How Charles Martinet Changed Mario Forever

- Charles Martinet has been voicing Mario for over twenty years, and he's pretty darn good at it. With the Super Mario Bros Movie proving a success and with Nintendo moving away from Martinet's work in Super Mario Bros Wonder and beyond, the man deserves a bit of extra attention.
As the beloved voice actor behind one of the most recognisable characters of all time steps back from the role that he defined, it's time to revisit how he got the role, and why his particular version of the character has stood the test of time when other versions of Mario have been all but forgotten.
Martinet tells a good story about how he got the role of Mario to start with. It's a solid underdog tale, with a beach bro turning up unannounced at an audition, and annoying everyone until they gave him a job.
Martinet insists that he had never heard of Mario before the audition, and this lack of familiarity with the character no doubt helped shape his particular take on Nintendo's mascot.
This just goes to show that it's better to do things your own way than copy what everyone else does.
In case you were wondering, that's why this video is a series of drawing timelapse clips rather than footage from Mario games. We've tried doing things the way everyone else does them. Now we're going back to doing things our own way.
Lots of love,

After all this time, I guess Martinet can finally return to the beach. Well earned for someone with such a legacy.
This guys voice has been engrained into all of our childhoods, it feels so weird to see a new voice in wonder
It happens it a business. Grow up.
and you bought that game didnt you
The moral of the story:
A person CAN make all the difference, so strive to make a difference in life.
It's not easy, but we need to try. If we have passion and ambition, then we might get lucky, find the right people, and find a way to share that passion and ambition to the world. I hope I'll be able to do that someday.
HOW ABOUT MEL BLANC ?
@@naianetwork2609 I was thinking Mel Brooks…
@@MisteRRYouTuby Breton Stripes is wrong about one thing: Mario being depicted as a negative stereotype wasn't started by Bob Hoskins; that would be Walker Boone for the infamous SMB3 and SMW Cartoon, with the former having "Oh, Brother", an episode I'm pretty sure made fans hate Boone's depiction of Mario for that particular reason. In fact, Martinet, it was the very reason he didn't do that for Mario, because he already heard someone being mocked by a cynical comedian, so Martinet was doing this to avoid a similar problem the person experienced. Heck, I would argue that Martinet and Lou Albano share a similar mindset on how Mario should sound and behave: a fun Italian Man with a love for food and adventure. The "Cynical Smartass" persona would be moved to Wario, to fit with the "Bad Mario" motif it was already going with.
Also, the video failed to include the "Let's make a Pizza Pie together" shpeal that Martinet keeps reciting.
Simple Answer: He Is *_SYNONYMOUS_* With Mario.
Thank You, Charles!♥️
I wish I could meet the guy one day, but I don't know if I'll ever get the chance.
While I am sad that Mr. Martinet will no longer voice Mario, I am very happy he will be able to enjoy his retirement. Sadly few VA can enjoy that within their lifetimes.
4:23 so your telling me
Charles made his Mario debute…
As a vtuber
That is EXACTLY what I'm telling you
27 years strong. Thank you for your work, Charles.
31 years, actually!
Charles's first turn as Mario was Mario Teaches Typing in 1992. (I know the video mentions 1994, but that was the release of the Windows version. It was available on MS DOS two years before.)
Yeah, I know
"Do things your own way rather than copying what has come before. You might not have the success of Charles Martinet, you'll have a lot more fun along the way."
I couldn't agree more.
That's what the people behind the Illumination Mario movie and the SMB Wonder game were doing.
Despite the change in voice actors and direction overall, as well as mixed reception, they clearly had fun with these projects, including Martinet.
So long as we don't let bitterness about change get in the way, we can appreciate and enjoy more things more often!
Feel free to use that LAST line as a moral for your NEXT story...if you haven't already that is...😋
Apparently he has nieces who are used to his voice. So when friends come over and he's there they say "Hey Uncle Charlie, do the Mario thing." and he does which freaks them out.
"🎶Charles Martinet, your a legend 🎶"
Whoever the new voice actor is as of Super Mario Bros. Wonder onward, I hope he'll do quite the 'wonderful' job, as much as Charles did.
Well at least the new guy has one famous catchphrase already.
“Wowiezowie!!!”
They were reuse clips from the game cube Era. The bar is low.
The clips just sound like GC era Mario that doesn’t mean they’re reused
I only hope Charles left on his own terms, you know? Like, or wasn't just a corporate thing. And as much as Martinet was a voice in my childhood, I get the feeling he knows he's gotten up there in terms of age. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought, "Time to leave on a high note."
