 49" for $850 on Amazon. (looks like they're not on sale that low right now), and it's such a huge step up coming from 2x 1080 monitor setup.

It's just wonderful how Microsoft couldn't be bothered to implement taskbar functionality in Windows 11, so that vertical space benefit you were talking about is literally not possible, the taskbar is stuck on the bottom.

The price of these 49 "5k monitors is a complete absurd ... Just take a look at the very low pixel density ... 109 PPI vs 140 PPI on 32" 4k display. Many people talks about productivity, but for the price of the one of these 49 "monitors, it's possible to buy 2 very good 32" 4k displays like eg: LG UltraFine 32UN880 or even 3 or more mid-range price 27"/32 "4k displays and they will be as much or even more productive as one ultra-wide. I don't know about you, but for me PPI matters... Additionally if one of the two or three monitors will fail, my productivity will not be disturbed while waiting for the broken one to get back from repair... not everyone is keeping old backup monitor in the basement.
I'm glad you mentioned that cause I feel that gets glossed over. In terms of productivity I definitely agree to discuss the price of this versus the ppi. Dual monitors has served me tried and true.
They get more and more affordable. I don’t need a fancy one, just for basic office work. Right now I have 3 in a big bulky, and unstable stand. The one screen will be beneficial for vision which is a huge benefit for productivity. If you can see without struggling work is so much easier and it’s so unpleasant and you don’t even realize you’re struggling until your prescription is useless. Huge part of the cause of dreading work
When I brought my car up to the front of BestBuy to load my CRG9 into my car, the store manager came out and told me how much he loved this monitor. I was pretty stoked to have him come out of his way to tell me how much he loved a monitor. Once I got home and got it hooked up I was blown away at how functional by being able to change the amount of screen one input gets if you need to do a dual screen setup. I liked it so much that I went and got a 2nd one, one for work and one for personal!
I honestly cant believe your gaming on this full monitor! I went 34" ultra wide and I honestly wouldn't go any larger as I find my head rotating a lot back and fourth already!
Is it possible to play games at a 1920x1080 window (basically not have it take up the entire monitor) and have the rest of the screen for youtube / discord? That's my main reason for wanting to get one.
So I bought the BenQ EX3501R 35" curved monitor about 2½ years ago at about 900 bucks.... and I simply love it. Its a 21:9, 100 Hz, 3440x1440 monitor and the colors, viewing angle and contrast are simply phenominal. I use the monitor as both a gamer and as a coder. Just opening Visual Studio on this monitor is a bloody joy ever time ;-)
Thanks for the input. Order a Neo G9 to use with a new system equipped with a 4090 GPU and Intel 13th Gen i9 CPU. I also ordered two Neo G7s to check out 4K. Not sure I will need 4K, and hoping the Neo G9 works as advertised.
Even if this gargantuan was too big for your desk, it might make a great example to use in a control room or a NASA space center, regardless of not gaming with it.
i just bought a NEW g9 49in oled on flash sale for $1079 from Best Buy.. Yes after a week from owning, there are things i would change, like a 1000R curve opposed to 1800R. But Man this thing is amazing with playing games! Particularlly Starfield and Forza Horizon 5 and RDR2... OH!! and the friggin QD-OLED is AMAZING!! Dont listen to the Giganerds, this monitor is awesome!!!
Any idea on how monitor goes sharing the screen on zoom and teams? If it doesnt show the area you defined and give poor display to workmates it wouldn't work for me.
I was thinking of replacing my triple monitor setup with an ultrawide. I saw a YT video on one of these where a commenter said that these monitors are problematic with Zoom and screen sharing - causing issues for viewers on the other end of the call. I have two 1600x1200 monitors on the side and a 1920x1200 in the middle - so a 1080 would be a downgrade for me. If I ever upgrade my PC again I'll be looking at 1440, maybe they'll have Zoom and Teams fixed by then.
