She wouldn't eat them, it only happens to mammals when they are 100% sure the kids don't make it because of lack of resources and bad environment. Touching them probably didn't do anything, at worst they'd be rejected but not eaten

This man is the kindest soul, he has an unbelievably huge heart of pure gold and I love him for it!!! My squirrel used to hop and flip like that when he was playing and I have so many videos of him acting so silly and adorable. I love squirrels, they really are some of the most incredible little creatures, they have the personality of a puppy and a toddler mixed, and they are so funny, each with his own unique personality and temperament. They love to play wrestle, snuggle, and will need tons of attention, but they are so worth it. They dont make the best pets in the way of how much they jump on everything, chew everything, can be quite moody to people they dont trust and often will bite and hard too. But if you are their human, they are loyal, sweet, will even purr like a cat, only faster, and give you kisses!!! Stew, RIP I love you and miss you every day!!!

OK, I know you didn't ask but... one thing I've learned over the years of keeping animals in cages, be it mammals or reptiles, is the importance of smell in their lives. In the wild, many animals have a home territory with a number of places that can be used as dens, nests etc. They will regularly switch dens or nests to prevent any one becoming too unhygienic or overrun with pests and parasites. Also, if a female mammal has young, she will move them periodically to other dens to prevent their smell drawing predators to them. The mother will be familiar with all the dens and nest sites in her territory, and they may have a lingering trace of her scent in them, too.
When we keep animals in cages we kind of limit their territory size, and generally, there is space for just one den/nest. To prevent the cage getting too dirty we clean it out, but when we do that, we also remove any trace of the animal's smell in the area, and often place it with new and quite strong strange ones. Believe it or not, even snakes get upset if their home no longer smells like it did before. What I do is, when cleaning my snake's cage out, is keep about a scoopful of the old substrate back. I give it a good sift to remove any dust and other debris, then once the rest has been removed, the cage vacuumed to remove dust, washed and dried, and fresh wood chip substrate put back in, I sprinkle the reserved scoopful over the top. That way, whilst the cage might smell mostly strange, there is a bit of his scent left.. A similar thing can be done with mammals: keep a bit of the cage substrate and some of the bedding back to add once the cage has been cleaned.
I apologise if I'm telling you something you already know, but if not, perhaps it will prevent another squirrel panic in the future...

I just wanted to give you a little tip that might work. I raised rabbits for over 10 years. A trick we used for new or skittish moms when we had to check nest boxes was to put a little vanilla extract on their nose before you let her back in the nest. The vanilla makes it so that they can’t smell for a bit and, by the time they can smell again, their scent is in the nest. It works great! I hope it helps in the future! Also, another way to warm up kits quickly is to put them in your shirt. I’ve saved so many rabbit kits like this. Also when you get to the house with the kit in your shirt, put two towels in the dryer. Once they’re warm, pull one out and wrap the kit. Leave the other towel going in the dryer so that once the towel you’re using gets cold you have another towel already warm.

It’s just nature. A hedgehog also has fleas and a lot too. But next time: never ever destroy the nest. How sad it is to watch the death of a animal, that is the way nature controls the population of species. It’s cruel that I say that but as a vet’s assistant and worker on a animal ambulance I see a lot of people that call for “abandoned” young animals and see how they tried to place a young bird back into the nest etc. My advice: never touch a young animal unless it’s hurt or really is out of it’s place.
But I want to thank you for your service to endangered animals and species. Squirrels are getting on the brink of extinction due to cutting down trees and forests. And everybody loves to see squirrels with those fluffy tails in the forest gathering nuts and seeds for the winter during a walk through a big forest during autumn.

Up north, if we found a rodent nest in a dangerous place for the animal (like in my dresser or a tarp), all it would take was disturbing the nest even slightly and leaving a clear path to the open front door to have the whole family gone within the hour. It sounds like your momma just wasn't confident in the nests for whatever reason. She seems to like you, but your scent, or just new scents on the babies might have triggered a deep seeded need to move. Happy everyone is okay though!

