Taryl Fixes All i neeeed some help I have the same engine but I took the heads off because it bend a rod for some reason so I thought maybe something sirve the valves but now that I seen your video and it was having the same symptoms so not I know it’s the camshaft but I need help with where to find the part for model- 406777 and type 0128-E1
Is there any other reason that particular engine would have those symptoms besides a cam problem
I plan on getting some tee shirts in a few days... How about a shirt with that Deere Mower ya shot the arrows in?
Are the briggs professional series the Same engine?
Hey I enjoy your content I have a brigss 19 hp craftsman t2200 it runs great but when I cut it off it sounds like it has a knock... only when I cut it off. Any ideas?
...for those of you who might not appreciate the humor, don't just watch a couple minutes and write Taryl off as an oaf who isn't a first-class repairman...this guy REALLY knows his stuff...and is a very good, thorough, teacher..really goes through the details... :)
I enjoy a laugh while I work and just having fun make a great place to work and keep employees to
Taryl is awesome.
I find my self coming back as I enjoy watching the program..
'Terodactyl here!! HAHA..
He makes learning fun.
😊☺️😏😀😃😄😁😆😅😂🤣😅😂🤣
Taryl all I can say is YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!! You know more about small engines than anyone I have ever met. Your videos are excellent and entertaining. Love to meet you someday. Keep up the great work. Now there's your dinner. PS Tell Slippers to go get a real job before he gets killed loitering in your shop. LOL
i would watch more of these videos if they didn’t have those cheesy intros
Skip over them.
First, disconnect the plug wires. If the popping stops, it's ignition or crank key sheared. Check the compression. If low, go after that. A lean carburetor can cause popping in the intake or exhaust. If the rockers are very loose, it could be the valve seat. Replace the head.
2+8 probably is 28 with that stupid common core math.
Just take out the governor. We have enough government in our lives messin' with us already.
Long But You are a Great Teacher Thanks
Without the governor....just like that engine...it will run wild....and blow itself up...lol
*Taryl Fixes All* I look forward to all your videos. Your skits are funny, engine repair skills and tips are an excellent bonus.
How do you fix a engine that runs wide opening at idle on a 23hp briggs intex v twin
My single banger Intek was backfiring. I thought I put the cam in wrong. Turns out that I forgot to torque the flywheel bolt and sheered the key. That threw the ignition timing off.
Another great video by Taryl!
I like the videos of replacing internal parts and how to line things up and settings etc. It makes for a proud moment when it starts and runs like it's supposed to.
I'm gonna look through more of your videos and see if you have anything about the older opposed twin Briggs engines. I have a 2001 model (that I got used last year). It's a 17hp I/C engine that I put on the back of our Snapper RER. Plenty of power when it runs right but I think it stopped pumping fuel a few days ago. I checked the fuel tank and it's not clogged up. I'm going to go through everything real good and give it a good checkover. Gonna check the valve clearance for one, it was popping before it stopped on me too...
Did anyone ever tell you that if you lost your job as a famous actor that you could get into doing small engine repairs?
good thing the oil filter is working
Great camera work! It is nice to see a repair video by someone who KNOWS what they are doing. Thanks
I agree on the great camera work and I can see very good what he’s talking about
People do that crap (poor maintenance and none at all) and then whine when they have to pay $$ to get something fixed. Just spend $15 a year and change the oil and be done with it.
Very True.....i know people that just get a mower and run it into the ground....only get a few years out of a mower/tiller/generator/snowblower
Then they are the first to call a product junk
If you put an end cap on the PVC pipe, it would be easier to tap in the seal. Great video !
Great videos! I recently picked up a L120 with 80 hours on it that has been sitting for about 5-7 years. Carb was gummed up something awful. Watched a few of your videos. Very helpful and informative!! Going to tackle the drive belt and pulleys next.
Well, at least you found the rest of that cam lobe.
Have you ever used a Harbor Freight Engine?
Thanks Taryl, YOU are the best small engine guy on the internet, So important to change the damn oil !!!!!!!!! Thanks for great videos and camera work too. How bout some cute girls in your videos????
Great one guys!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!
Always use GM Engine Oil Supplement or similar when replacing a cam shaft or lifters. This helps with break in.
hey bud i love your videos lol . im doing a total rebuild on a 44s877-0014-g1 briggs . sump seal was leaking tore that off then found a piston rod lock ring laying in bottom the decided to tear off heads to fix piston problem then found a rocker adjuster completely off with the pushrod not even connected. since i have engine totally apart i been searching for hours for all the torque specks and can not find them! do you know what service manual i need and where i can find one? any downloadable versions?
