      not anime but the greatest isekai ever in my opinion would be muv luv, a visual novel triology that I can't recommend enough. first off, no fantasy world operating on rpg logic here, it''s from high school rom-com mecha vs aliens apocalipse in a parallel world now, emphasis on parallel world since the story makes full use of it's nature as an isekai story and a visual novel setting up this multiverse theory that the main character has to solve even getting to the point of having different instances of the same person in different universes collaborate to achieve stuff or things happening in mecha world influencing how the story plays out in the original one, kind of like Steins;Gate. Also the story doesn't pull any punches, especially in the non censored version, some h scenes are your usual "gotta have some h at the end of the route" stuff but some are just too important to skip and some even hard to watch, not going to spoil stuff but both sexually and not this games know how to make their 18+ rating count, this game will make you feel the traumas of the mc by traumatizing you along with him.
      speaking of the Mc, he has one of the best believable character arcs in an isekai I can think of, going from asshole ecchi Mc to a good soldier and by the end a goddamn reluctant war hero. the supporting Harem is also very good, kinda tropey at the beginning but most have something behind their character archetipes and even more when you start comparing them with their alter egos from the second universe, all in all it's mostly a great story.
      since I have written so much about all the great stuff I feel like I should mention some that might turn you off
      first off, it's a long, long story, each games has hundreds of hours of content to read trough, not to mention that the first two games Extra and Unlimited are mostly an introduction to the final chapter Alternative.
      the first one especially takes place entirely in the normal world and the Mc is entirely static trought the whole thing, it's mostly there to introduce all the characters and getting to know them as much as possible before going over to Unlimited that thankfully was released bundled along with it. also while the first games let you get to date all the main heroines in Alternative there is only one (rather predictable) true ending, so unless your favorite happens to be her you're in bad luck. the art style is so early two thousands it hurts (those hair designs look sharp enough to cut steel) but in my opinion has aged rather well compared others and in general both character sprites and backgrounds are pleasing to look at, though not particularely special.
      sorry for leaving you a paragraph but I really love the thing and at this rate it looks like it will remain an hidden gem outside the V.N. comunity

      Redundant is used when an attribute that can be used in a definition of an object are used in a sentence as an adjective to differentiate it from other of the same object. Other objects sharing that attribute has no relation to the redundancy of the statement.
      If someone says a round fruit was redundant then the correct way to refute that would be finding a fruit that was not round, instead of finding a round object that is not a fruit.

    • @lvl999boss7
      @lvl999boss7 5 лет назад +13

      @@phaser4150 Not so sure about that. While their may be enjoyable isekais, many would be better off in other genres or just flat out dont need to be isekais. Also, the shear amount of isekais means that a lot of studios are working on isekais while manga of different genres are being ignored. Look at JC staff's rushed debauchery of OPM season 2 versus their solid adaption of Don machi season 2. Shonen would cause this issue but most shonen are not seasonol. So no, it is not too saturated in the fact that enjoyment can be derived from some isekais. However, the attention the industry has shown towards it is kind of a negative.

    • @phaser4150
      @phaser4150 5 лет назад +4

      LVL 999 Boss I only partially agree with you. There are some isekais that don’t need to be isekais to work (DanMachi is the best example; you could also probably modify Average Abilities as well), but the huge majority of isekais do rely on the “another world” schtick to work. Part of the appeal of isekai is escapism, and how ideas from the normal world and the other world cross over. Taking that aspect out from “Ascendance of a Bookworm” or “Overlord” would fundamentally break these anime.
      Another thing is that the development of isekai doesn’t necessarily affect the quality of other anime. Sure, it can, but One Punch Man is not one of those. I highly doubt that DanMachi is anywhere close to the main reason for the low quality of OPM S2, considering there are many other (more likely) explanations for its downfall.
      I do agree that there is a lot of focus on isekai right now, but I don’t think that it is a genre that is only good until a “set amount” have been made. It’s a genre that you have to judge based on each individual work, and not the whole, especially since isekai seems to have entire subgenres of its own (harem, comedy, realistic, slice-of-life, etc.)

