As an author and consultant in the field of penetration mechanics, I am pleased to see that 22plinkster is the latest to document the issues that plague the use of the Clear Ballistics Gel product. There are only two factors that produce the dynamic pressure that initiates and drives projectile expansion in a terminal ballistic test medium. They are 1.) projectile velocity and 2.) density of the test medium. If the density of the test medium is not close to that of human soft tissues (1.040 ± 0.020 g/cc), then there is no way that the test medium can accurately reproduce the expansion and resultant penetration depth of a test bullet. The density of human skeletal muscle tissue is 1.057 g/cc. The density of human adipose tissue (aka: 'fat') is 0.945 g/cc The density of properly prepared and calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin at 39°F is 1.037 - 1.043 g/cc. The density of water is 0.9982 g/cc at STP. The density of Clear Ballistics Gel is 0.824 g/cc. The Clear Ballistics Gel product is between 13% and 22% less dense than human soft tissues. This is why Clear Ballistics Gel produces less dynamic pressure to initiate and drive projectile expansion. Clear Ballistics Gel produces less expansion and greater penetration than what occurs in any human soft tissue or either of the two valid accepted soft tissue simulants: 10% ordnance gelatin and water. The take-away? Clear Ballistics Gel is an inferior test medium which is incapable of producing test data that is representative of any human soft tissue or either of the two accepted human soft tissue test mediums. Nicely done, 22plinkster!

This is an absolutely great example of the difference between these two types of gel. Most people these days use the easy clear ballistics gel and lot of the time they don’t get very impressive results from bullets that are known to work well and this is exactly why. Very few people understand this, including the people doing all the ballistic gel tests.
This was a great video! I appreciate you educating us on the different types of ballistic gelatin on the market and how and why each is used. Very informative and also entertaining to watch! That combo is often hard to come by!
Great video Plinkster. I guess many of us just really miss Paul already. Gelatin is good, but there's something about Paul's meat target that just feels realistic. Maybe Roy will give the meat target a try with CCI Uppercut ammo. Thank you. R, Steve
@@OntarioBearHunter your reply indicates you have a very poor understanding of this subject. The FBI spec ordnance gel replicates muscle tissue very well, almost exactly one to one. I thought your explanation in the first video was perfectly clear and understandable. I didn't realize the difference between the two gels. It makes sense. The clear gel does make great videos.
You can also stack the deck in your favor a little more by pre-filling the hollow point with Crisco and removing the air pocket. The hydrostatic shock will be more uniform and expand sooner. This works to improve the terminal performance of virtually all HP ammo, especially subsonic HP which tends to have iffy expansion.

But you didn't, becauseit didn't matter. On a positive note, we see you finally learned how to properly operate a G44... Good job!
Dude, quit with the ignorance. Clear Ballistics Gel has NEVER been a real gel used by anyone other than lazy gun channels who used it to get popular instead of working hard to make real gel. Clear Gel has no credibility anywhere. Clear Ballistics was just great at marketing by sending tons of free blocks to channels. That's all. It's a synthetic substance that does not approximate real tissue. It's only attribute is being clear to see things. That's it.
Tools and Targets tested both side by side iirc. The Punch is more consistent, doesn't expand, and actually works fabulously in 16-inch barrels cause it crushes and flattens from the velocity. From what I remember the uppercut didn't like short barrel pistols very much. it can have inconsistent penetration or expansion.

The irony is this ammunition still does not meet the minimum standard for FBI penetration: 12-18". I do respect the effort CCI put into this ammo though.
Correct. Nor is it intended to meet that standard. It is at the end of the day a .22lr round. BUT, for someone who simply can not handle a service round do to many factors, this is what they CAN use for self defense. It beats a sharp stick and bad language.

