@@reheatedpizza7292 hmmmm wouldn't that technically mean, in your case, that he didn't because you thought he was white. Therefore he "sounded white" to you.
My favorite Sonic voice is Griffith's because he actually sounds youthful and energetic, plus he's got that "hell yeah" attitude, but also has that tone that he's a nice guy. EDIT: First, I'd hate to be cliched, but thanks for all the likes! Secondly, I've been warming up quite a bit to Ryan's Sonic to the point where he's my favorite.
The episode in Sonic X where he goes on an adventure with a young girl in a wheelchair is my favorite episode. That's how I've always seen Sonic in my head like you said an energetic nice guy. Roger's Sonic doesn't really give me that vibe.
Can't blame them. I think that he sounds pretty lame from Sonic X to Sonic 06. Probably because of the direction and because it wasn't great material to work with in the first place (kinda like with Roger now🤔) but he did an *awesome* job in Unleashed and with Black Knight being his ABSOLUTE BEST in my opinion, he really earned people's love.
Well, I don't think the problem was Griffith's talent, but more so the circumstances in which he got the role. 4kids has always been a dodgy and controversial company so it's a little unfortunate that's how he wound up at the driver's seat, even though I do think he eventually did the role pretty well. I think people, then, have not much of an issue with him but rather 4kids.
Jaleel, Ryan, Jason, Roger, and Ben are all equally great Sonic VAs in my eyes. They all do a good job at giving Sonic his unique attitude while putting their own personal spin on it without straying too far from the other’s takes.
Fun Facts: 1) Sonic's Japanese VA has been voicing him since Sonic Adventure and is still voicing him today. 2) The only voice that remained the same after the Colors recast was of Dr Eggman played by Mike Pollock
@@nolanstrife7350 The Eggman from SA2 was something else out of this world. Honestly i like Mike Pollocks voice because he give me that sense of goofy by cool villian that you love and wanna hug. OH! but SA2 Eggman .... he was and sounds as intimidating as the Archie one was too. In that iteration was literally Eggman been 500iq while playing imaginary 4D chess with a fox. Sounds menacing, intimidationg, cold and calculative as you expect him to be.
Ryan Drummond will always have a soft spot in my heart. Mostly because I've played the living daylights out of Sonic Adventure 2. Roger Criag is really solid however. He really has the role down at this point.
@KD Its all opinionated , everyone has their own favorite which is fine. I like Ryan grew up with him on the adventure games, and I love Roger, but Jason was and always will be the best sonic voice actor to me.
Jason’s voice was my childhood but also I think he’s the perfect evolution from Ryan Drummond’s sonic, he felt like an older more mature version of the character especially from Unleashed. His sonic will forever be my favorite.
Thank you!! To be honest, I loved all 3 of the main "Modern" Sonic VAs. I always loved Jason's performance; you described it perfectly! I enjoyed Sonic X and some of his games as a kid, as well as adoring Colors an Generations for Roger's. [Roger has been improving :D!] {I also adore other voices for him, like Martin Burke in the OVA, and Junichi Kanemaru as his Japanese VA.} Overall, I agree with you- I think Jason was a perfect step after Ryan's beloved performance. It was like Sonic aged up a little, and was still light-hearted, fun, and energetic-- but toned down a little in a more cool, mature way. That's what made Sonic's character stand out to me, and I loved his caring-by-nature heart to do the right thing. =)
I can agree with this. Jason's voice was "clearer" as Sonic, if that makes sense. Sometimes it felt like Ryan's Sonic had a bit of a head cold; but it was kinda charming in that way. I love them both.
Sonic Adventure 2 was the first time I ever heard Sonic speak, and so Ryan Drummond will forever be the PURE iconic voice of Sonic for me. Roger Craig Smith does an excellent job and I love him for his performance. However I will always be comparing every voice to that iconic during the hay day of Sonic games.