"We're not going to the moon. We're not going to the international space station. We're just trying to cut the grass." Haha I love it! I can't wait to use that quote!
Man, you are a unique individual. But, your skill set and knowledge is amazing.
Thank you, good sir.
Hello Taryl , is it possible the alluminium push rods should be on exhoust valve on 18hp Vanguard engine ?
No ,intake only .
Great how to video. Funny too I don’t see how somebody could give you a thumbs down. Anyway good job fellas keep them coming.thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am having this problem but cant seem to find the camshaft anymore. I have Briggs 40H777 and the part number is 690978. Any idea how I can determine a replacement that will work? Great videos by the way.
The Dactyl saves the day again. I got one doing the exact same thing on an 04 Simplicity. I asked a few people, they had no clue, looked it up and sure enough it took me to my favorite lawn mower man, originally I thought it was a blown head gasket, now I know I need to start sourcing a cam. Thank you.
Governor reset proceedure: Unlock. Full throttle. Move governor clockwise. Lock. Check for full motion and resistance. Done! :D
Like someone else mentioned, I'm glad I didn't write you guys off at the beginning. That was a very in-depth 33 minutes worth watching including some nuances not mentioned in some other videos I've seen. I learned these engines are prone pushing valve guides out, bending push rods and worse if gotten too hot. You may have mentioned that in a previous video, not sure. But when you pulled the rods and they were straight I can see why you immediately when to the cam issue and you were correct. Experience! Well done.
where can I get some of that dissassembly magic????!?!?!?!?!
Once again great job guys! I truly enjoy the comical skits and the knowledge that you provide. Keep up the great work!
Taryl.......What do you think of the Subaru EH99 40hp V twin.....I have one that back fires when it's not under load??
You need to do a video on setting the governor on the space shuttle !!
u mean the government? that will be a screw job.
Hey Taryl, My 446677 also doesn't have a decompression mech. Is this normal ?
If it wornt for y'all my job would have never become so fun to me! Now there's YOUR dinner!
Something you could also use something like STP oil treatment or Lucas oil treatment for assembly loop in a pinch they are both sticky in the same context for assembly that's what I do because I can't find the spray gel lube anywhere but ordering online but I get a little nervous putting my card online because I've been hacked wife
Mate what a top vid with funnies and good info. I know how to change the Fuel Control Unit on a Huey, adjust the Variable Inlet Guide Vanes, Idle Speed, Bleed Band, N2 range and Minimum Allowable Torque. But I haven't swung spanners on anything with pistons since I was a little bit younger. I've just bought a Bolens with an 18 horse on her, at least now I have an idea of what causes what, and how to do simple things like valve clearance. An older Bush Ranger says thanks mate.
This is a really helpful video
Got a 20.5 hp NON-OHV back fires at idle eventually smooths out and can move throttle to hi speed, if u lower to idle speed backfires continues and so on, help please
Like your videos. Very entertaining and very informative. The blues background music was an added bonus. Thank you for taking the time!
I like your video that sandpaper you're referring to as what was left of the camshaft and the reason it didn't hurt the lifter is because the lifters Harden and the camshaft is not Harden properly I've done a few of them I'm enjoying your videos and the critic but when I mentioned it to Briggs & Stratton they told me that I was the only one having that problem got so bad I was popping the lobes off of one cam put them on another. they spline i could be pressed on and off great video great info lack of Maintenance maybe pour oil Maybe poor cam lobe likely keep up the great work what did you all ever do with that Fairbanks Magneto you was playing with I believe you called her an old Wisconsin module
I been watching you for a while now. I learned a lot and laugh all the time at the beginning and end of your videos. I now have 3 snowblowers working and I am working on the 4th because of your videos. Thanks!!~
Is this Governor reset procedure similar on other mower engines like the kohler courage 20?
Sounds like uncle Andy hails from New Yawk. A baby sledge is a very handy item in any shop unlike handy andy.
TARYL and Guys R on the case 🤒🇬🇧👍👍👍👍👍😊
That's awesome!! Great video!! I found a box last night and it had a pro parts direct catalog in it and my valve spring compressor that I've been looking for. They're a good company to do business with. I've had great service so far.
I sound just like Uncle Andy when I'm sittin' on the crapper trying to work one out while someone is trying to talk to me.....