22lr works for self defense. Thousands upon thousands of shootings have proven this. "Working" means breaking contact or saving your life. Government entities like the FBI and state cops use their weapons OFFENSIVELY. Therefore I take all these gel tests with a grain of salt.
Until I watched these two videos, I never thought a 22 hollow point would expand out of a short barreled pistol! Also sheds new light on all of the clear ballistic gel videos on RUclips. Thanks Dave Nash, or whoever you are!😄
Recent subscriber. Really like this video and your logical, scientific approach. Thanks for posting it. Had crossed these off my list after seeing some of those “other” videos. Will now go get some of these for my P322.
No gel "minics human flesh". Thats not how these tests work. The gel is used to get a consistent medium for testing between rounds. Its got nothing to do with which is "most like flesh". Also, how about Buffalo outdoors who wasnt getting expansion in water? The only way this round gets expansion is from a rifle length barrel, and even then its moving about as fast as regular old 36 gr.
Great observation. He also repeatedly said that over penetration always occurs in the clear gel. He could have shot the clear gel with the BB to back this statement, but he didn't because it doesn't matter. This ammo is clearly weak on both accounts. With this small of a round, penetration is more critical for effectiveness. This video appears to be a paid for, scripted, sales, and marketing correction, designed to make logical sounding excuses to cover an obvious flaw in this overpriced, over hyped product.
@@clutchcargo1239 What you’re suggesting would be pretty fucking stupid considering you can see the penetration with your eyes. But he did.
@@clutchcargo1239 your comment is stupid and not based on facts. Using 22lr for self defense isn't ideal, but if you're going to then using a bullet that expands reliably will improve the performance. This does that on human-like targets. I am CCI stinger fan through and through but I feel in this instance CCI tried to rip the federal punch 22 ammo with their uppercut ammo. Federal punch > Uppercut in my experience.
@22plinskter I think everyones reasonable skepticism revolves around the fact that no other hollow points are this finicky. I definitely agree, clear ballistics gel isn’t great, but we aren’t seeing this level of inconsistency between performance - between gels - in any other hollow points.
So penetration about the same but will only expand in 10% gel. The actual question is will it expand in the intended target... Bodies. Guess it needs tested on the meat target. If it only expands in FBI gel then it is pointless.
I seen videos of it not opening up in a barrel of WATER. All JHP should open in water. I’ve seen very few rounds not open in water and the Uppercut was one of them.
@@razormonkey5000 Was not about calibration homie. Was to see the difference in the penetration, between the 2 gels. Think before you make stupid reply's.
If you can't hit what you're aiming at, a self-defense round is useless. Instead of buying fancy ammo, shot placement is the skill you should be acquiring. Personally, I prefer shooting Winchester Hyper Velocity. It is a 40g hollow point 1435 fps round. I shoot this round out of a Buckmark Contour 7¼ barrel and several single-shot rifles with a 30 inch barrel @400yds. The hyper velocity round has greater stability and is copper plated. I also like the M-22 @1255 fps for plinking and target practice. Self-defense is ALL about shot placement, NOT the ammo. Fancy ammo will never make you a better shot.
This is all very interesting but there is another camp which thinks .22 LR for defensive use should be solid RNL for max penetration rather than expand and under penetrate.
@22plinkster this is true but, it is zero percent ballistics gel. In the past I have seen almost all hollowpoints expand in water even when they wouldn't in gel. To be fair though, those were centerfire rounds 9mm, 40, 38, etc. The fact that the hole in bigger caliber hollowpoints is well, bigger might be at play in 100% expansion in water.