Don’t forget about his single voice line in Sonic CD. “I’m outa here!” Which was entirely different than any other Sonic voice and was noticeably stylistic.
I’m to this day still so disappointed that JUST as Jason was really settling into his role, he was booted. I grew up with his voice, and it’s my all time favorite Sonic. I love all the other VA’s, but Jason’s Sonic just had a certain something that I really can’t explain
I agree; the poor guy was doing SO fantastically! [No disrespect to Roger, though!] I'd say it's that charm. Jason brang such a calm, yet still adventurous sound to Sonic's voice. He made him sound like that friend that you genuinely liked being around- that buddy who was always there with you on adventures, through thick and thin, never giving up. =) He always had that encouraging voice to continue to live on. ^^ I really like how he sounded throughout the years. =)
@@wolfiethehedgehog3900 Yes! That’s what it was about his voice; that warmth and sometimes gentleness of it. I think Roger has a bit more expressiveness with his voice, but Jason really brought a soft friendliness that none of the other actors used when voicing Sonic. Again, I LOVE literally all versions of Sonic; they’re all so interesting in their own ways, but when I hear Jason’s Sonic? It’s like catching up with an old friend - very comforting
@@thehelper1164 I wholeheartedly agree! Tbch, I think I've crushed on Sonic due to that very reason ^^' He just had such a warm, welcoming, humble-at-heart charm that I always admired and looked up to! [Also I'd love to friend you on Discord! My user is in fancy text, but it's the same thing as here. Have a good one! =)]
But if Jason stayed casted, we probably won't have Rodger as boom sonic. But now would be a good time to bring him bacck, as long as they make Boom season 3
I actually really like Jaleel white as the voice actor. It really fits the attitude sonic had in the 90’s. But my favorite modern sonic voice actor has to be Jason Griffith
Japanese executives spent more money flying back and forth to argue about Ryan Drummond than it would have cost just to pay the man fairly for Generations on.
You can tell Ryan was very passionate about voicing Sonic. He had been doing the voice for five years by that point. So it's very infuriating to hear how SEGA did him and rest of the original cast dirty like that by secretly firing them over a cartoon.
@@chaoticcanine That was because Yuji Naka, Sonic's co-creator, made an off-hand comment around 2004 that he wished the NA games and cartoons could have the same voice cast like in Japan. Sega Of America took that as "Fire the game actors and use the Sonic X cast in the games." (Deem Bristow, Eggman's VA, had just died -- one of many reasons no one complained about Mike Pollock).
Me too! I grew up with Jason but Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my favorite video games of all time. I really think he just embodies Sonic perfectly in his performances.
Ryan has so many lines in the Adventure games that really make Sonic’s Personality shine! _”This Game of tag is boring, I’m outta here! Hmph! Finally decided to show eh?, Ok! Bring it on!”_
Sonic Underground was my childhood, even if i was born 2016, i still LOVED Sonic Underground, it was my first ever show that was a favorite. I remember singing the intro sonic when i was 1-3 years old saying "Sonic Underground" repeatedly.
I was ecstatic when Ryan Drummond reprised his role as Sonic in EmuEmi's Sonic & Tails R, alongside Jason Griffith as Shadow, and I know I wasn't alone in feeling that way. Ryan Drummond and Jason Griffith will forever be Sonic to me. I have a soft spot for Jaleel White, and even Martin Burke (I feel like they both capture Sega of America's and Sega of Japan's interpretations of Classic Sonic, respectively, very well). I may not enjoy Roger Craig Smith in the games (he sounds far too old and different from the prior voices, just in my own personal opinion), but I do think he's incredible in the Sonic Boom TV series, as I've always viewed that incarnation of Sonic as older than the character in other continuities. Really, I've greatly enjoyed all of the English Sonic actors (barring Meg Inglima, lol) and I do hope some of them can return in future projects from SEGA. Maybe in their animated projects or potential remakes/remasters? We'll see.
