- As part of the 2008 PickupTrucks.com Half-Ton Shootout, PickupTrucks.com tested six half-ton pickups from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Nissan and Toyota pulling a 6,500-pound trailer up a 7.2 percent grade to find out which truck was the most powerful towing machine when climbing hills. For more information, visit PickupTrucks.com.
the shocks were different and affected the test and thats why they got different results. it had off road shocks on.
a good test is to pull a 30 foot travel trailer. we did that with an 08 f-150 and it pulled perfect
Difference between the Chevy and GMC, the Sierra has rancho shocks, a stiffer suspension compared to the Silverado, they mentioned this in the off-road test, and also noted it on the 1/4 mile drag race, which they stated that due to the shocks they believe the stiffer suspension created a slower track time.
@drewglis that little extra hp is just through the computer. The 5.4 is the most restricted engine in any half-ton, until the 6.2 ford has never tried pumping alot of hp in their trucks. I know for a fact, with a chip and air intake,(my 06 f150 and my bro-in-law 08 5.3) and a dual, that the 5.4 adds more hp. The dyno showed almost 25 more hp and 35 lb ft. Now remember my 06 stock had only 300 to his 315, but i had more stock torque. 5.4 is a torque monster
@bassbuggy101 i know they aren't. i was just saying that of course the hemi isn't going to be great, the hemi wasn't built for towing power. The cummings diesel was. i
Thank you for understanding my point and not trying to argue and disagree with me because it isn't something you wanted to hear.
I think I'd be happy with any of the trucks. There I said it.
What do you think about getting a like 11 years later?
@blawilliams well the 5.3 chevy motor has more power than the 5.4 (315 vs 310) and the ford motor even has an extra valve per cylinder over the chevy, not to mention a bump in displacement. plus the chevys fuel mileage is better.
long live the titan. its time for an updated model thatll kick all the other trucks ass's like it did when it first came out!
shaneraleigh the updated model now is great!
they should run this test again with all 1990 models to show how age changes trucks
@dustman01 not the half ton trucks, and plus the new ford and dodge trucks got a major over haul and there is one for the HD silverado and sierra coming for 2011 models
@homeboylx the 5.7 has 340hp and the 6.1 hemi has 390. but u right about the gm
@juggernautxtr the 5.7 hemi does really well for its size you have to give it that, it can pull 10,000 pounds gets 20 mpg. what they can acomplish with that size of an motor is shocking compared to gm the need a bigger size to try to come close example the 5.7 has 390hp and 407pound ft of torque and the gm 6.0 V8 has 367hp and 375pound ft of torque.
awesome test....im a diehard chevy guy and i was betting on the toyota to win. I didnt know the chevy was running the 6.2 though, i figured 5.3 or 6.0
No one will ever make a sexier truck than the 2004 GMC Sierra Denali w/ Quadrasteer.
@nachos1990 The z06 has a 7.0L engine.
z06 is a 7.0 small block...zr1 has the smaller engine and it is a sbc as well
because they changed their transmissions from a 4-speed to a 6-speed transmission and they are better then before
@ryanleewhite2 that truck isnt made for pulling though its made for offroad just because it has a more powerful engine doesnt mean it can pull more
ram best looks and interior
@Totenhosen17 I thought it was the opposite, i,e. a harsher ride shouldn't be slower...I mean mechanically speaking when u have less movement it leads to less loss of energy and better translation of power....but the real life tests show it as u said
@NIZMOZ44 I apologize. The Tundra was not the newer model Tundra that I drove. It was the older one and the only one that wasn't the newer body style. Otherwise I would rate them as Tundra, Titan, Sierra, Dodge and Ford last.
@theunexplanatory They use the same trailers and weights if you would look. I doubt the difference is a lot, unless for some reason everything they used was made with defects so all the trailers drastically varied in weight. And I bet the drivers are just flooring it or have some sort of advice being given to them. I don't think they are amateur drivers. I'm just not sure if they repeat the tests to get an average, which I'd think they would do.
its not a 0-60 test. the time refelects how powerful and the towing capabilities on a hill. hence the truck with the best load towing power makes it to the top first.