I bought the 49” Dark Matter from monoprice for $750. 120hz and 5120x1440 with a Samsung panel. I think the discontinued that version and switched to a different panel. Its been great no issues, I did find the stand to be to big like your review so I went with a monitor arm. I agree I could never go back to two screens!!

Not enough vertical space for me, I'm afraid. I use a 55" 3840x2160 and a 28" 1920x1080 so that they have the same dpi. The 55" 4K can fit 100 lines of code in VSC in each of half-a-dozen panes if I need, or eight pages of A4 portrait at 100% zoom. Gaming and playing videos at 4K, or simply having four full HD windows in place means it's a whole new experience over my old HD monitors. I fully understand the attraction of the ultra-wide for increasing your horizontal space; perhaps you can appreciate the value of increasing your vertical real estate by the same factor?
@@llothar68 Unfortunately, I'm now 70 years old and my eyes are not what they were at your age. I find that with a 40" screen, I need the zoom set so that I can't get as many lines of code as I want on the screen. It's also useful because my other monitor is a 28" 1920x1080, so the pixel pitch is the same, and I can throw windows from one screen to the other with the text remaining the same size. For what it's worth, I have a friend who has one-sixth vision (registered blind) and he uses a 65" 3840x2160 OLED. He needs every inch of the screen when he's programming.
I don't see the use in paying for an ultra widescreen like that, especially for how much they cost. Sure the bezel can look a bit off, but there aren't may things that will stretch over 2 screens. and from what I saw with the splits on the widescreen, there doesn't seem to be much point in just getting rid of a few bars for over a thousand dollars (or pounds, since I'm British) when I can just as easily get by with things on separate screens (which could actually be helpful in some ways).
Have thought about one of these. For me, I use three monitors, and use them independently of each other while running sdr radio software. These large screens sure are clean
I used to love Fancy Zones, and in a way I still do, but with Windows 11 build-in support for multiple windows is so good that I almost forget about FZ
This size monitor + higher resolution + passive 3d would be interesting for gaming. Cherry on the top would be trackIR style head tracking to correct the camera perspective.
I had one of these for a few days. For a working environment, its fantastic. If youre looking for a gaming monitor? I found it was a lot more trouble than it was worth. It was a finnicky process to setup on a game by game basis, not to mention the performance issues it entails along with having such a wide screen available it was downright headache inducing at times. This was the biggest turnoff for me. Dont get me wrong, the monitor was cool, but just not for me for the reasons above. I ended up sending it back and getting a 32" Samsung G7 and its been the best monitor ive ever owned. Paired with 2 AOC 144hz 24" monitors either side.
Ergotron HX monitor arm. It’s not cheap, but considering how expensive the monitor is, I wanted to make sure it is safe. And it has worked perfectly :) no regrets
@@romeopahati Thank you :-) Can you move it in all directions with one hand? Does it have to be mounted on the back of the desk, or could be mounted on the right side?
Only downside is presentations. Powerpoint needs a way to "present to window" so you can see Presenter view and the presentation side by side (and share the latter)
Most people don't know or try, but you can still play ultra-wide on a 16:9 by adjusting the resolution... 21 by 10 is the sweet spot for me when it comes to games, any more than that I would prefer to take on a VR head-set if I could even afford one.
I decided having more vertical pixels outweighs the benefits of an ultrawide so bought a 43” 4K instead. It can do PiP, can also split screen up to four inputs and has USB-C that can charge the laptop too.
@@culesamericano9929 It’s primarily my work from home monitor so I don’t use it for gaming. Also OLED at that size is pretty expensive… it’s so big you have to buy a special arm if you want to mount it to your desk, the arm costs $300 😏
Like high-refresh and Freesync before it, going 32:9 is definitely a one-way street; anything less just feels silly and clunky to try and use. Fellow owners PLEASE take note of the side-pinned Windows taskbar though, it is absurd how often I see people leave it on the bottom, limiting the already scarce vertical real estate for no reason. Game compatibility can be a bit of an issue, but honestly not nearly as much as I expected. Almost any game with a non-fixed aspect ratio can be made to work to *some* degree, often just with a couple simple INI tweaks. Games with independently scalable HUDs are especially great, as leaving the HUD elements arranged in 16:9 or 21:9 bypasses the admitted annoyance of turning your head all over the place just to check health and the like.