I'm really glad you did this video. Too many people out there testing incorrectly and spreading incorrect information about the round.
Great video Plinkster. I guess many of us just really miss Paul already. Gelatin is good, but there's something about Paul's meat target that just feels realistic. Maybe Roy will give the meat target a try with CCI Uppercut ammo. Thank you. R, Steve
It might feel realistic, but it's not. Feelings mean nothing.
@@chuckhaggard1584 Welllll, if you use a really realistic target expect to live the rest of your life in prison.
@chuckhaggard1584 the FBI gel isn't either and noone bothers to read what the medium and results were meant to achieve...
@@OntarioBearHunter your reply indicates you have a very poor understanding of this subject.
The FBI spec ordnance gel replicates muscle tissue very well, almost exactly one to one. It wasn't just invented by some lab geek, or FBI agent, it was developed by very experienced US Army combat surgeons. FBI spec gel is absolutely the most proven wound ballistics test medium, validated by observational data from animal testing, and both surgery and autopsies.
@@chuckhaggard1584 The bubba's think that gel is some kind of sham, when it was proven to correlate to human tissue, in actual field shootings more than 30 years ago, and it keeps on being validated. But it's not as fun as shooting random groceries...
The one thing you "missed" that would have added some interest, is to have also shot the clear ballistic gel with the .177 BB. That way people could see a direct comparison of everything.
In any case, thank you!
Everyone talks about power, but no one talks about accuracy. Power means nothing when you miss.
'Accuracy' meaning consistent load. Often times rounds that are loaded hotter are not as consistent, but you can have both.
appreciate all you do, no worries here, I know your a stand up dude, wish there were more like you
Thank you for this video. I have always had complete confidence in your testing. The uppercuts seem to work very nicely. CCI should put you on their payroll if they haven’t already.
Lol, you think? 😂😂😂
Due to there being so much deception, misinformation and outright lies perpetrated on the internet, skepticism has become the default setting for many people on anything they see online. Kudos to you for taking the time and making the effort to detail the differences in the testing methods and materials used.
Talking about deception...this guy is paid by CCI to make them look good ..come on
Thanks .22 Plinkster, finally someone that knows what they are doing, and I appreciate your test results, I've been subbed to your channel for some time, and gotten some good results from this hectic round, I don't often reply, but I felt like I should on this one, THX 👍 🇺🇸
YT protocol... considering their love of pew pews, they might not appreciate that one. 🤣
I'm glad you did that video cause most of the people are using the clear and I figured it wouldn't give the same results with hollow point ammo.😊
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
We get loads and loads of CCI rimfire here in Australia but never seen this version of 22. Great effort with the video thanks
For the cat hunting market?
You gotta look for the Down Undercut there.
Can't find it here either 🇺🇸???

@jameshealy4594 isint there an overload of cats in your country? Killing all the birds. Aren't the cats hunted because of this? Just what I saw on t.v. I could be wrong. Am I wrong?
Very informational! I knew about gel having to be at a proper temp... I didn't realize that there was a performance difference between "clear" gel and the FBI protocol. Thanks for educating me on the difference.
Man if there is ever any doubt on anything you do with .22lr, it’s just haters trying to find something they don’t like. You sir are well experienced in the art of .22lr ballistic data through your 10+ years of testing and making videos on RUclips. Your findings are plenty enough for me to help make an educated decision. Job well done.
This why your the subject matter expert on anything .22lr and more. Still the best firearms channel!
Definitely a rebuttal video worth making. Thorough and informative.
If these undercuts penetrate more in clear gel, so should the .177 BB. You could have shot the clear gel with the BB gun to prove your words during the calibration check of the fbi gel...
That's it.
You went through a lot of effort to make your point. Very well done. Do not think I would have but this is still an A++ Video.
Could you please compare the upper cut to the Federal punch? I would like to know just how they both compare to FBI standards.
He doesn't work for Federal though

Well, considering the CCI Uppercut was designed for 2.5-4” barrels…there’s not much left behind in that market.

When the competitors perform in both the clear gel *and* "fbi" (knox) gel, then this needs to also. No excuses...
Not really.
Why does it matter how it performs in clear gel? Clear gel wasn't engineered to simulate human tissue. So what useful data can it provide?
Hey Buckeye, maybe you can make excuses for being lazy and trying to get easy popularity for using a known inferior ballistic medium to test self ammo? You and all of the rest of the lazy, narcisstic guntubers who want fame and money without working hard like 22Plinkster, Paul Harrell, TNOutdoors9, etc. Instead, you get free gel blocks from Clear Ballistics and cash in on the clicks. CCI mini mags was my favorite ammo for my bolt action rifle in the late 80s

Yup. I could see my wife and her arthritic hands using this.
@@bonjovi2757 Punch does a lot better and will typically meet the minimum, even if there is no expansion taking place.

