Can’t speak for everyone, but as a black dude in his mid-40s from NYC, this movie is a classic. I’ve never heard anyone in the hood have a problem with this movie, cause RDJ’s not making fun of us, he’s making fun of the actors that take these kinds of roles. We’re in on the joke, we’re not the punchline. That’s why the actual black actor’s there, to say “aha see? We know this is ridiculous & we’re calling it out in the movie”. It’s fine to laugh at funny shit without worrying if it’s “problematic”. Black people are smart enough to know when we’re actually being insulted. This wasn’t it. Even black comedians I’ve heard on the topic, also commend RDJ for this role. Jamie Foxx, Deon Cole, etc. This movie’s one of the highlights of RDJ’s career, not a negative. He killed this role.
Thanks for your comment and for watching with us. We enjoyed the film a lot, as you can see in the video. As a number of other folks pointed out, the film is problematic in purpose, and it's a part of why it's fun. I'm glad you had a good time with our video. 😁
It's hilarious to me to see the younger crowd look visually uncomfortable with RDJ's role when I remember the entire theater erupting with laughter at the time.
As a black person, there is nothing wrong with RDJ’s “blackface” he’s not doing it, his character had the pigment procedure and the whole point is he’s making fun of actors that go to far
RDJ is pretty universally praised for his performance here. It's generally acknowledged that the performance is a clear mockery of the lines "method" actors will cross without thinking about it, and the absurdity that they engage in.
Precisely. There is a scene in "Kramer vs. Kramer" where elevator doors open, and Meryl Streep's character is supposed to look devastated. To "help" her, Dustin Hoffman has been reported to have slapped her across the face without warning, right before the doors opened. This was brought up during the height of #metoo, but nothing came of it.
There's no need to be uncomfortable watching this movie. I don't know a single black person, myself included, that was offended by RDJ's performance. I think it's one of his best roles ever.
A concept pushed by billionaires like Murdoch and Trump, in fact responding to Trump George Clooney reminded him that he grew up selling books and buying a suit one size too large so he could cut off material to make a tie where as Trump grew up with a silver spoon and takes his dumps on a gold toilet... seriously stop getting sucked in by far right media.

The blackface in this movie isn't offensive, because black people aren't the butt of the joke. Historically, blackface was used to show black people as stupid and uncivilized; here, it's being used to show how dumb extreme method acting is. And this movie absolutely could be made today. Robert doesn’t get any hate for this movie. The movie pokes fun at actors who method act LIKE RDJs character. Honestly, Ben got way more hate for doing simple Jack. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE loves Robert in this movie.
"Abby.exe is not responding" was brilliant. Good on you both for expanding your horizons! This was the high water mark of "absurd" comedy, where nothing was off limits. Hopefully we can get back there someday.
Love it. This is the best satirical comedy ever made. It puts Hollywood on complete blast mocking the crooked/cruel producers/studios, rampant drug use, how minority actors get screwed over, and how out-of-touch/insecure actors generally are among other aspects of Hollywood life. Absolutely fantastic.
The entire point of him doing black face is a commentary on why its bad to do black face. Just like there are several other critiques on the movie industry.
He was an actor doing blackface within the fictional context of the movie. It's making fun of and mocking blackface. And it is funny as hell. You guys are good reactors and it's fun to watch! Don't worry too much!
I chew on the "Simple Jack" stuff more, and debate with myself about that. But I suspect it could be viewed the same kind of taking the piss out of Hollywood. But that's a tougher sell to me at this point I guess. Unrelated note: I love your guys' fashion and am realizing what an old ass I am because the 90s are back in style and it looks cool as hell.
And Black folks gave it a pass cause they're smart enough to know - the real Black man in the movie sets him straight, calls out his racism to his face. He doesn't 'get away' with it.
