This was a brilliant outing...well for you, a sobering reminder to us all that things can go very wrong. You're only one gust and a millimetre of fabric from disaster.
Hey Si! Thanks matey! Yeah I know pal. I was expecting to be bivi bagging ilwuth mine collapsed around me and then bailing into Tony's if need be, not the other way round. I'm loving these tests on the Bobcat though mate.
@@SocialCampingthe crossover poles were not attached at the corners on one end as you can clearly see in the video during clips of the tent. An unfortunate accidental error which anyone could make. 😢
This is the piont why I'm using only Canvastents for the last 25 years. Ones we had a similar problem on a bikingtour. We got an 4 Men Tent, not cheap (don't know the brand anymore). Luckyly it happens at the last evening and a nice Dude let us in his cargarage for the last overnighter. For this time I allways travel with a 2x3 meter civil war typ tent. No matter i've it's summer or winter. Only thing i need are two wooden poles from the mostly near by Woods. Shoure a bit on the heavier side, but never had any Problems. Like your Videos. You and your loved ones stay save and healthy Greetings from Germany
Hello Sascha, thank you very much for watch pal and for your comment. I love canvas I really do, perfect for the woods and forests around here. I know full well they would withstand a barrage of bad weather but it's just the thought of carrying it up a mountain and then if it rains having to carry it double the weight back down the morning after. I may have to give it a go just to see how I fair. Big thanks and glad you are liking my content pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
Despite the claims of the Scarp being a 4 seaon, and its extra cross over poles, having seen one up close in the hills and a few in the Alps i was always skeptical of the fabric and thought when the conditions got tough it would fail, it always felt to thin, flimsy. Interesting at 8min 30 though the rear shot shows the opposite end guyline totally slack, more so than just the other end failing? However this is the second one i have seen fail at pretty much the exact same point on the end guyline pull. I am not surprised that a cheaper tent, with a lower cross sectionand much thicker material survived. I am surprised to hear of your friend with the black label, having had a red label and used it everywhere from Iceland, Alaska to Patagonia, not to mention scottish winter in some horrendous conditions over the last 10 years ( when they were alot cheaper - but yea in conditions way in excess of those in this video) then i think he has been very unlucky with a possibly a "monday morning" pole, or his guy out point had failed? I have never had or seen a soulo fail and have seen them battered, firm believer in the Kerlon material, just not the insane pricing they now are. One thing for sure is Hilleberg will not quibble with him they will be more interested in how it failed and batch etc.Its also way better when there is alot more snow and you can start to bury them in a little. One thing i would say to your viewers is - ALWAYS CARRY A BIVY, at the very least even a cheap plastic orange one that can be bought for £5. When everything fails they will not and in severe temps, high winds and ice rain/snow it has a better chance of keep you alive when sometimes moving might not always be the safer option. Anyone wild camping in the UK mountains during winter, or even walking for the day should without exception carry a Bivy, accidents happen and things can change very quickly in the hills. The MRT prefer collecting people alive than body retrieval.
David, that was a pleasure to read my friend. Thank you for being so constructive. I've forwarded this message on to the lads. I'm hoping it might help with Tony's issue he is having with the Tarp Tent company. The owner as zero customer service skills and is digging his heals in. A really good read that. Sounds like you've done a fair bit of adventuring yourself? Yeah, definitely carry a bivi with you. I've been having a Hungarian bivi over my bag recently but on the last few occasions I'd chose not to take it🙄, it won't happen again. Thanks very much for watching and like I say you constructive comment. Cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight No problem apologies ive been away to reply but did subscribed to see how this goes and by chance found your mates video and replied directly there. I fundementally believe the Scarp tent is not a 4 season tent, or what we would typically classify as one. I mean to start with anything that doesnt seal down to the ground for one, doesnt have mesh inners that can be zipped up and closed etc your going to stuggle once that white stuff gets swirling. It has lots of design flaws and thats before we start talking about loading and stress points and guy anchors points. I'll be honest im not sure where the sudden craze for them came from given anyone whos had the opportunity to have a look at them in person that's benn around the block a few times can see the weak areas. Saving weight is one thing - generally doesnt work out well for you in true winter - it is what it is. Great summer tent though for sure - but then again better alternatives both cheaper and at this price point that can be pushed deep into the 3 season spectrum (more than this).
Hi again David, I can't comment as I've literally looked at it on the outside and stuck my head in it on another camp but that's it. It just generated a lot of interest I think because the "bigger" RUclipsrs bought into them. Now, I'm in the process of deciding if my Bobcat is 4 seasons, everything you mentioned above this tent as. The material is crazy thick and is lightweight. The only thing I've not managed to test is in snow but it ticks all the boxes if I did manage to get it out in a thick snow storm. I am convinced it would Survive The Night once again. Thanks mate for your input once again.
Based on your initial Bobcat purchase, I bought one for my brothers cycle camping trips, I’m even more pleased I did now! For the money you can’t go wrong!
@@AntSurviveTheNight it sort of shows that even if you spend a lot of money on a tent, sometimes, just sometimes it will let you down in an unpredictable way.
