whats the part part number and where do you get the tool to remove the round pin's from the connecter and where would i get replacment pins. I have learned so much from your RUclips Channel videos to me is absolutely priceless! THANK YOU!
Out of the blue, my Brigs dropped a cylinder. Must be a shot coil right? Resistance was a bit low so I replaced the coil. No fix and now the "good" cylinder is acting up. Thanks Taryl for pointing me at the diode pack. Never thought of it. But knowing that I always enjoy your videos, I went looking and there you were with a very clear diagnosis. I did not find a reference to the diodes on any of the other small engine channels I checked. Thanks much!
I subbed because of this video. I've got a mower with a Briggs 20hp v-twin & to cut a long story short my issue was the diodes in the kill wire. Ordered some diodes online, made up a new kill wire & now mower is running like a dream. Thanks very much for making this video. Kind Regards from Ireland👍🏼
First time I read about those diodes! I probably lost two weekends on this!!!!! Now it’s got a rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, re-adjusted valve push rods, new battery, etc.... but... engine would not start even though I could see spark (I don’t have the right tool, so checking for spark with the plug out of the head). Glad you made this video! Very glad I found it too! :)
Thank you for this very well thought out and hands on demonstration video. I learned a lot from it. Never knew that these engines used diodes in the ignition system!
After improperly wiring my new solenoid I fried some ground wires (2004 Cub Cadet ZRT 50 w Briggs and Stratton 22HP Intek). I pulled my main wiring harness and repaired/replaced damaged wires but mower would only crank without starting. After a week of checking switches, fuses, coils, spark plugs, etc. and killing battery trying I finally caught this video. Taryl nailed it. THANK YOU TARYL!!!! I can mow until I get the kill wires fixed. You're a gentleman and a scholar, I owe you a 6 pack of Hamm's. P.S.-NICE RIP!
I know this video is 3 years old but it just helped me fix my Ferris mower with 28hp vanguard. It was a bad diode! Saved me so much time. I had been at it for 2.5 hours before I turned to RUclips.
Thanks Daryl, been working on mowers for many years and didn’t know this. Your the man. You’ve saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs to my mowers, thanks again.
Had this today....on a John Deere.... I didn't know there were those two diodes in the Kill system....but I noticed someone had removed "something" in the wiring.... Now...alles klaar! Thanks Taryl...you nailed it for me.
Thank you very much for your assistance in my briggs & Stratton V twin engine that has two Diles in it one day old was bad I traced it down myself but I also had a friend of mine check the diode‘s with a tester. Now the engine is doing it again it’s it’s shutting off while running and I think it’s somethings getting hot causing it to shut down. So after five or 10 minutes of waiting for it to cool off I can fire it back up again. Thank you and I’ll be keeping you on here. Thank you and God bless you and everyone in your family and everyone that works for you.
Hi Taryl. Greetings from England. You're a good teacher ! I especially liked the Diode= Checkvalve analogy describing an electronic component in Mechanics terms. Very Good. And thoroughly covering the repair description makes it clear. Well Done..
your channel has helped me so much, maintaining my own yard tractors, and keeping them running good, thank you. camera man is a sniper, knows where to point make it easy for me to understand, great job group.
Thanks for this video. A little story here. I have worked on engines all my life well about 55 years or more. Today was the first time I have trouble with a diode someone gave me a zero turn with a 16hp B & S twin he could not fix. Long story short he replaced the kill wire with one without diodes and this helped me fix this old mower. Thanks

Great Video Guys. I could have use that one a few years ago when I run into my first burnt Diode. Drove me crazy. I knew the Diodes were there just didn't understand how they functioned in the circuit, but knew what diodes did so with some study and some meter work finally figured it out. That's when I knew I needed two spark testers for the Briggs Balance test. Rock On
Taryl, you’re a genius. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us. We always learn something new every video you guys produce. Thank you for your service...👍👍👍
Just to clarify, a diode can fail either shorted, where it will read both directions, or it will fail open, meaning you would get no reading in either direction. No offense, taryl, just wanted to add this. Great video, brother.
*** SPARK TESTER NOTE - See Video: 13:11 I bought these exact spark testers (2), and while they work great, they are poorly made since the black heat shrink does not hold the glass tube tight, and that flashing element will soon break free. Great video and good explanation of how a diode works. i really enjoy watching your videos on how to fix problems with small engines, keep up the great work.
Taryl thanks! You helped me run to at least get the grass cut. Then, I watched the video a few more times to fix the diode issue on the weekend. TIP: If you can't find or don't have a terminal end tool you can just use a small screwdriver to bend two tabs all the way into the round part of the plug and pull the wire out.
