Vlog 31 - BMW M3/M4 S55 Valve Cover Replacement Tutorial (PCV Valve Failure)

- The BMWs are known to have issues with PCV valve failure. The PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation and the valve is a mechanical regulator of pressure for the engine. Unfortunately, when this fails it can cause issues with the engine. The main symptom for this failure is a high pitch squeaking noise coming from the engine, which is the result of a vacuum leak. As typical BMW would have it, this valve is not easily replaced and is built into the valve cover, requiring a replacement of the entire valve cover assembly.
Most M car owners are under warranty and can get this replaced for free, but for those who are in my situation without warranty, this is a full detailed approach to replacing the valve cover. This job at a dealership is quoted to be anywhere from $1800-$2200. With this tutorial you can replace this yourself at home for ~$600 and some time on the weekend (roughly 6 hours including breaks). This is the first RUclips documented S55 valve cover replacement video, so hopefully this can help give back to the S55 community and save some of you $$$money! Link for parts are below.

I just finished replacing mine. I’m so glad you made this video. It made the job super easy. Youre the goat bro
I used this video to do mine last night, took me 6 hours but I definitely saved on labor costs, greatly appreciated
Great video. The community needed this. If you own a BMW you going to change a VCG, oil filter housing gasket, and eventually an oil pan gasket. My valve cover started leaking a few weeks ago so now it’s time to fix it and replace a few other things. Going to knock out the gasket, valve cover, spark plugs, coils, oil filter housing gasket, and a Mosselman oil thermostat. Just get it all out the way. Gonna be a long day but this video is a life saver. Glad to see you got it done with no issues and glad to see others are getting through it too. Saves roughly $2k in BMW labor.
This video has inspired me to take this on myself. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but was second guessing doing this myself until I came across your video. I have subscribed and will follow, please keep the BMW videos coming.
Just did the valve cover replacement and spark plug change following your video. Made it so easier. Thank you Awesomoto.
Broooooo….you just saved me $1100 by doing it myself!!! My baby had the same whining sound at 86k miles and I was so pissed bc I had JUST had the gasket replaced. Brother I can’t thank you enough, kudos to taking on the project and I think your in O-Town, I’m down in Ft Lauderdale and would love to come to a meet sometime, let me know when and I’m there!! Thanks again, keep posted, keep slammin gears!!
Thanks for posting the video, well done! Keep the M4 vids coming, as for suggestions, as you mentioned, some basic mods is a good direction to go in, thanks again!
Thanks, got a quote of $4K from the dealer, which was ridiculous. Followed your video and took a couple evenings to do, but everything worked out.
Randomly found your channel. I don’t have an M4 but really like an appreciate your install videos and VLOGs. The install videos are super quality and just enough depth for beginners. Definitely subbed.
Used this video last night to help me with my install went smooth ! Thank you !!
Have same issue with my M4, will try same approach...so wish me luck. Thanks for making this video. Appreciate you brother.
Thanks for the video. I had previously replaced the spark plugs and coil packs, but it was nice to have a little reassurance. Thanks!
Great detailed video. My M4 has developed a valve cover gasket leak and after seeing your video I might have a crack at replacing it myself. I changed the spark plugs a few weeks ago so I am familiar with half the job anyway.
Thanks for this video! I think older the F8x platform gets, the more videos like these will be appreciated. A lot of these cars are still covered under warranty so not as many people DIY at this time but there will be more soon.
Just came to say thank you for the video, it helped me change the Valve Cover, although i broke the Vent hose in the process im still happy thanks
Your videos is fast...balls... To ...the walls...fast! Nice and direct-to-the-point!! Great synopsis!!
Ohhhh….that sound at the beginning gave me chills.
this is an amazing video! im in the process of replacing my valve cover. just on the part of getting my fuel rail off.
Awesome job! Thanks for doing that. Reluctantly trying to learn how to give a shot myself. Got white smoke and burnt rubber smell coming from that area on my M4 too....
Thank you a lot I really appreciate what you’ve done. I almost open my gearbox I told the sound it’s come from inside.🎉