It's probably a combination of both. I'm sure that both sides sat down and discussed the future of the character since it's been pretty obvious in the past 10 years that Mario has gotten a case of "old man voice" compared to his earlier outings 20+ years ago. Because Charles isn't bitter or upset about the decision, he almost certainly knew his time was up and graciously stepped aside. This tells me that even if he didn't initiate the decision, he has no hard feelings.
Charles to Mario is what Mel blanc is to Bugs Bunny, many will imitate but he will always be the foundation
It's actually THIRTY years later, not twenty! He's been around that long.
Yeah! People, including Miyamoto for some reason, keep acting like Mario 64 was his first outing but it wasn't.
What I'd heard before is that Charles did start with the gruff voice, but then after the casting director said that they wanted Mario sounding friendlier, then that's when he went all silly with the Italian falsetto.
You will be missed Charles Martinet 😢
I've never been this thankful to this guy before. Thanks for such valuable information. As an average office worker whose my freinds always encourage me to try voice acting, this is really inspiring.
I voted for this video! And it came out perfect! Loved it.
Thank you for voting and watching! 😊
Same!
I just hope it was his choice to leave and he wasn't pressured since the movie with Pratt changed Mario with some success.
Martinet has been super at his job, who is largely responsible for making Mario so well known around the world. The man has now reached the end of his Odyssey, and I hope he enjoys the sunshine at the beach.
Martinet truly gave a voice to one of the most successful and impactful video game franchises of all time. "These are my boys!"
Nintendo made Mario an iconic figure.
But Charles Martinet made Mario an iconic *character.* ❤
Nintendo didn't have to give mario a voice you know?
The other morale of this story: Don't just stay on the beach, go exercise the courage to ask for what you want. You never know when simply asking will not only result in a yes, but even lead to you changing the world!
If Sega and Nintendo had swapped positions Sega would've been known worldwide by now with Nintendo's amazing games and Sega's loving, wide open arms for fangames.
I'm just saying.
I'm gonna miss Charles, his voice was my introduction to gaming!
this is a good vid
Nintendo's Mel Blanc.
I hope all the people complaining about Mario having the "wrong voice" in the movie feel stupid now. At least a little bit. Chris Pratt ceall didn't do the best job. I grew up with Lou Albano and Bob Hoskins as Mario.
In my heart Charles Martinet is the best voice actor as OG Mario and always will be ❤.
😊
2:12 cute line reading
That’s-a so nice!
you are the only one on youtube who said something relevant about the best voice actor in the world, this gentleman brings live to my favorite character and its a video game character and its a character of my favorite franchise and this franchise have a lot of fans but a lot of fans didnt care that the soul of the best character is replaced by somebody who is a 20 something years old and im pissed about it cause i want paper mario in the next smash and i want mr Martinet doing the voice of Mario Wario Luigi and WarLuigi ok thanks 4 the video
Still one of the worst decisions made to change Charles. The new voice gets worse and worse every time
Come on. Talk about the Tomb Raider collection that's coming to the Switch. I think it's time you guys go into the History between Nintendo and Eidos back in the day that led to Tomb Raider's release on Switch!
I aLways preferred my Mario having a Brooklyn accent. They should give you an option on choosing your Mario voice.
LOVE AND ALGORITHM APPEASEMENT AND LOVE! 💜🤠
See it's Kevin Afghani is the New Voice of Mario
I don’t know how he grifted his way into Nintendo creating the nothing job of “Mario Ambassador” for him, but kudos, dude. Living the dream.
Funny how we sometimes end up with someone or something so defining due pure accident.
Charles is Very Martinet.
Let’s a go
First
It’s so infuriating to me that no one understands that he has NOT retired, Nintendo simply fired him. And also how everyone is so happy about this change…you all are clearly not loyal fans.
They fired him...by keeping him on? Yeah sure thing.
"you all are clearly not loyal fans" even though we still like the series, it's characters and games? Yeah definitely.
fifth, i think
The moral of the story is Sonic nailed voice acting much better as he didn't sound like a high pitched idiot
Which one? At least Nintendo only needed one guy to voice Mario, unlike the three Sega used for Sonic.
@@JJ_R that was because of 4Kids. Plus Sonic's Japanese voice has never been changed in the games. Plus the only reason Jason Griffith left was because of the contract expiration. Plus it still made sense as it gives the illusion of sonic ageing
What?
@@AC_SPEEDWAYGAMES There were plans to rehire Ryan Drummed in Colors, but because he's union actor Sega didn't want to pay him. Roger was the cheaper option.