@@Sirala6 Black folk give it a pass because his character is a badass Black Sargent that isn't there to make Black people look like a under developed race of savage/clowns like old Blackface portrays in the early 20th century tried to do. If anything the Black guy playing the Alpha Chino rapper who corrects him is a more bad stereotype street accent personality of a Black person. The real Black guy is the younger guy while Downy Jr's Black character and his vocal acting portrays the more mature Black character of a deep voiced Black Sargent leader. No one found it insulting because it wasn't meant to be, so all kinds of people were able to have fun with it without getting into race. I have seen more sensitive white people react more shocked/disturbed by the Blackface not knowing how to take it than most the Black people who i've seen watch the movie who just laughed too the comedy the Character and the movie.
Also I bursted out laughing @32:43-32:46. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I was like "I can't breathe I can't breathe." I couldn't breathe cause I was laughing so hard when he threw him and he went flying @32:43-32:46
Editor's note: I am curious at what point did you decide that the girls acted "offended" in the video? The video we published is one of two people thoroughly enjoying a movie.
@@HBC423😹 they're not offended, just shocked and uncomfortable. Those are glorious reaction moments you're pointing out. In an earlier response to a comment above, Abby compared it to watching The Office: it's uncomfortable and cringe, but fun. Not a single time during this video did they say they were offended.
Downey Jr. was nominated for an Oscar for this film. Greatest performance you'll ever see in a comedy. It seems more controversial in 2023 than 2008. However, the Academy Awards didn't have a problem with it. And rightfully so 👍
Ben Stiller came up with the concept for Tropic Thunder whilst he was on location during the filming of Empire of The Sun; in which he was playing Dainty. Tom Cruise had quite a lot of input into how ridiculous his character would be…..making the hands huge was done on his request.
When I first saw it in theaters, I couldn't breathe from laughing so hard several times 😂 This movie really deserves a place among the best comedies of all time
It's an incredible comedy for sure, but I wouldn't say it is the best ever written. Blazing Saddles is easily on par if not better written than Tropic Thunder. And was 30 or 40 years earlier.
This was an uncomfortable watch, but not because of the movie, because of your reaction. I mean this with the greatest of respect, but I don't think you got the intent of Simple Jack & RDJs "pigmentation procedure". It's mocking the Hollywood absurdity of casting and attitude as a whole. Take it from me, a disabled person - I don't get all worked up when I see an abled actor playing a disabled character. For better or worse, it's part of what the movie trade is, so take it for what it is. RDJ really didn't get any backlash - other than award nominations. Sometimes things aren't what they seem, & taking immediate oppobrium isn't really necessary. Anyways, as I say, that's all said with a good heart, no offence intended.
Editor's note: I am curious at what point did you decide that the girls acted "worked up" in the video? The video we published is one of two people thoroughly enjoying a movie.
Not blackface. RDJ is playing a white guy (kirk lazerus) whos playing a black guy (sgt lincoln osiris). The part literally couldnt be played by a black guy.
Editor's note: The girls were reacting to the warning displayed at the beginning of the movie. It listed violence, language, and other stuff that you usually see, but this time the list also included "blackface."
Some amazing lines in the movie but: "I don't know what it's called, I only know the sound it makes when it takes a man's life,"is epic. Especially with the callback later.
Everyone makes this movie about "blackface". Please allow me to bring up others before this. Dan Aykroyd in "Trading Places". How about Eddie Murphy doing white face as a Jewish man in "Coming To America"? Blazing saddles blatantly exposing stupidity. It is comedy and parody. It is only negative or "racist" when people make it stupid or for their own purposes. PS racist is a stupid term there is only one race homeo-sapien. Everything else is an ethnicity based on geographical evolution. Hence Hitler was not racial cleansing but Ethnical Cleansing with his campaign. One race. A real racist would simply hate humans you know murderers and such. This will garner some hate but also hopefully raise some intelligence and conversation about the truth. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Editor's note: I am glad you had a great time with our video! But also, I am curious at what point did you decide that the girls acted "offended" in the reaction? The video we published is one of two people thoroughly enjoying a movie.