My 3 monitor setup : Dell U2711 27" 60Hz + LG 32GK650 32" 144Hz + Dell U2711 27" 60Hz The Dell monitors I got used for $70 each, LG was $300 new . Total price $440. And yes they fit on my 6 foot desk :)
I got one of those and still manage to fill up my screen with icons. It could stand to be a little taller. I love it though. I cant even see myself using anything else. I'm already looking to get the new model with higher frequency.
Great video. I am curious as to how the ‘curved’ monitor works out. As a heavy Adobe user I have been afraid of the ‘curve’ and wondering if it makes straight lines, say for instance when working in Photoshop, look bent or distorted. Might consider one of these in the future.
It doesn't. The curve isn't that drastic. In fact, I have the Dell 49" Ultra Widescreen, and I regret not going waiting for the Samsung G9 series that has a much tighter curve. At normal viewing distances, the edges just aren't pulled in far enough for the best view.
@@lonewolf_521 the line will still show clearly, you will be able to tell if you look from the side but if you get a larger one than 27" you shouldn't have any issue sitting right in the middle
34" 21:9 ultrawide owner here. One disadvantage for gamers is that the minimap takes a split second longer to focus on. i.e. in a driving game it would be harder to check where you're going on the minimap without crashing into traffic because the map is further away.
Noticed you are using Airpods Pro. How are you connecting them to the Windows machine and still getting proper quality? Btw, with a little work, you can overlap zones in FancyZones, to get more shapes in. I do this to allow a 27" center zone, 2 full height sides, and then also allow to split the side zones into two horizontally, for getting 2 command lines into each side zone. This lets me have a full 27" IDE in the center, and 4 command lines running docker logging for 4 specific microservices I want to see
I got the CRG9 and I couldn't go back to anything else either. I upgraded from a 32 inch monitor. Gaming on it is an experience that everyone should experience.
Same here. I started with the G7, then brought the CRG90G over the G9 (too curved). Best overall monitor ever for me - fantastic for mega excel workbooks, great for gaming. I run a 3080 so can handle the resolution at High for most games
This is the monitor that I wanted! My gamer husband convinced me that 49" was too big and a 34" ultrawide was more than enough. I work from home and use my ultrawide for AWS, and I really could have used the extra real estate that the 49" ultrawide would have provided for all the programs I use in AWS.
Not only did I fall in love with mine…..I want to get another one so I would have two. One on top of another. After using 8 monitors at work for Sprint at one time.
I love the idea of an ultrawide but the height problem bothers me. Maybe I'd change my mind if I got one in front of me on my desk, but that's been the only thing holding me back. Also your point #1 is kind of rendered moot as I have a 43" 4k TV as a monitor and Windows 11 does a great job of dividing the workspace if wanted. I always run 2 full windows at the same time.
You should have got the Samsung G9 49” Qled. It has QHD resolution. It’s not 4K, but close enough. (5120 X 1440) plus it has 240 hz. Games look absolutely amazing on Samsung G9. Even if you run it only at 120hz, it still looks stunning. The 1000R curvature is the best part. Only monitor I have ever heard of with this much curvature.
Work in support for video switchers and video production gear so I have to do some office stuff and a lot of production stuff. since working from home (COVID), I got the Samsung Oddessy G9 back in mid-late 2021 it is the best thing I have bought for any part of my job. Music Production Streaming and Gaming. I find myself making ways to have all my machines work with one monitor more efficient than having 5-7 monitors on my desk at any given time.