      Honestly, it's actually fairly fun to watch. But you absolutely have to be able to ignore that part of your brain that questions too closely where they get the resources from, how they build them, etc. At it's core the series is a power fantasy variant where the MCs are moderately smart about how they approach the situation compared to the average MC.
      It's in a subgenre of isekai where people ask, what if we went to another world with all of the knowledge on X and just ran with it to it's logical (or illogical) end. Kinda like those two isekai where the MC is a dungeonmaster and uses modern gamer logic to exploit the hell out of the system and build ridiculous dungeons/not-dungeons.

      "Is it literature?" Has two aspects. Wildly, every printed or written work is literature, in the same way that every scribble is technically art.
      The question should be is "Is manga a fine literature?" I tend to say yes, but still has a long way to go. It's still a very pulpy media that contains a lot of garbage, with the greatest creation rising to the top. Most of us knows less than 10% of the all mangas, that's how oversaturated the meduim is. So if you a medium by the percentage of quality work, than Manga is not a fine art. If the fact that quality work can represented only by this media is enough of a criteria for you, then I guess the answer is yes...

    We've been lacking in a realistic take on fantasy settings and Bookworm has thus far done it very well.
    I don't mind your typical overpowered protagonist gets reborn in another world and has an easy time of it stuff, but it's gotten rather boring with just about every isekai doing the same thing. Bookworm changes it up and I love that. And even though we've had hints that Main can use magic, most other isekai would introduce that in the first, maybe second episode, and our protagonist would learn everything instantly and have no real problems ever again.

    I just don't get why they all use the same god damn setting. Like, 'isekai' just means it involves at least one person being sent to another world, you can do so much with that, yet all these shows lock themselves into such a narrow set of tropes, I can't wrap my head around it! I mean, *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* and *Alice in Wonderland* are both isekai, yet they have radically different settings that are interesting to explore in their own ways. Why can't my reaction to a new isekai be "Oh boy, I wonder what wondrous new magical land I'll get to explore alongside the main character this time?" instead of "I wonder what single trope out of like 50 that are apparently mandatory they're going to subvert this time." Like, "Oh wow, the chosen hero with overpowered abilities, who is a generic nerdy Japanese highschool student that inexplicably attracts women to him, summoned to a shitty dragonquest ripoff setting with elves, catgirls, and videogame stats to defeat the demon lord is actually... I dunno... edgy this time and is going to join the bad guys! Wow! How original!"
    I mean, I'm not much of a writer or anything, my prose is sloppy, and I have trouble committing to anything, but at the very least I'm capable of a bare minimum of originality.

    From my understanding, Average Abilities is taking a totally different route, compared to the LN and Manga. Apparently the first arc villain didn't even appear in the written works. With that in mind, we could get anything, and reading ahead might not mean much. The pacing in the first episode was awkward, mainly because they were trying to start in medias res, and skimming on the explanation.
    Bookworm is my favorite show this season. So much, that I'm reading the LN alongside it, knowing that the season will end before it catches up to the book series. At the rate it's going, it'll hit the end of the first book around episode 6 or 7.
    The worldbuilding is a good change of pace. It stays grounded in reality, but adds just enough otherworldly elements to keep things unexpected. This is seen mostly is the different plants and animals. It's also great when Myne uses these fantasy items for modern conveniences, such as shampoo and pancakes.
    I haven't seen the last show yet, but when you compared Ringo to Dr. Stone, that brought to mind that Senku is still bound loosely by the restrictions of his environment, and he started from nothing. Every creation of his is built on dozens of hours of hard labor. I unpaused the video, and you pretty much covered that point. You have a bunch of OP protagonists that can pull off bullshit moves, just because they're geniuses in their respective fields. At least it's better than a single character that can do all that.

