I loved this video so much. I was raised in a “be perfect” household, and those expectations can really stay with you for a long time. Acknowledging my accomplishments despite imperfections is a constant challenge for me and something I continue to work on. This bit rings especially true and really gets at the heart of the matter:
“Recognize the standard you’re trying to appeal to is, if not arbitrary, certainly a construction.”
It’s so important and I hope those watching this video that struggle will start to reframe their thoughts in this context.

I found at 28 y.o. that my lack of self worth comes from my father, and how he never made me feel good enough or worthy , never stood up for me, etc etc...
Not to blame him but I seriously found out that that's the ultimate source of it all (in my case), I always idolised him and for him I was never good, everyone around me in my life always thought I was great, friends, family, teachers, etc. Everyone. Except my dad. Still now, I'm still feeling worthless unless he likes smth I do.
AAAAAND guess what, as a believer (if you'renot please no nasty comments), I noticed how big of a link I have between dad and god, I literally feel like God would never think I'm enough, everyone's better than me, my spontaneous self is not good, and as long as dad doesn't like me neither will God. Obviously I never thought or said it directly like that, but I just finally noticed and pinpointed it.
It's almost impossible to get over, don't know how to, been trying for years, just feel like I want to die because nothing tastes like anything nothing feels good everything's just a burden to stay alive....

“Not good enough” is a societal projection on how you should be. Surroundings dictating how you should behave. Your human worth has nothing to do with superficiality and you matter. Focus on intrinsic values and do whatever you are good with to create value for others. You’ll see how others opinions will quickly change - NOT that it is of matter.

I figured that message out long ago, but it is special, important, and nourishing to hear it recapitulated from others in their own personal manner of describing it.
I find each and every time I hear various truths, such as the ones you describe hear, spoken in new words from a new consciousness I haven't heard them from yet, the truths solidify more and more in my own conciousness and it becomes easier and easier to seemlessly incorporate them into my daily life with less effort.

I totally agree. When I'm not feeling good in general, I always just focus on others, helping others, supporting others, etc and I often feel better about myself. But if you focus on others and compare yourself to them, that's where you start to feel not good enough. If you just sort of connect with others on a similar level, like supporting them, you tend to not think about who's better or worse. You're just human beings connecting and then you feel more equal. There's no room for better or worse then

That mentality about helping others... it's the only thing that makes me feel genuinely good! It makes me feel happy, it gives me a purpose. It's where I find self love and harmony. Your videos are helping me a lot, I am trying to free myself from pain but personally I find it so hard to achieve that mental strength that makes you realize you're able to move on, that you don't need to be attached to pain. I can't stop feeling sorry for myself, which makes me feel like i'm so egocentric, which in turn makes me feel really bad.
I won't go into detail about what made me come to this point but for the last 6 years I have felt depressed. Some years were worse than others, for example, right now I don't feel as lost as I did 3 years ago. Throughout those years, my tactic was to get my mind busy and excited with things that are toxic and bad for health. I spent all day (literally, all day) on the computer playing games, watching shows, movies etc.. pornography. I did this almost instinctively, so that when I left the computer, my mind would be too tired to stay conscious and relive memories I was trying to suppress.
I have lost a huge part of my life because of the way I dealt with my issues, because I didn't seek help from a professional. Because I was afraid of being judged, I didn't think I was worthy of feeling bad and depressed for problems that compared to other people were nothing. I used to see my father struggle everyday, getting up at 4am to go work in construction and never complaining about it. He and my grandfather were so strong, I always wanted to be as strong as them so I was ashamed of how I felt.
Now I feel sorry for myself, I didn't have any friends here (living in another country since I was 17, i'm 25 now). I wanted to feel love but I thought I wasn't worthy of it/wouldn't find it because I don't like the way I look. I wanted to be happy.. strong, capable of taking care of someone. This has gotten too long... Bottom line, I came to a country where I made a lot of money working a job I never liked, spent that money on my own toxic personal therapy (in games, on pornographic webcam sites, on things I never needed) to realize that all I ever needed, I didn't have.
I am going back to my homeland at the age of 26 next month, I want to get an education. I believe it's the opportunity for change that I needed, and I intent to take it.. even if I feel bad, i'll try to achieve that mental strength, that higher level of consciousness that makes me not only realize but accept, that I matter to the world, that I have value, that I am not the center of the universe but a part of it.
    I will always keep trying.

I work in mental health and often times I’ve seen social comparison via social media as a distracting (at minimum) and destructive force (most commonly) when I work with clients. Often times I remove social media from my phone for a month or months at a time. The only exception I find is RUclips as the way I utilize it is to watch individuals, such as Russell here, who make me feel uplifted. It’s a platform I feel I can better regulate and tailor fit to my personal needs and interests. Although I am alone while watching these videos I know that I am not alone. Thank you Mr. Brand.