Will now go get some of these for my P322.
long explanation, but worth doing, thank you for taking the time to show this.
Thank you this is a great video explaining the differences of the different gels and their purpose.
The only person defending this ammo is a paid employee of the company. Let that sink in.
Thank you, Dave, for a very informative video. Much appreciated. I had no idea that making FBI ballistic gel was as involved as it is ! Thanks again.
So if it only expands in a "perfect" medium, is it really worth it? I want to carry something that will expand reliably in multiple mediums.
This video and demonstration was one of the most clear, concise, and persuasive pieces of evidence that I have seen on the subject.
But isn't this insufficient penetration in both gels to meet FBI standards?
Great observation. He also repeatedly said that over penetration always occurs in the clear gel. He could have shot the clear gel with the BB to back this statement, but he didn't because it doesn't matter. This ammo is clearly weak on both accounts. With this small of a round, penetration is more critical for effectiveness. This video appears to be a paid for, scripted, sales, and marketing correction, designed to make logical sounding excuses to cover an obvious flaw in this overpriced, over hyped product.
Is anyone surprised they can't make a 22lr that performs like a 9mm?
@@clutchcargo1239 What you’re suggesting would be pretty fucking stupid considering you can see the penetration with your eyes. This video is about expansion and why people were not seeing it in clear ballistic gel.
If the intent was to obfuscate the lack of penetration then he wouldn’t have showed it or measured it. But he did.
@doctorgears9358 Lol, you're calling what I said was stupid, when you obviously don't get what my point actually is... Thank you for the laugh! 😉
@@clutchcargo1239 your comment is stupid and not based on facts. Using 22lr for self defense isn't ideal, but if you're going to then using a bullet that expands reliably will improve the performance. This does that on human-like targets. Is it a great self defense round? Not really. Is it one of the best 22lr self defense rounds? Probly.
I am CCI stinger fan through and through but I feel in this instance CCI tried to rip the federal punch 22 ammo with their uppercut ammo. Federal punch > Uppercut in my experience.
Thanks for doing this. I’ve been wondering if all the hype has any basis in fact.
Correct
I would NEVER count on expansion with any round.

I don't believe the FBI for a single second.
And I don't trust them either.
I seen videos of it not opening up in a barrel of WATER. All JHP should open in water. I’ve seen very few rounds not open in water and the Uppercut was one of them.

Thanks for the clarification Mr. Plinkster.
Water jugs and phone book, no expansion.

I'd still say federal punch is much better
Practicality over pretty, a very good decision to make especially when it comes to the effectiveness of a hollow round build for self defense.
Have you tested them out of a rifle yet?
Great job brother... Thanks for all you do for the Pew Pew community. Keep the cause going... from all of us in Auburn Hills, Michigan
One question? What happens when you shoot the clear gel with a bb for penetration?
#Science
It makes a .177" sized hole
Not needed for "calibration" as clear gel is not calibrated to be equivalent to human tissue.
It's already calibrated. He said it doesn't expire. Pay attention homie.
Personally,
I prefer shooting Winchester Hyper Velocity.
Dave is clearly informed and offers a straight forward explanation. Looking forward to the vehemently disagreeing comments.
This is all very interesting but there is another camp which thinks .22 LR for defensive use should be solid RNL for max penetration rather than expand and under penetrate.
Great explanation of ballistic gels and the ammunition. 10/10!
Maybe but, I saw Buffalo Outdoors shoot his into water jugs zero expansion.
The human body is not 100% water 🤷♂️
@22plinkster this is true but, it is zero percent ballistics gel. In the past I have seen almost all hollowpoints expand in water even when they wouldn't in gel. To be fair though, those were centerfire rounds 9mm, 40, 38, etc. The fact that the hole in bigger caliber hollowpoints is well, bigger might be at play in 100% expansion in water.
What an absurd assertion. Knox gelatin is made of collagen. People are made of collagen.
