The "they need to be half naked for their powers to work" excuse falls apart in MHA when you like at Mirio. His quirk allows him to phase his body through solid objects, but not whatever he's wearing. And while this is used for some comedic relief when he's first introduced, when we get to the serious part of the arc, it's shown he has a specially made costume that incorporates his hair, allowing him to use his powers freely while staying fully clothed. If you can have a work around like that, why is half the female cast be half naked?
Edit: The point I'm making is less "use hair suits for momo and toru" it's "the mangaka has shown that they're willing and able to make work arounds for male characters to keep them clothed, but not female characters." If Horikoshi really cared about practicality, he could invent a reason why they could stay clothed enough, because mha is a sci-fi series that takes place 80 years in the future. That's how writing and world building works. It's shameless fanservice Horikoshi is hiding behind a flimsy excuse. And the flimsy excuse annoys more more than the fanservice itself.
Edit 2: How to make invisible clothing from invisible hair: Use washable dye on hair, cut hair, weave strands into suit, wash out dye. Boom! Invisible suit and that's not accounting for any sci-fi tech or quirks that would make the process easier.

@@camrenmugabe3062not necessarily. Showing and depicting bad behavior ranging from bakugo to straight up illegal isn't a bad thing, unless it's being encouraged or tossed aside as a joke. Like the commenter said, they could keep mineta being a perverted loser to some degree, but show more than the girl's disgust as their reactions only add to the trope. Maybe have the guys purely ignore him, or actively hold him hostage rather than encouraging him like kaminari. Show he's a gross character-not just by physical appearance (mainly cuz that only adds to the idea that attractive people can be creeps without being considered creeps, which is still gross) but by direct and indirect dialogue/reactions.
Maybe they could use that as a building block, where he realizes quickly that everyone else is maturing while he's still focused on boobs; he loses friends (of he has any) as the story progresses, classmates straight up ignore him, he's not invited to little hangouts, etc. And because he refuses to focus on being a hero, he's either nearly kicked out from UA/Yuuei or during some training thing, he realizes his skills are far behind everyone else's. He can't keep up and repeatedly fails. Perhaps then he could be an interesting character-theres nothing wrong with having a sexuality, but there is a problem with sexual harassment. He could possibly realize an actual goal he has for becoming a hero, probably something actually cool and ironic like saving children/people from r@pe related situations, being the exact opposite of who he was.
And this is just me being the lackluster writer I am, I don't think him being hit with a gender swap quirk or being dressed up as a girl only to experience harassment would work. That, or a gay character harassing him. Neither example would work efficiently, one would simply be hypocritical and the other...kinda selfish that he has to experience harassment as a "girl" to understand why it's bad.

The goal isn't to make every piece of media center women or be absolutely equal about who it focuses on, that's an extreme way of looking at the issue. One of the worst things the story has done to Uraraka was that her original motive of supporting her family ends up taking a backseat to her newfound desire of trying to be like Deku.
Out of all of the characters, Uraraka's motivation felt the most realistic and relatable. Even Deku points out that her goal is more grounded than anyone else's, and that she's not trying to live out some "hero fantasy" like the rest of them. She just wants to support her family, like many people in real life who get jobs purely with that goal in mind.
But for whatever reason, after the Sports Festival arc, it became less and less about supporting her family, and more and more about being like "dream boy protagonist". This is not helped by the fact that she and Ida take a major backseat as Todoroki and Bakugo are pushed more and more into the spotlight.
Plus, I think its deeply depressing that Uraraka's most defining moment as a character, without any help from anyone else, was her losing to Bakugo. It's not the fact that she lost that bothers me, but it's the fact that she's never had a moment like that again. A moment where she goes all out, by herself, against an extremely strong opponent.

Uraraka is not trying to be like Deku that’s why in the sports festival she denied his help because she wants to be independent and use her own mind.
Also you make it sound like the only reason why she became a hero is to help her parents. Yes in the long run she’s going to work for her parents but Uraraka likes to help others too.

