Fun to watch the races. On the other hand, I have never bought a truck to race. I don't care how fast a truck is, as long as it is dependable, durable, efficient, and hauls what I need it to. Seems that people buy vehicles to play with nowadays. Different strokes for different folks.
Yes, nowadays drag racing seems like the only factor to determine a good vehicle, from trucks to SUVs to family cars, etc. LOL! I see drag racing on every channel. 😂
Yes Toyota specified they want the Tundra to be a "family road trip" vehicle not so much a heavy duty truck since Ford and other USA brands already make super duty trucks
@Self Made Auto yeah a big joke 70% of the Maverick orders have been hybrid. Hybrid already sold out for 2022 model year. But sure it's a joke. 42mpg is a joke I will laugh at everytime.
I'd say out of the group, the Santa Cruz was probably the most impressive, I mean it did only trail the new tundra by a fender being just a single turbo 4-banger. That said, I'd most likely take the frontier if I'm looking for a work truck. More capabilities than the Cruz, not as spendy as the full sizers, it should be less prone to failure, and it's a good looking truck. :)
This. I’m pretty much deciding between a Frontier and a Santa Cruz (I’m not really a fan of the Maverick’s looks even though it is really impressive in capability). The most trucky things I will do are haul dirt bikes and kayaks and help friends move. However, having that longer bed definitely helps with those things and the fuel economy in the Santa Cruz isn’t significantly better to make up the difference. The trim levels I would choose for each one are equally priced as well (SV vs SEL Premium). Plus, you get more street cred with the Frontier at truck shows. I do feel that the Santa Cruz power train is really underrated. It has more horsepower than the current Ford Ranger, and it has more torque than the Frontier as well. I think Hyundai has a good thing going with the Santa Cruz, and I look forward to seeing how they build on that. I would probably start with adding a hybrid AWD option before Ford does and maybe ditching the DCT (although at least it isn’t a CVT).
@@colten53 depending on the sort, if in theory, the cruz is rated at 3,500-4k lbs. max tow (I dont know what its rated at) and you'll at most tow 2k-2,500 lbs, itll probably be your go-to "truck". And if you need a bed that's 6' or longer, utility trailers are always a more affordable option. It's nice to get more than what's needed, but sometimes getting whats just right works especially if the price difference is there. My current "truck" is mine and my wifes '04 durango (5.7l v8, 8,700 lbs. max tow) and have used it to move one of my other vehicles (about 4k lbs.) across states. :)
Can't wait to see the Tundra Hybrid compete in this event. Also, wondering if you are going to run all these trucks on a closed circuit track and assess their handling and ride dynamics. Maybe fastest track time, on same circuit with same driver?
At a mile above sea level the frontier was at a huge disadvantage, they really need to do these races at sea level or atleast not a mile! Above sea level.
I have a friend with a factory supercharged 5.7 Tundra, that thing is insane. Turbos are cool but if every vehicle has forced induction, the "No replacement for displacement" is still a fact.
*On paper I was worried that the Tundra would be faster* But surprisingly it's 0 to 60 was no faster than the raptor on 37's . 37's should be a huge disadvantage.
These drag races are pointless. Everyone can read the specs. Basically you need to know the official 0-60 time, sometimes things like wheel size or power to weight ratio. Without even watching I predicted all the results. It is still fun to watch but the results are too predictable.
Raptor on 37s is different from the 35s version. They have different frames and axle ratios and what not so the 37s version is a commitment if buying. Saw a detailed breakdown on thestraightpipes. So realistically it's weight mainly.
@@TRCKFRK 37s will kill your 0-60 even with different gears. Heck 35s will too, and 33s for that matter. What did the Tundra have? 32s? Just run the standard F150 and you will see. Heck even run a 2.7 EcoBoost, they pretty much run similar 0-60 as the 3.5 spoiler alert, it's faster than the Tundra.
@@bryanhersman4037 Exactly. I expected the Tundra, which is a F-150 EcoBoost clone, to pull away. I was actually surprised that the Raptor on 37's closed the gap. My bro in law had a tune on his non Platinum 2015. He thinks the stock tune may be a bit better on the Platinum since his unturned wasn't as quick as mine. I still haven't tuned mine. The photo finish camera angle is flawed. The angle used would give a few feet advantage to the Tundra. Raptor won if the camera was in line with the cones.