@@RuntotheMovies Hannah didn't seem to be offended by anything. She gets that it's just a comedy, but it did seem like her buddy was acting like she was offended. She should take a leaf out of hannah's book and just roll with the punches. Not to take things to heart. It's only comedy.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage exactly. This is just a RUclips video. Folks should learn to not take it to heart and be offended by someone with a different worldview. The number of people in these comments who are triggered by this reaction video is staggering. Like someone more eloquent than I said in an earlier comment, the Anti-SJW crowd are the real "snowflakes." Both Hannah and Abby enjoyed this movie a lot. They cringed, but had a great time. It was fun to film and fun to edit. The only part that's not been fun is having to police this comment section. The vitriol that idiots hurl in the direction of two of the most intelligent people I know is staggering. At no point in the filming did either Hannah or Abby act offended. They were shocked, which made for an excellent reaction video, and they were delighted to be right about it being Tom Cruise in the suit, but they weren't offended at any moment. The only folks offended are the keyboard warriors leaving mean comments on this video. I actually considered taking the video down, but decided against it. I'm not going to have a small number of imbeciles dictate what content we publish on our channel.
I can't believe it was the middle tooth that gave it away to Hannah that it was Tom Cruise. It was great watching it slowly unravel like how it was watching it in the theatre. Noone knew until the credits!
I saw this in the theater, and couldn't wait to buy the DVD - it's the only movie I've ever watched the commentary version. RDJ earned his Academy Award nomination.

This movie is hilarious girls. I saw it in real time inside the theaters. I don't know a black person that doesn't love this movie. I miss times like this when we could all just laugh. Everybody loves rdj - before and after this movie😆. My favorite part of this reaction was when you guys could not control your laughter at the most ridiculously funny moments. Thanks.

25:15 That is Tom Cruise. After his infamous interview with Oprah where he was acting weird, he got this role some time later and people seeing him in this role got him a lot of goodwill. Also coincidentally he based the character on Harvey Weinstein.
Hey Hannah and Abby, at first glance the black face, simple jack, is offensive. ------ In fact Ben Stiller is quite intentional with the portrayal of the various characters, they are held up as a reflection of Hollywood, actors and the movie studio establishment. -------- Letting us know that actors are not Gods, just people with a highly paid desired skills, with access to fame and fortune
True story, for a few years they were trying to put together a Les Grossman movie with Tom & Ben but just could never get it fully figured out. Personally, I would love to have seen that movie.
Tom Cruise reveal at 35:40 was so awkwardly hilarious for some reason 😂 Hannah: Yes! Oh my gosh it is! That’s amazing! Abby: He’s a Scientologist. Hannah: It took me… yeah he is… *Seinfeld music plays* 🤣
And the award for "Best Child Yeet" goes to... Tugg Speedman!" I have a couple of "issues" with this film. 1. If "the camera wasn't even rolling", how did Access Hollywood get the footage? 2. Kirk Lazarus sis not actually undergo "pigment alteration" surgery. It was a publicity stunt for the film. After his revelation at the end of the film, he becomes very white. Despite these, this is one of the best comedies ever made. Just brilliant. Is there anyone who wouldn't pay to see "Satan's Alley"?
You gotta love it when Hollywood makes fun of its self. All three of the main acrors nailed there roles! Hope to see Mortal Kombat 1995 version soon. As always my friends, great reaction 😊
thanks for joining us!!! let us know if you have any recommendations of what we should watch next (i haven’t seen most movies so you have a lot to work with ◡̈ )
I'm amazed there've been so many movie reaction youtubers who didn't instantly recognize Tom Cruise. The weird suit that gives him giant hands is insane. Other hilarious moments: - when Tugg throws his briefly "adopted" Asian son (his other one) off the bridge, there's a little kid version of a Wilhelm scream - Sandusky first asks Kirk Lazarus if he really dated Jennifer Love Hewitt and he said that was just media/tabloid speculation-she was the hot girl who was Sandusky's date to the Oscars
35:04 It's another guy. The guy from the Coen brothers is EtHan Coen, this guy is Etan CoHen. Yeah, it's confusing. And to add more confusion, the other Coen brother is Joel Coen, and there is another writer called Joel CoHen. He, among other things, wrote the live-action Garfield movie, which Bill Murray signed on to because he thought it was written by one of the Coen brothers.