I dont think much of myself but i think of myself often. What you are speaking of is our tendency to be extremely self absorbed. You cannot think yourself into right thinking but you can act yourself into right thinking. So the best solution is to do something for another. Not because you want the recognition but because it gets you out of your head. Self esteem only arises from esteemable acts. As you do these things for others your feeling of self worth grows. Pretty soon you will never have a need for another person to tell you how great you are, you will know it by your own works. Stay away from social media and go out and find your passion and act on it.

Thanks Russell for your continuing quest to build a spiritual community through your videos. Lately my thoughts have been towards finding spiritual solace by staying as clear and clearly focused as possible. Your influence as far as finding inner peace through service resonates. I work on people physically through massage and I too must make space for them to heal, both physically and spiritually if possible. I too must heal myself to be of service. Starting with ourselves as being like a friend we care about as Jordan Peterson suggests I find helpful. We must care for ourselves as we would for any friend, with deep compassion and empathy. Patience with ourselves and blessing the circumstances are also extremely healing for me.Bless the circumstance and it will bless you back as Emmett Fox once said. Thanks for sharing your views and learnings with us Russell, know you are making a difference in my life and I am sure many others.

@Juanel when you are reminded of traumatic things, allow yourself to feel the emotions present. Identify them and let them run their course through your body. Our minds are conditioned to fear emotions and trap them inside, and when trapped they cause physical and mental imbalances. But there is nothing to fear about feeling them. Let them burn off through your emotional body, and let their heavy energy be transformed into light in your spiritual body, and let them go. The results of this could likely be feeling freer and not being affected negatively by memories that come up. Negative emotions can be fuel for our spiritual progress. Having them is useful for that purpose. 🙏🏼💗🙏🏼

I have overcome similar self esteem issues by taking back my self worth. It is something I now give to myself, and is unrelated to how other people view me. It also helps to realise that people act negatively with fear, aggression or nastiness because of their own issues and insecurities, and in fact it has nothing to do with you. Also, it helps to forgive them. Forgiveness is less about them, and more about you giving yourself permission to let go of the pain. Good luck on your self development journey, and much love ❤️

About 2 years ago I fell in love with a man who was leading me on, telling me he wanted to marry me only for me to find out from his brother in law that he was keeping me as a reserve while chasing other girls. He made me feel like complete worthless shit to the point that I started to hate everything about myself even my house and family, he made me have insecurities about myself that I never had before and even things I should have been proud of such as graduating from uni, I couldn’t because he had teased me about how it had taken me longer to finish uni (I transferred courses and took a break in between) making me feel like even my degree was worthless. I compared myself to a couple of the other girls he was chasing when I found out who they were and would constantly go onto their social media and put up a photo of myself next to theirs and analyse everything that he didn’t like about me but liked about them. It was torture and I fell into depression. Even after I got married last year I still couldn’t stop thinking why I wasn’t good enough for him. Only now about 2 years after my last contact with him have I started to accept myself for who I am and stop going on social media so much and to focus on those that do love me. There are some really shit people in this world that will mess with your mind and emotions that’s why you have to be so careful when dating and really pay attention to warning signs and don’t fall too fast during the honeymoon phase. You also have to be secure within yourself and not look for that security and approval from someone else. I just regret every moment I wasted on this person. It is truely not worth it to feel bad about yourself as life is so short. It is easier said than done though. I’m still struggling with my thoughts and self acceptance but I’m slowly getting better.

I wasted a precious year of my life and effort on someone who could never love properly. They made excuses and blamed me for everything, I began to feel so insecure and unstable that I could barely go a couple hours without his approval. It was toxic and abusive and scary. 3:33 "holographic" --- I literally just wrote this just before watching:
Imagine for a moment the bizarre possibility that the real you
is a gnome in some domain. In that domain, the gnome is merely
playing a computer game in which physical reality and the experience
of being a bipedal ape are simulated. If this was combined with forgetting
of the original domain, the gnome would have the same experiences you do.
The form the gnome takes might not even be bipedal, could be any form
at all, 10 arms, 8 legs, or even just energy. Even the nature of the domain might be different and nothing like the physical world we know ( in this analogy through the simulation ) .
"what about time, in this analogy?"
There's no reason why time in the simulation and time in the domain,
should be the same. The easiest way to think about that is concept of
time in a game of chess. Experienced chess players know there are two concepts of time in chess. One is on the clock and measured in seconds,
the other is on the board, and measured in moves.
From the perspective of the gnome in the domain, the simulation is more
like time as measured by moves, and assuming the gnome has seconds
in the domain the number of seconds experience in the domain and in
the simulation need not be the same. You can see this if you think of the simulation as an animated sequence of frames.
    "what does this relate to?"
One thing it relates to is the notion of an after life. It's easy to dismiss the notion of an afterlife as preposterous.
A person turned to ashes can be no more, in the physical, but if our true nature is more like the gnome in the simulation
then dying and going to the afterlife, is much the same as the gnome coming out of the simulation back to it's domain.
