When you first said she was going to carry the baby back I thought there was NO way, he's almost as big as she is. She was persistent, and surprisingly smart and in the end...mama always gets her way.
I have a mama squirrel and a few baby squirrels that I feed on a daily and I think mama was pregnant but shes skinny now and like the same size as one of the babies
This is fantastic, such a treat to watch. When he was clinging to her head and she couldn't see to make the jump, I was dying laughing, and again when he was clinging for dear life to the deck railing, squirming out of being carried. So adorable. I'm so glad you recorded the whole ordeal. It was fascinating to watch.
Sometimes animals are so patient with their young. If it was me, I would have left him there, especially after all exhausting myself trying to save the baby.
This is SO adorable !!! The baby is almost as big as she is. I can't believe her persistence to make sure he's safe, and I love the end, "Squirrels can't count."
Thank you for sharing. I can just hear that momma fussing at her son. BUT that was a scary jump for such a small guy. I still remember the first time I dove into a pool head first. The water was soooo far away, even on a SMALL diving board!!
Thank you for posting this story. It is heart warming to see the love of a mother caring for her babies. You captured how intelligent squirrels are and their amazing tenacity to survive. I love squirrels. Im raising 3 of them now rescued from a dog.
Update: Haven't seen the little boy in three days. Got worried. So I pried a vent open on the roof, and saw him moving around in there. He just (understandably) isn't that interested in the outdoors right now. I added a vertical back grill to their porch (where you see Hannah almost fall at 6:17 ), so her kittens can climb back into the hole without falling in the future.

I couldn't wait to show hubby this INCREDIBLE footage. We have several squirrels here in Florida that we watch every day at our bird feeder and have come to love them and their quirky personalities. Thank you for sharing.
Incredible video. Thanks for sharing it. Poor traumatised baby, having fallen several times but what a clever and determined mother. She did everything she could to get her baby back to the safe nest and I was exhausted, just watching her mighty effort.
September 2017 update. Hannah moved out for the summer, as usual, and then came back by two weeks ago to move babies into the roof... But Hannah's daughter from 2015 had already claimed the nest, and has two babies in there. There was a lot of fussing between the two females, and then Hannah canceled the move-in.
Sounds like you have some more building to do! A Squirrel "Condo" in the works, maybe? :-) I'm thinking of building one next summer, so I can keep a better eye on them. Gets pretty cold up here in upstate New York,....don't ya know, so I'm thinking if I insulate it it well on the outside, I might try to have a small amount of my forced hot air heat get vented into the "Condo" :-) not a lot mind you, but on 15 degree F to below zero nights just enough to comfy it up a bit. The 12-15 squirrels in my backyard already get spoiled rotten, with pecan halves, almonds, green delicious apple pieces, carrots, snap peas, green beans, green peppers, broccoli, and other assorted fruits and treats from time to time. 3-4 of the squirrels will take the pecans (especially) from my hand, and one will stay to stuff his mouth with a second pecan!
amzing video. God bless you! i live in an apartment in NY and saw a mamma squirrel try to get one of her babies to jump from a rail onto a window, which was about 5 feet away, and then onto the fire escape to go up to the nest she built on the fire escape. i watched this sweet little baby try to jump several times after mamma coaxed him/her a zillion times!!!! the baby jumped and once fell right on the concrete steps below the fire escape. i averted my eyes...thought i was gonna die, because the poor thing fell about 8 feet down, but she/he made it. she/he was very very scared to jump onto the window again...but she did it..hung onto the brick walls as much as she could but then let go. I must say the mamma was Extremely patient in all of this. she came down several times during the day... it took ALL day for her to get the baby to jump to the window then to the fire escape, and then up the stairs to the nest. i cried at times watching this. if only "some" people are as caring as squirrels with their young!!! blessings to you and yours
Thank you for posting this video. I had no idea that momma squirrels were this caring for their offspring. Very touching to see her work so hard to save her baby. I know she must have been frustrated at some point (what mother hasn't been) when he latched on to four different branches. Then, she cuts away the branches. How clever is that? Awesome!

