    An underrated iMac. 2009 was probably Apple's finest year in design.

    • @theblah12
      @theblah12 4 года назад +20

      The last few years of mac design where Apple was still holding onto the idea of usability was fantastic - Great upgradable iMacs, upgradable Macbooks with decent ports, a Mac Pro that was both not a trash can and actually relatively affordable even for the average user - even the Mac Mini was upgradable to a certain extent. The fact that so many people are still using these is as testament to how important upgradabilty is, but I guess that's why Apple suddenly turned against the idea - they want you keep buying new hardware, even if the old would still be fine if it had a bit more RAM and such.

    • @djdjukic
      @djdjukic 4 года назад

      @@monum I'm partial to the iPhone 3GS so 2009 came to mind... But yeah, the physical designs came out in 2003 (Power Mac->Mac Pro), 2007 (iMac), 2008 (MacBook Pro and iPhone), and Snow Leopard which came out that year had the same exact UI as Leopard from 2007. So, I guess 2007 would be more of a sweet spot for looks, 2008 or 2009 for hardware. Already in late 2009 we had the glass-to-the-edge iMac, which kinda doesn't do it for me.

    Well done cleaning and restoring the 20" Early 2009 iMac!
    I have a 24" Early 2008 iMac which is STILL my main computer after 11 years. Over its lifetime I've maxed the RAM from a paltry 2G to 6GB and swapped the 500GB HDD for a 240GB SanDisk SSD. Earlier in the year the ATI Radeon 2600 Pro 256MB GPU died. Fortunately I sourced the exact same model iMac (the top end model, mine's the next one down) on Gumtree 20 minutes away, dead HDD and bad cosmetics selling for parts. I first disassembled my iMac and gave everything a good clean. Then I swapped out the entire logic board with its 2.8GHz C2D CPU to the top-of-the-line 3.06GHz, swapped the dead GPU with the top end NVIDIA GeForce 8800GS 512MB and swapped the LCD display too, which was in great shape. I now practically have a new iMac!
    That said, it's showing its age. It's stuck on El Capitan, Safari runs slow although 1080/60 RUclips videos plays smoothly. Chrome is a little slow if multiple tabs are open. Google maps in Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari is a slideshow, although the Google Earth app and built-in Maps app works absolutely fine. CSGO used to play well a few years back but now it's a slideshow. Outside of those situations the computer works great. I will be using it for the next year or two but I do anticipate finally getting a new iMac.

      Only the US uses Fahrenheit, and even then, a lot of our science and industry types use the metric system. NASA is all-metric now, to the best of my knowledge. Computer core temperatures are almost always expressed in Celcius, even in the U.S.
      All of the US scales (Fahrenheit, miles, etc.) are defined based on metric scales, and no longer based on the old definitions (although very, very close to the old values).
      So the entire world is pretty much metric, only the U.S. has a facade of using an imperial scale (which is actually defined by metric units)

      Australia went to fully metric measures in 1973, having switched to decimal currency in 1966. However imperial measurements are still used for marketing purposes with Tyres (like the rest of the world, Michelin TRX metric sizes never caught on). In the days of CRTs, they were all sold in centimetres, but since flatscreen technologies have reverted to being marketed in inches. Apparently the smaller numbers inches are expressed in are easier for consumers to remember, which was a reason given for the failure of Michelin TRX Tyres as well. A 16” tyre is easier to remember than a 390mm tyre

    i also live in australia, i have just picked up a 2010 iMac 21.5 and would like to pop a SSD into it.

    I might be crazy but isnt “grounding” yourself to the very board you’re working on utterly useless?

    • @dylanhopkins3640
      @dylanhopkins3640 4 года назад +8

      No, it equalises the charge between you and the board preventing any sudden discharges, same way you ground yourself to the case when you build a pc.

    • @unlokia
      @unlokia 4 года назад

      Yes. Ground *means GROUND* aka "mains earth" here in the UK.

    • @Lego4KilIer
      @Lego4KilIer 4 года назад +1

      @@dylanhopkins3640 in case of a pc case (punny...) you would ground yourself to the psu, not just the case

    • @justgivemethetruth
      @justgivemethetruth 4 года назад +3

      If you touch a local ground and discharge any static you have, you can then safely touch the chassis and ground to it. No problem.

    • @gp3328
      @gp3328 3 года назад

      Honestly the chance of static discharge is the chance of being hit by a lightning bolt and run over by a car in an underground bunker.

    I have a late 2009 27" iMac and after two failed HDDs (one under warranty, the other not), I bought a 1TB SSD and had it installed. Love it and after 11 years it's still going strong. I reckon I will have it for the rest of my life. I'd like to change out the screen though because there are some faint vertical lines on it that you can see only on a dark screen. But they are so faint it doesn't bother me that much. I don't know why people say these only last a few years. They can last forever with only a few parts changed and mine is proof.
