    Very informative.
Never were truer words spoken... Everyone has a favorite tip that they use all the time and the fact that holes wear over time and get bigger n bigger and bigger.
On a more serious note. It would seem to me that the majority of people's issues can be traced to the quality of their water supply.. And this video affirms that belief. We must develop a way to clean the inside of the pumps without having to open them.. I'm thinking soap, vinegar and something coarse in a loop for a few minutes along with a soak of hot RO water. Any suggestions?
Otherwise planned obsolescence wins. Can't have that.

You covered the basics, but not all of them, the lack of pressure could also be because the water supply has low pressure such as from a well with a small pump and tank (not city water) I noticed that when using mine at my sons home across the road from me. My pressure washer works great at my place but I seem to run out of water at his place when the water pump at the well has a low water level in the tank. You need to wait for the pump and tank to catch up so it can supply the pressure washer. The other could be that there is a kink in the garden hose

I have a Generac Model 01537-1 (Honda engine) This thing has me baffled... The only way I can get it to go to high pressure is almost stall it by choke and release choke quickly and it will kick on... Then when I release the trigger on the wand and pull the trigger again it will not go to high pressure.. Got to go through the same steps. what do you think?

  • @MrSebesta
    @MrSebesta 2 года назад +9

Hey Steve. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to help people out! You do a great job at teaching in a very basic way with clarity and easy to comprehend steps! I wanted to add that in the case of no pressure build-up when running, the unloader valve pintle/shaft may be stuck in the (spring) compressed position, thereby unseating the check ball, not allowing the pressure to build because it's bypassing the restrictor. The opposite can occur if the pintle is stuck in the extended position to where the spring is always decompressed, thereby not allowing any water to bypass the spring tension. In that case, the pressure washer will always put out high pressure and worse off the pump will always be "loaded" which makes the engine very hard to start if the water is on and attached to the pressure washer. I've actually narrowed this problem down by removing the water hose and then pull the rope and immediately the engine is able to rotate/start, as long as there is no water attached. Obviously, this is only to be done as a quick diagnosis, NOT to be ran more than a few seconds with no water attached. I hope that I explained all that clearly. Maybe you disagree but I just wanted to mention these things because I've experienced both scenarios. Either way, thank you for doing what you do to help people!

Is there a video on more in depth pressure pump diagnosis and/or repair?
Would love to see a few different pumps in pieces and what is likely to fail in an actually worn out, broken or dry run pump, which ones are worth repairing and which ones are better off being replaced.
I have a few salvaged ones and although the really big ones are worth a fortune and almost certainly worth repair, it's hard to know how far to chase for parts and when to cut losses!
    Cheers Steveo!

    Steve,
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. My pressure washer stopped making pressure as I was using it. I had just bought new tips so I never thought to check the orifices. When I did, thanks to your video, I found that two of the four new tips were blocked. After clearing the blockages, I checked the water pathway step by step - entry, exit, hose, wand, and tip. I then fired up the pressure washer, and it worked like a champ. Checking the tips seems obvious now, but given that I had just bought new ones, I didn’t think of it. Your video helped me to see the light, literally! Thanks again.

My problem is I got a new Simpson Water Blaster (belt driven), 4,200 Psi @ 4 GPM. I put a test gauge on it between the hose and gun inlet. The unloader is turned all the way up, and the gauge only reads 2,900-3,000 Psi operating pressure when I’m on the trigger (all nozzles, 0, 15, 25 read about the same), when I release the trigger pressure spikes back up to 4,000-4,200, it’s never consistent….it might spike to 4,200 but will then slowly drop down to 4,000 or right below that. I know that what should happen is the operating pressure should be 4,000-4,200 when on the trigger, with a 300-500 psi spike when I let off…but that’s not happening and I don’t know why.

Pretty sure the unloader valve is bad on mine I am getting drove nuts by pressure settling at 4200 PSI when I let go of the of the trigger when I pull the trigger with the 0° nozzle on pressure drops all the way to 2600 PSI give or take it's a 3600 psi rated machine. Ruled out being a low supply pressure because my outdoor faucets are all unregulated and I get 140+ PSI at all of them (I have to use reinforced hoses for my garden hoses). All of my other pressure washers produce pressure at what they're rated for I have ruled out everything but the unloader on this one waiting on a new one now.

