I love how the animators actually took the time to put Pansy in the background of the earlier episodes to show that she's actually stalking Joro. Like how at 8:36 she's in the right side of the screen peeking out from behind a wall.
It's vital, of course. In case you didn't know, since the first episode, the whole setup of the story of what's to come in the future have been there all along. Hints have been dropped since the beginning of the show. You just need to find the right frames or timestamps.
Pansy is probably my favorite ever. She and Joro are so perfect for each other, and I really like how they are the two most aware characters in the show - both aware of themselves and those around them. Also, I like that Joro doesn't immediately go "oh, now that I know who you are, I'm totally okay with your affections!" Instead, he goes "you're creepy, you're stalking me and blackmailing me and you constantly say mean things to me, so of course I don't want to be with you!" It's not only how a real guy would respond in most cases, but he has a predatory nature, and predators like him can't handle being prey.
In Kaguya sama love is war standard, she's terrible since she's deus ex machina with only few methods to easily get protagonist fallen for her, so I'd say: predictable, she's dominant in love is war, the protagonist lost his so much potential his fight against bench kun
It may be one of the better anime villains of recent times; Bench-kun knows your weakness and always knows how to find you, there is no escape from him, his clutches of high school romantic hijinks are inevitable.

the whole soundtrack of this show is amazing, done by Yoshiaki Fujisawa, who also did Cheat Magician and Love Life. and the Op is by Kemu (yep, The Kemu), didn't know he can be such funky.
I liked it more when it was only the main duo who were terrible; Joro's "everyone is using me and just out to get me" antics are sort of undermined when they turn out to be true. But the show is still funny.

That's kind of why Tsubaki is so good. Someone who genuinely has nothing but noble and honest intentions is so hard for Joro to believe is true after everything that's happened but she turns out to be exactly the kind of person she presented herself as.
I just found out there was an ova and watched it and I just want to say sun-Chan is now my favorite character. I absolutely love how different he is from other sidekick best friend type characters, who kinda just cheer for the main character from the side lines. He’s an actual developed character, and I really like that he was the one Joro ended up hanging out with at the end instead of any of the girls. At least for me, that was the moment in the series where it felt like the “going against stereotypical harem anime’s” didn’t feel like a gimmick, but an actual satisfying conclusion.

Though I haven't seen the full show as yet (working on that) I've loved Oresuki from the start. So thank you for putting that on my radar with your seasonal touchstone video. I think the main theme of this show is honesty, honestly. Honesty is rewarded, lack of honesty is punished. Through harem hijinks you can see this play out consistently through each character, and better the show gives all of the characters an opportunity TO be honest about themselves and COMMUNICATE (theme no. 2) - something you don't get much in real life. That's what makes it so emotionally gratifying even with all the comedy and fanservice that also serve to highlight and play off of those core themes. You have a resonant story about kids learning how to become good people, who get there by means of honesty and communication. Joro isn't honest about his pervy self. Pansy isn't honest about her appearance (for good reason, granted). Sun-chan isn't honest about his feelings for Joro. Cosmos and Himawari aren't honest about their feelings for Sun-chan. All of them are summarily punished by each other or circumstance until the truth comes out, and then they're allowed to feel better. Honesty is also rewarded beyond that. Foodstand-chan falls for Joro because he's honest about wanting to comfort Sun-chan after The Big Loss. Joro falls for Pansy after she's honest about her appearance (even though he refuses to examine those feelings because of the initial deception and also she's a stalker). Cosmos and Himawari both begin to fall for Joro after he shows his true colours to Sun-chan - instead of meek Nice Guy TM he's actually a Tsundere-kun With A Plan whose moral compass becomes even more poignant through that lense. And I appreciate that, too. Though some of the characters are shallow, Joro has a lot of depth. It would be so easy to just make him a pervy idiot under the Nice Guy TM act, or even just make him a Nice Guy TM. Instead we get to see that under the underneath the underneath he actually IS a pretty good dude. I'd go as far to say that you could very easily read his character as that of one who's ashamed to explore his sexuality and who's learned through media that the only way to safely do that, or to perform sexuality, is to pretend you don't have one. Ergo, Nice Guy TM who has to be 'oblivious' to girls. And guys. Looking at you, Sun-chan. It's a really good show and I like it a lot. Even if I need to pause several times in an episode just to get through the damn thing because I've been Overwhelmed by Emotions for these Dumb Kids.