Yes!! I am so here for this reaction everyone is awesome in this movie but my favorite is definjtley RDJ and Tom cruise "Survive" "peekaboo i see you!" "I'm the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude"😂Also Hannah with the Star Trek knowledge Captain Kirk baby!!
I was fine with the vulgarity, the crude humor, and even the portrayal of violence toward animals but I really think they crossed the line when Ben Stiller actually went whiteface. What is this the seventh century? 😉
One of the funniest modern movies ever! Before wokeness/ hypersensitivity ruined comedy! I love the intro, and the “Platoon” beginning when Ben stiller does the over the top gyrating bullet dance. Can speedman muh muh make audiences care??? Even the lesser “nerd” character is funny! Often overlooked, he gets handed the map for ONE SECOND- “we’re going the wrong waaaay!” Sees Tug Speedman enduring water torture: OH JESUS!!! You could get the Nickelodeon teen choice award 😍
They could get away with the muh-muh- moment because Mathew MacConehey used it affectionately in the same scene- “you make me happy!” And the whole RDJ playing a black character in a movie within a movie is fine, because there’s a real black guy in it to put him in his place 😉 it’s all about context! In Clerks2, Randall can say anything racist he wants to- as long as Dante is there to correct him- there are black characters there too. and the whole script is coming from one voice (Kevin Smith). Both sides of the Star Wars/ LOTR argument too- NERDS!!! 🤓

Funny, silly, ridiculous and stupid, shouldn't be told it's not ok. that's the point! just enjoy the adventure
The entire point of him doing black face is a commentary on why its bad to do black face. Just like there are several other critiques on the movie industry.
Get over yourself, not only does Robert Downey Jr. not get crap for this role, he was nominated for best supporting actor.😂
Unrelated note: I love your guys' fashion and am realizing what an old ass I am because the 90s are back in style and it looks cool as hell.
thank you for the outfit love! the 90s are back!!!!
Dont be uncomfortable. Nobody had a problem with it when it came out. People are needlessly offended about things that shouldnt

😂😂😂😂😂😂 I was like
"I can't breathe I can't breathe."
I couldn't breathe cause I was laughing so hard when he threw him and he went flying @32:43-32:46
The world needs more movies like this and Blazing Saddles to scare uptight people back into laughing.
Black people don’t need you to feel offended for them, none of them were offended by this
Editor's note: I am curious at what point did you decide that the girls acted "offended" in the video? The video we published is one of two people thoroughly enjoying a movie.
@@RuntotheMovies 4:25 to 4:32
@@HBC423😹 they're not offended, just shocked and uncomfortable. Those are glorious reaction moments you're pointing out. In an earlier response to a comment above, Abby compared it to watching The Office: it's uncomfortable and cringe, but fun.
Not a single time during this video did they say they were offended.
I waited for the "is that Tom Cruise?" moment and it was so worth it. Loved the reaction :)
😸
Downey Jr. was nominated for an Oscar for this film. Greatest performance you'll ever see in a comedy. It seems more controversial in 2023 than 2008. However, the Academy Awards didn't have a problem with it. And rightfully so 👍
i had no idea he was nominated for an Oscar! I would love to know who he was up against!
@@abbyygross Unfortunately he was up against Heath Ledger's Joker.
@@abbyygrossHe was runnerup to Heath Ledgers Joker. Its funny to think he almost won an oscar for this movie.
Hey Abby, your brain short circuiting from all the scenes are so Epic, hilarious and to die for.
