Thank you for the lesson! I am brazilian by birth, but I grew up in Germany and started playing music as a heavy metal musician who studied classical guitar. So I was deprived of the rich brazilian musical culture and I try to remedy this now. Muito obrigado!
Muito Bom! Wonderful presentation. I'm one of those "yanquis" who thought samba was just extra fast bossa. Didn't really realize that samba came first and had much larger playing ensembles. Also, I absolutely agree with you and the other comment below - LISTENING to recordings, critical listening, is the best way to really absorb these styles (and any style).
Hats off dude, really instructive video!! I'm literally getting started with Samba and Bossa Nova stuffs and besides what you mentioned throughout the video, I was also wondering, what kind of scales / modes should be "put forward" within those two genres? Like I can see that it's mainly based on the circle of 4th and 5th patterns, yet should I prefer some major scales or minor scales? Or even melodic minor scales if we consider adding some jazzy flavors to the sound? Or is it just a matter of taste and you can feel free to apply any color to the "basic" bass patterns? (some phrygian mode, for instance?) Anyway, thanks a million for all these advice of yours, you're a great teacher and musician, keep groovin' !!!
I try to study the bossa nova on a piano for a song, but I keep overdoing the syncopation with the left hand. I also saw dozens of piano tutorials for bossanova, one of them also saying dont overdo it, this time I am more convinced 😊
Bom demaiiis ! Valeu !! This is great information, thank you ! I just wanted you to know that as you're using my backing tracks in your video, you have to write the link of these backing track in the description of your video, according to Creative Commons licence. Can you please do so ? Thanks :-)
I never knew there is Brazilian version of Pino Paladino! ha ha thanks for the great lesson! I started learning some Brazilian music and I learned a lot from this. Greetings and good luck from Sri Lanka!
Glad I found this. Looked at videos from the (great) Rick Beato and Justin Guitar and they didn’t mention the importance of the notes flowing into one another and that changes the FEEL completely and that’s what makes bossa nova so special. Like the most important thing. Obrigado!
@Uncle Gold okay if you want to get stuck on semantics then I'll change it to "bossa nova is just slow samba"; however your semantic games still fall flat, because a comparison like this says nothing about chronology. one could say: "ska is just a faster version of reggae," and it would still be a valid opinion regardless of the fact that ska predates reggae.

do you know a / some music(s) which play with the ambiguity alternating from true samba to true bossa nova ?
Is that a Fender Fat Finger device? It works?
Readers Digest Version: Listen to the two different styles to know the difference in what to play
So: the Samba IS a faster version of the Bossa Nova.
im 9 minutes in and im more convinced than ever that samba is just fast bossa nova. the beat is faster, play busier lines, got it.

Samba é samba, bossa é bossa. Estude!
BN is slower samba. Samba came first.
wow, fist time I see a fretless bass whith fake frets :)
You really need to get to the point faster please. I am 5 mins in and still do not know the difference.