I scraped a 20 horse intec just to get rid of it I noticed that everything is very thin even the piston is thin there junk junk junk 😁😁😁
If you don't have a feeler gauge, you can use a peice of a pop can . It is close enough. For gasket sealer I use grease.
That engine has an oil bathed coating all over it. Attracting dirt and grit like mad killing the air cooling. Like a mummy wrap or putting a coat on keeping a body warm. The cooling fins are insulated with oil and dirt.
Tary, please do a video on the proper use of wrenches and channel locks, as far as placement when loosening and tightening.
Bear Russell placement should be in your hand. Next.
Don’t forgot on the regular intek the head gasket don’t last for shit. Mine went just before 50 hours...
mines got 420 hours on it Hmmmmm
@@ratbrain7743 what year is your engine?
"it a lawn mower, it aint the space shuttle" , friends if you didnt laugh a lung out then you have not heart in you!
Greetings from Devine, Texas!!!! 😎👋🏼👍🏼
Had one of these come on the shop same problem. Rounded cam lob just like yours
Bang pop tune-speirstheamazinghd
You did a great job man I am really impressed thank you for the information.
What is considered high mileage on riding lawnmower..
Another great video...especially throwing uncle Andy against the door...lol...those intec's have to be taken good care of..that why I use synthetic oil in all my lawn equipment...Mobil 1.... 10 w 30 high mileage...Cheers 🍺🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸
I agree, I use Mobil 1 on everything including my Snowblower
Rusty Zipper. Hi Rusty Zipper...I also use true fuel in all my 2 cycle equip..haven't had any fuel related problems...and there's your dinner...lol... Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸
The seal sounds made me laugh every single time. Awesome video Taryl, thanks!
I just bought one of these 21hp vanguards. Popping and surging. Only had 200 hrs. Guy said he kept oil clean surly it’s not a bad lobe. New plugs same thing.
Hi do you have something on taking out stuck bolts on alum kohler heads?
Very Inspiring! We have a lotta small engines that need fixin around here. We watch closely for your great tips! New subscriber!
I would love to see you do a video about recommend oils for different engines. I may be wrong, but I dont think people realize that these cams and tappets depend on zinc, but the oils you buy at parts stores usually have a lot less zinc because of catalytic converters.
I run Rotella for that reason
I always run oil......🐈
Good point. I use Kawasaki full synthetic 15 w 50 with Zinc in both my Kawasaki V 22 and my hydro drives for that reason. Just got to be careful with anything with a catalytic converter.
Mine is a 24 hp And the camshaft looked good I still have it apart I cannot figure out where the compression release is it was entirely too hard to start that’s why the teardown
Taryl, I was a mechanic for about 50 years, and a drag racer for over 40 years. Just saying I a know a bit aboutr this kinda stuff.. Anyway What we used to do with seals (arf, arf, arf). Before we installed them we would pack the inside with grease, so when you tapped them in the spring DID NOT pop out. Never had a seal (arf, arf, arf, spring pop out.
Hi can you tell me if a coil from a still 070 fit a 08s please thanks
Great success! I have a V-Twin Intek that hopefully won't need this repair, but if it does, I know what to do now. Thanks, Taryl!
How's it been reliable since?
@@JohnDoe_88 Just mowed almost an acre with it yesterday. Still works great!
@@engineer2001 well sounds good to me since someone just responded to me from Craigslist to line up the buying that mower engine. It's in a yardman by mtd 42" I just got a new almost an acre property so I could use it
Hahaha great video guys. Nice camera work!!!
Taryl .I love your videos & the knowledge you have. 😆😆👌
I kinda like the sound. I would modify the exhaust a little.
👇
🍝
I got 1 for ya Buddy. The. I 1050.…. drive belt..scub kadedt
It would be really helpful to have a list of parts needed in the description, not necessarily part numbers or where you got them but a simplified list like which gaskets and stuff. Your videos are awesome. Thank you for your help.
Hey Tara always awesome awesome videos I learned so much from you but just food for thought when I take something apart everybody's got a camera on your phone take pictures along the way before you take it apart and dooring how things go maybe you can pass it on then always seems to work for me thank you keep it up the good work
I take a electric ingraver and put a line around cover to keep gasket from moving later on
24:24 ... "I'm holding everything at one time, I'm holding the nut, that's how you control the Government!" Uncle Andy is just one of the Genius in the family. It take genius to come up with such witty unscripted impromptu remarks like that. lol
You're an amazing individual, keep up the good work.
you should put a pipe cap on that pvc, just makes it easier to hit with the hammer.