@@Turtleback8024 dude, no. You're wrong on so many levels, you literally have the world's knowledge at your fingertips and yet, you still wrote something that stupid and put it out into the world. Dogs will not eat their babies because they smell like a person. They will eat their babies if they are starving, under constant threat (like being next to a freeway or very active public location) and first time mother's can be quicker to eat their young when under high stress. The mother literally is just making the choice to not raise a litter because it's too hostile of an environment and could lead to her death.
You have to be stupid as fuck to think mother animals kill their babies based on smell.

    • @khoryvodkamiss9725
      @khoryvodkamiss9725 4 года назад +17

Scent has nothing to do with it. I've raised all types of rodents including squirrels and they don't care about human smell. They care more about the structure and stability of the nest. Rodents like to burrow and make like a small dome that's completely compressed on the sides, warm and cozy in the middle. The way he set it up was for like a bird or a rodent just starting a nest. She didn't want to rebuild the nest (or maybe she did but the babies were in the way) and she had no where to put them.
He would have had better success if he used the fluffy rodent bedding and just fisted it in there until it was like a dome with a small opening to get in. Rodents are way more particular about their nests than birds.

The cause of this is simple :
You noticed fleas inside the nest, thus cleaned it. The intention was nice, but by doing so (other than removing the pests) you also did 2 things :
1 - You wiped out the scent left in the nest by the babies and the mother.
2 - You replaced the nest's materials, and re-arranged them differently.
This led to the mother believing the nest had been discovered by potential predators, which triggered a re-location behavior, in which the mother squirrel will move her babies into another nest prepared in advance (In the Wild, squirrels prepare around 3-4 dens inside their territory for this kind of situations).
However, as they're pets living in a restricted area, she didn't have a second nest prepared at a suitable distance from the first one, so she ended up roaming around searching for a way out with her baby in the mouth getting weaker and weaker as time passed.
My advice to prevent this from happening again would be to provide them with one or two spare nesting places in different corners of the enclosure. That way she'll be able to prepare spare nests in case she needs to move them, and she won't end up dragging them around the entire enclosure if you need to clean the nesting box from pests.
The best would be to leave them alone, of course, but there are cases when it may be good to intervene, like you did with the fleas (the babies would've been sucked dry by these pests)

It wasn’t you cleaning the box that made her ditch the baby. Animals often abandon babies that are sick or very weak. You cleaning may have been a catalyst to her stressing out enough to behave like that, but it probably would have happened eventually weather or not you did the cleaning, as that baby was clearly not very strong.
And honestly if your options are “clean the box and risk the mother being stressed out” and “Leave the babies to get sick and diseased by letting them live in a pit of fleas” then you made the right call, and doing anything else would have been neglectful, and they all would have then been abandoned.

@matt vanbeekveld this is an outdated train of thought and absolutely incorrect. People used to think the same of birds, but guess what? Birds have an underdeveloped sense of taste and smell, so they don't abandon their babies due to our smell. I've also had rodents for many, many years of my life. There have been 2 occasions in which my mice mommies have died from cancer, a sad reminder that our beloved pet shop rodents hail from lab stock according to our vet, hence the reason they get cancer and respitory infections so often. It's in their DNA. Anyway, I raised 2 lots of newborn baby mice. On both occasions some remarkable things happened. The fathers took over after I'd fed them. I would get up every 3 hours to feed and them give them back to dad who would scoop them up and lay over them to keep them warm until the next feed. We worked in tandem like this until they were grown up and self sufficient. My 3rd experience was with a pet rat who came to me pregnant. Well, she birthed 9 lovely pups. I tried not to interfere too much as I didn't want to disturb her, but I had to clean the cage after a few days, so although I tried not to disturb the nest, I did cause her an enormous amount of anxiety. While cleaning the cage, she began to move her babies out, one by one. I had forgotten to close the door when I went to wash the bowls out and came back to find her babies strewn across my floor in a line towards my wardrobe where she was moving them up into my clothing. So I had to move them all back and her and I ended up being counterproductive as she'd try and move them the moment I put them back. So I put her in a separate box and put all her babies back, then reintroduced her. I covered her cage and prayed for the best as I have had both mice and rats eat their babies before, never a pleasant experience. Well, she had settled down and went back to being an excellent mommy who fed all her babies until weening. The reason they eat or kill their babies is due to ill health, stillborn or stress episodes that cause anxiety. Also lack of food resources may cause her to kill them. It really isn't because of our smell. Over my years of owning rodents, beginning around 5 yrs old under my own mother's guidance up into my 40's with my own children's pet rodents I've seen so many births and infanticide and also assisted many mothers with their litters and I can assure you they don't kill them because of our smell on their babies. If that were the case, I'd have had every litter dead through all of those years. Rodents are fantastic parents, just try not to stress them out or allow their surroundings to cause anxiety. But sometimes we have no choice but to interfere and let me tell you, by being gentle and respectful, you can also gain a mother rodents trust and she will allow you to touch her babies and move them as you clean around them, they're extremely intelligent animals. If you think I'm talking nonsense, please feel free to do your own research and you will find out the truth.