So we are dealing with a love square, with one of the sides having to ramals. In which anyone is trying to outsmart the others to reach their goal... while trying to not damage their bonds.
Ok i need someone to walk me through this stuff cause my impression of this show is that it has some pretty hilarious moments, and the music is pretty dope, but both of those points gets completely overshadowed by the plot not being able to decide if its a comedy or a really shitty drama. First the show starts off w the premise that for once we're not following the main character in a harem, we're following the sidecharacter, whos actually a douche that wants his own harem, and that was pretty funny. But then in episode 3 or whatever joro gets fucked over by his friend, our main harem boy sunchan who turns out to NOT be a perfect haremboy, but a fucking lunatic that threathens to rape pantsy (all the characters just forgets this and moves on and i got no clue why??), So joro steps in and saves the day, and its explained that hes not actually a douche, hes a nice and caring guy who acts mean for other peoples sake or something. So now hes suddenly main harem boy, and everybody falls in love with him instead, which would have been fine if they didnt start the first episodes of the show off with the main premise being that for once our main characther is not the one in the middle of the harem. So im like ok this was wack as hell but ok hopefully they wont pull more shit like this in the next episodes. But then they just continue to switch the main feel from it being a lighthearthed comedy to it being a heavy drama (done badly that is) with shitty plottwists and bad motivations all around. And everyone is falling in love w joro left and right, and that premise felt like what they were trying to make fun of in the beginning with the joke about everyone falling for sunchan at the baseball game, but then they suddenly start taking the baseballgame stuff seriously in the middle of the dhow and it just feels so tonedeaf?? I honestly dont get what people see in this show
There's probably a lot more to it that the anime glosses over considering that the light novel is 11 volumes long. I think that the main theme is that everyone is capable of being shitty people. Joro was found to be manipulative initially, Sun-chan initially was made to be good, but he was also being manipulative so that he can get with Pansy; Aoi and Cosmos wanted to be nice to Joro because they wanted to date his best friend (oddly enough, this happened to me in high school), Pansy is the most manipulative out of all of them. She's the one who masterminded the whole entire thing. Asunaro (blue haired reporter girl) did some shady gossip just so she can get with someone, and one of the charisma group girls took part in telling Joro that he's a shitty person. The best girl is Tsubaki (the one who gives Joro a job) because she "seems" to be genuine for the time being. I agree, that I wished that they kinda went along with him NOT being the focus of girls' attention, but I take it that there's more to the characters than what you can see on the surface.
What I enjoyed about it was that it's not the typical harem anime. Joro may end up being "the main guy", but it's only because everyone around him finally sees him for who he is as a person. He has terrible and rough parts of him. He's not a "perfect person" like all harem protagonists are. He doesn't even see himself as "the main character" until another person makes him admit that... yeah, he probably is... because he's the glue that holds everyone together. I like that angle. Because, there are people like that. People who don't realize that the reason their friend group even exists, is because the care about it enough to want it to exist. Joro adds Pansy to the group of friends just because he wants her to be in the group. Nobody else even resists. Who is Pansy? A strange bookworm girl who manipulates people and who tells anyone who will listen that she's in love with Joro. The other girls don't see her as a rival. They accept her into the group without issue, they even help her out despite their feelings for Joro as the show goes on. Sun-chan even gets his shit together and tries to be the best friend to Joro that he now views Joro as having been to him. Everyone in that friend group is friends with each other because of Joro. If he ever left that group, they would all stop being friends. They'd find new friend groups. This is remarkably how the situations like that play out in real life. The person who is the "glue" leaves the group, and everyone stops hanging out with each other. They're all in it for him. They all even spend a lot of time "behind the scenes" helping him out. Joro isn't even necessarily "bad", but he embraces the darker parts of himself. He wants to use people and situations to his own gain. He's a horny and selfish teenager. He feels like he doesn't have much of anything in this life, because he's remarkably short-sighted. But, at the drop of a hat, he will help his friends and he will take responsibility for the terrible things he does. He doesn't even fight against the persecution against him because he knows it's earned and he was doing shitty things to people he cared about. What's fun about the anime is that everyone in it is remarkably human. It isn't really a "harem anime" where the guy "gets them all" as typical. It is basically the closest any person in real life is likely to ever get to having a "harem". A group of friends that care deeply about one person, possibly develop crushes on that person, and just spend a lot of time together. Joro, really, doesn't even love any of the girls in his friend group. He doesn't seem particularly interested in being with any of them. They all have qualities he hates and doesn't want to put up with. But, he does want to see them all naked. He does want the validation that comes from being the object of a girls' love. Do you know what's even better than that? Pansy knows him very well from her stalking. Yet, she doesn't do anything to try to get Joro to love her. All she does is admit to being the super hot girl who was really kind that one day at the baseball game. The one who he had stared at her breasts for their entire conversation. She knows he is a horny teenage boy and does not mind at all if Joro wants to find that part of her attractive. She hates when he will admit to hanging out with her just in the hopes of seeing her be beautiful again (she likes that he appreciates her beauty, but hates when he wants to just treat her as a sex object without kindness or consideration). She doesn't berate him for wanting to do sexual things with her, or with other women. She doesn't even stop him from chasing other girls if he would like to (he doesn't, but she wouldn't get in his way at all). She doesn't tolerate his bullshit, but also knows that some of that bullshit likely won't ever be changed. In fact, when he gets a suggestive picture from another girl in exchange for helping her with an issue... Pansy spots it at one point and swaps it. No, she doesn't steal it and berate him for having it. She doesn't act disgusted that he was probably going to use it as fap material later. She swaps it, instead, for a picture of herself. Not of her being sexually suggestive to him, but just a picture of what she looks like when she's not wearing her "nerdy girl" disguise. She even tells him she swapped it "for a better picture". He looks unsure, but then looks at the picture and sees its her. He immediately agrees that the picture is better and tries not to look embarrassed at finding the tamer picture of Pansy to be more attractive than the sexually suggestive one he had. Joro doesn't love Pansy. Or at least, not yet. But, he does find her the most attractive of all the girls there. That's sort of the fun of this anime. It isn't about a harem. Not really. It's about a group of friends that all come together just because of the main character. It isn't about "unresolved sexual tension". It isn't about "leave it ambiguous who the main character would eventually choose so the audience can choose who they would prefer". It isn't about "will they or won't they?". It's about a group of friends who care about each other and get on each others nerves. A group of friends that will fight with each other (and not over nonsense or inconsequential things like pretty much all harem anime) and they will also help each other out even when they're not asked to. It's an anime about friendship as well as growing up.

