  • The Surf Simply podcast is also available on iTunes. There are two kinds of surfers, the hunters and the hunted and Spot X is what you're hunting. It's about paddling to the wave rather than just taking waves that come to you. It means you'll have a greater success rate when you try to catch waves and you'll always have priority on a busy day. It takes awareness and agility in the water but it's a skill you can practice right from the first day you paddle out the back.

    A lot of people can surf well but I would say not many people can both teach and surf well. Surf Simply is one of the best by far.

    Late to the party but these tutorials are amazing... I went out this morning and only caught 3 waves and came home disappointed and dejected - watched your videos, went back out this evening and caught loads of waves by not rushing it, just biding my time and 'hunting' spot X... brilliant stuff guys! Thanks

    So well explained, thank you so much for these videos! I'm at a beach break where the peak changes frequently. I'm trying to understand the tides so can better estimate the effect of the sand below. I've also noticed patterns in the sets here, like when the first bigger wave comes through, there's usually another 2 bigger ones behind it, so holding off on the first can pay off sometimes.

    great channel, have learnt alot and really enjoy white board Wednesday. can you look to do one on improving padding technique and exercises to help you to become a stronger (less tied) more efficient paddler.

    You also need a lot of paddling endurance to do this. Great lesson though, I realize I'm always the hunted.

    You described it perfectly! When I first started, I was too often in the crush zone and got caught up in some bad stuff. Then I become "the hunted" and stayed way too far outside and trying to stay out of the way.
    You are correct, it is all about attitude. Hesitating is actually more dangerous than going for it (in most cases)
    You are a great surf coach, any chance you'll be in southern California anytime soon? :-)

      +Kurt Stock so true! I do the same thing still, sitting on the outside so I don't get in the way of the other surfers, but it's way more difficult to learn and more dangerous to catch a wave on the outside. Good points.

    A question: there´s a beach I always wanted to surf, there are three basic pointbreaks 1. a right hand near the pier, 2. a peak that goes both ways and 3. a left hand. Thing is it is kind a messy because although there are this 3 clear places where the waves break they are constantly moving making it difficult to know where to be exactly to catch them. Any pointers on the matter?

    • @patriciaWmonteiro
      @patriciaWmonteiro 10 лет назад +2

      That's because it is most likely a beach break. You have to move around and follow the peak while in reef breaks it's stationary. In beach waves the sand keeps moving around bellow you changing the 'spot x'.