@judith3727 the stock might have different specs with the drive train etc
They tested the dodge hemi for towing? That's why dodge has the cummings diesel. The hemi is meant more for speed.
lets get some diesel half ton pickups then compete them now that would be getting interesting
The Titans are good, reliable trucks, but if you have to haul anything, you should go with another truck, especially the 04-07 models. The new 08 Titans improved the axles a little bit, going from a 32 spline to a 35 spline, but the ring and pinion are the same size. 08 and up also offers bigger brakes. The axle ring and pinions are not nearly as strong as the other trucks because they are much smaller. What makes it a great offroad truck hinders it when towing.
@91rxl650 the 6.2 puts out 403hp, thats only 13 more hp they should have made it more around 410 like you were saying. I think the hemi is a better experience, you get 390hp and 407ft of torque you get 20 miles per gallon and can tow 10,000 pounds when fully equipped in that department plus the 6.2 really shouldn't be compared to because the 6.0V8 is more in it's competition range. even though it could compete if it had the transmission to back all its power
@codyshmody Then you haven't seen many tow tests..... Check any tow test done between the GM Duramax and Ford Powerstroke engine. Duramax won each time, no matter which mag did it, and half the mags used the F450 instead of F350.
The ram might not have accelerated as fast, but in real life, it'll walk off and leave the others on the long grades and heavy pulls. Flat, tall torque curves are the secret.
got it bro.
not a fan of the titian, but redo this test when they put the 4bt cummins in them!
100% agreed
@tsblair95 there are many tests that the silverado lost in one of them is the traction control test and also the hill climb one......if he was from gm he would have said the silverado would have won in those two.
@nachos1990 i didn't look it up on google. it's called knowing what the hell you're talking about before trying to argue with someone.
@ssj02 Stiffer shocks in the sierra make for a worse launch than the silverado.
@dbennett4 thats what i thought. i thought the silverado had the 5.3 and 6.0 and the GMC had the 6.2. oh well.
@ledzep112 I have a half ton 360 I know the dodge has more potential but with it's factory gears it's not putting the power to the road. Still right with the chevy and toyota. Put 4.10's in the ram problem solved.
@homeboylx she is a chevy person have to let her think her way cause racing and towing are 2 differant things specially when it comes to a z-71 against a normal truck not built for speed.
GM FTW.
@judith3727 Any clue why is the Silverado faster that the Sierra?? is it the weight? or do they use different differentials?
Say that to their traction test where Ford and Toyota beat the Sierra and Silverado, not to mention the Ram and Titan as well.
Chevy's 6.2L has what they say like 410 horsepower? That's pretty good power, but pretty sad that the 5.7L Hemi for the '09 Ram 1500 puts out 390 hp and with a much bigger motor they only have a 20 hp advantage on it. The 6.1L SRT8 Hemi puts out 425 hp. 15 hp more with a smaller motor.
agreed
@judith3727 so what you telling me is the hemi will beat the 6.0 V8 but not the 5.3?
and also dodge isn't the best with transmissions so if they did throw in one more gear it would get beat and also im talking about true power without the transmission in this equation, I meant the hemi makes the 6.0 v8 look pathetic because the hemi put out more "power" and the 6.0 should put out more seeing how its a bigger engine.
go chevy!!!!
they are... Nissan is totally re-doing the titian for 2010. New engine, exterior, interior. and its going to be based off the Ram
Since when can you get silverados with 6.2L engines? I thought that was only available in the Sierra Denali.
