- Here is the 3rd installment of Taryl's 5-part month-long October Halloween Fright Fest! In "Night Of The Living Hillbillies", Taryl and Jr are handling a dangerous drum when it leaks out and infects a customer. Check out the beginning and end for the complete story on that. Sandwiched in the middle is Taryl showing you what to look for and how to repair a single cylinder Briggs and Stratton throttle control that's not working. The engine runs wild and wide open almost as if to display a governor problem. Don't worry, Taryl's got ya covered! And as always, There's Your Dinner!

Been watching your channel for over a year, learned a lot and laughed a lot too. Since you saved that customer so much on his repair I hope you sold him a new left front tire that thing was wore out. And there's your dinner! Much success and best wishes to you all

I actually have that small screw tool but thanks to your video I now know what it’s used for. Thanks!
G'day from Australia Taryl i'm wishing i had seen this video ages ago, i had a briggs 12.5 OHV mower runaway today and i thought i heard pounding in the cylinder, i'll have to go back and watch your early videos to see what else i could have learned.
removed the head and found one screw embedded in the piston and the head and piston crown looks like mince meat.
the butterfly was bent, so i'm switching in a spare, bore looks ok, so i cleaned up the head and sanded it in on 3/4" glass , fingers crossed.
Some great Halloween time videos. I love it. Cool to see the little zombies having fun too! Nice info on the butterfly flying up into the head. Never saw that before. Thanks Guys!
Awesome as always - this gives me the motivation to play in the garage with the boy
I had the same problem this summer for a customers machine. No sign of the screws either. great videos!!

Holy smokes. Thats pretty crazy! Never seen that before. Lol butterfly coming of and making it all the way to the head. Wow. Lol wonder if they weren’t made with lock washers or too weak of thread lock. Thanks for the video!
Bravo! What a great episode
BTW, I am rebuilding a Craftsman 917.273180 mower deck. It sucks. But your videos saved my ass.

That was a great one brother, very cool mini's, Cheers The Dizz.
Another awesome vid Taryl... :)
had same problem, but the shaft was broken, motor revved at 5860 rpm with deck engaged, mower on nitro, pulled motor thinking it was that decompressor cam, wasn't till i put the sump back on that I noticed that throttle linkage hanging out, that part was more expensive than the sump gasket!
Another awesome video guys!!! Just love it!!!
One of my top 10 vave-or-right movies.
Oh man...the ending was too funny.
Great video as always!
thanks Taryl and crew!

