I NEED this for Yoshi- the evolution of his voice/sound design is super bizarre to me, and going back to games like Mario kart 64 are suuuuper jarring now
In a way I really like how luigi's voice has been pitched down through time. Makes him feel like he matured through the luigi's mansion games. Idk if i am making sense lol
I'd love to see Donkey Kong's voice. He's changed quite a lot, and I find it funny he now is voiced by the man who voiced Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time.
That's definitely a good video suggestion; he goes from wild screeches in the 64 era to his current grunts and sounds to the more realistic gorilla noises they use for Smash.
That really does suck that he didn't get to voice Toad. I'm not sure why they didn't leave the desicion up to him I mean he literally wanted to voice Toad and not Luigi. Makes me kinda feel bad for Julien because he basically flew all the way to Japan just to be denied of that opportunity which would honestly piss me off if I were him. But what really bothers me is the fact that Koji Kondo himself said his voice was more suitable for Luigi. Ummmm... Idk about you but an Italian plumber from Brooklyn wouldn't ever sound like that in real life so I'm not sure how they thought this was a good idea.
he's too old and not an actual game history buff to know the ONE time someone else had recorded Luigi's voice at the time Mario Kart 64 was being developed at the same time as Super Mario 64 was. and Nintendo didn't "decide" between Julien and Charles based just on "whatever they felt like" like the video says, they've always reused voice recordings whenever it's convenient for development time/budget constraints and that was the case for Mario Party 1 and 2 (and MK Super Circuit as well, no mention in the video of the characters' voices being recycled specifically from the Japanese version of MK64, with some clips that were probably from the same recording session that went unused for the N64 game).
I find the slightly deeper voice in Mansion 3 to be quite cinematic, it’s like Charles was getting more in tune with the character over time (the first game IMO sounds like exaggeration of the voice to lend to how scared Luigi is)
It’s funny because the Mario movie from the 80s is two Italian dudes from Brooklyn with the accent and everything. It’s a really bad movie but low key so bad it’s entertaining.
@@clownfish92 I went to see it when it came out and I was pretty confused/annoyed at how the goombas etc were just big guys in suits, Yoshi was like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park. I wanted something more cartooney.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Super Smash Bros. Melee was a weird hybrid of the two voices. I believe the game used Charles' Mario voice clips but pitched them up to match Julian's portrayal. A weird relic of this 2 Luigi voices era.
Julien may have never wanted to voice luigi, but if he didn't, we wouldn't have these memorable voice clips of him, and those voice clips are these 7:08
I miss the old toad voice. The one that would scream when I bumped him in Mario kart. And the one that sounded happy in Mario party one. Now he sounds like he smoked too many cigarettes
13:46 - Your outros are the best, they always get a smile out of me! I'm glad you ended up doing at least one impression of a Mario character in this series too 😄
There was a good while when Martinet would seemingly alternate from game to game whether to differentiate Luigi by making him high-pitched or low-pitched. The Mario and Luigi series does the former ("Go Weegee!") while his grunts in Super Paper Mario are pretty deep. But I guess nowadays it's not pitch at all that distinguishes him, it's the "wobble" to the voice.
I’m so happy that Luigi went from the Player 2 character to having so much more personality and life compared to a lot of the other characters. Luigi will still always be my favorite character ever :)
I’ve totally heard and grown up with both voices. Strange hearing both voices because they were both so familiar it made me realize, well damn, there were really in fact two voices…

I think Mario's new voice is pretty good though he's very faithful to Charles Charles Martinet
Dude really had a Toad voice and was told to be Luigi. 😔😔
😞😞
Julien's Luigi sounds like he was salty about not getting toad so he tried to make Luigi sound like toad.
Honestly if he did that voice raspier then he would have a perfect toad voice
I am glad they didn’t choose him as the permanent voice of Luigi his take on the character just sounds way too high pitched.
@@michaelfinlay1412 agreed
@@Mario87456 it's funny, but it ain't Luigi.

7:26 I'm French Canadian and I can tell you with absolute certainty that the reason they rerecorded Luigi's lines is because his original ones had a thick French accent. Especially with the "Luigi is the top!" line.
Charles Martinet really just made up the voice of one of the most iconic Nintendo characters on the spot. What a legend
I NEED this for Yoshi- the evolution of his voice/sound design is super bizarre to me, and going back to games like Mario kart 64 are suuuuper jarring now
funny to think yoshi's original voice was... a midi orchestra hit
mlem
In a way I really like how luigi's voice has been pitched down through time. Makes him feel like he matured through the luigi's mansion games. Idk if i am making sense lol
He's less shrill and scared and more seasoned now
Luigi saying You look ridiculous in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is the funniest thing ever
I'd love to see Donkey Kong's voice. He's changed quite a lot, and I find it funny he now is voiced by the man who voiced Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time.
From demon king to monke
Yeah
That's definitely a good video suggestion; he goes from wild screeches in the 64 era to his current grunts and sounds to the more realistic gorilla noises they use for Smash.
@@Mr.Tw1sty reject humanity, return to monke
Charles killed the Luigi voice, way better than the Julien, Julien should’ve been toad
Tyler, the creator
Well, Julien himself said he wanted to be Toad instead of Luigi; he didn't chose to.
agree
That really does suck that he didn't get to voice Toad. I'm not sure why they didn't leave the desicion up to him I mean he literally wanted to voice Toad and not Luigi. Makes me kinda feel bad for Julien because he basically flew all the way to Japan just to be denied of that opportunity which would honestly piss me off if I were him. But what really bothers me is the fact that Koji Kondo himself said his voice was more suitable for Luigi. Ummmm... Idk about you but an Italian plumber from Brooklyn wouldn't ever sound like that in real life so I'm not sure how they thought this was a good idea.

i talked to charles at fan expo and he said that he voiced luigi for every single game and no one else voiced him
he's too old and not an actual game history buff to know the ONE time someone else had recorded Luigi's voice at the time Mario Kart 64 was being developed at the same time as Super Mario 64 was. and Nintendo didn't "decide" between Julien and Charles based just on "whatever they felt like" like the video says, they've always reused voice recordings whenever it's convenient for development time/budget constraints and that was the case for Mario Party 1 and 2 (and MK Super Circuit as well, no mention in the video of the characters' voices being recycled specifically from the Japanese version of MK64, with some clips that were probably from the same recording session that went unused for the N64 game).
Julien would have made a great Toad. They should have let him do that.
I find the slightly deeper voice in Mansion 3 to be quite cinematic, it’s like Charles was getting more in tune with the character over time (the first game IMO sounds like exaggeration of the voice to lend to how scared Luigi is)
I agree
I really did like it.

I still find it funny that Luigi’s voice in Melee is just a higher pinched version of Mario’s voice.
It’s the same in Smash 64 too
It’s because Sakurai was lazy or something.
Mario and Luigi’s voices starting off as a prank is one of my favorite things.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Super Smash Bros. Melee was a weird hybrid of the two voices. I believe the game used Charles' Mario voice clips but pitched them up to match Julian's portrayal. A weird relic of this 2 Luigi voices era.

When the Voice actor actually loves the characters
Julien may have never wanted to voice luigi, but if he didn't, we wouldn't have these memorable voice clips of him, and those voice clips are these 7:08
I miss the old toad voice. The one that would scream when I bumped him in Mario kart. And the one that sounded happy in Mario party one. Now he sounds like he smoked too many cigarettes

Such a shame Charles Martinet isn't voicing Mario and Luigi in the upcoming film…
Yea...
I think Martinet is making a cameo though...

Such a shame since Martinet is an amazing actor
