Every time I hear this it reminds me of a man I loved with all my heart. He could have written this. He just let me go and I still feel the hurt years later. The words that really resonate with me are, "I'm just another writer, still trapped within my truths....", and, "I'd rather hurt you honestly, than mislead you with a lie." You're mixing the lyrics. He first states that his GIRL asks him if he loves her. He responds by saying, "I'd rather hurt you honestly than mislead you with a lie". This means that HE DOESN'T LOVE HER, and would rather tell the truth than lie to her.
He later states, "Sometimes I want to BREAK YOU and DRIVE YOU TO YOUR KNEES, but sometimes I want to hold you tenderly".
This is the sign of a physically abusive relationship, where the man beats the woman and then holds her tenderly, after she is conned into beLIEving that she were resonsible and deserved being beaten and "driven to her knees". This is why many women in abusive relationships continue with other abusive relationships. They are incapable of standing-up for themselves and have been psychologically-dependent on abusive men. This is NOT a good thing!

I remember this song from 1977 as it was not long after we got married. My dear husband died at 57 and this was one of our favourite songs so the lyrics are very poignant to me - One of the best love songs ever written.

There are great songs out there, it's just that you have to hunt a lot harder for them. I would recommend Cruxshadows to you. So many songs from their 20+ year run. Matchstick girl, Monument, Go Away and A Promise Made Wedding Day to name a few. Of course I also value other great singers like Meatloaf as well.

One of the most profound, love stories ever written.
A man who is fighting with his inner demons while being in a relationship. He cannot hide himself when he is with this person, and all the fear and insecurities manifest. He is still searching himself. Sometimes it gets so bad that he feels that he is destroying the person. Sometimes he struggles with himself so much that he just want to hold the person tight. Sometimes he just want to be alone, but he really wants this person. Basically he meets "the one" before he is even ready.

The song wasn't written at the time, but it always reminds me of her. My later wife knew and always said on hearing it, "it's your song".

The lyrics of this song sums up my love life at the moment.I feel I can only totally be myself around this woman. But my pride and insecurities get to me every time I am about to tell her how I feel.
This is the first song I remember hearing. I remember that it made my heart ache so much. I didn't even listen to the words it was the feeling in his voice that made me so very sad, but in the weirdest and sweetest way. In a video to promote his 2010 album Intimate, Dan Hill told the story of this Adult Contemporary classic. Said Hill: "I grew up in a really suburban area, the model suburb of which all suburbs were based in Canada. And it was a beautiful place to grow up in terms of there were so many talented kids that I learned from, music, writing, books. But it was also very, very conservative. By that I mean I had no experience at all with girls.
So suddenly I was like 18, 19, living on my own. And I was running into a whole different kind of girl that I didn't even know existed. I didn't know females could think the way some of these girls were thinking, and I'm talking the early '70s. And at the time the world was changing. Fear of Flying had just come out by the writer Erica Jong, you know, the great writer Germaine Greer had read written 'The Female Eunuch.' And women were kind of wearing their sexuality almost on their chest, as though it was a political statement, as though they were saying, This is my body and I can do what I want with it. They were almost like embracing the 'slut' word, in terms of turning it into a term of empowerment.
I didn't really understand that at the time. All I knew was there was this woman that I was falling desperately in love with, and I just thought everybody was naturally monogamous. My parents have always stayed together. Well, this woman didn't want anything to do with monogamy. She wanted to get close to me, so to speak, but she wanted to be close with a lot of other guys at the same time, and I found this to be terribly distressful. She also liked to tell me about how all the other guys were so much more rich than I was, older, more established, she was going out with athletes, Argonauts (players from the Toronto football team), famous photographers. So I felt very inadequate.
And I thought the only thing that I could do to make her take me seriously as more than just her occasional fling was to write a song that would absolutely galvanize her. I knew that all these guys might have more money, might be older, maybe more sophisticated. But they sure as hell couldn't write songs and sing like I could.
So I set out to write the most powerful song ever written that was just going to absolutely flatten her, so that she would reconsider me, so that she would take me as her only lover. I was very proud of that song. I thought that I had really, really broken into new territory. I'll always remember, I was working for the civil service for $1.89 an hour. I was so proud of that lyric. And I taped it right over where I sorted all the mail. So I saw it on the wall, just looked at that lyric, because I was so proud of it. And then, of course, I got a little too proud of it and a little too cocky, went home from work, phoned up my erstwhile girlfriend, and played her the song, 'Sometimes When We Touch' in its earlier incarnation, expecting her to swoon. Well, there was this sort of martyr silence on the other end of the phone after she had heard that song, and a long, drawn out sigh. And she said, 'Did anyone ever tell you for a 19 year old you're way too goddamn intense. I'm leaving town with a CFL football player, he just got cut. We're moving to North Carolina.' Bam, she was gone.
That was the first of many unintended consequences of 'Sometimes When We Touch.' You think you're going to do one thing with a song, it does something else. You know, I was a very intense guy. 'Sometimes When We Touch' was a very intense song."

Although it was written in the 1970s, it sums up exactly how I was overwhelmed by just the presence of my first girlfriend in 1968. Like Dan Hill I was just too immature for her. We saw each other again in the mid 1970s, and I still could not tell her what she did to me. She married in the late 70s, had two children and now lives in France. I married in the 1980s, my wife knew all about "Angela" and the song.
To this day, my wife having died in June 2015, I have not forgotten Angela, how I felt and still feel about her - and the song. I phone her on birthdays and at Christmas, knowing she would really I didn't. I still have this dream of us back together.
But she is married and it is I who is “trapped within my youth”. Barry Manilow’s “Even Now” hits the same spot. Still one day . . .

I don't think it's a romantic song at all. It's about a guy who's just a 'booty call' who's made the mistake of developing feelings for a woman who doesn't want exclusivity with and commitment to him. It's a spin on the old thing about how men regard women as just good for sex and can juggle more than one woman at once without falling in love with any of them, but women can't have sex without falling madly in love with the guy. This song flips that notion.