Oresuki is definitely my favourite show of all season! I thought I'd give it a shot as I don't normally watch harem anime and this show has surpassed all of the other harem anime I've ever seen. Happy you made a video about this!
I discovered this anime through RUclips, in a video where Pansy reveals she's stalking Joro and promptly declares she is in love with him with a remarkable confidence not common in female anime characters, and since that day I fell in love with this beautiful piece of art! The premise is so original, like the way Pansy stalks and blackmails the protagonist that turns out to be in a "good way", taking the proactive role right on the 1st episode. She took my heart, by her cleverness, the way she faces life and the manipulative facet she uses not in a selfish way as usual, but to keep Joro's flaws at bay and for his greater good in the long term. I really HOPE there's a 2'nd season!!! P.S. - Never in my life I thought I would someday admire a romantic comedy. Guess we should never say never...
Since you're reviewing every other good anime this season, may I suggest Welcome to Demon School, one of my personal favorites this season and maybe even this year. Hope you can get around watching it and making a video on it so it can get more attention
TBH I feel the show took an odd turn after the group reconciled with one another. The show started off strong by misleading me that it wasn't a harem. But now all the girls want joro... More emphasis should be on pansy and joro's growth against one another. Exploring the Pansy's twisted flaws and Joro's inner demons. Then maybe add one more girl who likes joro to build tension like the president. She saw value in Joro's behavior (past and current) and reuniting with her kohai that always supported her lead her to romantic feelings. She then butt heads with pansy from time to time because let's be honest serial stalking... Not Kool. Also how she blew up the situation early on, even if everything ended up fine that's not really a good quality in a person. I somewhat connected with joro on how to be a teenage boy but now it's gone.
100% agree. This show does something similar to what Toradora does by taking a great potential and not fulfilling it completely. Although it's not as bad as Toradora because Toradora is awful
Not sure if I can back you up on this one chief. This show definitely straddles the line between okay and good, but it definitely swings closer to painfully adequate in my opinion. The pacing is all over the place, the jokes don't always land for me, and the show is guilty of trying to have its cake and eat it too. The first two are forgivable, as they are mostly subjective, but the last one is the real sticking point for me. It tries so hard to make Joro out to be a genre savvy character that isn't chock full of the usual harem MC tropes, except for all the times when that's exactly what he is. He has a "terrible" personality, but it feels like an after thought that only comes up when the plot/joke calls for it as he's also supposed to be just the greatest guy ever. This kind of duality can be done right, but not when he just switches back and forth for what feels like little to no reason. The first arc sets this up as an atypical, if not deconstruction, of the harem genre, but then hits the exact same plot beats and cliches that we've seen a thousand times. It's by no means a bad show, but I can't help but be disappointed because I feel like it could have been really great if just a few elements were polished a bit better. I think it's really telling that we've reached a point were a painfully adequate harem rom com can be lauded as amazing because the rest of the genre is so trashy (you bet I'm looking at you here We Never Learn) I guess what I'm trying to say here is that Student Council's Discretion did what this show seems to be trying to do, but much better.

