- From cult victim to advocate, Briell Decker re-wrote the story of her life. She grew up in a Fundamentalist Mormon sect (FLDS) in a family with 14 children and two mothers. She became the 65th wife of the prophet Warren Jeffs. After years of abuse and torment from Jeffs and his followers, Briell escaped by climbing out of a window and running barefoot to safety. Briell inspires everyone that truly anything is possible in life. She created hope and refuge for other women and children leaving the FLDS. Briell Decker grew up in a Fundamentalist Mormon sect (FLDS) in a family with 14 children and two mothers. At age 18, she became the 65th wife of the prophet Warren Jeffs. After years of abuse and torment from Jeffs and his followers, Briell escaped by climbing out of a window and running barefoot to safety. Briell was hidden by other FLDS apostates and started her process of recovery. She applied for and was granted Warren Jeffs 28,000 SF home in Colorado City, AZ where she once lived as a wife. Partnering with the Phoenix Dream Center, that home has now been remodeled and restored to serve as a place of hope and refuge for other women and children leaving the FLDS. Briell has dramatically rewritten her script from cult victim to advocate and now a peer counselor at the Short Creek Dream Center. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I can really sense how much fear you are fighting in this talk Briell. That fear comes from the sense of shame that was instilled in you at a very young age. Keep reaching out to people who demonstrate to you that you can trust in them, people who listen and take the time to understand just how challenging this is for you. I am so impressed by how you have repeatedly taken a stand to escape from this abusive environment. Bless you. Stay strong. You can do this. Xxx
So powerful. “You don’t have to live the life that other people have planned for you.” You do amazing work. Thank you so much for continuing to give talks on your story, and spreading awareness about the Dream Center you have built, and the importance of helping folks leave abusive groups like the FLDS!
This is an amazing story. We are all so proud of you and what you have accomplished!
That is a true survivor right there. This woman shows how strong and resilient humankind can be
Thank you for sharing your story my friend. You deserve all the good things in life. Much love to you.
This is amazing! I'm so proud to know you Briell! You've helped change so many people's lives for the better. Thank you for everything you've done and continue to do.
Such an inspiring woman. Thank you for sharing your story!
I am so thankful to God that you Briell had the courage and determination to escape and now to help others who have also and still need to. I am relieved for all of you. Thank you for your work. What a gift you are. May God continue to bless you greatly.
What you describe about this man repeatedly removing children from their caregivers is classic work of a psychopathic narcissist; to prevent any deeper sense of trust with another human being which then makes it so much easier for him to control these children himself. You are not wrong in speaking out about this. In fact you are doing exactly the right thing. Just remember that you are deeply hurt by this betrayal too, and that you can only do so much. You have to put yourself first and take care of your own wellbeing. Only then will you have the strength and confidence to help others. Take care of yourself always first and foremost. You deserve it. Xxx
Wow! Such a powerful talk!
She is an amazing person ❤❤❤
Why can't these people be PROSECUTED? ugh my GOD!
Why did your brother put screws in the window pane? If he intended to keep you in solitary confinement wouldn't he need to put the screws through the window frame?