I’ve had two of these things & I HATE them! They always have problems when I’ve got them in free tractors. The valve on mine has a big gap, where the pushrod was falling off the rocker, I figured it out when I was doing a valve job, cuz I couldn’t turn it over & I had to do one that needed it too.
I hope it’s not, but if it is the cam it’s going in the trash cuz I got the tractor for free.
love your videos! super helpful also great to see people have a good since of humor while educating people. keep up the great work👍🤓
i do have an issue with a 15 hp kohler it won’t start and it has a popping sound coming through the carburetor.i think the camshaft is bad because i’ve changed the head and all other possibilities all is left is the cam.do you have a video on this problem or some advice? would greatly appreciate it thanks
Taryl any idea how many hours or seasons of NOT changing oil it took to cause the cam wear ?
Great job Sir !
Fantastic video, nice to see the guts of the V-Twin. For the seal I'd use my Simatool Fitting tool FT33. Makes for professional mounting of bearings and radial shaft seals.
I hauled a government load with instructions of, "DON'T STOP!". I had a 2 car escort. Unloaded at a military base and several marines with guards unloaded...lawn mowers??? Evidently they were going to the moon or someplace. You do my "it's fixed" dance!
Hey Taryl. Could you please make a short video on how you get the aluminum covers clean of gasket material. I waste a lot of time on this. I've tried spray on gasket removers (worthless) , plastic scrapers, and various metal scrapers. None very effective. Because it's aluminum I'm weary to use 3M scotch brite type pads or other abrasive disks on my drill.
Thanks
I use a brass wire brush . Never had a problem...
👍”....we’re not goin’ to the 🌙 moon!”
🤣🤣🤣
This guy has forgotten more than I’ve ever known about engines! 👀
👍Awesome video👍
and thanks to uncle Andy, I can NOW finish my time travel thesis 🤓
Thx Uncle Andy👍
Boy you have that engine puuuurrring Great video as always keep them coming.
Daryl and Junior enjoy your videos they make me laugh but the mechanic skills the top notch. Have you ever had an Intek engine that the governor pin come out of the block? Is there a repair for this problem? Might be a great video!!!!
Taryl not Daryl damn voice recognition
Taryl, Do you think adding a zinc substitute to your riding mower' oil would prevent this from happening?
Like You need to for old car engines, they have a zinc substitutes.. IDK, let's hear Your thoughts..
This video fits the bill. I've got one of these and just finished repainting everything...holy cow what a chore and still waiting on my deck parts to come in.
Hey Darrell..do u monitor this channel? I got a question. On your least fav motor...Kohler
"I like the way you talk" Good show Taryl, good information.
00:06 What's the name of that country song they usually feature in the videos? 😂
UFOENGINE The Grass Rats theme song!
It deserves its own upload I think 😂
Would a worn cam cause the exhaust pipe to glow as well or just a leaky exhaust valve?
Too funny one of the commercials was for a toothbrush! Makes you wonder if Big Brother has a sense of humor!
Love your videos, thanks for them. Is there anything else that can cause that popping sound if the lifters seem fine. 22 hp
noticed that there was no decompression release on the new cam shaft.......?
There actually is a compression release on the new cam....look again it's only about 0.10 of a contour on the lobe but its there.
You can actually hear it when he cranks it.
If it didn't the new low torque starter would allow the engine to kick back.
Ever set the valves wrong on a 5hp briggs?
It will literally sprain your wrist and cause tendon damage in your hand when you pull start it.
I think the cam lobe got wiped out because of the use of modern engine oils that don’t have ZDDP. The ZDDP is an extreme pressure additive package that’s designed for flat tappet valvetrains. I’m sure that not changing the oil didn’t help, but the lack of ZDDP is what killed it. We have these same issues with our collector cars from the 60’s. You need to use an oil that has zinc and phosphorus. STP oil treatment also has it.
Or just no oil. Only people on BITOG and old 60s cars care about ZDDP
Im waiting for the video when taryll does work on the space shuttle...hello NASA???
I was gona swear that you were going to forget the oil pump drive shaft. I usually put the crankcase back together by spinning a loose drive pulley until the pump shaft drops in. However it's safer for the gasket to do it the way that you show in the video.
This my go to guy. He ain't got no quit in him