I just started a new job working from home full time as a software engineer and I'm very seriously considering replacing my vertical 27" 1440p monitor and horizontal 27" 1440p monitor with a single 5120 x 2160 monitor like the Dell UltraSharp U4021QW - it has enough height to not miss the vertical monitor, enough width to cover those two monitors and a laptop and then some extra, and is a reasonable PPI so you can use it at 100% scaling - the only problems are the price and the total lack of gaming features. I'd love to see your thoughts on 5k2k monitors like this.
@@darryljack6612 Ideally not more than £800-1000, but there's no monitors on the market atm that I've found with the right resolution and PPI within that budget.
@@jcreek23 The Super ultrawide monitor i personally use for college, gamming, and editing. Is called the "Lenovo Legion Y44W-10" It's 43.4 inches, refresh rate is 144 HZ, Native Resolution is 3840 X 1200 so its native 4k in width but not in length, but its also a step above 1080p. Although it can be overclocked to full 4k at 3840 X 2160, But (at least for me, maybe because my graphics card is only a 1660ti) its only at 60HZ while in full 4K. It has Picture By Picture but it splits into 2 separate 25 inch monitors, it also has really good support for usb type C with two plugins for it in the back. And it comes with a nice Attachable harmon kardon speaker at the base, and lastly it has a 4ms response time. I got mine in May for around 800 USD before tax and shipping, the full thing cost me around 870 USD. Its really great, takes some getting use to but, once you figure out how to properly navigate the settings its a really great monitor. I dont know if lenovo is still selling them on their website at the moment, so if it interest you. You might want to try amazon or ebay. I know its different from what you listed but its not bad.
@@jcreek23 If you're main monitors just now are 1440p you're going to lose vertical "space" - something that might be important when you're programming (more scrolling!). Maybe it can be overclocked to 1440p though? It's also not that common a resolution ... so not sure what support is like for gaming in 3840 x 1200, and I think is around 91 pixels per inch, so just a little higher than a normal 1080p (at 81 PPI). I had a look at the monitor and in the UK it's around £900 ... so for me it's just too expensive. i.e. I can get 2 x 27inch 1440p monitors at about half that amount, and while I'd love ultra-wide, I'm not sure that extra is worth it (personally). Now .. if there's something similar in size at 1440p for the same price, then I'd be "in" :)
Ahh another man of distinguished taste, using the triple zone setup... I have the predecessor of the Odyssey the LC49RG but it's 1440p. Fancyzones was amazing when I found it and makes a 32:9 montior a productivity monster. But as a gamer myself I took it a step further using StartAllBack to split my taskbar in two giving me full vertical resolution in the middle. I then wrote my own software to maximize windowed games into this area and remove the window borders (hit me up if you'd like to try it). So now I can chill playing games in full 16:9 2560x1440 whilst having comms and web browser etc. open on either side. I do sometimes game in 32:9 and it's very immersive but performance takes a hit and the peripheral areas are not really in your field of view anyway.
FABULOUS review and I'm just about to buy the one below tomorrow and I'm only hoping and praying that this is one of the good ones and not one that has many bad points but anyway this is the best I can see in New Zealand so I'm going for it it's 1700 NZD but hey we shall see. I’m kind of torn between the benefit of being able to display all my development tools at once on one hand, and on the other hand visually overloading and tiring my brain from having all this stuff in front of me. I don’t know if I’m better off minimizing and maximizing my applications. I have never tried an ultra wide. Hmm…
Is it 1440p? I feel like my main problem is after getting used to the retina screen on my MacBook Pro, all these monitors don’t have a high enough pixel density and look so pixelated. I feel like it needs to be at least 2160p for that size.

Or add a 27" next to it and you have even more real estate than super ultrawide, with many benefits
Mark: "My desk is 6 feet long..."
Mark's female viewers: "Oh hi, Mark 👁👄👁"
Size does matter :)
As a game developer, this is the BEST 49" review for those who know they need it! Thank you
*_If you play MOBA games, you get the advantage of seeing your enemies approach earlier with this ultrawide._*
*_Many isometric RPG's also get this benefit from an ultrawide._*
This has opened my eyes. Am thinking about buying a gaming pc to run Microsoft sim and I think a screen like this would make it an awesome experience
Its fantastic for sim games!