That was an amazing video. I just raised and released a little boy squirrel , Greyfur , early in May. He is in our woods and for the first 3 months I was still his "mama". He matured and he traded me out for a girl squirrel. I have a trail cam set up and see him every day. He has a girl now, Goldie, and I think she has babies. I just love watching them. I was the first thing Greyfur saw when he opened his eyes the day after he fell out of his nest at our barn. I became quite attached to the little guy with the round the clock feedings and his antics in our bathroom. One thing I learned about little baby squirrels...they love to whittle down anything they can clamp their teeth on LOL. I am happy to hear that you made some safety adjustments to the little nesting area. Also, I didn't know that little baby squirrels were called kittens...Keep the videos coming.

+BF. The next time you see a tree squirrel sitting in an upright position, take a good look at their upper thighs. Those thighs look fat but they are highly muscular.
What an awesome story thanks for sharing...love that you build a little porch for her to step on off the roof & and named her Hannah... such a beautiful name for a beautiful girl
Great video! What an adenture! I'm glad the baby wasn't hurt.
No ukuleles, no finger snaps, no godawful whistling. Thank you so much for this.
"No son of mine is gonna be a punk..." Mama Squirrel laying down the law
Poor Hannah! I bet she wanted to just strangle him by the time she got him home, but probably just opted for a well deserved nap. Good job, Hannah!
I think many mothers can relate...Motherhood is the toughest job that will make you something better or leave you in pieces.
Alison Miller ummm what about fathers?
Toughest job my ass! sewer cleaners, oil rig extractors and various other jobs r more dangerous and tough.
+Sanyu Singh Mma let me guess your the type of person that thinks if its not happening to me im fine with it arnt you -_-
Even though I am a father I was thinking the same thing! lol Are these squirrels always single parent families and if so what do the males do while all this is going on? Hey ,,Iv'e got internet maybe??? I'll just look it up!,,,He stuck in his thumb, and pulled out a plum and said "What a good boy am I?"
Alison Miller or both on meltdown days
I didn't mean to but I found myself watching the whole video. I love my squirrels too.. I think it's fabulous the way you care about them and how you let them have a part of your home. Thank you!
Thank you, Lee. That was fascinating! Grateful for the updates, too. Ah, Motherhood!
Most wonderful capture.... amazing mamma....how she persists in saving him...
Amazing...I hate when people say they have no "feelings" like humans...what was that then?? Excellent vid best thing I have seen in some time!!
Angel Bookman it's motherinstinct to save the life of their progeny
The do have feelings and they have more Love than the humans Gods creatures God is love
Every little child who ever had a dog or cat knows that all mammals have the same feelings but are just not capable of a complex language.
They don't have a human feeling.....they got Squirrel feelings
It’s humans who have no empathy.
This is amazing. Without your subtitles I wouldn't know what was going on but it all makes sense the way you explain it.
Terrific job of recording this, and a very touching story. Great job!
Wow I was so worried watching this. Poor baby was in distress. Mama is amazing the way she chopped down the branches. Pretty incredible you captured on camera. Thank you for sharing
This rescue had my heart in my mouth...it made me sweat like a farm animal.
Aww this is the cutest video! What a smart momma! Baby animals just like kids, need to trust their parents!
thx man for spending your time on this vid and caring for the little critters.
Nice to see👍
Baby Squirrel is saying "These trees are for the birds. I prefer to spend the rest of my life as a ground squirrel.
Most interesting squirrel footage I have ever seen. Well done!
moms do extreme hard work for their babies. love for all mamas.
She knows the dangers of hawks and other predators. What a good Mamma!
The selflessness and heroism, and muscular strength of those tiny animals are impressive.
Very interesting. I had my first experience with helping out a squirrel family the other week where two babies fell a good 40'+ (?).
Amazing wonderful footage. Thank you for sharing.