Just goes to show, you don't need to pay silly money for a solid tent. Myself and my mate sat out 80mph gusts in Snowdonia in my Vango Chinook 200. The only other tent left standing was a mountain Hardwear trango 2, all the other campers had bailed during the night (we were at gwern gof uchaf campsite under Tryfan). I'm proud to say, that I had a hand in the design of the bobcat when I worked for go outdoors in Manchester, it started as the North ridge col, which I proceeded to butcher and modify, getting the weight down to 1.5kg, from my "prototype"....the col lite was born, which then became the bobcat 1. There's still some changes I'd make, the inner needs attaching to the outer at the rear guy out point, and could actually do with 2 guy out points. I also added a "tension band system" on the pole like Vango tunnel tents, but go outdoors couldn't include it due to patents/copyright etc. Great video, I hope your mates got sorted out by scarp and hilleberg👍🏻
Hi Wolfie mate, what a great read that was pal, very interesting. Some serious wind up on Snowdonia, it sounded quality mate. As long as you have made preparations and you have chosen a safe pitch there is nothing wrong in experiencing a extreme camp is there. Wow, now that is a claim to fame mate, I'd like to say thank you then for making such an amazing awesome tent. Top job pal! Yeah some good point to add or mod onto the Bobcat there pal. Thanks very much for watching and for your comment. Cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight cheers buddy, it's just a shame I didn't get any recognition from go outdoors head office lol. I might get a bobcat and modify it properly now I have a sewing machine 👍🏻
I have had a tent like the OEX very similar design to yours, but made by a company called "Hallmark." had it for 37 years and never let me down. Last year I used it for the last time, the centre pole broke, so I had to use a long piece of vine as a jury rig. It worked well. I have now retired the old girl. It could stand up to whatever the wind threw at it. Enjoyed the video. ATB cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
Hello mate, ahh cool sounds like it's done you proud mate. I like the bushcraft aspect too in getting it patched up too! Yeah you just know you can put your full trust in kit when you have used it that long. Thanks very much for watching and commenting pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
I camped out there in winter a few years back in my Scarp 1 (older model). I’d checked the weather but foolishly not really looked at wind speeds. According to the Met Office it’d been 50ish mph winds with up to 67mph gusts. As I was pegging it out and putting the centre pole in, two of the corners ripped when a massive gust came rolling over the top of Sharp Edge. I managed to pitch it properly and put the crossover poles in but the two ripped corners were flapping like flags. A couple of times, like you, I had the tent flat to my face but in testament to the tent, it survived the night. Although I had very little sleep. I had all four corners reinforced at Alpkit in Keswick and it’s been brilliant ever since. Sadly I’m not sure this Scarp can be repaired in the same way. Hopefully there’ll be a good outcome 🙏🏼
Hi Tower, tough night for you there mate. It's great that Alpkit can do and are willing to make repairs or mods to other different brand tents. Weather can be very existing. Big thanks pal for watching it and glad you enjoyed it. Yes, good outcome for both tents, on way for repairs as of today. Cheers, Ant 👍
I have the Bobcat 1 tent. I couldn’t find it in the States. Had to order it from England and pay big postage. Haven’t tried my Bobcat in high wind. Like it so far.
Hello Daniel, yeah class mate, glad you managed to get hold of one over there. I can imagine how much it must have cost you shipping it over. You'll love it mate. 70 mph was a tad too much but it survived haha. Let me know how you get on will you.
Haha go on the bobcat, sorry Tony and Chris, hope you get your tents sorted. Pretty much fully tested now the bobcat and from what I’ve seen am sold. Really can’t wait to get mine out now 👌
Hi Steve lol yeah it's a cracker of a tent pal! Yes, both tents are now being sorted bud. I'd say so mate, I would have lived to have spent the night there as I would have felt I'd don't everything to it and hopefully it would have survived but that gust did take two well respected tents down so... Cheers mate 👍
My Scarp1 survived 70mph gusts in 2018 at Grisedale Tarn when my mates OEX tent pole failed dramatically at 3 in the morning. I still have that same Scarp 1 which recently survived huge gusts on a Scottish ridge above Glen Shiel. I’ve never owned the crossing poles though.
Hi Paul, yeah Henry said he was more than confident that the tent would survive winds like that and I'm sure it would. Unfortunately on this outing it wasn't setup correctly by the owner. That was the plan when we camped this. The plan was to hop into the Scarp if mine failed but it didn't happen that way. Thanks Paul for your comment and for watching pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
Just shows how crucial it is to follow the manufactures guidelines to pitching a scarp 1 correctly especially if your testing tent limits . All true to ensure you have a backup winter bivi just for survival . Worth the weight penalty I’m guessing 👍
100% Steve, if you're unsure follow the guidelines, pitch up test is always a good option or just ask a friend for a bit of advice if you know someone with the same tent. Yeah I had my bivi ready just in case but to be honest I had every faith in the OEX Bobcat 1.
Finally got a bobcat for £59, ive been looking every week since you posted this video and it was always £100 but ive finally got it for a decent price and i bloody love it
Oh Lance I’m chuffed for you pal! I’m over the moon you love it too, I am 100% sure anyone who purchased the Bobcat after watching my videos on it would be happy with it. Good on you for waiting for the best price Lance
Can I just say a massive thank you for supporting this final test video of the OEX Bobcat 1 tent. Your comments have been amazing. I've read awesome accounts, heard from some very experienced Outdoorsmen/women and have been loving the advice given for extreme wild camping. Thanks you to all who have enjoyed the video and decided to sub to my channel. I really do appreciate it! Cheers, Ant.
WOW Ant . Your a brilliant advocate for the bobcat mate. I remember watching chris`s video when he was on top of Pendle hill a couple of years ago. The wind was horrendous. Flippin scary indeed !!. Anyroad, I'm at last due to take the bobcat out for a maiden run very soon, along with mi grandson jack. So I have no fears of using it. 🤪All the best. Billy ..