Could not agree more. PPI is king and these 49" monitors really need to be at 8k for me to consider them
They get more and more affordable. Huge part of the cause of dreading work
Had mine for 3 years, Its a game changer!
I cannot make PBP work, seems the KVM is not real, it shows to screens, but I cannot use mouse/Keyboard on both at all?
I was not aware of fancy zone. I am thinking about buying this monitor. Thanks for the info
Odyssey G9 user here. the productivity definitely changed once you start using 49"
Is it possible to play games at a 1920x1080 window (basically not have it take up the entire monitor) and have the rest of the screen for youtube / discord?
Thanks. Gonna try Fancy zone over LG's Onscreen Control.
i just bought a NEW g9 49in oled on flash sale for $1079 from Best Buy..
And, on the topic of D&D campaigns: it doubles as a very high-tech DM screen, too. 🤓😂
Ooh hoo
@@erichollar5503 thanks Eric!
Taskbar on the right makes sense on 16:9 monitors, been using that for last 13 years.
I bought a 60 inch TV plugged it with my PC and have never looked back. That was 20 years ago. I might add the Ultra Wide though, that's dope
I run the G9 model, can't say enough great things about it.
I agree, now just waiting for the 55" version of the same monitor.
Where’d u get desk and lamp and lighfs
Had one for 2 years now, 49" . Best monitor ever for gaming. As long as GPU can render that size. Any 2070 GTX and up can easy.
Very cool in GAMING mode. I just purchased a 28" 4K monitor. Editing in Premiere and other apps are so much better now!!!
What is best monitor under 1300-1400 USD around 32 inches screen size?
Usage: , Ai modelling and machine learning models, mostly Entertainment and casual gaming in free time( I game rarely due to work) ....
I am kind of looking for desktop monitor too where I can code and visulize models for artificial intelligence and data science and
As I spend most time on desktop, I usually watch my Netflix and stuff here only
I am not much into competetivie gaming as I game once a week when time permits so having clear and crips documents and better content creation and consumption is the choice
I want my documents and reseatch papers and reading experience also to be great
I have it and love doing CAD work. I wanna get better in screen management. I believe that I am not using my screen to the best of its ability.
55". in 4k is a waste. I have 40" and think this is the max.
I also use the ultrawide for radio software. currently using HRD, WSJT, and Gridsquare and the same time. Its very nice. 73 de W5RSC
I went with the Ultra Wide Alianware 38" about a year ago and i just love it, i will never go back
The resolution on these ultrawides are terrible when you are coming off a "retina" Mac screen (27" 5k)
I used to love Fancy Zones, and in a way I still do, but with Windows 11 build-in support for multiple windows is so good that I almost forget about FZ
In games like FFXIV/WoW you get about 100% more awareness of what's going on in boss battles as well. That's why I love ultrawide screens.
Try and buy one in Australia mate. They’re about 3 1/2 thousand dollars.
This size monitor + higher resolution + passive 3d would be interesting for gaming. Cherry on the top would be trackIR style head tracking to correct the camera perspective.
My ultrawide arrives in a few days. Your tip about fancyzones was very useful. Have an upvote/like!
I have the LG 49 inch ultrawide coming early next week and the monitor arm for it already arrived. I can't wait!
Which monitor arm are you using? :-) And does it work fine with the LG 49?
It can do PiP, can also split screen up to four inputs and has USB-C that can charge the laptop too.
which model?
i want to know too which model
LG 43UN700-B Monitor UHD 43"
@@symbiat0 that would be my perfect monitor but its only 60hz - also would prefer oled but alas we wait
@@culesamericano9929 It’s primarily my work from home monitor so I don’t use it for gaming. Also OLED at that size is pretty expensive… it’s so big you have to buy a special arm if you want to mount it to your desk, the arm costs $300 😏
Wow, I didn’t know there such a wide monitor available. Thx for sharing.
