    Be very careful with the edges of these screens. Very easy to chip and crack. Be very careful removing the display and super careful applying pressure around the edges (though this is necessary to lock the adhesive in place). I have replaced hundreds of these screens, and broken two. My mistakes are your warning.

    Thank you!!! Worked perfectly!!!!! Note on the top two pieces, they overlap a bit which doesn’t give them a flush mount, but once you put the glass back on it pushes everything down anyway

    Do notice how at the end the display is leaning back? These strips are much thinner than the original and lead the to display falling off if you are someone who needs to lean their display forward.

    As long as your screen is tilted back for the rest of its life, these strips are fine. However, none of the strips I've received from any supplier are as thick as the originals. This means no matter how clean the strip locations are before reattaching, the screen never reseals properly with these shaped pieces. Eventually, if your screen is frequently tilted forward (like for studio use!), it's going to fall off. I've been adding a conformal silicon fluid at the top of the screen as a backup. That seems to prevent disaster when using strips like these iFixit ones.
    If anyone knows of shaped strips at least 0.5mm thick, let me know. These ones from iFixit and other suppliers are 0.1mm foam - far far far too thin to be reliable.

    Thanks iFix it for another fantastic video. Although this is such a poor design by Apple. I get it people want a thin device, but surely they could of used a locking mechanism similar to the iPhone 6 to do this, with a couple of hidden screws at the rear or bottom of the device. I can only think they used adhesive as it’s more profitable for them when some people would rather purchase a new device than repair.

    GREAT VIDEO. but you don't show when to remove the white paper off of the tape before lowering the glass down. that's the hardest part

      Andy, This is super important. I used cotton ball dampened in nail polish remover as it dries super fast. I am always worried about adhesion.

    good guide. worked like a charm. so what if you need to slice the adhesive and reapply. how often does anybody need to do that? would you rather run windows?

    Just wanted to say thank you for the video! I've signed the petition and am about to order the spudger and adhesive strip kit. Apple wants $500 or more to replace the screen on my 21.5", which my newest rescue knocked to the floor (not her fault--it was mine for forgetting to move it to the side). Your prices are very reasonable. Finding a screen that's affordable is another matter, but I'm looking into it.

    One other important note from this observer: when & where applicable, remember to connect the temp sensor before the final assembly & sealing takes place, during the connections steps just mentioned during the final assembly. Just another careful step, but apparently an important one. Great video, step by step, clear & concise, Thank you!

    I'm going to open my iMac 5K (2017) in order to install an NVMe SSD instead of the Fusion Drive, and I have read many negative reviews, written by people who bought the adhesive tape on amazon (for example) and after a while the screen came off and fell, breaking.
    Please, let me know your opinion.
    Thank you

    Do you guys sell a new or used screen display for the 27? It is the late 2012 which requires the whole display IMac 2546. which I foolishly purchased used by a refurb fellow in Houston he use a couple of pieces of double edged tape similar to your product but about 4 inches on a couple of sides. Put it on my wifes desk and she put an incadesent light over it with the screen tilted downward, tape heated up and it is cracked now after it fell completely out. Hoping the cable connections are not damaged they all look straight under magnification. will hook it up to check to see if it works first. I think the $500 price tag for a display may be good money after bad. Just put it towards a new I Pad with keyboard in the next couple of months as the new ones with the IOS/Pad software come out and hope apple lowers price on existing I Pad. ?????? I was going to install the cracked one and just live with it. I can adapt to lots of things as I retired and have to slow down spending money like a mad man. Using an old Asus with 8.0 software which does not lend itself to 10 upgrade very well. Blocked Windows from trying to upgrade it on boot and have to revert back after about 15 minutes of gyrations and auto roll back at the end. The asus 15 is touch screen but you have the misery of Mr. Bill's goofy apple wannabe. Thank you, great videos by the way you are a pro for certain with the concise youtube techniques. Quick and to the point. Great job. In Houston and you would think I would learn by my mistakes with all the folks after your cash and you dont see behind the curtains. Would have been cheaper just to purchase an IMac air.
    Mike

    can i test the device without attaching the screen
    would the device turn on without the screen

    • @umulig
      @umulig 4 года назад

      Yes it would. Though you might have the fan spin 100% because of the missing temp sensor insinde the screen itself. I usually test the computer by gently leaning the display on the computer, and connecting the cables. I can use the computer for days like this, checking that everything works as expected, before reassembly.