i love you guys funny vids taryl your the greatest phil
Thanks for great video. I had exactly this problem. One day it just suddenly spat and then started running very fast. I followed your video. Found the loose butterfly. Removed the butterfly. Had to use a coin to replace it. Drilled two holes. It fits well. But I still have the engine running fast as if there is no throttle control. Any ideas ?
I had this happen 2 summers ago. I thought it was the government too. I took the thing apart and the government was fine. Then I thought of the throttle and sure enough, the screws and throttle plate were gone. I couldn't fine new screws anywhere. I ended up buying a new carbonator off the enterscreen. One of the screws was imbedded in the top of the piston.
I totally love the skit
Not a lot of work in the shop? Then get the shop squared away and take inventory. Great repair videos love them. My boss would have us under hack if we did that..
Where did the screws go ?
Wait till Tayrl gets Dolby Vision...HAHA!!.
HAHA awesome vid guys and that throttle plate falling off is too much. wont happen again. Cheers !!
Not a fan of the goofiness, but once you got to the substance, it was very helpful. Tnx.
Can you do a video on the same model engine but why it's not getting fule. I have a 102 John Deere with the same motor and the fule filter has gas in it but won't go to the motor consistently
Hey Taryl, have you worked on the Stirling heat engine, 1st patent 1816? it is making a come back, Nasa had a pickup converted with a Stirling, 30+ years ago. thanks. :)
As always grade A entertainment and knowledge visually expressed. As those londummers say " You sir" are a genius
Y was it missing at idle
Good job as always. Thanks
all i could think is holy shit this is amazing
Rubbing the loctite tip on metal screw might make it harden on the tip of the bottle. Thanks, Taryl.
great video
great job
Did you find the two missing Butterfly screws???
Another good'en just right for Halloween !!
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Taryl, very instructive & hilarious to boot !
Serious Q: in a 500cc / 19 hp ish single cylinder tractor engine, do you prefer Briggs or Kohler ?
I'm looking at 2018 or 2019 42" tractors & can get either engine.
[B+S 500/540 Powerbuilt/Intek vs Kohler 541 - series 5400]
Thanks a ton for advising !
(Love to hear anyones experiences too)...David in Texas
Enjoy the videos. How much do you charge the customer for that. Actual time or ?
I put the motor back on, and still runs wide open. I have noticed that when I turn the motor on, the linkage gets pulled back to the idle screw, but still runs wide open. No control at all from the lever.
Slippers again.... I knew it! Thankfully you had an oar handy lol!!
Doesn't the bugger on the loctite come from rubbing the tip of the bottle on the metal screw, causing the loctite to react?
Its got a Burger on there !
Do you have any video how to do valve adjustment on briggs and stratton 18 hp opposed twin
Not enough clearance carefully grind a smidge off of valve stem . To much replace valves . (VALVE JOB)
you got good videos, had that happen ,got the old lawn mower for nuttin, i'm a GM mechani but they are good videos
Checked that and that's not the problem
I was hoping for some help, but I'm sure you're busy. I spent 2 hours and took the motor off the tractor. I opened the crankcase only to find out that the governor is fine.
What am I missing that would cause the motor to run wide open, and not being able to use the control lever to slow it down?
Is it just a mater of adjusting the governor spring?
I have a carb question for you. I have a 9 HP Briggs Vanguard with a Mikuni carb on it that the engine runs smooth at half choke and sputters with choke off. I have worked on many carbs and know what I am doing for the most part. I have soaked it in Hydro seal and blown everything clear as far as I can see. Pulled the 3 jets and made sure they were clear as well and blew out all the passages I could get to. It still does the same thing. I have read online that once these Mikuni carbs screw up like this, it's time to replace it. I know it has to have a blocked port or passage somewhere in the carb. There is what appears to be a plug (not a welch plug) on the top of the body. Can I remove that and clean in there as well. Your thoughts and input here would be really appreciated. Mark
Funniest one yet! Loved it!
I also replace the spark plug to
I drove the tractor in the garage and the control lever (speed) was working fine. I adjusted the governor properly. It was only a hair off. The carburetor is working fine, and the valves are set right. The motor always starts fine, but now it stay in wide open throttle at high rpm and control lever doesn't work just like in this video. When motor is off, I can see the control lever working fine................ Any idea why the control lever would stop working just like that?
What is the plug on the bottom of the carb bowl for? I have the same thing on my carb. If I wanted to clean my bowl, how do I get it off?
Taryl, I have a old String brush cutter with a B&S 6hp (122K02-007-E1) that is acting like it is Hydro-Locked, but when I pull the plug and pull it through, no oil comes out. No oil comes out of the muffler either. It is very hard to pull through with the plug in, but easy with the plug out. I pulled the head to see if there was a puddle of oil, no puddle of oil, the piston is able to go up and down, the valves open and close fine. I pulled the fly wheel to check the key, it is fine. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Remember, Slippers is still under the ground ! Hope Tazza and Junior dug him back out.Excellent! I bet the local kids enjoyed being a zombie, great to see them there having fun. Those teeth are Wicked, that close up of slippers scared the sh#t out of me, great make up...
I got a riding mower that's blowing oil up through the air filter. What do you say about that? You seem to know all about these machines..., HELP ME!!!
You guys are awesome 👍
Can you help me with my Greyhound engine it won't start I replaced the carb and ignition coil and had the Valves to
i have this same engine that is runnig wild like this the throttle plate is still on and the linkage is. hooked. i even tried another carb still revs wild what should i check
Now we know where Mr. 19 came from.
I replaced the carburetor ever since the to run it I have to keep it past the running position otherwise it will go off, can you tell me what can be the problem thanks
It is a 1998 murray riding lawn mower 17hp ovh motor
Anyone know if Taryl has a video of adjusting the carb????