Yes! I came across Sonic & Tails R while researching this video and I thought it was super super cool to have both Ryan and Jason back in a Sonic thing, also alongside Mike Pollock! Very cool indeed
My favorite English Sonic voice is ALWAYS gonna be Jason Griffith. I technically first heard White's Sonic voice when I was little, but it's been so long that I can only recall it if I actually hear it. I mostly grew up watching Sonic X, and playing games like Black Knight and Unleashed (Jason's best performances imo), so Griffith is always the first voice that comes to mind when I look at Sonic. I do of course still enjoy Roger's take on the character. He really did shine in Sonic Boom and his voice direction in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 was AMAZING, and I'm glad it seemed to stick, considering he sounded equally great in Rise of the Wisps.
I didn’t like him in Sonic X but he was really good in black night or Unleashed, Drummond is probably my favorite but Griffith and Rodger both do great jobs given good material
I fully, entirely agree with you! I loved Sonic X and Black Knight- as well as Unleashed and a couple of other titles that included him. Griffith was a perfect next step from what Ryan gave us. =) {No disrespect to the other VAs, tho!} I always loved how silky smooth his voice sounded when speaking; like he was talking to a young audience of kids/teens and reassuring them that they'll always be okay. =) With his performance, Sonic always had that caring-hearted charm to him, and that's what made me like him as a character! ^^ I also enjoy Roger- he's been improving since Colors! Though I always adored how he sounded in Colors (and Gens) since that is what I grew up loving alongside Jason's era. ^^'
"Amazing" and "equally" are quite exaggerative and overly generous, but I agree with where the praise is directed. His performance in RotW is especially overrated for such a short animated series that in no way shows any room of or definitive improvement, which is also funny because, besides a literal few short interactions, he sounded largely the same as before. TSR is his best work overall, outside the cartoons. And yes, Jason is still best game Sonic.
Griffith stays and will always be my favourite Sonic VA. He just sounded so good and Sonic sounded so tough and mature, which were one of the main things I loved about him. By Griffith's voice, you could really tell Sonic has grown and evolved through the years and that he really is 'the modern Sonic' as we should refer till the day of today. Sonic Unleashed is a very good and cool example of that.
You missed his voice actor in Sonic CD. If you wait for 3 minutes in a level of the game without moving or doing anything, Sonic will literally jump off the stage and yell "I'm out of here!"
The video said that it was focusing on the English voice actors and not the Japanese ones. Though Sonic speaks English in CD, it still counts as a Japanese voice actor.
Technically, that's one of the Japanese actors (they just left it in for the English releases), and he said at the start he wasn't going to cover any of the Japanese actors in this video.
I really like Smith's voicing in the Boom cartoon series, though I feel like a lot of that comes from him being set up there as jaded and snarky and just excessively done with everything about Eggman, which doesn't work so well in one of the mainline games.
I really wish they WOULD go that direction in the games, though. Current game Sonic feels a little bland. Like, I'm actually one of the people that liked Forces, but being told "Sonic has been imprisoned and tortured by Dr. Robotnik for a year" and then you see him again and he's... Exactly the same?! Huge, huge whiplash. I want them to do SOMETHING interesting with him again!
As much as I like Roger Craig Smith and am glad he's keeping the role, I do kinda miss Jason Griffith's Sonic sometimes. That might just be because I grew up playing the games he stared in, but when you think of Sonic's voice, his take is really the first thing you think of. Ironically, it's also the most heavily mocked version of Sonic's voice, but that's probably because it was just so iconic and memorable.
Uh, I guess not for me? When I think of sonic I think of the high pitched old voices/ new voices. I think you think of them because you grew up with them
I think a lot of it really is who you grew up with. I was obsessed with the two 90s Sonic cartoons, so Jaleel White was Sonic to me for a huge time. Meanwhile Griffith's era is the time period I kept up with Sonic the least, so his version is the one that sounds the strangest to me. Not because it's bad, it's just the only one I never got a good amount of time with.
