It got utterly hammered in storms whilst wild camping on the west coast of Ireland for 27 days(my first ever wild camp) this year. I love it despite the weight. Peace of mind makes the expense well worth it! It'll last too.
You wild camped for 27 days? That is savage, The hilleberg tent's definitely have their drawbacks but your story sounds very similar to mine. It's just a case of biting the bullet. Welcome to the Hilleberg family! A cracking tent. No need to explain your purchase, it's your money and your choice and no other hikers were harmed with your purchase of this tent. A lovely spot for a lovely tent. Yeah, it's a tent that rewards careful inner gear placements alright. The winter will not instill any fear in you now! Good stuff.
Thanks a mill, I can't wait to take it back out. It's such a solid tent, I can't wait for there to be snow on the ground. Cheers for joining me,, have a good one 🍀
I love the Hilleberg. I must get one but bigger than that. There is a guy I follow in Scandinavia who got caught in a storm & spent three days in his Hilleberg. It stood up brilliantly to the winds & he looked perfectly comfortable inside reading his book.
Hillebergs are in a league of their own when it comes to strength. Having one that's a little bigger would be no harm for those long winter nights especailly getting caught out like that chap did
That was super Jason!! So glad you treated yourself to a strong tent that you can rely on for the winter - you deserve the best! May it bring you much adventure in the winter months ahead...well done for pulling the trigger and going for it!! 🏆 Your photography was gorgeous on this one too, really tastefully done and showing off the beauty of where you were so well...really enjoyed it 😎
Cheers Miriam, I am delighted with the tent. It should serve me well over the winter. I saw you popped up a video, I'll be watching that as soon as I get time to sit down with a cup of tea 😁
It certainly is a great looking tent! I have the exact same one as you. Your videos really show it off to its best so I had to buy one for myself and I absolutely love it! Thank you. J
Hey Jason, that is deadly. They are a beautiful tent. I think I might be a bit of a fan boy now after getting my Soulo so the biggest problem with them is not the price, but its that when you have one, you want another 🤣 but which one 🤔
true.. the last thing you want when weather gets wild is your tent blowing away with you in it 😳 coldest night i was out was around 26°f with ice on the inside. not exactly a 5 star hotel stay with mints on the pillow lol this winter coming up globally looks to break records so having back up plans are in the mix.
I'll have my car set up for car camping incase I need to get myself down the mountain sooner than planned. I'm hoping for some nice winter camps this year 😁
Very nice video Jason. Next time I hope the rain stays away for you. Thanks for the Shout Out and you are most welcome. A lot of the gear does cost quite a bit. You deserve a little help. Thanks for sharing, as always...
Thanks Alan, I got even worse winds on the next night out and I was in a far cheaper tent 😄 Thanks again for helping me out, I really appreciate it. Cheers for watching, hopefully you'll get to watch the next one 🍀
Great camping spot for a first time with your soulo. And nicely made video. I made the same choice some months ago and took it on a 2 week hike. The rock solid performance in wind and rain (haven't had brutal horizontal rain yet) is awesome. The decent sleep that comes with it, priceless. Like you mentioned, plenty headroom sitting up, useful bit of extra space inside for stuff. Just big enough for longer hours inside. If you want a bit more extra ventilation, you can stuff some grass under the outer on both sides. I bring a small micro fiber cloth to remove condensation in the morning, no biggie.
I was delighted with that spot, it definitely sheltered me from the worst of the wind and when there is snow on the ground that little spot will be even better. 100% agree, the peace of mind alone is worth it. I can't wait to take it back out. Cheers for the tips, I'll definitely keep those in mind. I did have a little dish cloth with me, those extra absorbent ones. That does a great job. Cheers for joining me 🍀
it depends how much you love camping and how often you go out thats why i never got one because i only go out now and then so i think my cloud peak 3 season tent was spot on
I'm hoping to use this a lot over the winter, we seem to be getting more and more storms every year. I won't be storm chasing but the weather can be rough at the best of times
Nice to see you in the Hilleberg Soulo mate. I've been eyeing one up for a while. Such an amazing bit of kit and looks nice a cosy. Look forward to seeing how you get on with it. Great video as always. I keep saying this, but I must get over to Ireland for a hike and wild camp at some point. Such a stunning place.
