    This song was written by Chip Taylor, brother of actor Jon Voight! Merrille Rush made the song famous, and Billie Davis, revived it.. Juice Newton had a hit with this a decade later. Many artists have made a cover of this classic tune.

    On this date in 1981 {Feb. 21st} "Angel Of The Morning" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #4 and spent 22 weeks in the Top 100.
    Ranked 25th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1981.
    This was a covered version of Merrilee Rush's hit of 1968, peaked at #7.
    Was 1st in a string of 4 straight records by Juice Newton to make the Top 10; started with this one, the "Queen of Hearts {#1}, "The Sweetest Thing" {#7}, and finally "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me" {#7}

    Maybe you already have the answer: Chip Taylor wrote it. First recording was in 1961, many beautiful versions followed, from many great artists. :-)

    The composer attribution is wrong. It was written by Chip Taylor, who also wrote "Wild Thing."
    AFAIK, Billie Davis (British singer from the 1960s) didn't write songs, and Billie Davies (Jazz drummer and composer) would have been 11 when this song was first recorded in 1967. Billie Davis *did* put out what I think was the first UK recording in 1967, shortly after the original U.S. recording in 1967 by Evie Sands, which was extremely popular in a couple of local radio markets in the U.S. but did not become a hit as the record company that put it out was collapsing and going bankrupt.
    The song became a monster hit in 1968 in a cover by Merilee Rush. There were two versions, one with background singers and double-tracked (which was just starting with new tape technology that could do 4 or 8 tracks at a time) but the one I remember is just with her voice and much less adornment.
    I was in high school then (graduated in 1969) and the reason is that it caused such a sensation is that it came in the middle of a huge shift in attitudes among young people. Two or three years earlier, it would not have been played on the radio. Thus it meant a great deal to many young people of my generation. It was about a new age of freedom, including in intimate relationships. At the very heart of it was that it was in a female voice, speaking unashamedly of having been the one to take the initiative.
    If you look at the charts it doesn't seem so big because it broke into different markets at different times, as one or another radio station manager finally decided to let it on the playlist, or some DJ heard it, got a copy, and just started playing it. (Today's narrowcast music radio with all its different niches seems like a complete catastrophe to me. Back then the DJs at stations young people listened to had much greater freedom and their programs had much greater variety and personality).
    "Angel of the Morning" was a sensational, hugely controversial social-political song, especially like Janis Ian's Society's Child, which dealt a romance between a white girl and a Black boy. Society's Child is an indication of how quickly attitudes were changing. Ian recorded it when she was 14 in 1965 but despite the song's popularity in NY folk circles her manager had a terrible time finding a label to release it and even then, no one would play it on the air.
    Famous Broadway composer and classical director Leonard Bernstein, who was viewed as the nation's top musical authority, made it a centerpiece of a CBS TV network special on rock music in 1967 -- it was the only complete song actually performed on the special -- and then it broke through on airplay in different parts of the country at different times over the next few months. In Atlanta, a radio station was bombed after playing it. In Miami, where I lived, it was played for a bit and then vanished from the air except on a University FM station (FM was just starting then -- very few radios could receive it).
    "Angel of the Morning" would follow a similar pattern of uneven spread -- but no bombings that I know of!
    Since then it's been covered and released as a single many times. I think it speaks to older adolescents, perhaps not quite as much as it did at the end of the 1960s, because after it became a coming of age song, but then it was a completely and radically new way of looking at coming of age and especially the attitude of young women.
    This Juice Newton version is OK but somehow lacks the intensity of Merilee Rush's 1968 version, but perhaps I feel that way because I was a teenager in 1968. But still, as I've grown older I've become increasingly convinced of what a privilege it was to have come of age then, it was like what Wordsworth had written about the French Revolution almost 200 years earlier:
    Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
    But to be young was very heaven!