F150 fx4 with the 3.5 would have matched the tundra or beat it. But the point of the video really wasn’t who’s the fastest it was about newest which the Raptor just barely came out while the current F150 been out for about 9 months now

@@wonaldgrump9654 I doubt they'll do that, the F150 with the 3.5 has no difficulty breaking its tires loose just about any time it's in 2wd. A Tacoma with a similar engine would be unsafe to for most to drive.

@@RegisteredNurseLA You're talking about that with certainty. The Tundra has a new frame, suspension, engine, and trans. There is no way to be certain it will be flawless. It's smart to wait a year or two after the release of a new model even if it's a Toyota. Believe it or not, but Toyotas do still have common issues especially when a new model is released. They're not immune to that. I know we're supposed to fall to our knees and worship any Toyota made, but the real world doesn't fit the holy scriptures of Toyota. 2AZ-FE, first gen 4 Runners 3.0 OHV V6 blowing head gaskets, FJ Cruisers front fenders cracking, Tacoma's rusting in half to name a couple hiccups.
it can of course out tow the Maverick and Santa Cruz in the real world and will probably outlast them both. Wonder is they will ever come turbo from the factory.
The Tundra wasn't having to move a 37" tire. That Raptor was making more power for sure. A normal F-150 with the 3.5L EB likely would have been faster than any of these trucks.
I love my 2012 ram and it holds its own against newer designs especially in torque hauling weight… they even get better fuel economy than ecoboost towing (according to TFL). It’s not always about how fast a truck is. However I know it’s about time for a little update to the hemi to keep it competitive against 20 year newer designs. It’s basically the same motor that came out in 2002/2003 with a couple improvements. Maybe direct injection?
The Raptor did really well. Based on this Tundra's spec, it is about 5500#. The Raptor in this spec is about 5900#. The new Tundra TRD Pro is about 6000# so closer to the Raptor's weight. The Tundra TRD Pro comes with the higher rated hybrid powerplant that won't be available until next year.
Seriously? Rewatch Top Gear . It was funny. This was a couple fat guys driving pickups. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching this channel but it's never caused me so much as a chuckle whereas Top Gear commonly induced eye watering laughs.
Well it did "win" in that it was the quickest truck they tested here, just a slow driver reaction. It was quicker than the Tundra. The margin was similar to the difference between the Tundra and the Hyundai. Had they let similar driver error fly on that race the Hyundai would have "beaten" the Toyota.
I new from the get go the ford and the 37s would lose for the simple reason, 37s aren't made for racing but off roading !! Race off road there be a different outcome ( 37s will shine ) !!
I know this was tested in a different location than the test with the Maverick Hybrid, but I find it interesting that the AWD 2.0 turbo Maverick is only marginally faster to 60 than the hybrid. Seems like the Maverick hybrid did 0-60 in like 7.95 seconds vs like 7.75 in the turbo. Granted, the hybrid would probably get progressively slower if you kept in the throttle since the little battery would probably be fully discharged before the end of a 1/4 mile, but still interesting to see that the Maverick turbo was only marginally faster. Also, I strongly dislike the pumped in/phony V8 noise in the Tundra (or fake noises in general). Car manufacturers should either embrace the noise that their engines naturally make or focus on making the interior noise quieter, not filling it with a fake sound.
I wonder how the GM 1500s with the 6.2 would have done compared to these two. Also would have been fun to throw in the TRX at the end, just to show the difference. I got passed by a TRX on a long stretch of road recently, he also passed the car in front of me, and the 18-wheeler in front of them. It was a very quick pass, and the thing sounded amazing.
I noticed that the TRL rarely get the chance to test the vehicles from Rivian and Hummer. Is scheduling the real reason for declining, or is it something else
The Hyundai did good, just not sure about the use of a dual clutch in that type of vehicle. A torque converter would seem more appropriate…. The difference at the finish line between the raptor and the tundra was just reaction time at the starting line. The raptor is quicker ….
I wasn't expecting that. I thought you would need Tundra Hybrid to beat the Raptor. On another note with Toyota having turbo now can it be reliable as N/A? Can Toyota still keep the king of reliability tag?
@@CACressida I hope they continue to keep quality and reliability as first priority. I think they try to build the fastest 0-60 or fast baja running truck what journalist wants vs what people wants. For example TRD exhaust. Journalist love it and I hate it. So annoying. When Toyota released the diesel engine video I really thought they will bring in 2.8 turbo diesel or 4.5 turbo diesel to USA. I "think" those are the things people want. (I could be wrong).
Always great videos, I do have one comment or thought for a change in 0-60 testing. I know everyone is always about 0-60 because it's been the go to test forever but I think it's kinda useless unless you are always trying to drag race people at a light. I wish more publications would publish/test two different passing scenarios. Maybe one from like 20-60 and another 50-80 or 60-90. I think those are much more useful. I know I have passed people on two lane roads in some rental cars that really ran out of steam. And manufacturers really play to the 0-60 because that'll be what everyone tests, so they will focus on these launch controls to get a good number but then its not something you can replicate yourself in real world.