I'm looking forward to taking it back out again, such a nice tent. If you have the time for a multi day trip the Beara way or the Kerry way would be worth looking at 🍀
Just watched English woodsman whilst making Sunday dinner, and now about to enjoy your latest edition. Two of my favourite RUclipsrs in quick succession! Happy days 👍🏻 Great videos Jason, thanks.
The Staika looks like a beast, I reckon you can't go too far wrong with either the Soulo or the Unna. Maybe the Soulo is overkill for most trips too? Either way they are all cracking tents, Hilleberg are market leaders in my opinion when it comes to strong reliable tents 💪
Canny go wrong with that tent mate.......it's an absolute icon, it's totally bomber as well. Enjoy it and hope you have many great trips in it. ATB from Scotland.
Great location Jason and the video is work was really good. So as I said, you can always have another tent 😂🤦🏼♂️👍 Awesome tent and you more than most RUclipsrs need this for your camps mate 👍 I can see the quality and am sure it will help you relax in the weather you get out in. 👍😀
I think there a cracking tent yes very expensive but in winter you know it is dependable.personally I just wish the inner was a little wider.i have the hilleberg niak for 3 season and the inner is just perfect for me so I wish the soulo was the same lol
I totally agree, even now when I am about to look at the weather forecast, it would have to be pretty severe for me not to go camping. The small footprint is great for giving more options on where to pitch but any added internal space would be great or even just a few additional pockets 😄
Congrats man, I was waiting for more reasons beside the price, can't see any way you went wrong there. Looks like you get what you pay for with these and if you ever want to sell up and try another tent then a Hilleberg holds its value. I'm also envious of the absolutely beautiful spot you found - gotta go back there sometime.
Yeah you are spot on and because I bought it second hand I won't lose out if I do decide to sell it on but I reckon she's a keeper. I'll be heading back there when we have snow on the ground, I can't wait 🥶
Had an akto and soulo in the past. Returning to hillwaking , got an akto as can double it's strength with 1 pole, the soulo needs 3 which would make it too heavy. Now one rule of hilleberg camping is you must not be a chicken and must camp in the windiest spot possible ontop of hiils.
I had an Abisko and I couldn't sit up inside which made it very uncomfortable. I was trying to find a lighter option than the Soulo that was equally as strong but I had no such luck. The Akto looks like a cracking tent. While I was walking up I saw some exposed spots and said to myself, I could just pop it there. Purely because of the tent I had with me, I have even less excuses now to go camping 😄
@@RamblingOn An issue I had with the Soulo and my Tarra I had, is total overkill for your average storm making them boring. The akto was great as whilst bombproof , it made the storms appear alot more violent making it much more fun.
World best 1 Perwon Tent on the Market. PERIOD There is realy no need for the BL Version of it. I ve my since 2008. Made several multi week Tours in Iceland with it. It allways kept me save under all serious conditions.
It set the bench mark for every other tent to live up to and I don't regret buying it. I can't wait to get back out in it again. Iceland would be class, it's not the lightest tent to carry for multi days but for the peace of mind it's worth it I reckon especially in an exposed landscape like Iceland. Cheers for watching 🙌
Great video, very entertaining, I think your filming is real good in harsh conditions... Same tent here in same colour... No tent compares. New sub here
Looked like you had a be-free filter at 2:18?! What was the bottle or container you were using there , please?. Thanks from Pembrokeshire, for bringing us along on another one.
