+R32R38... I shot through a cast iron skillet years ago with a Ruger 10/22...I think it was a CCI 40gr Mini-Mag. Went right through it at 20-25 yards. Now, maybe my skillet was thinner than 22plinkster's? I don't know.
The metallurgical properties of cast iron make it strong, but brittle. It's worth considering how much the lower power .22s weakened the cast iron in spots. I would like to see the magnum hit a skillet that had not been fired at previously.
The velocities cited on the CCI package are for rifle barrels of at least 18 inches. Out of a 4 to 6 inch barrel the velocity is substantially less, and the amount of energy is at least 40% less.
For small cartridges I've been shooting .22 LR since I was like 7 years old up until a few years ago. Got me a .22 mag, and have been using that ever since. So much better than a .22 LR. The .22 LR just has been sitting in the corner of the closet other than my youngest son has now started shooting it recently.
I have an old cast iron skillet passed Down from my great grandmother . it's well over 100yrs old and I don't think no stanger.will go through it. New cast iron pans are too thin and brittle. I actually have 4 cast iron skillet but I won't be shooting them. That's what I cook my cornbread in.
The one he used was extremely bad. You might just as well use an aluminum pan when the cast iron is that thin. It must be thick and heavy for a uniform heat transfer.
Some years back I had a similar thought. Using a heavy aluminum fry pan at 20 yds I shot Remington Thunderbolts from my Rossi 62 SAC rimfire with a 16.5" barrel. Thought it'd make a good gong. After ten shots and hearing nothing I thought, I couldn't have missed ten times. Walking up and checking there were ten holes right through the pan. Cover and concealment, there IS a difference. My favorite targets are golf balls at 50+ yds with a scoped .22 (Ruger 10/22, Marlin Papoose and model 20). Under 20 yds I use my Ruger KNR-5. Good interesting video. Fun too!
The problem isn't that the metal is too thin, it is that the metal is brittle. Forge smarter not denser. And get that mono layer shit away from me. High hardness and thickness with a single layer is what ceramic is for.
Bought a GSG 1911 in .22lr. That thing would not reliably cycle anything but CCI mini mag/stingers. Watched a RUclips vid about polishing the slide and frame rails and now it cycles almost all .22lr just fine. Your videos are great!
This was great! I would not have even thought a 9mm would penetrate that cast iron! Although I wonder if scrambled eggs might not burn through that particular skillet. 😂 I’d love to see this from three feet and six feet and with the LCR .22 WMR. Those 5/6 inch barrels are cool but definitely not CCW likely.
I just made some 22lr targets with old spade heads I had laying around. Wish I could post a picture here. Works just fine. Steel is hardened and the rounds don't even make a dent.
I can’t believe how y’all pronounced Googly Moogly. Where y’all from? Just making fun of ole ElmerFuddGun. LOL. Love your videos, your upbeat personality, and your accent. Keep up the good work!
Great vid but your revolver slows for a lot of escaping combustion as opposed to a pistol with a blowback system. I’d like to see if the 22 out of a pistol or rifle penetrates.
Another great video .22 Plinkster, Just thinking - how would those same calibres go up against a kevlar vest.? Could you give us a demonstration , possibly using even higher calibres than the ones you used on the skillet? Question: What do you call a bad Guy with a 500 S&W??? Answer: SIR!!!!
No... not joking at all. You can get a very good look at the thickness of the pan at the 3:30 mark and the 4:27 mark. And at the 5:01 mark you can clearly see that the pan actually deformed slightly. The cast iron pans these days are not as thick as pans made 50 years ago.

I wonder if a high velocity 40gr .22LR would make the difference? As far as I know, the Aquila Interceptor @ 1,470 FPS is the fastest 40gr cartridge made. And to boot, it's a solid. Also, the CCI Velocitor, while being a 40gr hollow-point, is cooking at 1435 FPS. Maybe it would have a chance, too?
I did this with a 10" and an 8" skillet that I got from garage sales. At 25 yards a standard CCI minimag had no problem shattering the metal. I did use a Remington 22 rifle tho.
On the amazon page for this skillet there is a question asking if this skillet protects against firearms. I answered that question by posting the link to this video. No copyright infringement was intended or inferred. Now having said that, this is not a good test, because the Utopia Kitchen skillet is cheap metal made in China.