LOL the commercial for Keeps at the end with Nathan "I didn't say anything" 😂
I really like the spec of the Raptor with the orange Ford on the grill. Also really quick considering it has 37s.
That means nothing. You can change the differential ratios to fix that
@@rawsjay4119 to my knowledge Ford doesnt use different gears in the model equipped with 37's though.
@@ALMX5DP they don’t
@@rawsjay4119 Different gears will change the shift points for sure, but they will not offset the additional mass of the larger tires.
Should of brake boosted the raptor a little might of got them big tires out front .
You need to have the hybrid Maverick and do a how many times they have to refuel in a 2 week time span
Too applicable to the real-world use of a pickup...
Or how many times you would have to get a hotel and spend the night… From point a to point B
@Self Made Auto yeah a big joke 70% of the Maverick orders have been hybrid. Hybrid already sold out for 2022 model year. But sure it's a joke. 42mpg is a joke I will laugh at everytime.
Using Nathan in the Keeps ad....EPIC..
frontier for sure... new frontier looks awesome especially the pro4x imho they killed the refresh
“Nissan” and “less prone to failure” don’t belong in the same paragraph.
@@thurmanjr7 we're not talking about their car line-up, lol.
Can't wait to see the Tundra Hybrid compete in this event. Also, wondering if you are going to run all these trucks on a closed circuit track and assess their handling and ride dynamics. Maybe fastest track time, on same circuit with same driver?
but let's be honest, it won't be relevant, no sane person would use the road as a track
The Santa Cruz did a lot better than what I thought it would do, and the poor Frontier chocked! Great video guys!
Frontier all day!
*On paper I was worried that the Tundra would be faster*
But surprisingly it's 0 to 60 was no faster than the raptor on 37's .
37's should be a huge disadvantage.
If they would have raced the trd pro with the hybrid engine the tundra would have won by a lot more with those 37’s on the raptor
A stock F-150 is 6 seconds, even into the 5's with someone who knows their truck.
And we've seen on this channel that a 5 Star Tuned F-150 4x4 can do 4.7 sec
I've got a 2015 Platinum.
My bro in law had a tune on his non Platinum 2015. He thinks the stock tune may be a bit better on the Platinum since his unturned wasn't as quick as mine.
I still haven't tuned mine. It's already a super sleeper and tows great
Just for the heck of it, do a Roll in the Santa Cruz vs the Raptor and Tundra. I think the little trucklet will surprise a lot of people.
Relax everyone! For entertainment purposes only. In the real world no one cares who's truck is fastest to 60.
I do... 😂
The photo finish camera angle is flawed. The angle used would give a few feet advantage to the Tundra. Raptor won if the camera was in line with the cones.
Theirs always a reason if your fan if it. In this video tundra won .
Best Keeps ad I've seen yet. I needed the chuckles this morning fellas, thanks much🤙 Good vidjéo too!
That Raptor is a beast
That raptor exhaust sounds fantastic.
For a Corvair. 🙄

Great video. If I didnt see it with my eyes, I wouldn't believe it. Let's go Tundra!
Can’t wait for the TRD Pro
I’d still take the Frontier over the Cruz I could careless about speed. Frontier would last longer In the long term plus a small lift and bigger tires looks awesome on these
I agree real truck vs a want to be a truck no comparison and sante Cruz is over 40000 lol
Took the words wright out of my mouth.
Love the infomercial by Kase & Nathan, love it, cheers Kirk
Needed to test Tundra hybrid against Raptor. I know I know it’s not on the market yet. Just saying apples to apples would have been regular ford 150 with twin turbo eco boost.
F150 fx4 with the 3.5 would have matched the tundra or beat it. But the point of the video really wasn’t who’s the fastest it was about newest which the Raptor just barely came out while the current F150 been out for about 9 months now
@@scotturich sure the fx4 would beat it. That’s my whole point. Will it beat the Tundra hybrid is the question. More apples to apples. PS: most drag races are for the purpose of finding the “fastest”