Hi Billy how's thing pal? Yeah I love the Bobcat mate. I've not found anything worthy of a complaint. Yeah Chris as been out in some tough weather for sure. Wicked mate! You make sure you let me know your thoughts on it will ya? I'm 100% sure you'll love it! Enjoy matey and thanks again for stopping by pal
Some of those smaller tents are just awesome designs and cross sectional strength. I've a small wild country that I suspect is bombproof. 4 season is design but not necessarily strength. As some have pointed out, the Scarp is very light. Great vid . Ps. In winter. I use a bivi in the tent. Covers all bases 😁🤣😁
Hello John, thanks very much for commenting. Is that the Helm Compact One mate? I've heard good things about it. Still trying to get my hands on one. Yes, I normally have a bivi with me to protect my bag but of late I've been forgetting it. It's a must isn't it. Bug thanks John for watching pal, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight coshee micro. It's awesome but I use it less because of room. I'm normally in my Salewa Litreck 2. . . . . Always nice to see trips with no bloopers cut out 😂. Your getting great viewing numbers well done. I'm struggling but don't do them often enough 😎
Oh right yeah I've heard of them. I'll add it to the wish list John 😄. Ahh cheers, yeah I've enjoyed the novelty of having a well viewed video and answering each comment. It's been great! Thanks again pal 👍
Been over Sharp Edge 4 times but would never dream of it in that weather and you said you wanted an extreme camp and you sure got one there! What a test for both tents and both of you too, weather looked brutal and I bet a pound to a penny Chris had really headed down and was booked in for a night at a local hotel! I know your tent bucked at one point but for £69 it did not do too bad considering the conditions. Make the right call on going back to the van mind, could not see things getting better but it made a great watch, especially seeing Chris in tears at the end🤣. Cheers Alan
Haha, hi Alan yeah Chris was inconsolable mate, he knows the score that the Hilleberg is nothing but a flapping tarp in my OEX Bobcats rear view mirror 😆 🤣. Yeah weather was absolutely blowing mate, loved every minute up until the disaster. You've done it 4 time!! Wouldn't get me up once mate even in no wind and full sun lol. Thanks Alan for your comment and for watching mate, I really do appreciate it 👍
Oh my days Ant. That was some storm. So glad you guys are safe and sound. Shame about the the tents. Just so glad you're all safe and sound. 👍☺️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❤️
Hi Cath, I know, it was ace!! Hahah. Yeah we were never in any danger or would have been as we had prepared for it. A good safe pitch and a too team! Hope your ok and having a good week. Thanks as always
@@AntSurviveTheNight Hi Ant it sure was something to see that's for sure. It's a real shame what happened to the tents you three guys are brilliant the way you look out for each other. Looking forward to the next adventure. Keep safe it's Snowing ❄️🌨️🌨️❄️
Wow that was some serious conditions FairPlay on that ! I think people are getting obsessed with what a tent can do 70 mph wind is gonna cause some serious damage no matter what you pay. Hilliberg are the pinnacle and as such stood by their warranty #bobcatrules !
Hi mate, yeah it was a little fresh haha. I like to test things properly and know a Kits limitations. I think this little OEX gem is very hard to beat. Thanks mate for watching and commenting. Cheers, Ant.
Some of these so called 4season tents are too over complicated the scarp design looks ridiculous with all those tie out points welded all over the fly, was waiting to happen especially how thin that material is, I’ve got a van go banshee 2&3 and it don’t move in high winds solid👍
Hi Mick, I think the same mate. Don't get me wrong I like the look of it but it's way to complicated, struts that come out and lock into the ground and extra bars for support when things get tough! They got tough and it still didn't help it. I agree, if I'd have taken me Banshee I'd have stayed there all night not moving lol. Thanks pal for watching and commenting 👍
Nice …wonder if the French F2 tent would have held up in that??? You really need mountaineering tents like they use in the Himalayan mountains for wind like that…have fun stay safe.
Cheers Kenneth. That's a tough old tent that so who know eh! The other tents were 4 season tents well one definitely was and both failed but on the way out we met 3 lads who confirmed the next day on social media that their 3 OEX tens (one a Bobcat) Survive The Night 👍
Looks pretty refreshing! Having a guy line on the fabric panels like that with out a bungie and some snack will cause a tear with enough wind. MLD advices to be very careful with any mid panel pull out.
Definitely Norseman, I'm sure Tony as learned a massive life lesson and will be taking a lot more care when guying and pegging his tent out from now on pal. Great advice mate, thank you and thank you for watching and commenting, Ant 👍
This is what this game is all about, getting out of the comfort zone, and you guys sure did that! I'm gutted over the tent failures, especially by the response of TarpTent, but it looked like the Black Label would have survived despite the bent pole. I think a few of us Bobcat owners should get together and have a Bobcat festival 🤣 I noticed you pushing in your pegs with the heel of your hand. That hurts me after a few pegs so I use one of the dome shaped things that came with my walking poles, no pain!
Hi Stephen, yes mate definitely! I've been loving this testing period of the Bobcat, I really have mate and to get out and experience some wild wind in it (short lived I know) I just lived it. Yeah a terrible day Tony had yesterday trying to get the guy to understand that he wasn't slagging the tent off it was his attitude that was the problem. Please join us next Tues over in Chris's Channel as we are doing a live stream and big discussion about the trip. Yeah it was really soft peat so wasn't that bad at all. Good tip though. Thank you! Ant 👍
That rip in the scarp was partially down to user error possibly not checking condition of guy out point before going on a very precarious camp, but also being in conditions it isn't massively designed for. The tents may say 4 season, but that only really means for holding in heat, withstanding slightly higher winds or able to take some snow loading. To take 70+mph winds it needs to be a specific expedition tent. I would have any normal tent out in anything over 50mph winds max. These conditions are savage but it's a good test for sure. Winds like that can take down the most sturdiest of tents when it is gusting. Stepping outside the comfort zones is good though and knowing the limits is good albeit annoying as both tents not cheap. Hilleberg will honour new broken poles no problem, but not sure on Scarp, hopefully though. Sorry to hear their gear failed as we all cherish our gear and love getting outdoors
Hi mate, thanks for your comment. Tony has now sorted everything out with Tarp Tant now which is great, the Hilleberg poles are in their way so everyone is happy. I'm happy as there was no issues at all with mine haha. Yeah, as long as you are careful and have backup plans and the like by all means get yourself out doors and enjoy the wilder style camps. Thanks for taking the time to write this and hope you enjoyed the vid, cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight that’s brilliant to hear. One good thing about most premium brands is they have great aftercare. Your tent held up well, which is great, but I bet you don’t look forward to winds like that again? It was a good honest video, as too many videos only show the good, so it’s good to see the fails too. Hope the next camp is much more enjoyable 👌🏻⛺️
