Scott, thank you so much for including my performance on this selection! It's an honor to be part of this amazing group of musicians. There are so many great bass players around the world an I appreciate that you bring to your channel some brazilian bass players. I'm presenting a talk show on my RUclips channel and would like to invite you to be my guest! Please let me know if you are up for it! Cheers!

Just a tip for Portuguese pronunciation:
Whenever you see an "NH" like in "PipoquinNHa", "BraguiNHa" this nh should pronounce as something like a "Ñ" in Spanish. Like "Lasaña" this "ñ" we understand here in Brazil as a syllable structureed with "nh".

if you translate the brasilian "nh" as "ng", any American/English speaker would be mislead by it and will pronounce it wrong (as in mango). It should be written as the spanish ñ. So for example Ricardinho Paraíso would be 'heecar-giñ-o pah-raeezo'

Terrific post and looong overdue!! Your suggestion at the end, namely spotlighting bassists from a single country each time, is also a great idea. Having said that, I strongly suggest a “Brazil vol. 2 clip”. Brazil is a huge country whose music is among the most stylistically diverse and sophisticated (rhythmically AND harmonically) on the planet. Its pool of world class musicians is vast in direct proportion. All of which is to say, you’ve barely even scratched the surface. Here’s a short list just off the top of my head:
Ney Conceiçao, Sergio Groove, Neguinho Zaza, Kleytton Farney, Zuzo Moussawer.
Thanks again for another fantastic installment!

    Dear Scott,
My name is Wagner. I'm a musician (singer/songwriter) from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
I've been also an English teacher for over 20 years, therefore I can help you a bit on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation on the names you're trying to figure out how to do so.
I've developed an interesting way to use English phonemes as a reference for non native PT speakers.
I'm also a native Portuguese-BR teacher, so if you ever need tips or lessons, I'll be really happy to help. ;)
Anyway, please check below how to pronounce the names.
    Munir = pronounced /Moo-near/
    Thiago Espírito Santo = /Chee-ah-go Is-pee-ree-too Sun-too/
    M. Pipoquinha = /Pee-paw-king-ah/
    Júnior Braguinha = /Bra-ging-ah/
    Glécio Nascimento = /Glass-ee-o Nah-see-men-toe/
    Fernando Rosa = /Fair-nun-do Haws-uh/
    Robinho Tavares = /Haw-bing-oh Tah-vah-riss
    Ricardinho Paraíso = /He-car-jing-oh Pah-ra-ee-zo/
    A. Maia = /My-ah/
This last name might be a bit complex: Nico Assumpção = /Knee-co Ah-soon-sung_oong/
Well, I really hope these tips help you.
Take care and feel free to contact me on my e-mail, if you wish: wagnertorre@gmail.com

Very melodic and untethered. IKUO is a famous rock sideman, as is FIRE. Guys in bands who developed that style were J of Luna Sea, Ka-yu of Janne Da Arc, Masaki, Naoto Shibata of Anthem, Tetsuya of L'arc en Ciel, on and on and on....

Some quick rules of thumb to pronounce Portuguese names:
    1) If the word has an accent, that's the accented syllable in that word.
    2) NH sounds like the Spanish Ñ. Like in Piñata.
    3) QUI (as in "Pipoquinha") sounds like "KEE". (So: Pi-po-KEE-ña)
    4) GUI sounds like the first part of GEAR. So Bra-GEE-ña.