Imagine if the Tundra had the hybrid system. I say low to high six second 0-60 time at least.
They have one coming out soon
Imagine if everything this TTV6 has was in the new Tacoma and the Tundra 22 had everything the TTV6 has but was upgraded to a TTV8 with a better battery type for the hybrid.
@@wonaldgrump9654 I doubt they'll do that, the F150 with the 3.5 has no difficulty breaking its tires loose just about any time it's in 2wd. A Tacoma with a similar engine would be unsafe to for most to drive.
And put it on 37’s.
Started laughing when he said “(Raptor) sounds faster” and they’re literally neck and neck haha
Impressive. Holding out for the hybrid version (and all bugs to be worked out).
They’ve been working on the tundra forever now so they better have the bugs worked out lol

@@FranklinBurns42 its a yota truck, dependable as a sunday morning
I’d buy the Frontier, it’s not turbo charged, I prefer that because it’s simpler and hopefully less expensive to work on long term.

Toyota won and it wasn't even the hybrid XD
Only on driver reaction time, not actual et !!
The Tundra wasn't having to move a 37" tire. That Raptor was making more power for sure. A normal F-150 with the 3.5L EB likely would have been faster than any of these trucks.

I would have added a 6.2gm and ram hemi to this as well (even though they aren't "all new")
I love my 2012 ram and it holds its own against newer designs especially in torque hauling weight… they even get better fuel economy than ecoboost towing (according to TFL). It’s not always about how fast a truck is. However I know it’s about time for a little update to the hemi to keep it competitive against 20 year newer designs. It’s basically the same motor that came out in 2002/2003 with a couple improvements. Maybe direct injection?
Why can't people listen? Is it really that hard?

How do submit that commercial for an award? Great video gentlemen, funny ass commercial.👍
TFL = the best YT channels. 👍🏼
I started chuckling watching Nathan on the Keep's segment, expecting something...lol.
The tire size on the Raptor kills the power. 37" vs 33" the 37's are super heavy not to mention much taller.
Agree.
Tundra had bitch tires
Raptor exhaust sound reminds of the 6.0 power stroke with aftermarket exhausts.
Or Chewbacca.

Hopefully Hyundai will put their 3.5l twin turbo engine in the Santa Cruz sometime in the future. Possible N variant.
That was awesome great vid guys!
Great job! I was thinking the Raptor would win with its more powerful engine. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
It’s heavier and on 37” off road tires. The standard Raptor on 35s would have beat the Tundra
@@bryanhersman4037 from the launch it kinda appeared that the Raptor's hood raises before the Tundras. Makes it seem like it got a pretty fair start.
@@ALMX5DP but fan boys want to win all the time! All they can do is cry and type in the comments now! Not fair! 🤧😭
I new from the get go the ford and the 37s would lose for the simple reason,
37s aren't made for racing but off roading !!
Yea I didn't like the fake v8 sound from the tundra, the good news is it can be turn off with one of those expensive obd scan tools
Okay, I hate the imbedded commercials but this one was hilarious!!!
I wonder how the GM 1500s with the 6.2 would have done compared to these two. Also would have been fun to throw in the TRX at the end, just to show the difference. Damnnnnn that’s was a good episode. Good job TFL 👊🏽
The Hyundai did good, just not sure about the use of a dual clutch in that type of vehicle. A torque converter would seem more appropriate…. The difference at the finish line between the raptor and the tundra was just reaction time at the starting line. The raptor is quicker ….
Sad Roman makes me sad. Then, in my moment of despair, the Keeps ad comes on. Life is good.
I wasn't expecting that. I thought you would need Tundra Hybrid to beat the Raptor. On another note with Toyota having turbo now can it be reliable as N/A? Can Toyota still keep the king of reliability tag?
Toyotas been making Turbo charged engines since the 80s. I think a couple of compressors won't ruin the reliability of the engines.