Roger's sonic voice shows sonic's age, he sounds like a 30 year old sonic, and the story writing doesn't help either. Jason's sonic voice showed sonic's character but also the story writing helped a lot so idk if the new sonic has a bad voice actor or shitty writing(which it does)
He actually recently lost it. A few weeks ago it was announce that Netflix is coming out with a new Sonic Cartoon show Called Sonic Prime. Sonic was Recast to Deven Mack. Deven is known for voicing Lego Thanos
My personal theory is that Sonic has a different voice/VAs is because every very different design of him or show that he is in is a counterpart or a seperate version of him. Or maybe he's just older/younger in each show or game.
4:17 Actually, Sonic was played by a woman named Paula Arundell in Sonic in Sydney as well. It was a stage musical performed at an Australian amusement park in 1997, but all we have are some pictures and a CD that has the full audio of the show and the full length songs, because for some reason only about a third of each of the songs was in the performance
Sonic's voices in the last decade or so have really taken a "goofy, smart aleck" turn. It's interesting. The "cool, confident" kind of voice Griffith and Drummond went for were totally different. Griffith is probably the best and most iconic, but I think the script and performance of Smith in Sonic Boom are pretty fantastic.
I think that's why I didn't like the direction they took with Sonic when they hired Roger. I practically only watched Sonic X when it came to Sonic media when I was little. I still don't really like the "goofy, smart aleck" Sonic, but it's grown on me a little.
My favourite thing about Jalell White's interpretation is that he sounds like every kid in the playground when they're playing action roles during play time. It's really charming.
I really like Roger Craig Smith’s performance, especially in the newer media. Jason Griffith did a really awesome job in Unleashed though. I like these 2 the most.
I thought it was weird he didn't mention the tweets were about the movie, the movie, or Ben Schwartz's. Which I understand, Ben Schwartz is the worst part about the new Sonic movies. I don't think every previous sonic actor would work for this young sonic, but any of them would be better than hin
@@Pedro_-rs3gz Ben Schwartz's is a very talented voice actor, significantly better than lots of random Hollywood actors the replace proper and better voice actors (such as Ben himself). But his voice is still like nails to a chalk board, and i think my opinion that any of the previous actors would be better is shared beyond me. I wish all the animated characters were at least an original actor from some point in Sonics history, but I can't lie about how much I enjoyed Idris' Knuckles
Personally, I think they all fit in their own way. They brought to life a beloved character that has grown over time and gained new experiences. While the earlier voices are very obviously products of the 90s, they still work just as well for how the character was portrayed as the current one does for who the character has become since.
i agree and i think they did a good job at keeping the consistency because younger me didn’t notice the changes (i started playing at adventure 1, watched the show, and played nearly every main game after)
To this day, I still think Jaleel White should've voiced Classic Sonic in both Generations and Forces. Yes, I know he is an adult and back then he was young. So I understand that Jaleel wouldn't have the same pitch for Classic's voice. But I wouldn't mind if he tried.
I would have liked to hear it too. A couple years ago he voiced Urkel in a Scooby Doo cartoon so I think he could still pull it off. He sounded a little different but it was still close to how he used to sound for the role and Urkel's voice was pretty high pitched like Sonic's.
Well, he did have different Japanese voice actors before SA1. But Kanemaru has stayed with him so long, he's _the_ voice for me. Mind you, I'm a Japanese dub supremacist, but don't mind the English dub voices in Western media. I was introduced to Sonic through the Boom cartoon, after all.
Ryan and Jason will always be the “true voices” of sonic for me in terms of the games. Roger Craig Smith still kinda weirds me out with his take, but I understand his “aged” voice was requested by Sega. Ben Schwartz is awesome though, as a live action, and hell, maybe even a possible game voice actor.