My 3 monitor setup : Dell U2711 27" 60Hz + LG 32GK650 32" 144Hz + Dell U2711 27" 60Hz
The Dell monitors I got used for $70 each, LG was $300 new . Total price $440. And yes they fit on my 6 foot desk :)
Are the 27 inches horizontal?
It’s nice, but I use three 32” monitors. Not sure I would get used to a smaller screen now…
I get my UltraWide HDR Samsung Oddessy G9 48.9 inch, very soon. I am excited to test it out in person
That 3 way split at 1:42 is absolutely the way to go 🔥
Thank you. Please can you connect to separate laptops to the monitor?
Your channel is the only channel that I watch for tech reviews
@@bloodgain thanks, bloodgain. appreciate the info. Yeah that Samsung G9 looks awesome. 👍
@@lonewolf_521 the line will still show clearly, you will be able to tell if you look from the side but if you get a larger one than 27" you shouldn't have any issue sitting right in the middle
34" 21:9 ultrawide owner here. One disadvantage for gamers is that the minimap takes a split second longer to focus on. i.e. in a driving game it would be harder to check where you're going on the minimap without crashing into traffic because the map is further away.
loving my new ultrawide. solid video!
that jump to D&D earned you a like brother
40in+ 4k tvs work really great for me. cheap and tons of real-estate. get a curved one and it's even better.
This lets me have a full 27" IDE in the center, and 4 command lines running docker logging for 4 specific microservices I want to see
Oh my goodness fancy zones is a game changer THANK YOU!!!!!!
38 Inch Dell '21 model here. UW for life!
49” is too big, i have one the horizontal rez is good but vertical bad
16:9 is the best for me. No black sides and is supported by everything.
Not only did I fall in love with mine…..I want to get another one so I would have two. One on top of another. After using 8 monitors at work for Sprint at one time.
Or you can just hover your mouse on the Min/Max button on the top RHS and select the screen configuration.
LG released 45inch 21:9 ultrawide with 800R
I can't fit that on my desk but got a 3440x1440 144hz ups freesync ultra wide and love it. Can't ever go back to 16:9
Never knew about the powertoys/fancyzones, thanks mate!
How much are you looking to spend?
@@darryljack6612 Ooh I'll take a look, thank you 🙂
@@jcreek23 If you're main monitors just now are 1440p you're going to lose vertical "space" - something that might be important when you're programming (more scrolling!).
I do sometimes game in 32:9 and it's very immersive but performance takes a hit and the peripheral areas are not really in your field of view anyway.
wow thanks for sharing powettoys , thats what i need now
I have a CRG9 (5120 x 1440) and only have a 2070 Super and it has no problems running all my library of modern games at that resolution.
I have one at work and I absolutely love it
_What's the vertical height of the display screen- within the top & bottom bezels?_ 👍👍
Strange that you chose this monitor over the CRG9 which has HDR1000 and 1440p albeit at 120hz. This one seems to be a basic 49".
I've just bought a 34 inch Gigabyte curved monitor and I certainly couldn't go back. BTW what is that little USB hub (?) under the monitor ?
As a brutalist, front-de-Seine, fan I love the wallpaper! Any chance of a link ? Thanks
That was a great vid, thanks. Why couldn't you VESA mount this and gain back that desk space? That's what I did w/ my 32" LG.

FABULOUS review and I'm just about to buy the one below tomorrow and I'm only hoping and praying that this is one of the good ones and not one that has many bad points but anyway this is the best I can see in New Zealand so I'm going for it it's 1700 NZD but hey we shall see. You sold me when you brought up d&d. It’s so annoying constantly switching from my character sheet to the battle map
Snagged my 49 inch, 240hz, 2k LG monitor for $650 a few days ago. So excited for it!
Are you able to watch a full screen movie or RUclips video while browsing the internet? Like you can do on a 2 screen set up?