Let's be clear. Blackface was not okay in 2008 either. That's the joke.
RDJ has gotten lots of praise for his performance in this movie actually since it shows the absurdity of blackface
Ben Stiller came up with the concept for Tropic Thunder whilst he was on location during the filming of Empire of The Sun; in which he was playing Dainty.
Tom Cruise had quite a lot of input into how ridiculous his character would be…..making the hands huge was done on his request.
Thanks so much for these tidbits!
I'm a dude playing a dude disguise another dude.
"" I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude .....""
I'm a rooster illusion.
This movie should have won an Oscar for Best Child Toss.
🤣🤣🤣
are there other good nominees?? the child frisbee was the best part of the movie lol
It is Hollywood however I doubt there will ever be a child tossing category 😂
the difference between generations is wild lmao. They will never know
The greatest comedy ever written, and that will NEVER be equaled! 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Saw it in the theatre and have rarely laughed so hard! :D
It's good but no Airplane!
Well said
Editor's note: I am curious at what point did you decide that the girls acted "worked up" in the video? The video we published is one of two people thoroughly enjoying a movie.
Robert Downey Jr is my favorite black actor
The looks of abject shock on your faces, once y'all recognized Tom Cruise...CLASSIC!!
😸
Not blackface. RDJ is playing a white guy (kirk lazerus) whos playing a black guy (sgt lincoln osiris). The part literally couldnt be played by a black guy.
Editor's note: The girls were reacting to the warning displayed at the beginning of the movie. It listed violence, language, and other stuff that you usually see, but this time the list also included "blackface."
fun fact at the mtv movie awards, tom cruise came out in full make up and did a live performance to the ludacris song. He even danced with Jlo.
@MyBuggalugga They don't have the full performance up that I could find. You can find like bits and pieces tho.
Some amazing lines in the movie but: "I don't know what it's called, I only know the sound it makes when it takes a man's life,"is epic. Especially with the callback later.
I need some dudes who speak AMERICAN Goddammit, cracked me up
"The universe is talking to us right now..."
-Les Grossman
"You?!!! You!!! Hit that director in the face... Really f*cking hard."
Epic!
The amount of quotable lines is insane in this gem of a movie.
A comedy satire masterpice, Ben Stiller is a real genius for direct this classic film.
Much love to you as well!
Hannah and Abby
Robert Downey Jr didn't get much backlash by being "Blackface", major taboo in entertainment or in anything else.
Lol @ the new girl being offended on the world's behalf throughout the movie. Great stuff. :)
So glad you enjoyed this video! 😸
I saw this in the theater, and couldn't wait to buy the DVD - it's the only movie I've ever watched the commentary version. RDJ earned his Academy Award nomination.
"You're gonna need a U.N. binding resolution from keeping me from fuking you up!!! " Tom Cruise is legend
He was amazing in this role!
@@RuntotheMovies fun fact, the look that McConaughey throws during that scene is legit because if I'm not too much mistaken in the script all been had written was Les freaks out
I remember watching this in theater. First thought ten minutes in was “oh they dgaf”. It was so funny
Tom cruise agreed to do the role of Les Grossman under the condition that he have giant hands 🤣 that was his only demand, giant hands.
And he wanted to dance too, not on the original script 😆
You saw all this "problematic" stuff in this movie? Yes? You're still here, right? Still alive, still able to function?
The world is still going around, life is still happening.
Just a little perspective on "problematic". You had a good laugh, and nobody died... well except for the director.
agreed, although it was an uncomfy watch It was kind of like watching The Office, made me cringe but also made me laugh!
"Never go full R" xD gets me every time
Tom Cruise dancing to "Low" is one of the greatest things to ever happen in history 😁

Thanks.
There absolutely were quite a few ridiculous funny moments. 😸 Thanks for watching with us!