BUT most of here relevance and motivation has become increasingly Deku centred and I *HATE* IT! its actually is the main reason why i cant ship Izuku and her, because its literally degenerating her character
      2) and dont worry Urarakas next big moment (that has NOTHING) to with Izuko is coming soon, and many soon after. Which us why i maintain that she is still a great main character, but it also should notve taken this long, also aloy of her growth is covered in the manga only and even there it's just a sideways 'just by the way' kind if thing. • @flamemasterelan

They did have a side chapter about this actually. Midnight doesn't showcase her body for popularity, she does it because her exposed skin is required to release her quirk, which is why her original costume was so scandalous and required the officials to enforce stricter regulations on hero costumes as a result. Mt. Lady, meanwhile, thinks that Midnight pushes things too far which increases the pressure on "younger" heroes to keep up. This resulted in a fight.
As for Momo, this was actually a part of her storyline during the Internship / Hero Killer arc, wherein she was scouted by a pro not for being talented, strong, etc. but because she was a cute girl and spent the entire week as her personal assistant, and was forced to start in a shampoo commercial. She spent her time trying desperately to think of a deeper lesson that she was missing and has not returned to that agency in the aftermath, or spoken of that hero. This contributed to her inferiority complex which she came out of during the exam arc, when Todoroki revealed that he placed a high enough value on her mental faculties that he voted for her as Class Rep.

It wouldn't make sense with Momo, because she doesn't phase anything, she creates objects with her fat. That being said, in Midnight's case I'm sure Hatsume or someone could make a fabric that allows her quirk to seep through but well it's her personality to be femme fatale like Catwoman or Black Cat

it's a tactic called 'lampshading'. Horikoshi deliberately uses Mineta to call out sexual harassment and objectification towards his female characters and 'condemn' them by having Mineta be comically punished over and over. However, Mineta is never outcasted for his behaviour. The boys 'dont claim him' and the girls report him for his behaviour, showing that, to an extent, the writer doesn't condone the behaviour of Mineta, however he is still a part of the class, never properly punished, never changes and is therefore enabled by his environment to continue being a sleaze. His behaviour IS treated as a joke, and I wish he WERE a minor villain OR there was a villain that reflects Mineta's behaviour and forces him to grow beyond his current ideals. The fact that the manga takes his sexual perversion and makes it his 'goal' and says 'welp I guess people are motivated by all different kinds of things! The ends justify the means I suppose (ie as long as he takes down bad guys, he's 'allowed' to be a pervert as some sort of treat)'
It's disappointing behaviour. That said, I do enjoy the female characters in the manga but more particularly fan interpretations of the characters - the fanfics I've read do the characters so much more justice to the interesting and cool women Horikoshi has written.
Also side note - the fact that the women in the manga are treated as pieces of meat seen in Midnight's explanation of her hero costume and it's just treated as an 'accepted' thing as opposed to something the characters should be working against is also disappointing. Seeing Momo being so uncomfortable during her training with the snake lady because she was used as a marketing tool, and having her BUY INTO IT (' I GUESS THIS IS PART OF THE JOB AND WHAT IT TAKES, SO ILL DO MY BEST!!') as opposed to fighting against it is AGH!!

As a character designer, I also hate how most of the female characters have much more low-effort designs. Like, so many of the men have creative accommodations and costumes that tell you something about their character, but it feels like so much less thought was put into the women’s. Momo is by far the worst example but even Uraraka has this problem. She’s just kinda a bodysuit with shapes on it? Why isn’t her costume baggy, especially since tight clothing makes nausea worse and an astronaut theme would have given her design some interest? Why are her wrist thingies with the wire in them just shaped like bubbles? Why does she have *half a helmet* in some iterations? Why is she wearing shoes with no ankle mobility? What the hell is her belt??
It just seems like so little thought was put into it compared to all the male characters. Sexualization so clearly comes first.

Pockets are always useful, I don't think having the ability to carry small things with you needs a deep justification. Deku's mask has little to no functional use, but it's something his nerdy self designed after All Might. It's mentioned several times. It's relevant to his character, not at all a random bit of visual clutter that was tacked on without any thought.
Iida wearing armor makes perfect sense (even ignoring the fact that armor is useful for most combatants.) Iida's quirk is _just_ speed. Apart from the partially metal enginges in his legs, his quirk doesn't come with any built-in physical reinforcement anywhere on his body. He's not naturally any sturdier than anyone else. His attack style consists of using the engines for devastating kicks or to launch himself at things at incredible speeds. Crashing into things at breakneck speeds is very likely to result in, well, a broken neck, and many other serious injuries. Iida's armour lets him use his quirk to its fullest potential by bracing him from the impact _and_ giving him a solid surface so that his kicks land harder.
Apart from that, Bakugou's neck brace might be to protect his spine from the force of his explosions but that may be a stretch. Mineta's diaper is because he's just a comic relief side character and not someone we need to believe is actually capable. His design is supposed to be a joke as much as his character is, and the diaper look plays into him being A) gross and B) the size of a toddler. I got nothing on Kirishima's arm wheels, they're pretty weird. But I don't think they would be as actively detrimental as Uraraka's ridiculous boots (absolutely no one could walk, let alone fight in those) or the extremely bulky armbands when her quirk relies on touching things with her hands.