Ahh thanks so much mate. I must admit I was gutted to have had to abandoned the camp so fingers cross I would like to try again, call me mad hahah it was looking to be a fab adventure. Once again, thank you for taking the time to comment
The price of the Bobcat went up days after your first video of it. It’s bound to go up again now 😂 Did well didn’t it! Shame you all missed out on an overnighter, but at least you’re all safe. Nice one Ant👍
Hi Joe, yeah I saw that. We've seen it the other day for £55 which is still a bargain. Yeah it did me proud again Joe, I'm loving this testing period mate. I hope I've done you guys justice in the testing process? Yeah I would have loved to have experienced the full night mate but wasn't to be. As always thanks pal
Fantastic quality video Ant👍 To be fair, Tony was lucky that the tent failed when it did and not at 2am! Although, that said, it would have been funny watching the two of you squeezed into the bobcat! 😜
Cheers Benny and thanks for your support today on Instagram pal! Yes, we said exactly that mate, 77mph and -15 wind chill, there's no fun packing down and walking out in that mate is there. Haha yeah like Leon said he'd be in the porch haha. Thanks again matey 👍
That is the Bobcat tested and full approval there I reckon Ant for a 49quid tent. I am very impressed indeed. Gutted for Tony's tent and his response from the company. Great that you all stuck together and headed down the hill so fair play to all 3 of you. I do reckon that Bobcat would of survived the night and I am definitely sold on that. Let me know when it's on offer again. Great video even if it was cut short. Atb matey
Hi Andrew, thank matey. Yeah I think so mate, I would have like to have had the full night just to properly tick it off because I want you guys to have trust in me as a RUclipsr and know full well I won't pull the wool over your eyes about the gear I show. Big thanks mate for watching and yeah I'll keep an eye out pal
Hi mate, yes definitely mate and what's worse is their response. The owner is being a right piece of work with Tony. They guy seems to have zero custom service skills. I would definitely empty your basket. Thank you for watching and commenting pal 👍
Wow, I've seen lots of ppl with that tent. Looks the the guy points become weak spots. We found you, like your content and personality, so all subscribed. Ty
Hi there Maggi, thank you very much and I'm chuffed your enjoying my content, I really do appreciate that. Both Tony and the company have come to a happy agreement and all is being sorted now for the outcome we are hoping to have a live stream up and running soon to discuss the trip. Big thanks once again, Ant 👍
Tents have focused so much on becoming lighter but they are a bit fragile these days. I use Vango tents and they’ve stopped using ripstop material in a lot of their tents which is frustrating as they are now more prone to ripping. The days of tents like the Force Ten Nitro with 5000mm HH are almost over. That tent stood up to everything even gales in Scotland where the rest of my campsite was destroyed. It never failed. Cheaper materials are the norm now and to be honest most ultra-light brands don’t excite me, in fact they are useless. I need a tough tent not a fancy lightweight gimmick. 2.5kg is fine you just have to save weight elsewhere. I long for an affordable tent like what Vango used to produce….😢 I still have my Nitro 200 and nothing has come close to it for the money. Hilleberg tents are just insanely priced and clearly out to alienate the average outdoors person. Their whole marketing is targeted at the professional outdoor adventure community so it feels elitist and puts me right off.
I like the old vango tents. Or I used too. I also have a BL soulo. I did some wheeler dealing over a period of 3 years. Saved up and sold some gear. Got one of the first ones out. I wouldn’t call myself elitist or professional. Just a bit shrewd. I have bought sheer quality in that tent. I’ve chatted to Chris (mcm) and we both reckon he got a duff pole. Which they’re replacing. Just gotta be like Del Boy sometimes. 👍
Hi Finn, well I must say the quality of comments on this video have really blown me away. Some awesome stories and very, very good advice. I can not comment on older models as I haven't been in the camping game for that long. What I have is some amazing tents that I would quite happily take anywhere. I've got quite a few military shelters along with some awesome lighter options. I could never afford these more expensive branded tents, they look amazing but I'm happy with what I can afford. As long as I can get to do the camps I want to do such as amazing experiences like this then I'm over the moon. Thanks mate for watching and commenting. Cheers, Ant 👍
Yea its a shame i think the Force 10 Brand has lost its way quite a bit - certainly from their hay day in the 70s and 80s back in the classic A Frame design (that weights a ton - my old mans tent that he and his climbing partner used to use back in the day). The last F10 i dought and still have is the Spindrift 300 and had that in some horrendous conditions back 10+ years ago. But then again your back up at that 5Kg weight and well with weight comes strength, that and a solid design that thing was rigid as hell especially as the storm passes over and wind directions change. For me the Hillebergs killed it with the Kerlon 1200 and 1800 fabrics and the Spindrift was relogated to a decent base camp tent for a seaon or two given its generous size inside for 2. Its sadly now just held in the collection - will have to take her out one of these fine weeks for old times sake ;-)!
That's one of the downsides of the Bobcat. It's ideal when you're feet first into the wind. If the wind changes to side on then it pushes in on your space and is more of a rocky ride.
Hi Angry, yeah she was mate, it was a massive gust that came from the sides And bent the pole across me, it was mad! Thanks for watching pal, hope you enjoyed it
Hi Mark, thanks mate. Yeah we were always safe mate. We had planned for things to go pear-shaped. We just didn't expect it so soon haha. Yes, the pints and hot food were very welcome pal. Big thanks for watching, Ant 👍
I took my OEX phoxx 1v2 to snowdonia, I'm about 5.9f and I really didn't mind using it. It wasn't the lightest tent and the condensation was there but it was a good size, enough space in the vestibule for my 68l bag and other bits. I also have the coyote III which is also great. OEX is definately one of the better budget brands.
Hi Zutose, I'll have to have a look at the Phoxx, there's been a few good comments about it. Sounds like some good adventures had dude. Big thanks for watching the video and thanks for your comment. Cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight I've got a Phox 1 v2 and the vestibule is tiny , it just about takes a pair of boots ! As for a 68l bag hmmmmm would need to see proof. no way...
The OEX Bobcat is a cheaper copy of my old model Terra Nova Solo 1, but judging from this video the OEX performed as well as the Solo 1, I've been in 70+ mph winds and driving rain on Dartmoor and the Welsh mountains with zero problems in my Solo 1 tent. It doesn't always pay to go for so called high end high price item's and cheap doesn't alway's mean nasty.