@judith3727 and a 5.7 hemi can beat a vortec 6.0
I think they used the 4.6 in the ford. How cheap. This is the first tow test I've seen a ford loose at
@austinman1995 yeah but the only problem is the ford used the 5.4, the smallest of the pack. they didnt use the 6.2 because of the turbos. but, they all fall under the same category. why is the tundra considered a half-ton if the rest of them, other than the titan, all have more leaf springs? when do they go to the 3/4 ton category? the tundra has one of the lowest payloads, its right on the nose of the heaviest of the other trucks, other than the 6.2 gm now, and its a ?half-ton? i dont get it.
also, the viper is 8.4...so you don't know too much.
@geoBM818 when toyota first came out with the tundra, it was making 450hp, and they cut it back for competition. toyota tests the durability of everything, first, before upping the power. this is to see where the weak spots are, they beef that up, then they turn up the juice lol. it is no joke, that computer has so much potential that it is scary. i mean, they hang with the 6.2, so why turn loose now, right? lol i cant wait til they unleash that computer. what the net said about it anyway...
i dont think they are canning the 4.6. I believe the new f100 is gonna have the option of 4.6 and the new ecoboost
they didnt even make the engines close to eachother. i mean, instead of the 6.2, they should've used the 5.3 in the chev and sierra. the ford had a 5.4, the toyota had 5.7 and i dont know what the nissan had. all im saying is they should have made the engines closer together
@Powerstrokekid1 i thought u meant the truck in the vid
um therers a 6.2 liter engines in those trucks or did you not listen?
The experiment isn't all controlled because different drivers and how would he know how it feels unless you're in the truck he couldn't have had driven all of them before
@Xxjohnnyboy1xX by the way its Cummins, not cummings
3 valves in each cylinder? 2 intank and 1 exhaust valves right. they must be behind by a landslide even thou they did raise the horsepower and fuel economy, its hard to believe they cant advance in cams & valves. they could've scrap it then make a better 4 or 5 valve DOHC with a displacement that rivals everyone. when you said the 3 valve, did you mean 3 valves in each cylinder?
the chevy and gmc both had the 6.2, should have ran one with the 6.2 and the other with the 5.3
@mikelove2110 for sure it reliability its good, cmon man,its a nissan, but for sure every truck can pull, push, ect. but they don't have the same power or fuel savings,Toyota and GMC (or Chevrolet, which I don't know why they have both models, they're the same engine, this test is weird for my opinion)are in the top for me and this is coming from a Ram dude, because of the power, technology and fuel saving that they have, but for my opinion Nissan should not do trucks, except for the bigger diesel ones :D
this is the first year (2009)
Exactly, then why whould he say something like that? Just because he couldn´t come up with something better? I don´t undetstand it either.
but thats not my question benchn280. i asked why wouldnt the seirra and the chevy finish exactly the same. because they are the exact same truck. the only reasonable answer is that the driver of the GMC doesnt know how to drive.
but this video proves it, chevy is the best
question when won't a 6.2 liter beat a smaller 5.4 liter?
can you say not even equivalent?
pssss! 7,2%.
11,5% 8km hill. My 20y Mercedes 208D 72hp 2,3l diesel 2200-pound on bed and 4000-pound trailer. this wos a test!
why did th ram hit the brakes going up the hill?
Now if they put a 2012 Ford F-150 EcoBoost against the other trucks, the Ford would DOMINATE.
@tsblair95 where else would ou test it? if you look at the other videos the the ford and nissan do just as well if he was from gm he would have said the silverado would win in almost everything
i think its awesome that chevy has to use a 6.2 to outdue the 5.4. What is chevy going to do when the ford 6.2 with more hp and torque than chevys is dropped in the f150. I guess they will probably put the 427 in it lol
@TheJoecool1972 Those new hemi's are nothing like the old ones. kind of a joke in my eyes.
@roryhunter123456
Hold on, you just said there's no replacement for displacement, yet you put down the Toyota which for it's displacement has the best overall power per liter beside the Dodge Ram? Even better than the Vortec 6200? And did you forget the Tundra's iForce motor is bigger than the 5.6L Titan, 5.4L Ford, and 5.3L GM?
do i hav to say it again? my dad could pull a 5th wheel camper up their in his '96 dodge 3500 cummins!!!