YES! I spent some time today figuring out what you just explained on my 1996 20hp Briggs IC V-twin I'm resurrecting. Thanks for reminding me that the gad-frappin' solenoid'll starve it for fuel even if the kill wires are removed. I had forgotten that. I learned (and your video confirmed) that the bands on the diodes must be on the *coil* side of the kill wire harness, unlike another RUclipsr who had them the other way around in his schematic diagram, but came up with a good electrical solution in lieu of new diodes involving a DPDT switch with the coils on one end (electrically separate coil kill circuits controlled mechanically by a single switch) and the other ends of the switch wired together to the single harness kill wire in case your anti-after fire solenoid is buggered open, modded, or deleted. That way all your safety switches still work. A quick lookup says they're 1N4007 1000V 1watt diodes for anyone wanting to make their own harness. You explained their function better than you had to and the 'improper' wiring examples and their associated symptoms really drove the point home. Nice work, man!
Great video Taryl! I've been working on small engines since I was a teenager and I did not know this. I had an old Briggs opposed twin that was running on one cylinder and I bet this was the problem all along!
The opposed twin uses a single coil with two wires going to the plugs. It uses “wasted spark”, which means it fires both cylinders at the same time, one at TDC on the compression stroke, while the other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke.
I just bought a used snapper and it’s running intermittently on one cylinder. I just bought two new coils 😫. Hopefully it’s my problem. But if it isn’t I now know to check them stupid diodes. The previous owner had problems with the same thing costing two different shop bills at a cool 2800$. The one coil would shut it off if unplugged. The cap was so rusty I can’t believe the shop missed it and didn’t replace it. I replaced the cap and still running on one cylinder. Glad you explained the problems. I have a plan B now
New subscriber here. I think you have solved my problem with my Briggs & Stratton Twin cylinder. Thanks. I guess many people know how to fix things, but there are few who can explain it to others. Good job on the explaining.
Taryl Fixes All is above and beyond any other mechanics videos not just because his knowledge is endless but also because he makes it fun. Just one question do the twin cylinders engines like this one have the compression release or are they only on the single cylinder models?
Grandson (13) and I spent hours this winter Michigan) troubleshooting this problem. Fixed it. Then I disconnected the seat safety and did not realize that this switch was a grounding connector. WHAT? Yep. Try to jump the connector and it won't start.Hours and Hours finding this out. SO the best video ever!!
Thanks Taryl. I think that I have a bad diode on my B&S twin. Being an Ham Radio Operator I know how a diodes work. I accidently knocked one of the spark plug wires off it and it would not run at all but would run when it was replaced. Keep up the great videos.
You are one class act. I can be so down try to fix my mower and you have a way of sending me in the right direction and make me laugh at the same time. Keep it up you crazy brother. 😂
Coil either works or it doesn't? Well, not necessarily. I was a aviation support equipment electrician in the Navy. They taught me all about this stuff. Couple of years ago, i ran across a generator with a Honda clone that would barely run above a rough idle. After nearly pulling my hair out, as a last resort, i changed the coil. Voila! Original coil sorta worked. I never would have believed it if I hadn't experienced it first hand. So.....take nothing for granted.
The king of lawn mower repairs wondering if you have a racing lawn mower or a very special mower u been holding on to but you should show us how to build a racing lawn mower i like all your viedos keep it up bud
@Taryl Fixes All Is it true that if the diode failed that you should replace the coils because the coils likely caused the diode failure? And are the knock off coils at half the cost of OEM worth buying, or should one only purchase OEM coils? I'm dealing with this currently on a 2008 Intek 24hp Husqvarna tractor and not sure if I should replace just the diodes, or replace the coils as well.
> a coil either works or it doesn't That's not necessarily true. I have come across coils that will break down when they get hot and either quit working altogether or they're hit-and-miss. > if these diodes are bad, I get a reading both ways Also, not necessarily true. Diodes can short - meaning that you get a reading both ways - or they can open - meaning that you don't get a reading in either direction. In either case, they would be defective. As for the video... wow. I must admit it was hilarious! I feel the need to watch more of your antics... I mean, informational videos :)
Yep, coils will sometimes crap out when they get hot, let it cool down, and it runs again. And sometimes are intermittent, but either way, it is time for a new coil.
Hey that there's the Brothers Gross at the end! They're rockers! Loved the video. Always wondered if the engine would still run with the kill wire removed, so I would know if the coil was bad, or something was cutting off spark (like one of those pesky safety switches). Thanks for the valuable troubleshooting tip!
DIODE SPECIFICATIONS Those diodes look like 1N4007 and are rated at 1 AMP / 1000 Volts They can be found for about $2 for 100, enough to pass on to your children! (insert laugh track). - - - Very cheap part. Be AWARE when you replace them, they MUST be oriented correctly. One end of the Diode has a ring around it. Keep them oriented properly when you replace them. These little guys basically isolate the coils from each other, as Taryl so masterfully explains. Keep up the great work! And... Thanks for Thinking!
Good video on the diode. I have a older Snapper riding mower with a Briggs 14.5 hp that wouldn't charge the battery or turn on the lights. I traced it down to a diode in the wire that comes out of the alternator. Ordered a diode, it should fix my problem.