Ahh I miss those day's were everyone could laugh together and have a good time.. Can't do that now tho.. someone might get offended!! :O
i love it when they laugh at the most "problematic" shit. totes adorbs!
Funny how the only people who ever get offended about controversial topics, are white people and college kids. Either this movie is one of the best comedies to come out, next to the other guys, forgetting sarah Marshall, and austin powers 2. Glad yall enjoyed it💪🏼
If they were uncomfortable with this wait until they get to the movie all RUclips reactors do: Blazing Saddles. They need everyone gathered for that.
I’ve been seeing a lot of people request this! I’ll watch if they yeet another child across the jungle 😂
25:15 That is Tom Cruise. After his infamous interview with Oprah where he was acting weird, he got this role some time later and people seeing him in this role got him a lot of goodwill. Also coincidentally he based the character on Harvey Weinstein.
Thanks for the background. Tom Cruise was amazing.
When i first read this I thought i missed an Oprah cameo too… man, that could have made the movie!
Tom Cruise rocked this cameo!!!!
He was the best!

True story, for a few years they were trying to put together a Les Grossman movie with Tom & Ben but just could never get it fully figured out. Personally, I would love to have seen that movie.
Maybe it'll still happen. It would be glorious!
Tom Cruise reveal at 35:40 was so awkwardly hilarious for some reason 😂
Hannah: Yes! Oh my gosh it is! That’s amazing!
Abby: He’s a Scientologist.
Hannah: It took me… yeah he is…

And the award for "Best Child Yeet" goes to... Tugg Speedman!"
I have a couple of "issues" with this film.
On point one, someone was probably filming the simultaneous "making of" documentary.
@@DavetheGrue possibly.
Would it be normal to have extra cameras filming to keep track of continuity, actor placements, etc?

This movie is HILARIOUS! I don't know any people of color that are offended by this. Downer and Cruise stole the movies. Lol
I'm amazed there've been so many movie reaction youtubers who didn't instantly recognize Tom Cruise. The weird suit that gives him giant hands is insane. Other hilarious moments:
- when Tugg throws his briefly "adopted" Asian son (his other one) off the bridge, there's a little kid version of a Wilhelm scream
- Sandusky first asks Kirk Lazarus if he really dated Jennifer Love Hewitt and he said that was just media/tabloid speculation-she was the hot girl who was Sandusky's date to the Oscars
This movie is indeed problematic. That's the joke. That's why its funny.
RDJ got a lot of praise from the black community, Ben Stiller got the opposite reaction for Simple Jack!!
It’s funny. Just laugh.
Now that the video is out, we are having a great time laughing at all the butthurt comments.
Thanks for the clarification! ♥️
@MyBuggalugga kirk fighting 'the Gorn' at that - classic over acting scene
The only thing that changed is people are soft now.
I was fine with the vulgarity, the crude humor, and even the portrayal of violence toward animals but I really think they crossed the line when Ben Stiller actually went whiteface. What is this the seventh century? 😉
15:08 - Didn’t you mean to say that Ben Stiller looks….Simple Jack’d ? 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
this made me laugh😂 good one WarriorPoet
Good point about the nerd character. Wasn't he an Eagle Scout in the movie? In that case, he'd be very good at map reading.
lesser known fact - the only "non famous" likeable guy is Jay Baruchel who voices Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon movies :)
Toms voice is so iconic, how can you miss it :)
It is a masterpiece of comedic-cinema!
This movie is a parody of Hollywood. Also platoon, apocalypse now, mission impossible, saving private Ryan, Indiana jones amongst others
Your reactions are amazing! Yes, quite non-PC. I love your YT thumbnail image! 😂😂😂
This movie poked fun at Hollywood the way "Blazing Saddles" poked fun at the nation at large, and I believe both did a great job.
“The kids stents dressing up as Tugg Speedman for Porum anymore”, is such an underrated line
"Need someone up here that speaks American" lmfao😂😂😂😂
Robert Downy Jr. was nominated for an Oscar for this movie.