Its about time Ford put some power into their trucks.
i know that it pulls alot but trying to max it out then do 5000 mph thats not safe plus ur going to blow the motor out the truck.
how much would that cost because i got my vehicle custom with c6
pretty sure the tundra has more power with a smaller engine...so displacement has absolutely nothing to do with it...
everyone is bitching about the chevy having a 6.2 liter engine but all the did was take the best engine from each of them and the best ford has to offer is the 5.4 and toyotas best is the 5.7 liter so yeah
the last major recall is with the F-250 diesel trucks that blows a hell lot of fire. when i got it fixed i said screw it buy it back and said fuck you for giving me a lemon truck. it was cool when the fire came out. the 2nd part was it proven by ford or by the people? its a good bold move with them bringin out the TT V6+ but what is good about it that rivals toyotas Variable valve Technology? about my idea that ford should build more US factories. should they?
why the sierra came 3rd while the silverado came 1st arent they like the same
if u wanted a controlled test, wouldnt u use the same trailer on each truck not six different trailers aswell as the same driver in each time. Reaction time fr the driver aswell as a small variation in the running gear in the trailer could had put the toyota on top easy
all of these tests are accurate and tested in fair conditions. For all you people who complain that one truck is better than another no matter what this said you have been proved wrong so stop complaining because you bought a obselete truck go cry to mama
In britain you will struggle to find a pick up or any 4x4 with more than a 4lt engine.
Yeah and thats why the next titan will actually be a ram
i find ford troubling enough with their recalls. how unfortunante. even though they decide to goto a V6 twin turbo they are behind with engine technology. they did step up in quality of a truck tho. ill just give them that.
@juggernautxtr Yeah, im like chrysler better because most of the chevy vehicles we had were shit and our dodge ram 2008 is awesome.
im saying that the corvette had to get a supercharger on it to compete with the Viper. if a Viper had the same supercharger on that V10 corvette's would be ashamed. the viper has lots of performance parts on the motor but it's just straight motor...no forced intake. so what were you trying to prove? that corvettes suck? well done.
oh what year did they change it?
I wish it was as easy as that. But, i think were coming to the point where our Domestic vehicles are more foreign than the imports. Ford is making huge plans to outsource just about everything. Alot of there vehicles are already being made in Mexico and other places. On the otherhand alot of japanese vehicles are made Here in the US. I think we're gonna see a point where the Domestics are less valuable to the US economy than imports.
@geoBM818 Its a figure of speech, i'm not that stupid what i men't was you can't be puling 10,000 pounds and then doing 100mph. is that better?
again....chevy rules!
the 08 version's were all close but the Ford and Nissan just were not up to par. The Chevy,Ram,GMC and Toyota were all great preforming trucks, and it's still that way now. But my 04 5.9 Cummins 2500 could tow a Vio80 up that hill like nothing is attached to it, you wouldn't even have to press the peddle 40% and you would still be pulling up the hill at 65+ MPH, you could let go of the gas and the cummins would still be pulling up the hill, that's when you know that's one TOUGH MOFO!
@judith3727 well duh! if its a manual against an automatic... manual has it... that dodge ram probally wasnt the best model either.
I dont see why they would see which truck is faster that is completely stupid in a way a truck is meant to pull heavy loads not to be an oversized camaro
im gonna say the silverado is only faster in the 1/4 unloaded and the pull up this hill because it is about 500lbs lighter than the tundra crewmax. Sure it has more hp and tq but that is coming from a larger displacement slower revving pushrod. Vs the tundras smaller smaller bore 32 valve DOHC. Do this test again but with the double cab tundra. I mean its still just as roomy inside as the chevy. except i would wager the double cab would win every race loaded or unloaded
beuse its a half ton pick up
Transmissions are different.
Not a fair fight. U put a6.0l agenst 5.0ls