When Steve said "If you can't already tell,I'm black,so I wanted to make Sonic's voice a voice that you can't tell race from, you can't really wonder "Is he black? Is he white? Is he surfer?" No. He's just hero. And fast" My respect for him skyrocketed even more. I really like that tactic.
Ryan and Jason are probably my favorites. Though that’s my biased as I grew up on those voices. Will say I do love how the first voice actors take on Sonic still has some elements in Sonic’s voice as we know today.
Actually, Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffiths, and Roger Craig Smith are all the same person in different disguises. He has to change Sonic's voice every so often so that nobody figures it out. The rest are different people though.
@@omaralfar1666 Before my time, so I really couldn't say for sure, but he might be them too! It's probably one of those things where the person needs to change their identity periodically to hide the fact that they're immortal, but in this case they must be a little bit paranoid about it so they do it too often. :)
This may be an unpopular opinion, but my favourite is Roger. It’s the fact that he sounds mature and everything since Sonic is now 30 or 31, so I think it fits him.
I personally think that Roger fits as Boom Sonic the best, Jason fits best as Modern Sonic, and Ryan fits Sonic’s Classic the best. Also, pretty angering to see that SEGA didn’t even give the Adventure - Heroes VAs a warning before just pulling the plug and saying, “Sucks to be you!”
Well I think both ways are technically correct. DiC stands for Diffusion Information Communication as the company started back in the 60s as an advertisement agency formerly named OGAP. Being an acronymous, it's correct to call it D-I-C, but the late 80s logos did the thing as it sounds ("Deek" or "dic" or "dick").
For me I think my favorite voice is Jason's because his voice sounds the most cool out of all of them. He feels like the youthful sonic but at the same time, his voice makes sonic feel like he is serious about stopping eggman or saving the world.
I actually like all of Sonic's voices. They keep the character design in mind and make it their own (for reference my first game was Sonic Heroes so I grew up listening to Ryan). It's really cool. Too bad the games haven't been good for a while though.
One thing you didn't mention was that Ryan Drummond was almost brought back instead of Roger but he was told he would have to leave his union so he ended up declining it. On one cool note recently Ryan and Jason got to work together on something in the fanmade series Sonic and Tails R with Ryan reprising his role as Sonic and Jason as Shadow.
@@Maybeprobablynot don’t get me wrong I used to be a huge fan of roger as sonic but then I realized he doesn’t really capture his character anymore; in my opinion ben is such a fresh voice I would prefer him to voice sonic in the future games if possible, but I highly doubt it because sega doesn’t have that kind of budget.
@@tideio The one in the movies is a "child" sonic (different from the Modern Sonic), Ben definitely nailed portraying the still immature sonic. While the Sonic Boom "TV" series is where Roger golden period with the Boom Sonic is, due to better voice direction and such (also "OLDER" Sonic). Well, to each his own I guess.
@@yozoolorna9053 I agree with the boom faze, I think roger was fantastic in the boom series and really fit the character well at the time but I genuinely miss sonic more upbeat slightly higher pitched voice. My personal favorite was when Rayan voiced the blue blur. Also the character writing has basically kind of ruined sonic as a character now Plus the deeper voice he just doesn’t really seem like how he used to be but eh maybe it just me sticking to nostalgia; or just me seeing the character it self change for the worse.
@@yozoolorna9053 also sonic canon age is 15 he doesn’t sound or feel 15 feels like a 20 year old with horrible sense of humor (don’t worry I blame the writers for that). You can really tell in the early stages of Sonic X that Jason was really trying to keep that same tone and sound that Ryan had but after awhile lowered his tone and made it his own
Jason Griffith will always be my favorite Sonic. I love Ryan Drummond too, but he didn't get as much time to really settle into the role like Jason did. Nothing against Roger Craig Smith, he just cranks the cocky wiseass aspect up a little too much for my liking.