Hello mate, yeah it's performance on Saturday was fab. I'm certain not saying this is better than the two tents it went out with but it held its own and on this day it was the last tent standing which I'm very proud of. Thanks very much for watching and commenting pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
Hiya Pal (think I might've posted this on your Facebook page.....) the Bobcat is the best tent I have ever owned, and is pretty much bombproof. My only criticism of it is it could be slightly larger to accommodate me and my size a bit more. Other than that, stood upto some pretty rough conditions to say the least. Thanks for posting, all the best, Nick
Hello Nick, thanks for watching and commenting on here too mate. Sorry, I've nit had chance to respond to FB post just yet, I'm juggling work and all the comments on here so just trying to find time but I'll get back to you on there too pal. Yeah the Bobcat is a e isn't it! I can understand re making it bigger but I guess it's to keep the weight down as its classed as a hiking / biking tent so not sure they could really, good point though. Yeah some tasty wind on this one pal. Thanks, Ant 👍
Bloody hell Ant that’s a kick in the teeth for the so called winter tents !!! Good the bobcat survived and thankfully the failures occurred in daylight hours . I like the way Scarptent are trying to say it was not a failure of the tent and that someone tripped over a guy line !! You might not have got an overnighted done but a conclusive test on the Bobcat 👍👍 atb Dave
Hi Dave, I know mate, I truly was nit expecting the outcome. Yes, I'm so chuffed with this little tent it's definitely the best purchase of last year hands down. I've had so much fun testing it out mate. Yeah, glad it wasn't 2am when things went wrong. I know mate. The owner of the company is a right piece of work, he's just not having any of it. This certainly won't do him any favours for future sales. Yeah I feel it was another rock solid test on this one mate. Big thanks for watching pal and this comment, cheers Dave 🍻
Poor Tony looked devastated staring at the torn fly. The bobcats at £100 now. Maybe they've seen your vids and brought the price up! At least have Tony's van for backup. Mind you be squeeze all 3 on the rock and roll bed..
Hi Phil, I know, he looks so miserable, old and frail 😆 🤣 😂. Yeah, Leon as found it for £55 last night so there are still deals going pal. Yes, the van was an option dude but they all snore really loud hahah. Thanks pal!
S**t the bed. They was lucky it wasn't in the middle of the night when they failed..can't wait get out in my bomb proof bobcat next week.. best make sure I find some cover just incase. Top video pal even if it was just a day camp and a brew 🤣
Hi James, yeah I know mate we said that. If ut was 2am and the full 77mph winds it would have been hardcore! Yes, go enjoy the Bobcat pal, as long as your careful and like you say, pitch up correctly you'll be laughing mate. Enjoy buddy!
People who buy these fancy expensive tents. I don’t know. 🤨 It was a crazy day that like. We never even got our packs out the car. Straight to the pub where we stayed 😂 dunno what to say about the scarp. Same thing happened to my old Nallo. It ripped like that. The peg got ripped out and it tore. But it was really old and the fabric was faded and weakened. It shouldn’t happen to a reasonably new tent. I hope Tony gets through to them. Shocking response. I’m getting a OEX tent now. Anyone want to buy a soulo 😂😂😂. Good little account of events mate. Send bobcats. Atb. 👍
I know right! 😆. Yeah it certainly wasn't a fair weather camping day was it Andy. Great to see you though mate, shame we couldn't have spent the night in the pub with you both. Tony's got it sorted now pal, it back off to the U.S. I'm sure all will be well now. Haha yeah the OEX gear is cracking mate. Unofficial ambassador me like 👍 Cheers buddy for watching

I can't believe it I've sold my bobcat 1 to n old friend for 50 qid, he's never had much money and I gave him a 55 ltr bag wish I'd kept it now , I've got a Coleman viper 1 practically the same tent 😊,, getting another bob1 👍
always have spare tents in the car its better to walk back a few miles to get a tent than having to go home, i have a variety of different shelters in my car in case of accidents
Hi Sandy, I know mate. We had planned for it to fail (and it most likely would have) at some point on the camp, we had back up plans ready but didn't expect it to be the other way round and for both to go down! Madness mate! Glad it happened so early on and not 2am. Thanks mate for watching and commenting 👍
Great vid , I've got the tt moment dw . Are the outside poles for snowloading and freestanding only ? Then in a windy day the scarp is set up just like a hilli Atko with no external poles ? . Just a thought .something for me to ponder with my moment dw tent .think I prefer the bobcat 😆 Great fun video ! The bobcat what a champ 🏆 😅👍
Hi mate, oh boy I was looking at Tony's tent thinking it's to space age for me haha, give me a simple one pole design like the Bobcat haha. Big thanks pal for watching, good of you. Cheers, Ant 👍
Hi again Cap, yeah definitely. If you've watched all the videos featuring the Bobcat that I've done, the kit I normally take is everything you would need on a comfortable overnighter. Everything fits inside one half of the vestibule and the other side is spare 👍
What an unexpected end to a exciting hike. Sorry for Tony and his high end tent. Would have been fun to see you sharing either of those tents 😅 But in the end it was wise to end the hike and head down to the pub. Those pints looked mighty tasty too!!
Hi Anders mate, yeah I was gutted when packing up. Would have been a fab camp. Haha Tony was fine with me possibly jumping in with him but Chris, no way he wouldn't have it lol. Yeah pint and pub grub, love it! Thanks buddy for watching
Hi Graham, they are OK mate, all as ended well, both tents will be fixed and tge Bobcat.... lives on another day till I can come up with another plan to destroy it lol. Thanks mate 👍
It looks to me as though the crossing poles have not been correctly fitted. They are supposed to go through the grosgrain loop on the apex of the hoop and secured at the corners with the velcro loops. From your video it looks like the poles weren’t secured at any of those points. Maybe the excessive movement of the unsecured poles caused the rip. Additionally the roof panel lifter guy is incorrectly set up. It should be used in conjunction with a trekking pole as you can see in many videos on RUclips. I don’t know whether that was an issue too.
Hi Blog, lots of issues pointed out there mate, Tony's video is out Thursday so looking forward to what he has to say about it. Thank you very much for watching pal and I appreciate your comment. Cheers, Ant 👍
I think tarptents response is disgraceful and I for one will not be making my purchase now. So glad I’ve seen this and so glad you all got off safe. Could of been a different story early hours of the morning. 🙏
Hi Nugget, yeah it was a hard day for Tony trying to sort that out. They have come to an agreement now thankfully. Better customer service skills wiukd have won the day. Yeah all safe and sound matey. Thanks very much for watching and commenting pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
Hi Timsy, I hate the gopro 9 mate, it constantly freezes and you then panic thinking your gonna loose your footage. I would definitely not recommend this camera
@@AntSurviveTheNight I thought it was something different from a gopro, the footage was really sharp and had good colour with a bit of punch to it. I’m waiting for them to sort out the focus problem on the DJI Action 3 before moving on from my Action 1.
