    curious.. what type of adhesive do you put back on the monitor to reseal it?

    Thank you. I was replacing a damaged foot and replacing the plastic washers on the hinge spring (one was broken) with a custom laser cut metal bracket.
    Your video was ideal for the task.

    Those of you worried about taking the screen off, I have a helpful tip. Expose the adhesive to extreme temperatures (hot or cold). I did that back in February when I transported my iMac in very cold weather. When I got to my destination, the screen was actually about to fall off the frame. Normally, I would be worried about this, but since I am planning a logic board repair/replacement, I found this to be a happy accident. So, leave your iMac out in the cold/heat for like 10 minutes or so and you'll find the glue much easier to deal with.

      They made the conscious decision to use glue instead of a latching, locking or screw mechanism :p

    Fantastically helpful when I replaced my iMac's power supply. The old one started to make a strange rattling noise, which I at first attributed to the hard drive, but once the case was open, it was clear the noise came from the power supply.

      My iMac's power supply went too, no warning. Fortunately my home insurance bought the story of a 'power surge' so I was reimbursed, about 3x what it cost.. I didn't complain and used the cash to upgrade to a 16" MBP. But I still need the HD in the iMac as it has irreplaceable (and not backed-up) data, mainly photos.

    Good tutorial! I just upgraded my 27" iMac with an SSD. Only problem was to completely remove all of the old double adhesive tape and glue from the iMac enclosure, you really need some special solvent for that glue residue.

    • @techhousegaming

      what's the special solvent for removing the residue?

      @kjamison5951 2 года назад

      Isopropanol AKA Isopropyl Alcohol is sufficient. Use q-tips and work a little area at a time. Be patient, I was replacing the broken hinge washers and replacing a damaged foot and cleaning off the adhesive took the longest.

    I followed these instructions but I was not careful enough when removing the screen. The glass cracked with a very slight twist of the plectrum. Be very careful! The glass cannot be replaced separately. When I reassembled the iMac it wouldnt turn on. Zilch!

    Has anyone tried to swap the stand and hinge on the 27 inch late 2013 iMac with a removable one from previous generation iMac?

    • @duvasrealm
      @duvasrealm 4 года назад

      Was thinking on the same stuff, if we disassemble and convert the hinge to the VESA or the removable version in any way. Haven't seen anywhere people giving thought on that. I might be wrong but I think there might be a simpler fix for this.

  • @nickitis

    If you push in that guitar pick slightly too far you will ruin your display like I did - permanent green line down center of screen - prohibitively expensive to replace screen. You should use the special tool Apple provide which is like a mini pizza cutter.

    How would i take out the power button? I believe my wire was severed during disassembly and needs to fix/replace it

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 лет назад

      Its not easy. Its glued in place on the casing. You have to press pretty hard on it to push it through, possibly while prying on the inside a little. When it is removed, its hard to get it to go back in place like it was before and stay there.

  • @petelens9114

    BE VERY CAREFUL! I used a triangular pick like the one shown to break the glue and permenantly damaged the screen backlight. Don't push it in further than 1 cm.

      I just did that today when you remove the left speaker while looking at it left side, get yourself some kind of metal spud like to open up iPhones put a little bit of alcohol on the edges and keep wiggling twisting getting in there and it’ll pop off

      The hard drive in an iMac is always behind the display. Once the display is off if should be pretty obvious where the drive is.

      For others - heat edge of glass, use scalpel to cut into fixing tape no more than 5mm all way round then use credit card to push remaining tape. NEVER TWIST. be patient.