Yeah that was the be-free, the bottle was a hydrapak flux 1 litre. They are pricey but have a lifetime guarantee. I had two of the older models develop pin holes and they were replaced by hydrapak with these upgraded versions no questions asked. Here is a link amzn.to/3RVxykq Cheers for joining me, have a good one 👍🍀
I've seen a second hand soulo for €590 but I've seen them rip in strong winds, so I'm still to be convinced. I'll watch this video later and see how you get on. Cheers
Great little post there Jason. You're photography is so good; it looked professionally lit; and I don't know what camera you're using, but it's so good! Even in really low light; some of the shots, low over the water; turned out so well. There were no pixelated shots, even when in near darkness. I have to admit that that's a nice looking tent. But, I very much doubt that you'll encounter weather bad enough that your helm compact would not do the job that the hilly does. I would truly love to see a comparison video of the two tents out in awful storm force weather. Folk rave about the hilly; but often it seems to be folk that gave talked themselves into buying such an expensive tent; then feel the need to justify their purchase! So you're unlikely to get an actual constructive argument! The helm has extra wide pole sleeves; so technically you could double pole it. Would that make it even stronger than a thousand pound tent; for a fraction of the cost? Again, I would love to see a practical experiment/comparison. Clearly, you know what you're doing, (despite some excellent comedy classic fails, in the past, that everyone goes through at some point..haha) just look at that excellent choice of a great sheltered campsite. A good pitch. Taught guys. The door facing away from the wind. Just the use of that knowledge alone; means that you can probably get away with a lesser tent; than someone without your camp experience. Anyway, hope you don't think I'm bad mouthing your new "baby" haha🤣! Because I'm not. Horses for courses; and each to his own..I'm just fascinated by what goes on in the world of Marketing. And what so often turns out to be the "Emperor's new Clothes." Anyway, sorry to harp on about "gear porn," it was a great post, beautifully shot, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad you filmed it! Love the tiny comedy moment, when you missed your cup, and poured boiling water all over your new ground sheet. Then really casually, mopped it up with a tissue..whilst talking to the camera, so we wouldn't notice!😉 I'm only teasing you Jason! Take care buddy!😊
Cheers Tim, I'm trying different things and the camera is worth the weight it has to be said. I see where you are coming from and I understand that people buy tents like the Hilleberg Soulo for the wrong reasons. I would have happily bought a more affordable and lighter tent if I could have found one that was constructed as well as the Soulo. The helm compact just doesn't have the same construction and at some point it will fail when the hilleberg will keep going. I'm not prepared to damage the helm in order to test both tent's side by side in harsh conditions. I have no doubt that the helm can hold up to some pretty harsh weather but when things are kicking off I would rather have a tent like the Hilleberg, for the peace of mind if nothing else. I wouldn't say it was marketing that made me purchase it, I put a lot of research into it and could see why it would be the best option. Only when I had it pitched in front of me could I really appreciate the materials and the workmanship that has gone into it. I don't mind at all, like you say each to your own and I enjoy your comments. You always speak your mind and I can respect that. 😄 ah sure I'm not perfect, I spill things, knock things over, forget things and have to bail out from time to time. It's all part of it , cheers for the comment. I'll be taking the tiny tank out again soon 🍀
Got the Allak 3,Bulletproof tent IMO,I motorbike camp so weights not an issue ,but love setting it up with the Trangia and settling down,,Also the Go light? youve got ,,had mine for ages and left it on for over a day and still 2 bar left in it
Oh yeah the Allak is a beaut, have you got the full trangia coookset? I have a copy of the Go light, mine is a blackdog lantern. It is a sister company of nature hike but it's a great little lantern
@r13gbs I've almost bought one of those setups on more than one occasion 😄 The mini looks cool too. Someday, I'll pick one up. Hopefully you can get to try it out soon
Nice one Jason. Looked a great spot mate. That is the epic tent 👌👏👏 looks spot on hope you get on with it 👍👍. Loving the Abisko 😃 if you get fed up with the Soulo you know where I am 😃😄🤣🤣 Take care Cheers Graham
Nice one as usual, Jayo. Camera work was beautiful. Glad to see the tent's working out. Not that I have the money for it right now, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be tall enough for me to sit up in - I'm 6ft3. What do you think?
Cheers Oran, I'd say you'd be grand inside. My head was toughing but if you centre yourself properly you should be grand. I'll pay closer attention to those things when I'm out for the longer winter nights so I'll know more then
@@RamblingOn Cheers. Although I've got my new durston xmid and no more tents for me till next summer at the earliest... I promise... really...hopefully...
