We (the family and I) were at an antique tractor show in southern Michigan today.
My 5yr old daughter sees this guy loading a trailer with a bunch of vintage garden tractors on it. She got all excited, "is that Taryl?" She asked. "Nope" I said. Then she got bummed out.
She's been watching with me since the very early days and she loves to work with me on anything mechanical. She's got a '67 simplicity 707 she calls her "beautiful tractor."

Funny thing is that they have been using this plastic camshafts and governors for a couple of decades at least, i have several mowers, one of them a 2002 model and i recently decided to overhaul the engine and it had that plastic cam in it, not a blemish on it,not defending Briggs but it is what it is,everything being made today and for quite some time has been like this, plastics galore, on the 550 EX OHV mowers they dont even use gaskets on certain areas, on the area where the rockers are or in the breathing chamber, they use grey RTV.
At my work we have a fleet of new diesel trucks both Chevys and Fords, they are constantly needing to be jumped because they are putting so many electronics on these new cars and Diesels use a glow plug rail that decimates battery current when being started so by design they are already taxed even with 2 batteries, leave a Diesel truck at the airport while you go to Belize on vacation for a week, make sure you have some jumper cables in your suitcase when you get back ha ha ha ha

The engineer says to the manufacturer, “we need to make these parts such as the cam gear and governor out of metal.” The manufacturer says to the engineer, “yeah, but we are going to make them out of plastic because it will save money, sell more parts, gain more labor income for shops, and sell more engine.” After all, let’s think about the bottom line first, not the customer, or our reputation and pride in the product.

The first time I pulled ones of these engines / motors apart (same observed problem), I didn't even find one piece of the governor assembly bigger than ¼" and almost made the mistake of thinking it didn't have one!
As a side note, the use of phenolic plastic in these engines is not a problem if maintained and not used on really hot temperature days.
The look of that engine oil was brutal. When you turned the open crankcase upsidedown, the last of the remaining oil looked like water! Maybe that's the kind of yoga oil Slippers uses. :)

Love you videos!!! Pretty cool to not only learn a thing to two, but be entertained as well!! I am however very disappointed in Briggs as the quality they now produce is just trash. Their new cheap line of engines now feature “Just check and add” technology (LOL) with no oil changes needed (WTF)??? They have a plastic cam, AND the gear that drives the cam on the crankshaft is also plastic!!! Ask yourself how long will this engine last with plastic parts inside and B&S telling the consumer to never change the oil?? Hell, the average person never changes the oil in their small engines to begin with (and wonder why they have issues) but now Briggs says you don’t need to. $100 says this is just a way for B&S to sell more engines, which they will be very sorry they did. Just go to your local Lowe’s and look out front. Look at all the Craftsman mowers, and pressure washers that are returns with blown motors or internal damage. All summer long, I have seen outside my local Lowe’s is returned B&S products that customers do not like, or the products have failed completely. JUNK!

OOps... In the UK A dynsamo and an Alternator have always been two different things. The dynamo was the old style generator that output DC current whereas the Alternator was tthe more modern replacement for the Dynamo but it output AC current which had to be rectified to DC and then regulated to the correct voltage for the vehicle. The advantage of the Alternator was that it output higher current at lower revs so would put charge to the battery even at Tickover. The Dynamo output varied with the speed it ran and wouldn't give enough to keep a battery charged at tickover but it too had to be regulated at high speed to keep the voltage within the limits that the battery...... Now there's yer Breakfast .. English style.

Curious as to why Briggs has an oil filter on many of the "Professional" series engines? This pressure washer version doesn't seem to have one but many do & my 8.75 lawn mower engine does. Reason I ask is because, as Taryl points out, the governor utilizes a splash lube system just like many other engines that don't have filters; ie, Quantum, Honda, Tecumseh, etc. So, does the "Professional" filter actually filter any contaminants, and if so, why don't the other mfgs include one?

  • @shartne

Bolt remover I never heard a socket called that before? LOL thats new to me. If people would change the oil more often like they should then the metal flakes will come out when they change the oil. didnt realize that the oil should be change pretty often on the small engines. Like about after every 3 or 4 uses. You gotta fart or your doing it wrong.

@@finncampeau4922 Peaches are part of the almond family. Also, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Nissan Motor Company, motorcycle, motor rev, who gives a shit. But yes, some (including me) consider motors to be electrical consisting of copper windings in a magnetic field. Engines basically use combustion given an array of fuels. In conclusion, is not a space shuttle, who gives a shit, your grammar is ridiculous. Lol... love

The real difference, is the fact that "motors" run on electricity, while "engines" run on combustion. ... On the rare occasions we encounter one, we refer to a steam locomotive as an engine, the same word that we give to the motive power of an aircraft. But all electrical devices are driven by motors
