@Carl Miller 64 makes Bowser sound like some sort of feral beast who wants nothing more than to kill you. There is little to no personality in the voice, and just takes away any depth at all in Bowser as a character in that game. Makes him too bland.
Even if he's only spoken 4 human words as Bowser, Kenny James' Bowser saying "showtime" is incredibly iconic. Having 25% of the lines you've read be instantly iconic is a pretty good rate imo, not many other voice actors can say that.

The current voice is the only one I've known (born '98) but definitely the best among all of these. It has inflections that are human-esque in between the loud roars. It's kind of funny that at the end of the day, they got a bit of both out of a human voice actor.
Unlike Scott Burns, when I auditioned for the part of Morton Koopa Jr in Mario Kart 8, I brought in a picture of myself in my first apartment, in 1989 (when I still had hair!) , playing Mario on the original NES. Pretty sure it helped me get the part!

I feel like Kenny’s roars modified through whatever sfx manipulation makes them so echoey and low would still do the trick in terms of animalistic might, but I can also see what Sakurai’s mindset is as well
I like how Nintendo used a complete other version of Bowser for Smash games. It seems to me like they wanted to portray a much darker version of the character (a threatening fireball-spitting giant lizard with darker colours and body features). I wish more combattants had received the same treatment (even though Smash 5 is already amazing).

I figured most sfx were pulled from libraries, but the Charles Martinet connection is pretty incredible. Crazy that his bowser laugh was recorded over a decade before the game he would have a starring voice roll in was even made.
Can you do one of these for Rosalina? I already know the entire story, but she is in my opinion another character that got voice changes that were very dramatic compared to her debut to the present day! Her character went from misterious and motherly to a more upbeat and joyful one.
She wouldn't have much to go off of honestly. She's had 3 voice actresses, but most of her voice lines are recycled from other games and very little actually new voicework is done. The most interesting thing is that despite Rosalina's Voice Actress being Laura Faye Smith these days, some games opt for using Kerri Kane's old voice clips instead when recycling, (some games even use both Laura and Kerri.)
I’ve met the voice the current Bowser, Kenny James! He’s such a funny guy, he even pretended to scratch out the picture of Mario I had him autograph! 😂
Super Paper Mario and the Wii Era in general was when Nintendo started changing and tweaking things up to how they are now in the last decade. In a way, the Gamecube Era was the prototype in a lot the 3d characterizations, with the 64 laying the groundwork before; but the Wii Era solidified how the characters will be remembered.
If I recall correctly, some time ago I read that Sakurai always pictured Bowser since the NES era as some kind of brute and evil beast instead of the goofy villain we have today, so maybe that's why he prefers to use the animal sounds, to represent how he always has seen him.
Wow, that's such an amazing story! I never knew. Kenny's version has ALWAYS been my favourite and I'm so glad to know how it happened! I think most of Bowser's voices are fine, but his has always been my favourite since I heard it, and will ALWAYS be the TRUE voice of Bowser to me.
In Super Smash Bros. games, Bowser makes realistic monster noises, Donkey Kong makes realistic gorilla grunts, Diddy Kong makes realistic monkey screeches, King K. Rool makes realistic crocodile sounds, and Banjo makes realistic bear gyuh-huhs.
I think Sakurai just feels that those realistic sounds are already part of HIS games, there are only a handful of characters that have received new recordings after their 1st appearance, especially in Japanese, Captain Falcon for example has reused the same voice clips since the original Smash game on the N64, those are a lot of years of reuse
Bowser's voice in Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! was done by a singer named Akiko Wada. Her only other well-known role in voice acting is playing Marge Simpson in the theatrical Japanese dub of The Simspons Movie! Would love to see a video on this one day, as those two characters honestly couldn't be further apart.
Kenny James does such a great job as Bowser, i wish his voice was in Smash, that said, i recommend Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story to hear some of his best work, that "Showtime!" is memorable.
I’m glad you mentioned that you weren’t covering the cartoons back in the 80s and 90s. I would love to suggest something if you have time. Who did the voice of Bowser Junior. That would be interesting to hear about.
That’s interesting. Gabe Newell stated that Doom convinced him that video games were the future of entertainment (or something to that extent) and Super Mario 64 convinced him videogames were art.
Well if Bowser was born in 1985 it makes sense that his voice would start changing in the late 90's....spikes growing in odd places...you start to notice princesses in new and different ways.
The reason bowser still uses animal sounds in the smash games it's because that's how sakurai pictures bowser, he pictures bowser as a big scary lizard monster, so he gives him animal sounds to convey this. And the reason he sees bowser like this is because sakurai just saw the original bowser sprite when he was little, and so he imagined bowser as a big scary monster, which is also where bowser's final smash comes from, it all comes from sakurai's imagination of when he was little.
Same thing goes for Charizard which was unfortunately overlooked in this video, Pokemon started with the idea of them saying their own names and having assigned voice actors so you know it is a big deal when Smash sees it as a better fit whether due to time/cost because there are different names for each language in cases or because it just sounds better for the game. I do think there are bad choices like removing the attack names from Hero outside of Japanese, but neat touches like having Bayo speak Japanese in her Bayo 2 costume. It is very carefully put together but we could use more options if a voice is actually in the game.
@@thelastgogeta Charizard is kind of an exception to that though. The Anime had most Pokémon say their names, but since the beginning of the series, Charizard has never done that and operated on roars instead, so that's what Smash took.
@@Robbie_Haruna I assume Lucario is the same as well, fair enough. It is still the case that the games pretend that all Pokemon just repeat their names.
I agree with Sakurai using animal noises, Smash bros has a less goofy vibe then the games in it, The animal noises sound more threatening and sharper while modern bowser is a bit more silly sounding due to the younger audience Diddy sounds great with chimp noises too,