@@AntSurviveTheNight I rate my Action 1, get an hour or so from the battery shooting 4K 30FPS. It’s never frozen or shut down. Low light can let it down slightly but then again all ‘action cameras’ suffer to a greater or lesser degree. The ‘3’ looks fantastic for the price and I will end up getting one but…. the early cameras had an out of focus issue ( I believe a parts supplier for DJI had assembled the lens/sensor incorrectly) so I’m waiting for confirmation that it’s been fixed.
You had me on it's never froze lol. I've just updated the gopro which I haven't done for a while due to me not choosing to use it. I'll give it one last outing before I either keep it or sell it and get a Action. Thanks for the run down mate
That settles it.....tomorrow I'm putting my Black Label on a garage sale & purchasing an OEX Bobcat 1 🤣🤣🤣.........just kidding......glad you guys are okay.....stay safe out there....cheers 🍻
Hi Doe, it was a little more than that mate but all is sorted with the company and Tony, after a few more emails and getting to know each other all is well. Thanks for watch mate and also thanks gor commenting. Cheers, Ant 👍
Hello pal, yeah they were getting wild just had we had to pack down. Walking time without a pack 45mins I'd say mate maybe a bit longer. Cheers for watching, Ant 👍
Hi John, if OEX got in touch I'd certainly be happy to test their gear for them, it's a fab brand. Thank you very much, this is a very kind compliment. Cheers for watching mate, Ant 👍
Hi John, if OEX got in touch I'd certainly be happy to test their gear for them, it's a fab brand. Thank you very much, this is a very kind compliment. Cheers for watching mate, Ant 👍
Hi Gazza, thanks for watching both pal, we appreciate it. It's true, you can experience winter camping on a budget that's for sure. I try to promote the budget camps the best I can. Thanks pal
Great stuff mate - a sad end to a promising day, experiencing some fantastic winter conditions. Pleased to say Hilleberg's response has been as expected - faultless - they are replacing the damaged pole sections. I believe the DAC pole (they're NOT made by Hilleberg) was faulty. As for TarpTent - very disappointing in their response to Tony - I will never buy another TarpTent. The Bobcat did well mate!!!!
@Rooksfoot 1 i suggest you watch the video again. It's blatantly obvious that the crossing poles are not attached as per tarptents pitching instructions.
Hi Chris mate! It was going to be an amazing camp wasn't it. You could feel it building as we enjoyed the day. It was just so premature ending like that. Great news you have got yours sorted or are sorting it and as of today Tony also on with getting his sorted too pal. Always a real pleasure and such a laugh being out with you dude.
Hey Ant - If I could offer some advice, the problem is not the tents, its the location you chose. I've spent many years camping in those areas and even with excellent gear, the wind hitting your tent will drive you crazy all night. You need to look for areas that are in the lee of the wind. This will make sure you don't fatigue the tent over time and it will also make for a more comfortable nights camp. However, I always pack some in ear headphones to ear plugs just in case 👍 Even alpine tents that are very tough still need digging into snow to make them perform the best in strong winds. You also want to pitch the tent tail to wind for most designs to offer the lowest resistance to those large gusts!! Looked like fun anyways 😄 Best wishes Michael & Esme!
Hello Michael, hope you are well mate. Yeah no problem, it's been a great video for fabulous comments and sharing advice. The plan was to go out and experience a extreme winter camp. We had planned to head up to Robinson but thought better of it as the top of the mountain is totally flat and we would really be in for a night. We opted to drop lower with protection but a place where we could experience the evening and still be totally safe. Yes, we had all the gear (apart from my bivi, I forgot it) ear plugs were definitely on the list haha. Great to hear from you and big thanks for coming over and having a watch Michael
Oh mate definitely. I'm looking at the hooped bivi made by Alpkit next. I'm wanting to camp near a few listed structures in the future and think one of those would be perfect. Thanks Michael, I appreciate you mate.
You said your tent collapsed in on itself mate, have you double checked that there isn’t a slight bend in the pole now? Every time my terra nova has done that its resulted in pole bending! Cheers 🍻
Hi Paul, thanks mate. Yeah it double checked it when I got home and was drying the gear out. All seems fine with it bud. It was complete madness how it literally bent and sprang back after nearly touching my nose lol. Thank yiu mate for watching and commenting, Ant 👍
I had my ancient Terra Nova duolite tourer collapse in 60mph winds (gusts) it was generally about 40mph in the Shetlands. A guyline snapped. The person next to me had a scarp 1 and it survived just about, it was moving about a bit the poles didn't buckle or bend. The cross over poles on the scarp 1 (in this video) were not fixed to the corners with their velcro straps. That's why it failed. User error as far as I'm concerned. It clearly isn't set up correctly even though in the video you are saying it is. It might not be Tony's fault..... If he's never used the cross over poles before. But he should have practiced. (It does look like they are attached correctly on the non ripped side) The scarp used in the Shetlands didn't have a guy line attached where Tony did. (Where it ripped) but I think it was the flexing of the cross over poles not fitted correctly that did the damage. I think the more modern scarp has space for an extra centre pole. I'd have double poled the hilleberg if you knew this weather was coming. I think I'd take down this video or edit out everything apart from how well the bob cat did.
Thanks for your comment Damian, sound like you two had a tough one. Unfortunately yes Tony made mistakes that I'm sure he won't make again. He is a experienced camper but we all make mistakes. Thanks very much for watching and commenting on the video, Ant 👍
Why take it down or edit it out? If you was there, you would assume that Tony had pitched it right, considering he has had it a long time, and that the fact Ant does not own a scarp tent and does ask if it was pitched correctly. All I see in this vid is Ant ribbing Tony cause his cheap tent survived. He even says in the vid, that if the bobcat fails, he will get in the scarp. These things happen. Its just a tent and no tent can with stand stronger freak winds, just look at trees that get up rooted. No malice in this what's so ever.