The beginning of that show was very promising and original... until it just became your usual harem anime, with all girls crushing on Joro. I was disappointed.
I just finished this series. Above all else, it has heart. Pansy seeing Joro's good side that even he doesn't give himself credit for was very sweet. Himawari is adorable and made me yell at the screen when Joro was mean to her. Shows like this usually have a character that I really dislike, but Oresuki didn't. Everyone in the main cast was flawed, but the genuine care that they all had for each other was really endearing. If this story had a moral, I would say that it's be honest about your feelings, because no matter what happens, it is better to have said something than hanging around on the sidelines hoping someone you are into might notice you.
I wish we had more scenes with Sasanqua. She completely transformed from "annoying gyaru" to "(visually) most waifuable character in the anime - happy!" and... didn't really get any screentime.
Deam, it's happening again... I tend to look at a new anime shows that keep coming out with a huge doze of pesimism, and i desperetly want them not to just be empty shells, but having a deeper thought to them. But at the same time, if from the outside, before getting into show, i see tags like "harem" and group of girls around the protagonist it just automaticly throws me away… I had this strong wave of resistence when year ago i found a show "Quintessential Quintuplets", and i instantly marked it as a "trash" genre, from which i wanna stay away at all cost. But then i watched a video on this channel which talks briefly about what makes this show special and wholesome. With this video i got into this show and completly fell in love with it (first time of me liking a harem show) And now, from what i've seen in this video, it's about to happen for the second time. Just when i see a Mother's Basement's recommendation, i know it's worth a shot :D
The one thing I didn’t like about the show was that it went from the cute girls going from love interests to just friends back to every girl loving him was just disappointing
Revisiting the series I've discovered so much stuff, I originally watched Oresuki when it came out and was disappointed in its ending, I had heard an OVA was coming but I ended up forgetting. so then one day a year later I was like maybe ill re-watch it and that I did. I watched all of it and came to episode 12 and was like ok OVA time.... to find out it was an hour-long movie, I had SOO much suspense waiting, thinking, plotting, and theorizing. until I saw the end and I was like "okay.... that was satisfying we aren't here to pick a girl for Joro, we're here to give the girl he loves a group of best friends..." they all fell in love with him in the process, so of course, now he can't openly be with "Pansy" because that would upset "Cosmos", "Himawari", "Asunaro". instead, he was focused on his best friend sun-chan. So then where does that leave me a year later after I got my closure, well the flower puns.... and meanings I started noticing on my third watch with a friend who doesn't even like harems. "Joro" means "Watering Can", Himawari means "sunflower", Cosmos is a "cosmos flower" Pansy is a "pansy" and Asunaro is a “Thujopsis Dolobrata” which isn't a flower... its a tree. Sun-chan has the obvious meaning of the "SUN" so what is the deeper meaning? "each girl falls for the sun but what they need is water" "Joro". okay, so Ausunaro can be seen as a tall tree trying to take all the water she can. each girl has a specific meaning in the language of flowers and love as Pansy says in the FLOWER Dance: (Pansy flowers)yellow means memories, white means love, and purple means to be filled with thoughts of someone and she has flowers on her uniform of all three colors. This mirrors how she loves Joro, has good memories of him, and is always thinking of him. Himwari being: (Sunflowers) unwavering faith and unconditional love, (yellow "pansy" means memories) this mirrors how she is his childhood friend and always puts her faith in him also wears a yellow flower. Cosmos being: (Cosmos Flower) represents order and harmony (Purple "pansy" means intense feeling) intense or strong feelings for someone that they feel are everlasting) this mirrors her position as class president, and her unwavering thoughts of Joro, her color is purple and she wears a purple flower. Asunaro is actually a red herring name as she means Nothing In the language of flowers however she "LOVES" water, and she wears a white flower symbolizing her "Love" for Joro. Pansy has all three colors because her love for him is truly pure, the other girls just love him for other singular reasons, which is why he tells her "the moon is big tonight" (or however its phrased) Meaning "I love you in Japanese" because he needs to be everyone's friend to Charade that he hasn't fallen for Sumeriko/Pansy he does love her. which id say considering that the ending is different from the manga in some aspects, and the mangaka worked on each episode of the anime, I think he ended it with the nightly walk to leave it OPEN ENDED... HOWEVER SPOILER ALERT FOR THE MANGA, READ ON IF YOU NEED CLOSURE................................................. PANSY AND JORO ARE TOGETHER AND SUN CHAN GETS A GIRLFRIEND IN THE FORM OF THE PURPLE-HAIRED GIRL THAT IS RIGHT BEFORE THE END OF THE MOVIE WHEN SUN CHAN IS WALKING OUT THE SOUTH GATE. TLDR flowers mean stuff and characters named after flowers are readable PS. there is another thing i noticed and thats that book meaning play a major role in some scenes that i havent even dove into. this anime can be super complex if you let it. Sumeriko is reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde joro is also Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. but there are lots of other books ive noticed symbolize secrets and code when pansy says something to joro