So Kenny James voices the mario RPG’s by AlphaDream? Honestly those are the most iconic bowser voices to me.
The laugh “GEAHAHAHAHA”
Ik I’m late but yes, I absolutely love Rosalina’s voice and I would love to hear all abt it
I’ve met the voice the current Bowser, Kenny James! He’s such a funny guy, he even pretended to scratch out the picture of Mario I had him autograph! 😂
Almost 2 years after this was uploaded, and all I can say is Jack Black has to be my favorite Bowser voice
Agree, Jack black did every 300% in this movie and proved why he is a goat 😊
Yes
He honestly sounds like he could be sort of a definitive voice for Bowser, at least in the spin off media like the movie for example
I agree!
I wish that Jack Black's Bowser was a touch deeper, but he has a vocally solid foundation.
-Son, look! i'll be the voice actor for this!
-You're Bowser??!!
-No, I'm this turtle thing
That "SHOWTIME" is iconic and reminds me why I loved the M&L games
?!?!?!
@@admiralAlfonso9001 he means the RPG game that let you plays as Bowser aka Mario And Luigi Bowser Inside Story
YES, such a small detail yet it makes me think of Bowser in such a unique and enjoyable way
2023: JACK BLACK.
That Charles Martinet laugh absolutely blew my mind. Love this channel.
3:32 so THATS what the laugh is, when entering the building in Boo's haunted house.
Incredible.
Ah, I recognize that pfp.
Cultured.
not the glasses 😳
Stupid game 😳
The 'Bowsereese' word Kenny James said during the interview made me laugh like crazy!!
Why does paper Mario always somehow end up in every situation? 😂😂😂
Because it's a Mario game?
That game had everything
Super Paper Mario and the Wii Era in general was when Nintendo started changing and tweaking things up to how they are now in the last decade. In a way, the Gamecube Era was the prototype in a lot the 3d characterizations, with the 64 laying the groundwork before; but the Wii Era solidified how the characters will be remembered.
@@Anthony-fu6cl yeah true
If I recall correctly, some time ago I read that Sakurai always pictured Bowser since the NES era as some kind of brute and evil beast instead of the goofy villain we have today, so maybe that's why he prefers to use the animal sounds, to represent how he always has seen him.
3:10 that’s what bowser I’m used to hearing, the “HUH HUH HUH” I was never able to hear the death scream because I’ve never defeated him-
The best sounds he ever had was with the Mario and Luigi game serie
I Agree. The "showtime" before every fight in bowser inside story is just legendary.
this man really died mid word
I love how these videos are structured like a Story, having a summary at the end and the Mario 64 Ending music playing
Its beautiful
But why Sakurai wanted them to make those noises?
@@agentepolaris4914 for bowser he wanted the character to sound monstrous.
@@tranidite oh I see, but honestly they dont feel any menacing, if anything I thought they were silent all this time lol
Bears are pretty good at voice acting compared to most animals.
It’s kinda cool that his kid got to see his Dad be freaking BOWSER like imagine one of your parents was a voice actor for a Mario character
Kenny seems like a cool dude, glad he got the job :)
Thanks!
@@rafkny Hi Kenny! :D
This was such a great video. Gotta subscribe now. I agree the current Bowser voice is definitely the best
Bowser in 2023: Jack Black
They should mix it let him growl and speak sentences like that
Agreed.
Well it’s not so simple because apparently it’s painful for Kenny James to do the voice for long periods of time.
@@Mario87456 He said in an interview that his throat literally started bleeding while recording the "meows" for Meowser.
@@dondemitri3760 Yes I believe I heard that somewhere what is the source of this interview because I cannot remember where it is.
Just a little trivia: Bowser dying in Mario 64 was also the sound effect when a Spider Mastermind notices a player in Doom
@@thelastgogeta
Actually, if you listen closely, Charizard says his Japanese name (Lizardon)
That doesn't explain DK, Diddy and King K Rool though...
As a person in love with this character since childhood, I’m really grateful for this beautiful video dedicated to him ❤️
Everyone at bowser:Yay that’s cool
Me:HE LEARNED HIS FIRST FULL SENTENCES!!!
The only Bowser sound in SM64 which wasn't a stock sound effect was his laugh, which was performed by Charles Martinet.
Me too
Hi hi hi hi hi what
He addresses this in the video! It _is_ a stock laugh performed by Martinet, slowed down!
I find it beautiful that Charles Martinet managed to voice 3 different characters in Mario 64, 2 of them being a fun coincidence.
@@Rogeryoo Mario, Bowser and... Luigi?
Those animals must have been really famous back then
Yo Luigi
A love story for the ages
I agree with Sakurai using animal noises, Smash bros has a less goofy vibe then the games in it, The animal noises sound more threatening and sharper while modern bowser is a bit more silly sounding due to the younger audience
Diddy sounds great with chimp noises too,
"No one's scared of Santa, right ?"
*Proceeds to zoom in on Santa's face*
He sees you when you're sleeping
"HO, HO, HOOOO!"--Department store Santa, "A Christmas Story"

Well, expect him to sound much more different as Jack Black
It looked cute how Kenny James played with his Amiibos at Minute 11:34
That was a promo for a convention. Thanks!
I just wish he had his actual voice in Smash Bros 😢
Sakurai prefers more realistic monster sounds.
@@mariobroultimate1808 bruh
The game developers figured Bowser is more intimidating when he sounds all monsterous.
I kinda like him when his serious tbh
@@mariobroultimate1808 also Mario being like a John Wick and Luigi being a literal weirdo
Damn scott burns fumbled the bag so hard!
Scott Burn's SMSS Bowser impression was probably the most fitting. He doesn't sound like an evil Santa or a high and mighty king of the koopas. He actually sounds like a really proud dad!
nah