Bet the lads were gutted Tony should carry black tape he could have fixt it 🤔🤔 there again probably not hopefully he gets it sorted the cheaper tent survived the evening atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Hi Jimmy mate, na these wild campers done carry bushcraft items that will save them and their tents, these wild camper breeds just want to sit jn their tents all day sleeping 😆. Yeah they have managed to sort them out mate, both getting repaired. Hope your OK pal?
Hi Sue, their kit is fast becoming a favourite of mine. I have a few items of kit now made by them and loving each one. Definitely, for some uts all about the name. Thank you Sue 👍
Hi Steve, very true mate, doesn't matter what kit you have it still can happen. Definitely mate, we wouldn't have made a decision to stay on, no chance. Thanks pal for watching!
I honestly have no idea how they can call the scarp a 4 season tent. The fabric is what, 20d? Sure it's silicone coated both sides which increases its strength but nothing is getting away from the fact that 20d and 30d fabrics are not going to work on tent structures like the scarp in strong winds. 20-30d fabrics work on tipi or mid style tents, as well as stuff like the Trailstar because those style shelters work WITH the weather, not against it like more dome like structures which often use brute force to stay up. With wind like you get in the UK you need a tent that works with the wind or is strong enough made that it can withstand such gusts. In other words, just buy a Trailstar 🤣
Hi mate, thanks very much for your comment. Well, according to the manufacturer he says it can withstand that kind of battering but unfortunately Tony did not set up the tent correctly which resulted in it failing like it did. Who know mate but I know for a fact I was more than happy with my OEX Bobcat. Thanks for watching buddy and also for your comment too! Cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight Yeah I seen that. Even so, the fact it ripped in a giant perfect square is highly suspect. The ripstop threads really didn't do much to negate the damage
Condolences to Tony. I’d love to know what the vulnerability was on that scarp. Does he think it might be cos of that optional pull out guy? You know that one some people tie out to trekking poles? Or ripped cos of the spines? It’s shocking. He’s taken it very well tho. Good for you on the bobcat tho.😅
Hello Chris, thanks very much mate. We are actually having a live stream discussion next Tuesday over on Chris's Channel. I hope you can join us pal in the chat. We want as many people and their comments and advice as we can mate. You'll be very welcome. Yeah Tiny is sound mate and yeah the Bobcat rules!!
Humbly and only my opinion because I know you all have a ton of experience but, I've personally found that Corries, in extremely windy conditions can become a vortex. Random gust speeds are horrendous. The way the bobcat switched from one side to the other when de-pitching kinda shows this. Great vid but gutted for Chris and Tony.
Hello mate, thanks very much for your comment. Yeah the original plan was to head up to Robinson but being on a open plain on top of a mountain would have been way too much. We opted for Scales Tarn as a bit of a break rather than a constant barage. It was definitely the better safer option. Loved it mate. Thanks again buddy, Ant 👍
By coincidence, I’ve just sold my Scarp & got a NORTENT Vern 1, arrived yesterday. Always felt the scarp fly was too thin for 4 season, the Vern feel more robust
Hi Pete, I've not heard of the NortentcVern 1, I'll have to look it up. The Scrap is a 3/4 season tent which I'm told is strong when set up correctly. Unfortunately in this film Tony got the set up wrong which caused the rip so we are being told. Who knows, I don't own a Scarp 1 and I've no doubt I won't but people say they are a top tent. Thanks mate for watching and commenting on the video, Ant 👍
Hi mate thank you and thanks for you concern matey. Yeah I'm pretty sure I have long Covid if I'm honest mate. It goes then it's back with a vengeance.
I'm not sure that un-sleeved poles are the 'great idea' they are claimed to be . A test against a single offset walking pole pyramid (wooden) would have been good. Don't forget to use stones (just put them back). I've found in very high wind that as low a profile is best, even a poncho over a vertical packframe is good.
Hi Roger, the setup I used worked very well, unfortunately Tony did set his tent up correctly leading to his tents demise. Always good to use stones yes, I tend to used them especially when I'm hot tenting. Thanks very much for watching and commenting pal. Cheers, Ant 👍
I've owned a Scarp 1 and to think you can take it out in 70mph winds is just nuts, and then to pitch it up wrong is always going to end in tears.
Atleast explain how it was pitched wrong when they said otherwise
i do not own this tent to explain. please watch their videos and you will see. Thanks
@@SocialCampingthe crossover poles were not attached at the corners on one end as you can clearly see in the video during clips of the tent. An unfortunate accidental error which anyone could make. 😢
Hi Leeroy, Very true, I'm sure he's learnt from his mistakes. Thanks buddy for commenting and for watching this video, Ant 👍
You and your loved ones stay save and healthy
Greetings from Germany
Very good point about the spare bivvy.
Definitely Nigel
Hi Timsy, yes definitely a fab purchase mate. I am sure he will love it. Yeah money well spent I say mate. Cheers, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight it sort of shows that even if you spend a lot of money on a tent, sometimes, just sometimes it will let you down in an unpredictable way.
That's true mate. Anything can give no matter what it is
Just goes to show, you don't need to pay silly money for a solid tent.
Class mate, make me one too hahaha!
@@AntSurviveTheNight Great vids though pal. Keep ‘em coming 👍🏼
Thank you Tower, good of you pal and will do
I have the Bobcat 1 tent.
Let me know how you get on will you.
wow the good old bobcat the only one standing and its great to finally be in the bobcat club 👍we can say ant you have done go outdoors proud
Ahh thanks man, very kind of you to say that. I'm actually collaborating with OEX which is a result of the Bobcat films.
I really love my OEX Phoxx II V II and OEX Jackal Il. The OEX brand is definitely worth a look for the cost conscious buyer.
Hi Eddie, I couldn't agree more. A fantastic brand with equally fantastic kit. Thanks very much for watching. Cheers, Ant 👍

Will do Ant 😊
@bunkersfortificationsandme7688 thanks Billy mate

Aww cheers Cath, yeah great entertainment for us out there experiencing it and you guys watching it hopefully. Thank you!
Nice video Ant. Lesson learnt - don't waste your money on a tarptent.
Thanks mate, I wouldn't go near that company with a barge pole simply because of the customer service Tony received was beyond shocking!