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 9 лет назад

      Do you have the thin one like in this video?
      The old thicker aluminium imacs had their screens attached with magnets but were a bit prone to getting dust between the glass and the display panel.
      These ones have the glass attached to the screen.

    • @iannamico
      @iannamico 8 лет назад

      i have a 2009 27 inch that has been running non-stop for years. I never had the dust issue on the screen. But I did have that issue on a 21 inch mid 2010 model. Just pop the screen cover off and use a small micro fiber towel to remove the dirt. The small kind that they give you to clean your eye glasses. Worked perfectly and took 5 minutes to clean and have it perfect again.

    Just did this to replace hard drive and now screen has black line vertically about an inch to te right of camera. Did I just toast my display?

    • @yoshinobukawahara274
      @yoshinobukawahara274 7 лет назад +2

      a bit late reply - but yes your display is now damaged - probably the TAB connection - A TAB Fault is caused by a connection failure from the TAB that connects the transparent electrode layers to the video driver board of an LCD.
      TAB stands for Tape Automated Bonding, which is one of several methods employed in the LCD display manufacturing process to electrically connect hundreds of signal paths going to the rows and columns of electrodes in layer 6 (the transparent electrode layer) in the LCD display to the video ICs on the driver board that drive these electrodes.
      If an LCD display is subjected to extreme heat or cold or physical shock, this could cause one or more TAB connections to fail inside the display. This failure requires replacement of the LCD display module itself. If these connections were to fail, the effect would be that an entire row or column of pixels would fail to activate. In the examples below, a horizontal or vertical black line would appear on the display, while the rest of the display would appear normal. The horizontal failure runs from edge to edge; the vertical failure runs from top to bottom.

    Just wanted to warn everyone.
    I ordered the adhesive that ifixit sold, followed the instructions to the letter and 3 days later I came home to a smashed LCD on the floor because it didn’t stick.
    Avoid this iFixit adhesive like the plague, it does not work.

      @Bobby Brady Funny, what you suggested is exactly what I did, including leaving the iMac on it's back (although not overnight, but still for a few hours). Yet, 7 months post install, my LCD just fell and smashed yesterday. At least your response is a bit more helpful than OWCs, even after emailing them directly. I seriously think there's a temperature problem and their QC is only testing for short intervals--not to mention the strips were folded in the packaging.

    i have an older imac with screws and magnets and a newer model with glue. upgraded both, had to take each apart.. while not difficult.. working with the screws is a pain in the ass. The glue strips are 1000 times easier to use. Great video.. Buy the way my home iMac is a 2009 that is on 24/7 and still runs with zero issues and is still kinda fast.... Take that PC

    What a shame this is necessary now. Why Apple had to change the design so that the entire LCD display has to be replaced when you crack the glass is beyond me. It's just greed on Apple's part IMO - they make a lot more money charging for replacement displays than letting people easily replace the glass themselves.

      I am computer tech of 15 years. I have worked on windows and apples computers. Always apples computer jobs bite me the arse. I got 2 of the imacs come into my workshop today for SSD upgrade. Nothing but problems.
      I have always thought about saying no to apples, these will be the last 2 Apple computers I ever work on I am sick of the things Apple do to stop people trying to repair them. In Australia Apple won't even supply parts to retail customer or computer shops.
      From now on if people are stupid enough to buy jump on the Apple bandwagon then they can go to Apple and pay Apple prices instead of going around in a panic to computer shops trying to get them fixed cheaper.
