    Brilliant! I’ve been petrified of water and would not go near it, until recently when I decided that before I turn 50 (yaiks) I HAD to learn to surf (yeah yeah, I know, normal people would learn to swim properly first) . So I paid NZ$50 for a group ‘lesson’ where the 17 year old ‘instructor’ said “there’s a board, see you later”. To my question :‘how do I get up?’ he said “any way you like”. Ofcourse I didn’t and felt quite ripped off. So then I decided to learn by watching others. Bought an 8ft board, asked every one I know and don’t know (yes, I’m desperate) to be my surf buddy and they all said “I’m scared of sharks”. Finally, last week my windsurf instructor (yes, learning that as well) took me straight out the back at Muriwai Beach New Zealand (he doesn’t muck about with white water) where I learnt how to get over big waves. If I didn’t have my wetsuit on I would have wet myself. Bruised certain bits when I came crashing down on the other side of the wave, but hey, I was still ON my board! Even managed to stand up a few times and nose dived on the bigger waves which scared me a bit. Thought I was too far forward on the board. After watching this it all makes sense! When I win Lotto I’ll be on the 1st plane to your surf school! And now….. I shall watch the rest of your videos. I might be a pro by the time I'm 80, haha!

      me too! Same age..looking forward to this year. Took me a week to finally get on my feet and feel reasonably confident of catching more waves than I missed. It wasnt pretty, I'm sure, but sure felt good :-)

      +Jacky Black That is awful. You were ripped off. In Oz, quite a lot of time is spent on the beach teaching (groups) basically where to lay, where to position hands to push up and swing your legs under on a "soft top" beginners board BEFORE even entering the water so you get a feel of the actual board.
      Please NAME and SHAME so others can avoid them.

    These videos are pure genius. All that it takes is one of these videos and you have just saved yourself 6 months of doing the same extremely basic mistake without progress. After watching these videos, and recalling what he has said while on a wave, it's almost like a feeling of enlightenment where you make a massive leap in technique just from correcting a very basic mistake which you have struggled with for months. Awesome instructor!

    I've been struggling with riding unbroken waves for the past few months (a lot of hanging out just past the break). After talking to surfers and watching countless videos (refused to pay for lessons in Waikiki) this video was hands down the best I've seen. Everything you explained about our instincts leading us astray in surfing is exactly what I've been doing wrong. This was the first video that I found which broke down exactly how to catch unbroken waves! Hopefully I can turn it into some rides!

    This is so good, I am an intermediate and happy surfing the gentle waves, but being held back from steeper waves as I am doing exactly the opposite to what I should be doing. Can't wait to try this out, further forward, faster paddles and hands further back. I look across the wave and just above half way up it and slightly angle board so hopefully this will help. Thank you :)

  • @RobManser77
    @RobManser77 6 лет назад

    As usual the best surfing video on the web about this topic of surfing 👍🏻
    One point though: the reason a speed boat rears its front up when going fast (analogy ~5mins in) is that the motive force is below and behind its longitudinal roll centre and there's therefore a turning moment. This is the same as a motorbike pulling a wheelie or a car lifting its front under acceleration. So it can't be paddling faster that causes the board to level out, because even though the arms are down low, they're in front of the sweet spot on the board, not behind it, plus human paddling is so weak and the force applied so close to the sweet spot that the paddler would never affect the board's attitude.

    • @RobManser77
      @RobManser77 6 лет назад

      I should say that I don't know the answer to this as I'm a novice surfer, but I have a background in Physics, thus the comment 👍🏻
      Keep up the good work - you are light years ahead of anyone else in explaining stuff clearly and methodically.

    • @RobManser77
      @RobManser77 6 лет назад

      The only guess I can make is that paddling lifts the nose up because of the angle you're applying force to the water - I guess that it's a downward force on average.

    • @RobManser77
      @RobManser77 6 лет назад +1

      Ok, so I've just learnt why this happens. If you don't paddle fast enough, the waves catches you up and lifts the tail, therefore sinks the nose.