I feel like all of the main voices in the games nail certain aspects of the character really well. Drummond does a great job with nuanced voice acting, his range is really impressive. The energy Griffith provides to the character is unparalleled, he nails the high energy of the character. Smith's Sonic is overly snarky and quick to make a joke, and I feel like (especially in the Boom series) he has impeccable comedic timing. There's a lot to love about their voices. Drummond is my favorite in the games so far, but I really dig Ben Schwartz's delivery in the movie. He's got a really well-rounded voice that can handle emotion, energy, and comedic timing, while also sounding a tad bit younger. Excited to hear him again in the next movie.
I grew up with Jason Griffith’s voice. Sonic rush was my first sonic game and I grew up watching the sonic X anime. So when I heard it changed to Roger Craig Smith I was absolutely stunned. However I have to say that each of the son of VAs do a great job portraying sonic in their own way!
4:55 "A new game came out which forever changed Sonic's voice." And began the downfall of a once fantastic game franchise. With the exception of Sonic Mania, a truly incredible Sonic game hasn't come out since Sonic CD.
Drummond will always be my favorite sonic VA with roger as a close second. it not that i dont like griffith's va work (he did great) i just think he was better suited for shadow and shouldnt have really had both of those roles. now, imagining griffith doing shadow alongside drummond or roger? absolutely a dream. as a side note i'll miss amy's VA. She's played not only a great Amy Rose, but also voiced Makoto Nanaya from Blazblue, my absolute favorite character from those games.
Yeah, I don't like him that much in the games. I didn't even realize he was the same voice actor for the Boom cartoon, it just sounds better and different to me.
That's because Boom's older design and sarcastic attitude fits Roger's performance way more than the "gotta go fast" personality and current design in the games Also, Roger feels more comfortable doing comedy
yea i really like his performance in boom its just the writing is u know but his deeper sonic voice and moody attitude feels like a 20 yr old sonic to me
Craig sounds like a amazing older Sonic but i feel like most of the other VA's pretty much nailed the voice but i feel bad for constantly being replaced.
It's interesting to watch this video again with the announcement of Sonic (and most of the other Sonic characters) getting a new voice once again in the upcoming Sonic Prime show. Maybe they were planning on having the Prime voice cast, or at least some of them, take over for the games as well earlier in the show's development, but went back on that to avoid a controversy like the 4Kids recast in the early 2000s. Who knows, I wouldn't be too surprised if they're still planning on doing that sometime in the near future, but just waiting to properly gauge the fan reception to the new voices first.
Great video! Though one thing to note is that the current voice actor of Tails only confirmed that she wasn't voicing him in the upcoming netflix show. She's still voicing Tails in the games.
Jason to me is like the perfect mix between them all. He’s my personal favorite for modern sonic, but Roger Craig Smith is also really good. Jaleel is my favorite for classic sonic. I wish he played him in generations and forces. No reason for classic sonic to be mute when classic tails isn’t.
Ryan Drummond is my favorite voice actor for Sonic in English. I used to really dislike Jason Griffith at first, but over the years he did improve greatly. I still prefer Roger Craig Smith over Griffith, but Drummond is still my favorite of the three.
I didn't realise how many actors have played Sonic! Just got me thinking what if Nintendo recast Mario several times?! I can't imagine him being played by anyone other than Charles Martinez
@@NOLOAF-AR Which is good because they can just reuse Charles Martinet's old voice clips. Namco did that with Bryan from Tekken when his VA died. Instead of recasting, they just reused old voice clips.
@@ThomasGameDocs The problem with Roger is that he isn't using his Forge voice from Wolverine and the X-men. That voice would be perfect for Sonic. Instead his sounds like Jaleel White 2.0
sega Actually making Sonic's Deeper when its Roger Craig Smith was a good idea for my own opinion Since considering how many adventures did sonic do over the years of course he'll get older time by time and i loved that.
The new Netflix series Sonic Prime is doing the same thing 4kids did with Sonic X with none of the game VA's reprising their roles for that. Although I doubt Sega is going to enter into a contract with Netflix causing another massive recast so Roger will definitely stay as Sonic for a while longer.