I have a question hope you can help. My 24 hp Briggs Endurance Engine on my Husqvarna z254 suddenly shut down when I was mowing. I had change the oil the day before and was running fine. I watched the video you posted on RUclips on the diodes and so anyway I pulled the spark plugs off and checked both and they have good spark on each so maybe a possibility of the gas filter? Please help if you can answer this problem. Many thanks, Mike
That's pretty cool , so if I had an intermediate circuit , that lost power while in use , I could hook a manual power to it through a diode , cause I can't have two hots connected ...am I thinking right ? No... what happens when the intermediate power jiggles back on ? ... thinking outloud & outside the box ..🤔
Great video (Billl and Teds Excellent adventure) Just so you know the stripe on the Diode is the the side that the current will flow tru. That is why that stripe is there.
@tarylfixesall, I’ve watched through all your related BS 20Hp Intel v-twin engine videos… luv the content you produce to help folks! Question pls… my JD L120 with above described engine will run / cut, do all, but within a completely random amount of time, independent of outside temperature, the engine will lose 1 cylinder. At times you catch an undeniable whiff of un-burnt fuel when continuing to mow. Do those symptoms sound like any past troubleshooting experiences you can recall? Thank you.
Great video, i almost got mine fixed. Do you or anyone know if i can run the kill switch wire directly to the ignition?(5 pin). The wire dead ends to nowhere.
so assuming my diodes are bad and I'm only running on one cylinder. by unm plugging the kill switch and opting not to use it. will it then run both cylinders? as you can tell I know nothing about this. but, I am learning thanks to your vids!
I have a DR chipper that I got for free that has the 16 hp Vanguard twin cyl. Found out one coil was bad and part of the insulation on the kill wire was gone and it was grounding out. I went ahead and ordered two new coils and a kill wire and installed them. It started with starting fluid but did not stay running. So I tore the carbetrator apart and found it full of gunk and had a stuck needle valve. I now have the carbetrator apart and waiting for a new needle valve. Once that comes in everything will be cleaned and put back together and will move on to the next issue. My plan is to fix it a little at a time for a winter project then sell it.
Thanks for the video. The following is somewhat off-topic. Will a 20 hp briggs V twin coil fit a Briggs opposed twin? Are the flywheels the same diameter? Ebay has a new v twin coil for $20 and the opposed twin coil for about $60. My 19.5 hp opposed twin Briggs starts fine, has good power but pops, misfires and surges at all rpm especially at lower rpm. Choke use doesn't help the way it runs. Recent Walbro carb clean with new fuel pump diaphragm, new fuel filter, fuel tank clean, flywheel key is good, new spark plugs with both sparking, re-gapped coil, no intake leaks. I have not increased the diameter of the fixed low speed jet. I looked through a lot of the 284 comments but did not find one like this.
Forget the above - I just realized my confusion. Ebay has an opposed twin coil listed as for a V twin. Of course the V twin has TWO coils! duh! Since an opposed twin has one coil I guess it has no diodes.
Can you tell me is there different size batteries for riders I have an old Roper Onan battery terminals are massive will a regular battery work thanks great video bro

Many thanks, Mike
best explanation on diodes , your the bomb TARYL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1000 likes from me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am FULL
Can you show more interaction with old iron engine.enjoy your videos and information on u tube.thanks Tim..
Thanks Taryl ...for my sunday night infotainment!!
Grest all around 🔧 and 🎭. Thanks
That's right the crap is my dinner.. thanks for keeping it real Terrell.
Tarry's funny, even when he is trying to explain things! Good info as well.
Thanks for lessons 😅. Vary helpful
Great video (Billl and Teds Excellent adventure) Just so you know the stripe on the Diode is the the side that the current will flow tru. That is why that stripe is there.
And one other thing Believe it or not they teach it that the current flows from negative to positive in most Tech schools
Tom FXSTC technically it does flow from negative to positive.
Yeah I guess that was funny Class of 1984 so I have no idea what there teaching now.
Gene Friedman shows what you know! In 1984 I saw plenty of women's hair that defied the law of gravity.
Thank you.
drj Westfield Wisconsin if you have D C current why do you need a diode? Thank you for your time
Happy Mothers Day from Athens GA
Is there a complete coil harness with diodes already installed available?
Hey Taryl i got a honda gx 620 vtwin, does it have diodes ? And if so do you have a part number for these diode wire harness
Great info ,keep rocking it out guys
Great video, i almost got mine fixed. Do you or anyone know if i can run the kill switch wire directly to the ignition?(5 pin). The wire dead ends to nowhere.
so assuming my diodes are bad and I'm only running on one cylinder. by unm plugging the kill switch and opting not to use it. will it then run both cylinders? as you can tell I know nothing about this. but, I am learning thanks to your vids!
The Carbentrator on this V-Tek is the same as mine that I need to replace... But Cannot Find it even from Brake n Scrapm.
I Need Your HELP!!!
Rather than buying the Briggs replacement diode harness do you know what generic diode part number would be a suitable replacement for a bad diode?
1N4001 diodes
You are the best Taryl
Can you tell me is there different size batteries for riders I have an old Roper Onan battery terminals are massive will a regular battery work thanks great video bro