Sorry, but they are condensation traps. These Hilleberg tents are designed and built for the extreme cold but dry winter conditions in Scandinavia, not the mild but very damp climate of the UK & Ireland. There are better and cheaper tents for our climate.
I do bring a 20*20cm microfiber cloth, to dry the inside of the outer tent for my Soulo. With the Unna, Hilleberg has provided 2 strap options to raise the sides slightly to provide both ventilation at the bottom and the top. With my Soulo, I sometimes use a grass bundle to raise the outer tent slightly at the bottom in the wind direction, at 2 sides. Or my water bottles. Anything non-abrasive. And to be honest, 2/3 minutes of me wiping condensation in the morning, isn't the 'utter hell' as some might imagine. My 2 cents.
There might be cheaper tents out there but I couldn't find one that was better for what I needed and believe me I looked 😄 I will still be using my other shelters over the winter but when the weather is really bad I'll be taking the Soulo with me, if only for the peace of mind.
When I looked at tents for the first time, i was overwhelmed with choices. Every tent I looked at had drawbacks or negative feedback from users. All the while, the Hilleberg name kept appearing, with prices that made me wince! So I kept looking. It was amusing when I came back to the tents I thought I could not afford. The more I researched, the more I wanted one! Family company, hand made, almost peerless quality, and with the black labels, pretty much bomb proof! I went with a Nammatj 2 as I find small spaces too claustrophobic. I'm disabled in one arm, and have fibromyalgia too. For me, failure isn't an option. Yes, it's heavy, but wow, what piece of kit. It got utterly hammered in storms whilst wild camping on the west coast of Ireland for 27 days(my first ever wild camp) this year. I love it despite the weight. @@RamblingOnI think it was MCM outdoors some time back. I say rip, it kind of got pole damage if I remember correctly. It was a while back.
And what so often turns out to be the "Emperor's new Clothes."
Anyway, sorry to harp on about "gear porn," it was a great post, beautifully shot, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad you filmed it!
Love the tiny comedy moment, when you missed your cup, and poured boiling water all over your new ground sheet. Then really casually, mopped it up with a tissue..whilst talking to the camera, so we wouldn't notice!😉
I'm only teasing you Jason!
Love the Trangia,Ive the 27.25 and just bought the Mini, but yet to try that one
@@RamblingOn
@r13gbs I've almost bought one of those setups on more than one occasion 😄 The mini looks cool too. Someday, I'll pick one up. Hopefully you can get to try it out soon
The job that tent. Don’t know about that Barry’s tea though, Lyon’s all the way.
😄 once there is tea in my hand I'm happy
Nice one Jason.
Looked a great spot mate.
That is the epic tent 👌👏👏 looks spot on hope you get on with it 👍👍.
Loving the Abisko 😃 if you get fed up with the Soulo you know where I am 😃😄🤣🤣
Take care
Cheers Graham

Enjoy Jason looks great love the colour 👍👍
Nice camp out.
Cheers Mark 🍀
U do some great camping bro fair play 💪💯🇮🇪u should do a true hike
Cheers Luke. I don't have the time but I might manage a few multi day trips, that would be class 🍀
All your missing is a fishing rod 😊
I'm considering giving that a go 🫣🤣
No fishing?
I'd be quietly smiling to myself, whilst the weather did its worse 😊.
No fishing, there was fish in that lake which is mad with it being so isolated. How that is even possible I'll never know 😄
@@RamblingOn birds drop the fish in..its like a farm...🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@@RamblingOn are you allowed to fish the lochs?
@@jasonpip5417 no idea you'd have to ask google 😄😄
Is not called 'the fortress' for nothing :)
If you winter canp in the lakes the Soulo is a good choice, I have the BL version and I wouldnt trust anything else especially these days.
I'll be winter camping in a few areas in Ireland. I'd love to get over to see the Lake district. The black label looks class 🙌
Hilleberg's look sexy af in sand brown! 😍
Yeah boi, they look class 🍀