As usual your video is the most direct and straightforward approach based on a reasonable & logical progression to obtain a satisfactory resolution. The easy manner and understandable narration keeps the listener/viewer from getting lost in the weeds. Remarkably simple machines in so many ways yet they can perplex a mechanic who is too self-assured to look for the obvious solution. Your method is the best. You take the viewer into the mechanics of the repair without over complicating the process. Superb video once again. Thank You

Hi Steve, I have a pressure washer with a Honda GX160 engine and CAT Pump (model 2SFX30GS). The engine usually starts in 1 pull and it seems to run fine. I get good pressure from the gun, but the engine only runs for around 30 seconds, then sputters and dies. After starting, I can operate the gun for less than 1 minute before the engine stalls. If I release the trigger before the 30 seconds, sometimes the engine would sputter and dies. Basically, the engine dies randomly when the pressure washer is operating, and also sometimes dies when the gun trigger is either pressed down or released.
At first, I thought it was the engine. I disassembled the carburetor and cleaned the jets. I didn't see any worn parts inside. I also changed the gas tank fuel filter, swapped the gas tank cap with a known good one to rule out venting issues, and unplugged the engine-oil sensor to test. The problem persisted. I then swapped the entire carburetor with a working one from another GX160 engine, and still have the problem. At this point, I speculated it was unlikely the engine. I disassembled the unloader valve and didn't see much wear, and the plunger moved freely without problems. I lubed the seals on the unloader valve with a tiny bit of silicone paste, and the plunger with a small bit of light oil and reassembled, and experienced the same problem afterward. The times the engine didn't die when I release the gun trigger, I see the unloader-valve spring being compressed.
At this point, I'm completely stumped. The pressure washer was working fine last year before I winterized it. What do you think is causing this problem? Is there some malfunction in the CAT pump that can cause the engine to stall when the trigger is down and the gun spraying (i.e., no water bypass)?

I cannot adjust the stream now so I am thinking they have something to do with that. Also there are U clamps holding the nozzle to extension rod, one on outer yellow section and one on inner black section. I can’t get the extension to move from nozzle to adjust pressure, seems like it is stuck on high setting. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Steve
Could you do a video on rebuilding a unloader. Mine leaks from underneath my pressure adjustment knob. I have replaced the o rings with no luck.
    Thanks Bob

Steve: I have a 3700 PSI pressure washer and had to replace the 6 check valves on the pump last summer due to loss of pressure. I used it about 3 hours since then, and it just lost pressure again. I pulled the pump apart and found all 6 valves are trashed! There were pieces of plastic all through the housing. What would cause all 6 new check valves to disintegrate?

    • @dustinmeier9753
      @dustinmeier9753 3 года назад

Garbage in your water supply, or more likely, high chlorine in your water supply eating the plastic. They put all kinds of nasty chemicals into the water we're supposed to drink.

@@dustinmeier9753 Turned out to be a thermal/pressure relief valve that was not releasing excess pressure. Changed that along with the new check valves and works great. The pressure relief valve pisses when too much pressure builds up.

Question, I have a briggs 6.5 verticle shaft motor on my pressure washer, the motor locked up a week ago and I replaced the 6.5 Briggs with what I thought was an identical motor. I hooked it all up and the washer doesn't have full pressure. I got the old motor running long enough to hook it up again, son ran it out of oil because the oil cap came loose and he didn't notice. loosened up the piston and ran it for a little while, the pressure was back to normal on the pump, its a horizontal pump on the bottom of the vertical shaft motor. Is it possible I need to change the carb on the new motor so it will kick up and keep the pressure up on the washer? I can't just run the old motor, I'm not sure how long it will be before it locks up again, probably when I get it nice and hot. Anyway, do you have any recommendations or suggestions on what might be going on with my new motor? It was off of a snow blower but otherwise its the same motor, I did change the filter on the carb to the old one because the other motor only had the non filtered box. Thanks

I know this video is 4years old so you may not see the comment. Did everything you said, used the beer method and the rum and coke method.
Didn't work. My problem is that it spits and sputters and sometimes when you pull the lever the engine shuts off.
With the wand off it works ok with lots if water coming out.
Cleaned out all the lines and nozzles, even took those 2 tiny things out of the top of the pump.
Everything is as clear as vodka.
But it is still sputtering and surging, and sometimes you have to pull the trigger on the wand and kind of diddle with it to stop the engine from shutting off.
    Engine works perfectly

Can't figure mine out. No pressure with engine running. Motor tone never changes. Just took the unloader spring out (verticle pump) and freed up the plunger. Put back together and same issue. Spring wasn't broken or rusted at all. Stumped

The wire from a wire brush works really well also. It will work for cleaning those small carburetor jets too. Just use a pair of pliers and pluck it from the brush.

Tanks for the instructions, you are very clear but you don't explain how to work on the pump on your right on your bench. Tha's the one I have and when I pull the trigger the engine loses power. I don't know if the problem is the pump or the engine itself. I will appreciate if you talk about this problem. Have a good day..

Is the pump shot if you have a small stream coming out and the hand trigger is doing nothing. Or does that mean the pump is no good. If so can the pump be fixed. It has been ran quite a bit without water hooked up. It is a mitsubishi 600.

On my last wash, mine worked fine, stopped to speak to someone, then it took a short period for the pressure to come back.
The next day i tried again & same thing, it took a short time & pressured up. Once it does it's good, till it sits off for a while. Any ideas ?