Pansy is probably my favorite ever. She and Joro are so perfect for each other, and I really like how they are the two most aware characters in the show - both aware of themselves and those around them.
Also, I like that Joro doesn't immediately go "oh, now that I know who you are, I'm totally okay with your affections!" Instead, he goes "you're creepy, you're stalking me and blackmailing me and you constantly say mean things to me, so of course I don't want to be with you!" It's not only how a real guy would respond in most cases, but he has a predatory nature, and predators like him can't handle being prey.
In Kaguya sama love is war standard, she's terrible since she's deus ex machina with only few methods to easily get protagonist fallen for her, so I'd say: predictable, she's dominant in love is war, the protagonist lost his so much potential his fight against bench kun

That's kind of why Tsubaki is so good. Someone who genuinely has nothing but noble and honest intentions is so hard for Joro to believe is true after everything that's happened but she turns out to be exactly the kind of person she presented herself as.
I just found out there was an ova and watched it and I just want to say sun-Chan is now my favorite character. I absolutely love how different he is from other sidekick best friend type characters, who kinda just cheer for the main character from the side lines. He’s an actual developed character, and I really like that he was the one Joro ended up hanging out with at the end instead of any of the girls. At least for me, that was the moment in the series where it felt like the “going against stereotypical harem anime’s” didn’t feel like a gimmick, but an actual satisfying conclusion.

This is one of my favorite shows this season and Bench-kun might be the best antagonist this season.
Though I haven't seen the full show as yet (working on that) I've loved Oresuki from the start. So thank you for putting that on my radar with your seasonal touchstone video.
I think the main theme of this show is honesty, honestly. Honesty is rewarded, lack of honesty is punished. Through harem hijinks you can see this play out consistently through each character, and better the show gives all of the characters an opportunity TO be honest about themselves and COMMUNICATE (theme no. 2) - something you don't get much in real life. That's what makes it so emotionally gratifying even with all the comedy and fanservice that also serve to highlight and play off of those core themes. You have a resonant story about kids learning how to become good people, who get there by means of honesty and communication.
Joro isn't honest about his pervy self. Pansy isn't honest about her appearance (for good reason, granted). Sun-chan isn't honest about his feelings for Joro. Cosmos and Himawari aren't honest about their feelings for Sun-chan. All of them are summarily punished by each other or circumstance until the truth comes out, and then they're allowed to feel better.
Honesty is also rewarded beyond that. Foodstand-chan falls for Joro because he's honest about wanting to comfort Sun-chan after The Big Loss. Joro falls for Pansy after she's honest about her appearance (even though he refuses to examine those feelings because of the initial deception and also she's a stalker). Cosmos and Himawari both begin to fall for Joro after he shows his true colours to Sun-chan - instead of meek Nice Guy TM he's actually a Tsundere-kun With A Plan whose moral compass becomes even more poignant through that lense.
And I appreciate that, too. Though some of the characters are shallow, Joro has a lot of depth. It would be so easy to just make him a pervy idiot under the Nice Guy TM act, or even just make him a Nice Guy TM. Instead we get to see that under the underneath the underneath he actually IS a pretty good dude. I'd go as far to say that you could very easily read his character as that of one who's ashamed to explore his sexuality and who's learned through media that the only way to safely do that, or to perform sexuality, is to pretend you don't have one. Ergo, Nice Guy TM who has to be 'oblivious' to girls.
And guys.
Looking at you, Sun-chan.
It's a really good show and I like it a lot. Even if I need to pause several times in an episode just to get through the damn thing because I've been Overwhelmed by Emotions for these Dumb Kids.
This is honestly my favorite anime of the season. Bench-kun is the best character in history.

This is actually a Jojo spin off. The chair is actually an enemy stand, the mc has the name Joro, does Jojo pose and sometime even "Yare yare".