I loved all of the voices for Sonic, but my absolute favourite would have to be Roger Craig Smith's. He puts so much soul into it I mean you can't help but to feel good when watching Sonic Boom. And I hope and pray that he get to voice Sonic in the upcoming third movie (given that Sonic is older by then and would fit the voice rather nicely - especially if Jason Griffith becomes the voice of Shadow once again)
I know he hasn't voiced Sonic for long, and is only voicing him in the movies, but I still feel that Ben Schwartz should have been mentioned. You talked about all the cartoons and the OVAs, not sure why the movie was left out. Still this was a great video as always, it's just I thought it was weird the movie was left out.
Ben Schwartz’s Sonic sounds like the perfect love child of all the previous voices sans Roger. He also sounds like a normal person talking too which is great!
@Burst Gaming I think he was cast based on a dorkier version of the character and how he looked before the change but he clearly loves the character and is pretty funny to boot. He sounds like the best elements of the previous Sonics combined and I liked him more than I expected
Drummond was the perfect voice at the time. He definitely made him sound as cool as SEGA portrayed Sonic to be. Griffith wasn’t bad either. I honestly never knew of the change as a kid because of how similar the voices were. Smith on the other hand was just not right. Idk how to explain it but it just wasn’t Sonic.
I Agree. I do not know what SEGA means by, "Roger brought the voice of Sonic to life" or whatever they said. That was Drummond. Jaleel White got an awesome start then Ryan Drummond brought it to life. Jason's performance for Sonic in Black Knight was awesome. Jason Griffith did not distance himself too far from Drummond's voice, but Roger sounded very different from Jason (or most of them). I get it Roger was told to sound like an older Sonic but he doesn't sound like Sonic in my opinion. THAT IS MY OPINION AND I HOPE IT DOES NOT OFFEND YOU.

It's surprising to think that, at one point, Jason Griffith as Sonic was CONTROVERSIAL. Nowadays, pretty much everyone PRAISES his voice as Sonic.
@__ Um, okay?

Jason is the best especially in Brawl
I didn’t like him in Sonic X but he was really good in black night or Unleashed, Drummond is probably my favorite but Griffith and Rodger both do great jobs given good material
Ryan is the best
If you wait for 3 minutes in a level of the game without moving or doing anything, Sonic will literally jump off the stage and yell "I'm out of here!"
if im not mistaken the person who did his voice for that was either the director for that game or someone else who was working in the game
Wasn't she the first woman to voice Sonic? Or am I wrong here? 😅
@@LupinticDream Oh, I didn't realize they were japanese, my bad
I think of Ryan
My personal theory is that Sonic has a different voice/VAs is because every very different design of him or show that he is in is a counterpart or a seperate version of him. Or maybe he's just older/younger in each show or game.
I really liked Jason Griffith and his aggressive Sonic voice. I'm sure you all loved that, "NOW I'LL SHOW YOU ARGHHHHHHH!!."
All voices were great and can't really pick a favourite. I think what matters most is that Sonic's personality remains unchanged.
My favourite thing about Jalell White's interpretation is that he sounds like every kid in the playground when they're playing action roles during play time. It's really charming.

_”This game of tag is boring, I’m outta here! Hmph, Finally decided to show up eh? Alright! Bring it on!”_
_“What you see is what you get, just a guy that loves Adventure! I’m Sonic the Hedgehog!”_
_”What can I say? I die hard! You actually saved me.”_
The best first line of dialogue in a 3d sonic game
You can really tell in the early stages of Sonic X that Jason was really trying to keep that same tone and sound that Ryan had but after awhile lowered his tone and made it his own
My Theory is Sonic hitting puberty
What if they turn him into a comic relief sidekick again in the next movie?
