Thank God you did Tommy's. I was a little worried that you were going to do a series about burgers in LA and skip it! When I was a student at Caltech, we used to drive down from Pasadena the night the clocks were set back for daylight savings, get a burger, drive back, and we'd get back before we left for a negative time Tommy's run. We even had an algorithm for getting there; take the 101 to the Rampart exit and turn right at every stop sign and left at every stop light. $2 for a double chili cheeseburger and a drink. I'll never forget the night we pulled up after a symphony concert, dressed in blue blazers and ties, and a bus full of Japanese business men pulled up around 1 am and they all pulled out their cameras, taking pictures of everything. Everyone goes to Tommy's, for sure.
Such a chill personality, knowledgeable to deliver the content.. we need this guy and it would be a shame if he died cause he didn't take care of himself :(
Born in Orange county in 1979. There was a Tommy's one mile from my house. Ate there all the time with friends in high school and as the late spot to get dinner when coming home late from anything with my dad. Definitely as much a part of Southern California as In N Out. Just comparing apples and oranges though if you try and vote on which is better. I'd say In N Out is the So California chain that everybody should go to and Tommy's is the little secret everybody from So. California has as a secret they don't really tell people about but is deep down a solid part of growing up in Southern California.
this is what i grew up with, it's my favorite, when they had the burgers at 70 cents, i waited like 3-4 hours in line for it, people were yelling "got it" as they left, AND EVERYONE CHEERED.

Great memories of my parents and late-night runs to this location, back in the day soda was still in bottles. Tommy's will always be an L.A. Burger staple.
I remember going there in the late 80's with my dad and my older brother. I was like 6 years old when i first when to tommy's. They had a crazy selection of can sodas. They would keep the soda in these long coolers. Before they introduced the fountain drinks.

Man this brings back memories, back in high school we used to pile people in to our boy Richard's van, go to shows on Sunset and then scramble up whatever money we had left to share some chili cheese fries and some cheeseburgers and get some gas. This video brought back some memories I haven't thought about in 20 years, thank you.
I have been going to Tommy's all of my life, I'm 62 now. I can remember driving 40 min at 3 in the morning to get a burger, and still had to wait in line at that hour.... It is one of those places you need to try in LA, like Pinks, Philippe's, Hinano's Cafe, Carney's and OKi Dog. These are treats in LA...

Great video . I remember living in Van Nuys as a kid in the 60s and early 70s and eating at Tommy's accross from Busch gardens . Same exact food then as now with the same long but fast moving lines because your burger is cooking before you even pull in . The menu is small and the lines are always there so they just keep putting on burgers knowing they will be sold long before they can get cold . And I remember standing against the window eating or eating in the car . No tables . Wild place when the bars close . Half the customers can't stand up and there's no place to sit . I'm 66 and have eaten burgers from hundreds of places . No one touches Tommies . Kind of like In and Out on steroids . Just as fresh , not quite as sanitary , but with an extra kick in every bite . And everyone has a smile because the place is just fun somehow . Leave your white dress shirt at home or you'll be tossing it in the trash after lunch . I live bout 4 hours north of there now and I am ready to hop in the car and head south as we speak . I don't think they expanded very far . Would be a great franchise if they could keep it the same . That's tougher than it sounds . I gotta head south before I drool to death .