This is one of the funniest shows that has come out recently. I was dying of laughter from the bench... the antagonist of doom
Ok i need someone to walk me through this stuff cause my impression of this show is that it has some pretty hilarious moments, and the music is pretty dope, but both of those points gets completely overshadowed by the plot not being able to decide if its a comedy or a really shitty drama. First the show starts off w the premise that for once we're not following the main character in a harem, we're following the sidecharacter, whos actually a douche that wants his own harem, and that was pretty funny. But then in episode 3 or whatever joro gets fucked over by his friend, our main harem boy sunchan who turns out to NOT be a perfect haremboy, but a fucking lunatic that threathens to rape pantsy (all the characters just forgets this and moves on and i got no clue why??), So joro steps in and saves the day, and its explained that hes not actually a douche, hes a nice and caring guy who acts mean for other peoples sake or something. So now hes suddenly main harem boy, and everybody falls in love with him instead, which would have been fine if they didnt start the first episodes of the show off with the main premise being that for once our main characther is not the one in the middle of the harem. So im like ok this was wack as hell but ok hopefully they wont pull more shit like this in the next episodes. But then they just continue to switch the main feel from it being a lighthearthed comedy to it being a heavy drama (done badly that is) with shitty plottwists and bad motivations all around. And everyone is falling in love w joro left and right, and that premise felt like what they were trying to make fun of in the beginning with the joke about everyone falling for sunchan at the baseball game, but then they suddenly start taking the baseballgame stuff seriously in the middle of the dhow and it just feels so tonedeaf?? I honestly dont get what people see in this show
There's probably a lot more to it that the anime glosses over considering that the light novel is 11 volumes long. I think that the main theme is that everyone is capable of being shitty people. Joro was found to be manipulative initially, Sun-chan initially was made to be good, but he was also being manipulative so that he can get with Pansy; Aoi and Cosmos wanted to be nice to Joro because they wanted to date his best friend (oddly enough, this happened to me in high school), Pansy is the most manipulative out of all of them. She's the one who masterminded the whole entire thing. Asunaro (blue haired reporter girl) did some shady gossip just so she can get with someone, and one of the charisma group girls took part in telling Joro that he's a shitty person. The best girl is Tsubaki (the one who gives Joro a job) because she "seems" to be genuine for the time being. I agree, that I wished that they kinda went along with him NOT being the focus of girls' attention, but I take it that there's more to the characters than what you can see on the surface.
What I enjoyed about it was that it's not the typical harem anime. Joro may end up being "the main guy", but it's only because everyone around him finally sees him for who he is as a person. He has terrible and rough parts of him. He's not a "perfect person" like all harem protagonists are. He doesn't even see himself as "the main character" until another person makes him admit that... yeah, he probably is... because he's the glue that holds everyone together.
I like that angle. Because, there are people like that. People who don't realize that the reason their friend group even exists, is because the care about it enough to want it to exist. Joro adds Pansy to the group of friends just because he wants her to be in the group. Nobody else even resists. Who is Pansy? A strange bookworm girl who manipulates people and who tells anyone who will listen that she's in love with Joro. The other girls don't see her as a rival. They accept her into the group without issue, they even help her out despite their feelings for Joro as the show goes on. Sun-chan even gets his shit together and tries to be the best friend to Joro that he now views Joro as having been to him.
Everyone in that friend group is friends with each other because of Joro. If he ever left that group, they would all stop being friends. They'd find new friend groups. This is remarkably how the situations like that play out in real life. The person who is the "glue" leaves the group, and everyone stops hanging out with each other. They're all in it for him. They all even spend a lot of time "behind the scenes" helping him out.
Joro isn't even necessarily "bad", but he embraces the darker parts of himself. He wants to use people and situations to his own gain. He's a horny and selfish teenager. He feels like he doesn't have much of anything in this life, because he's remarkably short-sighted. But, at the drop of a hat, he will help his friends and he will take responsibility for the terrible things he does. He doesn't even fight against the persecution against him because he knows it's earned and he was doing shitty things to people he cared about.
What's fun about the anime is that everyone in it is remarkably human. It isn't really a "harem anime" where the guy "gets them all" as typical. It is basically the closest any person in real life is likely to ever get to having a "harem". A group of friends that care deeply about one person, possibly develop crushes on that person, and just spend a lot of time together. Joro, really, doesn't even love any of the girls in his friend group. He doesn't seem particularly interested in being with any of them. They all have qualities he hates and doesn't want to put up with. But, he does want to see them all naked. He does want the validation that comes from being the object of a girls' love.
Do you know what's even better than that?
Pansy knows him very well from her stalking. Yet, she doesn't do anything to try to get Joro to love her. All she does is admit to being the super hot girl who was really kind that one day at the baseball game. The one who he had stared at her breasts for their entire conversation. She knows he is a horny teenage boy and does not mind at all if Joro wants to find that part of her attractive. She hates when he will admit to hanging out with her just in the hopes of seeing her be beautiful again (she likes that he appreciates her beauty, but hates when he wants to just treat her as a sex object without kindness or consideration). She doesn't berate him for wanting to do sexual things with her, or with other women. She doesn't even stop him from chasing other girls if he would like to (he doesn't, but she wouldn't get in his way at all). She doesn't tolerate his bullshit, but also knows that some of that bullshit likely won't ever be changed. In fact, when he gets a suggestive picture from another girl in exchange for helping her with an issue... Pansy spots it at one point and swaps it. No, she doesn't steal it and berate him for having it. She doesn't act disgusted that he was probably going to use it as fap material later. She swaps it, instead, for a picture of herself. Not of her being sexually suggestive to him, but just a picture of what she looks like when she's not wearing her "nerdy girl" disguise. She even tells him she swapped it "for a better picture". He looks unsure, but then looks at the picture and sees its her. He immediately agrees that the picture is better and tries not to look embarrassed at finding the tamer picture of Pansy to be more attractive than the sexually suggestive one he had.
Joro doesn't love Pansy. Or at least, not yet. But, he does find her the most attractive of all the girls there.
That's sort of the fun of this anime. It isn't about a harem. Not really. It's about a group of friends that all come together just because of the main character. It isn't about "unresolved sexual tension". It isn't about "leave it ambiguous who the main character would eventually choose so the audience can choose who they would prefer". It isn't about "will they or won't they?". It's about a group of friends who care about each other and get on each others nerves. A group of friends that will fight with each other (and not over nonsense or inconsequential things like pretty much all harem anime) and they will also help each other out even when they're not asked to.
It's an anime about friendship as well as growing up.