      @Caio Coelho Even so, the fact we have more isekai both this season and this summer alone than all of 2018, if not on par, or even more isekai than Summer and Fall 2018, is a huge concern. Not to mention, people say Marvel movies are oversaturating Hollywood, so I wouldn't say isekai oversaturating the market is entirely nonexistent or a topic to be dismissed, and I think it's as important to discuss as whether or not Marvel is or isn't ruining Hollywood.
      IDK about you Caio, but given the circumstances, I don't think either oversaturation or even the overabundance of isekai this summer and even this season is something to undermine or be dismissed out of hand just because YOU think it's something that can be "easily ignored", especially when you factor in shoddy isekai like Isekai Cheat Magician, Arifureta, Master of Ragnarok, Another World With My Smartphone, and others. Not to mention, it's worth mentioning gamers both in and out the RUclips community, are at least willing to address the oversaturation of microtransactions, while calling out EA, Activision, the ESRB, and recently Bethesda and COD Modern Warfare with their respective controversies, and even trying to get Congress to look into the microtransactions, or "surprise mechanics" as EA likes to put it, while us anime fans can't even decide how much isekai is too much and then do something about it.
      And people like you with opinions and mindsets like this aren't helping either. Like Geoff said, with the way anime's heading towards, it's only a matter of time before we find ourselves with double, if not triple the isekai we have this season, and it's damn near past time we start waking up and addressing a couple things BEFORE it happens.

    • @catcactus1234

      feargm No, it’s a pretty fair comparison. Both are over-used cash grabs flooding the market and the consumers are helpless to stop it. For every isekai that gets an anime adaption, that’s one less opportunity for a great yet lesser known light novel/manga to get an adaptation.

    • @Madnacc
      @Madnacc 5 лет назад +1

      @@noahwinns-cromer6914 The comparison to gaming doesn't really fit as for anime it's a simple watch it or don't watch it matter whereas for gaming the whole controversy that called politics to the table is that there's potentially psychologically addictive gambling schemes promoted in games rated for ages 3 and up. It is not about the "oversaturation" of microtransactions but rather the way they are implemented. If it was a cut and dry deal of "pay 2 dollars, get a new weapon" a couple whales will just fork over the money while everyone else will dismiss the game for its pay to win features and move on to the next.
      I don't think there's too much Isekai. In the end Isekai is merely a setting so it's like saying there's too much Fantasy or too much Comedy.
      What I think the problem is that Isekai is now being associated with "OP MC in medieval sword and magic World, possibly and probably with harem along the way".
      So, in my opinion, it's not like we have too much Isekai but rather too much copy&paste stories instead of more original and diverse ideas, even if those ideas are Isekai.
      One of the big selling points of Isekai is that you have a protagonist with pre-existing values, morals and common sense that is brought into a different world that might have a completely different set of values, morals and common sense, especially when magic is involved. A story could play off the culture shock alone quite a bit.
      Doesn't have to be medieval sword and magic either. What about a more advanced technological world where scientists are researching black holes and experimenting with worm holes for space travel or something. An experiment could go haywire and result in a temporary connection to another world which causes the MC to move over. No magic or even intend necessary. No need for manipulative organizations and the like. And this is just the base setting so you can go anywhere from there. Have it be a slice-of-life of MC exploring a more futuristic world or maybe a thriller where it was a government research lab and MC becomes a high priority target for organized crime because of his value to their research into worm hole technology (scientists don't have to be bad for that to work either).
      And you can still throw in magic with all that. What if they managed to integrate magic into technology. They could've build a completely different society based on that to throw of the MC and make it more interesting to watch and explore.
      That's all still Isekai but varied enough to not overlap with 20 other shows in the same season.

    Geoff. When the heck are we getting the dang spider already?! I do realize that its being done in 3d art style instead of something more normal. But daaaaaaamn! The animation for it was announced sometime beginning of slime isekai and before grandson isekai was announced! And its STILL not done??? Ugh... has there been any news of it just straight up being canceled?

    Now I want an Isekai where the episode opens with a high-schooler getting ready for school and steps out blindly into traffic, but the truck driver veers into a pole instead, ejecting him through the windshield and into another world.

    'Our old friend Truck-kun' makes me laugh everytime. Also 'Average Abilities' and 'Bookworm' are on my list- Bookworm sounds like the fantasy slice of life i've been asking for!