I think a few of us Bobcat owners should get together and have a Bobcat festival 🤣
I noticed you pushing in your pegs with the heel of your hand.
Thank you! Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight Nice, I shall be subbing to Chris, and look forward to the livestream 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight Oh cool! I like live streams. I've already sub'd to Chris's channel.

Thanks pal
Tony would be sleeping in the porch haha
Cheers Benny and thanks for your support today on Instagram pal!
Yes, we said exactly that mate, 77mph and -15 wind chill, there's no fun packing down and walking out in that mate is there. Haha yeah like Leon said he'd be in the porch haha. Thanks again matey 👍
😆
What a great video.
(Knot wise, with the guy line around the pegs, surely it's only half a clove hitch? But it's a good idea. )
Hi Billy yeah your right there pal, it just secures the peg around the line much better, great for weather like this!
Well that has definitely put me off buying a scarp 1,had one in the basket aswell. Thanks for the video and the test I bet Tony is gutted.
@@AntSurviveTheNight my pleasure.
That's fair enough Del Boy! 😆 🤣
@@AntSurviveTheNight you know it makes sense 😉
Hi Angry, yeah she was mate, it was a massive gust that came from the sides
And bent the pole across me, it was mad! Thanks for watching pal, hope you enjoyed it
Nice one Ant, the Bobcat never cease to amaze me, disappointed in the Hille and Scarp 😢
Ho Phil mate, wish you could have come pal. Yeah I know bit out the blue that, wasn't expecting it. Cheers pal for watching
Mate like I said to Chris (MCM) the tents can be replaced, glad you all got to the pub and had a few beers and warm food to eat.

@@AntSurviveTheNight It's proved its worth bud, all the best. Paul.
It certainly has mate!
Looks like you and your tent.....

Poor Tony looked devastated staring at the torn fly. The bobcats at £100 now. Maybe they've seen your vids and brought the price up! At least have Tony's van for backup. Mind you be squeeze all 3 on the rock and roll bed..

Yes, go enjoy the Bobcat pal, as long as your careful and like you say, pitch up correctly you'll be laughing mate. Enjoy buddy!
People who buy these fancy expensive tents. I don’t know. 🤨
It was a crazy day that like.
Atb. 👍

Good old bobcat 👏👏👍

Great quality footage from the camera, even in poor conditions.
The picture quality is great for sure but it's untrustworthy Timsy. Yes, I've heard good things about the action. I'm looking at them myself mate

The fact that the bobcat didn't break and a scarp 1 and a hilleberg got a bent pole is just crazy and the hilleberg is 890 pounds.

Very true Leon. All are quality tents but I have yet to break the Bobcat 😆
I would have them too for sure haha.
it depends if the tent has been stored in good conditions or is has been standing in the sun… it does not say anything really .

The Bobcat did well mate!!!!
from reading Henry's reply it wasn't pitched right, so user error🤷
@@dancew77 even tho promotional pictures show the tent pitched in the exact same way....
@Rooksfoot 1 i suggest you watch the video again. It's blatantly obvious that the crossing poles are not attached as per tarptents pitching instructions.
Also the guy line that’s meant to go over trekking poles was not secured properly
@@AntSurviveTheNight A bivi would have been a fun experience 😄 - Keep up the great videos 👍

(It does look like they are attached correctly on the non ripped side)
The scarp used in the Shetlands didn't have a guy line attached where Tony did.
I have been done.... my bobcat was £55
Haha bargain Peter!
Gotta love OEX tents tho there’s an element of snobbery that I think makes some people hate on them in favour of bigger names..
Hi Sue, their kit is fast becoming a favourite of mine. I have a few items of kit now made by them and loving each one.
Definitely, for some uts all about the name. Thank you Sue 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight do descent sleeping bags.
I've not tried their bags yet mate, I'd certainly like to
@@AntSurviveTheNight oex 300 in the summer. Oex 900 in the winter. Spot on .
I'll have a look into them and give them a good testing I reckon. Thanks
Well that was some video it just shows that any tent can fail good call to pack up call it a day 👍
Hi Steve, very true mate, doesn't matter what kit you have it still can happen.
How can you say the OEX outperformed the Hilleberg Soulo BL? By what reason? The Soulo BL was not even there, or was it?
Hi Franz, what the full video mate. It's all on there. Cheers, Ant 👍
He didn't attach the cross over poles to the velcro corner points. They are meant to sit on top of the carbon fibre corner poles.
He didn't set it up correctly. Cross over poles should have been connected to the velcro corners.
Gaping holes can be good 🤣
In summer J 😆
Head up to Shetland camping the wind like this all year round
Yes please!! 😄
Wow, wasn't expecting that result. Great video thanks for sharing 👍🏕️
Hi Duncan, me either mate 😆. Thank you for watching and commenting pal, Ant 👍
OEX might be in contact to use this footage for an advert lol
Hi Scott mate, I'd love for them to contact me. Their gear is ace. Cheers pal!
💪💪💪
Thanks Grizzly 👍
@AntSurviveTheNight agreed the summit would have been a total constant blast. No win situation
Definitely mate, I'll stay away from there for now that is haha
Please get Chris a patch or sticker for his hille "my other tents a Bobcat" lol ATB
Lol that's soooo fun Rock. I'll get him one, haha
what the poles on bobcat made of ?
Would love to know how the Nortent Vern 1 would have faired
Hi Robert, I'll have to get one 😀. Thanks, Ant 👍
Just looked at these and they are very similar to the Scarp aren't they. The colour is excellent
Good vid Ant more concerned About that cough have you had it checked out , I see your still suffering ATB !
Hi mate thank you and thanks for you concern matey. Yeah I'm pretty sure I have long Covid if I'm honest mate. It goes then it's back with a vengeance.
damn, whoat a rough country australia is, not to mention that pretty language. cheers mate.
Good day mate!
I think the price of the bobcat will see a rise in price after this 😂
Hi Chris, I think it has mate 😆. Cheers for watching pal
If that has happened to the scarp tent it will happen again for sure
Yeah made a mess of ut William that's for sure pal. Thanks for watching pal 👍
Just when you think you know how the world works 🤯
Thanks Philip, hope you've enjoyed the video. Cheers, Ant 👍