Taking away the box with the mother watching, and replacing the nest material was really stupid, and alarmed her enough to drag around a kit for an hour, nearly killing it.

    Nice job!
If this happens again, or an animal needs it’s body temperature brought back to normal warm levels, take a cup and a half of dry uncooked rice and put it into a tube sock. Tie the sock up at the end & put it into the microwave for 2 minutes. You can place it under a small towel or blanket and it will help warm up the squirrel and the rice sock will stay warm for up to 20 minutes. It will help bring up their temperatures quickly and help to regulate their body temperature. It will also help keep the blankets/towels nice and warm for some time as well. I always heat up 2 rice socks at a time atleast and place them under the animal on both sides.
I keep 6 rice socks in my kitchen drawer for animal emergencies. I’m a vet tech & we use this method quite often to help regulate animals body temperatures. This was even in my books when I was in college. It works incredibly well for juvenile & baby animals as well as seniors or sick animals.

She wasn't rejecting her babies, that much is certain. She just didn't like your new den materials. Especially the horse hair. The den also smelled like humans and whatever you used to de-flea it. However, someone else was correct when they said she was taking them out to put them in a new nest but she could not find a suitable location. When the baby got too cold and became unresponsive to her, she pulled out another baby to try to "rescue" it from the obnoxious (to them) smell. Rabbits will do the exact same thing. Since you absolutely had to take them out... which you did need to do... the best thing for you to have done would have been to de-flea the existing bedding somehow and use the same bedding in the box so as to make it just like the Mother squirrel wanted it to be. My best suggestion for any time that might happen would be to use diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle it within the bedding and on the box, especially anywhere there's seams when you make a nesting box. You'll have no parasites that way because it gets onto the parasites external shell, and kills them but it's harmless to larger animals such as the kits and squirrels.

I don’t see how he could deflea it without them coming right back, like could be eggs on the babies, bedding, the earth could get in and damage their eyes while they were opening them, etc. It was gross dirty bedding not suitable for babies. The female is clearly a first time mother and not very smart so I think that is a much more prominent factor too. He did the best he could and I think that his choice to discard the bedding was the best choice available. I don’t know if diatomaceous earth would work, in fact I doubt it. Did you see how massive those fleas were? More likely they’d crawl deeper in any crevices on the poor babies and the babies would get coated in it, not good for the mom’s nipples either while feeding. And any product which wards off bugs is going to smell no matter what... I think the only other things he could and should have done would be to thoroughly wash the horse hair with soap/water, and find actually clean bedding maybe from a different/older/unused den and rub it all over the hair and rest of the new bedding instead.

You are so wonderful in what you do ❣️ I love all animals... ( Even a few of the homeliest ones 😅 )
You may not know this, but, not only do you help these beautiful little creatures, you have also been helping me 🦋
I was diagnosed with lung cancer just last month. ( No pity please, I'm tough 😊) I have been watching all of your videos since.
They bring big smiles to my face, makes me laugh, and makes me feel better.🦋
Thank you so much for that.....❤