I discovered this anime through RUclips, in a video where Pansy reveals she's stalking Joro and promptly declares she is in love with him with a remarkable confidence not common in female anime characters, and since that day I fell in love with this beautiful piece of art! The premise is so original, like the way Pansy stalks and blackmails the protagonist that turns out to be in a "good way", taking the proactive role right on the 1st episode. She took my heart, by her cleverness, the way she faces life and the manipulative facet she uses not in a selfish way as usual, but to keep Joro's flaws at bay and for his greater good in the long term. I really HOPE there's a 2'nd season!!!
P.S. - Never in my life I thought I would someday admire a romantic comedy. Guess we should never say never...

More emphasis should be on pansy and joro's growth against one another. Exploring the Pansy's twisted flaws and Joro's inner demons. Then maybe add one more girl who likes joro to build tension like the president. She saw value in Joro's behavior (past and current) and reuniting with her kohai that always supported her lead her to romantic feelings. She then butt heads with pansy from time to time because let's be honest serial stalking... Not Kool. Also how she blew up the situation early on, even if everything ended up fine that's not really a good quality in a person. I somewhat connected with joro on how to be a teenage boy but now it's gone.
They will add another girl, and the girl is Joro's childhood friend that childhood friend is the girl that Sun chan liked.

100% agree. This show does something similar to what Toradora does by taking a great potential and not fulfilling it completely. Although it's not as bad as Toradora because Toradora is awful

Not sure if I can back you up on this one chief. This show definitely straddles the line between okay and good, but it definitely swings closer to painfully adequate in my opinion.
The pacing is all over the place, the jokes don't always land for me, and the show is guilty of trying to have its cake and eat it too. The first two are forgivable, as they are mostly subjective, but the last one is the real sticking point for me. It tries so hard to make Joro out to be a genre savvy character that isn't chock full of the usual harem MC tropes, except for all the times when that's exactly what he is. He has a "terrible" personality, but it feels like an after thought that only comes up when the plot/joke calls for it as he's also supposed to be just the greatest guy ever. This kind of duality can be done right, but not when he just switches back and forth for what feels like little to no reason.
The first arc sets this up as an atypical, if not deconstruction, of the harem genre, but then hits the exact same plot beats and cliches that we've seen a thousand times. It's by no means a bad show, but I can't help but be disappointed because I feel like it could have been really great if just a few elements were polished a bit better. I think it's really telling that we've reached a point were a painfully adequate harem rom com can be lauded as amazing because the rest of the genre is so trashy (you bet I'm looking at you here We Never Learn)
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that Student Council's Discretion did what this show seems to be trying to do, but much better.