I grew up with Jason Griffith’s voice. Sonic rush was my first sonic game and I grew up watching the sonic X anime. So when I heard it changed to Roger Craig Smith I was absolutely stunned. However I have to say that each of the son of VAs do a great job portraying sonic in their own way!
Same!!

"A new game came out which forever changed Sonic's voice."
And began the downfall of a once fantastic game franchise.
Honestly I like OVA Sonic.
He just has this sass to him in OVA, plus the iconic "You might know everything" line, the actor nails it.
ova sonic is a gem, perfect classic sonic
Jason Griffith will always be my favorite sonic voice actor.
because basically the voice actor's change time to time. saved you from wasting nearly 20 minutes
Sonic is dogshit he trash!
Mickey mouse and Bugs bunny is so much better then him if u like sonic your trash
It's funny, I think Roger sounds excellent in the Sonic Boom cartoon and game, but not that great in the mainline games at all.
Yeah, I don't like him that much in the games. I didn't even realize he was the same voice actor for the Boom cartoon, it just sounds better and different to me.
@@santosic that's what good voice direction can do
Hes just unlucky for the bad meta era writing
That's because Boom's older design and sarcastic attitude fits Roger's performance way more than the "gotta go fast" personality and current design in the games
Also, Roger feels more comfortable doing comedy
yea i really like his performance in boom its just the writing is u know but his deeper sonic voice and moody attitude feels like a 20 yr old sonic to me
Craig sounds like a amazing older Sonic but i feel like most of the other VA's pretty much nailed the voice but i feel bad for constantly being replaced.
Every Sonic voice actor brings their own flavor to the character yet they never forget who he is I love all the VAs and yes I mean all
It's interesting to watch this video again with the announcement of Sonic (and most of the other Sonic characters) getting a new voice once again in the upcoming Sonic Prime show.
Ryan Drummonds voice is the only voice I remember for sonic
Jason Griffth is the sonic voice I remember
I didn't realise how many actors have played Sonic! Just got me thinking what if Nintendo recast Mario several times?! I can't imagine him being played by anyone other than Charles Martinez
*Charles Martinet 😅😂
mario barely speaks 😭
@@NOLOAF-AR RIP.
@@NOLOAF-AR Which is good because they can just reuse Charles Martinet's old voice clips. Namco did that with Bryan from Tekken when his VA died. Instead of recasting, they just reused old voice clips.
Got some news broooooo!!!!
Oh I have been waiting for this
I hope the video is satisfactory!
@@ThomasGameDocs The problem with Roger is that he isn't using his Forge voice from Wolverine and the X-men. That voice would be perfect for Sonic. Instead his sounds like Jaleel White 2.0
i miss Drummond as Sonic. his SA2 performance is one of my favorites
sega Actually making Sonic's Deeper when its Roger Craig Smith was a good idea for my own opinion
Since considering how many adventures did sonic do over the years of course he'll get older time by time and i loved that.
So that’s why Roger has lasted for so long. No contracts to hold him back, none to stop him. The best circumstances.
Nothing can stop you now! No ghost to bring you down! There's nothing left to lose, you'll win!
No copyright law in the universe is going to stop him
Unfortunate
The new Netflix series Sonic Prime is doing the same thing 4kids did with Sonic X with none of the game VA's reprising their roles for that. Although I doubt Sega is going to enter into a contract with Netflix causing another massive recast so Roger will definitely stay as Sonic for a while longer.
Sounded like some elementary school teacher
Drummond is my favorite. I grew up on Sonic Heroes and playing Adventure for the first time this month he's just amazing.

@Youtubis Accountican They said it out loud on the logo at the end of shows, lol. I feel like he might have spelled it out on purpose.
"Hey! He's on our side. Stop! Shadow, what are you doing?! Nice job, Shadow!"
That was a rollercoaster of emotions...
@@lightningtundra5261 It's offending time!

Sonic’s actual first, and best) voice was from the somic cd voicelines, “yes!” “Yeah!” “Alright!” And the most famous, “im outta here!”