I just finished this series. Above all else, it has heart. Pansy seeing Joro's good side that even he doesn't give himself credit for was very sweet. Himawari is adorable and made me yell at the screen when Joro was mean to her.
Shows like this usually have a character that I really dislike, but Oresuki didn't. Everyone in the main cast was flawed, but the genuine care that they all had for each other was really endearing.
If this story had a moral, I would say that it's be honest about your feelings, because no matter what happens, it is better to have said something than hanging around on the sidelines hoping someone you are into might notice you.
I wish we had more scenes with Sasanqua. She completely transformed from "annoying gyaru" to "(visually) most waifuable character in the anime - happy!" and... didn't really get any screentime.
She'll be one of the main 4 girls in the future

I tend to look at a new anime shows that keep coming out with a huge doze of pesimism, and i desperetly want them not to just be empty shells, but having a deeper thought to them. But at the same time, if from the outside, before getting into show, i see tags like "harem" and group of girls around the protagonist it just automaticly throws me away…
I had this strong wave of resistence when year ago i found a show "Quintessential Quintuplets", and i instantly marked it as a "trash" genre, from which i wanna stay away at all cost.
But then i watched a video on this channel which talks briefly about what makes this show special and wholesome. With this video i got into this show and completly fell in love with it (first time of me liking a harem show)
And now, from what i've seen in this video, it's about to happen for the second time.

The one thing I didn’t like about the show was that it went from the cute girls going from love interests to just friends back to every girl loving him was just disappointing
Revisiting the series I've discovered so much stuff, I originally watched Oresuki when it came out and was disappointed in its ending, I had heard an OVA was coming but I ended up forgetting. so then one day a year later I was like maybe ill re-watch it and that I did. I watched all of it and came to episode 12 and was like ok OVA time.... to find out it was an hour-long movie, I had SOO much suspense waiting, thinking, plotting, and theorizing. until I saw the end and I was like "okay.... that was satisfying we aren't here to pick a girl for Joro, we're here to give the girl he loves a group of best friends..." they all fell in love with him in the process, so of course, now he can't openly be with "Pansy" because that would upset "Cosmos", "Himawari", "Asunaro". instead, he was focused on his best friend sun-chan. So then where does that leave me a year later after I got my closure, well the flower puns.... and meanings I started noticing on my third watch with a friend who doesn't even like harems. "Joro" means "Watering Can", Himawari means "sunflower", Cosmos is a "cosmos flower" Pansy is a "pansy" and Asunaro is a “Thujopsis Dolobrata” which isn't a flower... its a tree. Sun-chan has the obvious meaning of the "SUN" so what is the deeper meaning? "each girl falls for the sun but what they need is water" "Joro". okay, so Ausunaro can be seen as a tall tree trying to take all the water she can. each girl has a specific meaning in the language of flowers and love as Pansy says in the FLOWER Dance: (Pansy flowers)yellow means memories, white means love, and purple means to be filled with thoughts of someone and she has flowers on her uniform of all three colors. This mirrors how she loves Joro, has good memories of him, and is always thinking of him. Himwari being: (Sunflowers) unwavering faith and unconditional love, (yellow "pansy" means memories) this mirrors how she is his childhood friend and always puts her faith in him also wears a yellow flower. Cosmos being: (Cosmos Flower) represents order and harmony (Purple "pansy" means intense feeling) intense or strong feelings for someone that they feel are everlasting) this mirrors her position as class president, and her unwavering thoughts of Joro, her color is purple and she wears a purple flower. Asunaro is actually a red herring name as she means Nothing In the language of flowers however she "LOVES" water, and she wears a white flower symbolizing her "Love" for Joro. Pansy has all three colors because her love for him is truly pure, the other girls just love him for other singular reasons, which is why he tells her "the moon is big tonight" (or however its phrased) Meaning "I love you in Japanese" because he needs to be everyone's friend to Charade that he hasn't fallen for Sumeriko/Pansy he does love her. which id say considering that the ending is different from the manga in some aspects, and the mangaka worked on each episode of the anime, I think he ended it with the nightly walk to leave it OPEN ENDED... HOWEVER SPOILER ALERT FOR THE MANGA, READ ON IF YOU NEED CLOSURE................................................. PANSY AND JORO ARE TOGETHER AND SUN CHAN GETS A GIRLFRIEND IN THE FORM OF THE PURPLE-HAIRED GIRL THAT IS RIGHT BEFORE THE END OF THE MOVIE WHEN SUN CHAN IS WALKING OUT THE SOUTH GATE.
TLDR flowers mean stuff and characters named after flowers are readable
PS. there is another thing i noticed and thats that book meaning play a major role in some scenes that i havent even dove into. this anime can be super complex if you let it. Sumeriko is reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde joro is also Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. but there are lots of other books ive noticed symbolize secrets and code when pansy says something to joro