@@WhitePaintbrush i'm just using the same logic as the original post. juste like the OP, some of my questions aren't legitimate and some of them make sense : like iida. him wearing a helmet and leg protections would be perfectly fine, but a full body armor is just killing his own speed. deku is faster than iida and yet he's not wearing an armor.
it's crazy how hypocritical you're being right now, you're ready to make the biggest stretch ever to explain bakugo's collar, you're minimizing how dumb kirishima's wheels are while emphasizing so much on uraraka's accessories.
if anything these bricks around bakugo's neck is more of a danger than a protection, imagine having a collision against a wall while having this at your neck, it might kill him not fucking protect him. and kirishima's wheels, it's not just unpractical, it looks straight up painful for you armpit area. not dangerous but painful. why are you even even arguing about which one is 1% dumber ? it's totally pointless.

@@kinoo4496 “Some of my questions weren’t serious and some of them were” doesn’t work when there is 0 difference in phrasing between the two, it just kinda makes you look like you were scrambling for examples when there weren’t actually that many and backtracking when someone points it out.
I don’t think Iida’s armor slows him down much. Deku can only keep up with him when he’s not at his top speed. His costume also makes sense from a visual standpoint as it’s supposed to make him resemble a car. Whereas I think some of the choices made with Uraraka’s costume (mainly it being a skintight bodysuit) detract from the visual goal which is for her to look like an astronaut.
I don’t see how smashing into a wall with a neck brace is more likely to kill you than smashing into a wall without one. But regardless, what Bakugou mainly has to worry about is recoil from his own explosions which could cause his head to snap back. This is what a neck brace could be helpful for.
I stated upfront that the neck brace was a stretch, there’s no need to repeat my own words back to me. The only reason I mentioned it at all was because I wanted to acknowledge all of your examples for the sake of a fair argument. Same with Kirishima, like I said, the wheels are dumb. No need to be all dramatic and spin it into me being “crazy hypocritical” when actually I was just engaging candidly with every one of your examples and making a point in your favour.
Why? Well, because you asked. And also mainly because I enjoy hyperanalyzing details and chracter design is an interesting topic that I like talking about. You brought specific characters and examples into the conversation so I wanted to explore those.

it's not a matter of what you think, an armor would slow him down if it was realistic. just like uraraka boots, if i said i don't think she has trouble walking with these, you would just tell me to try walking with something like that on my feet, so i'm telling you what happens when someone wears an armor in real life. i don't know why you all are making this astronaut argument, who said they tried to make her look like one ? to me it obviously looks like a suit a sf character would wear inside a spaceship.
the brick collar could collide with his spine, making him tetraplegic or simply killing him. if i type neck brace on google, and don't think i'll find anything that looks similar to bricks.
(you said "may be" that's why i repeated it and took that part out) i do like a bit of spice when arguing, it was not my intention to be rude or to insult you, i apologize if i offended you. i'll be careful.
even if you're admitting my points, you're putting them on a different level with the way you're phrasing it :
bakugo and kirishima "may be a strech" "pretty weird" => uraraka "ridiculous" "absolutely" "extremely" surely you can notice the difference
even if i admitted uraraka design is dumber, the difference wouldn't be significative enough for you to act so differently if you were being fair.
ye that's perfectly fine i enjoy it too that's not what i'm talking about. if we both agree on calling these few design accessories stupid, then why comparing them when they are more or less equally bad ? if one was good and the other was bad then we could make a conclusion and say female characters costumes don't have as much effort put into them compared to male's. if you want to do a male female comparison i believe you need more exemples.

Same applies to all the other female pros. Even with female pros we do know better, like Midnight and Mt Lady, are given the shaft compared to the male ones.
Stars n Stripes is an unintended but still poor example. I think Hori intended for her to balance out the more male dominated hero world. By making her the single most powerful hero... ever. But she's still introduced in a terribly rushed way. Still gets killed. And remained mostly pointless to the plot as a whole other than to nerf the vaguely all powerful main villain.
Now put that with how Nagant, Midnight, and other women in MHA are treated. And you got a bad time. On their own, they're small and don't matter much. But they keep piling up.

Mina got done so dirty. I love her character design, her personality, and her power is really neat. She has literally one line of "I have to be really careful with my power so I don't hurt others", but that concept could have gone so much further. With good writing, she'd teach Deku control and observing surroundings because she's used her power carefully her entire life. She could actually use her powers more than just skidding around, or tiny little splashes for specific moments. Hell have a moment where she's done holding back and just melts a building or something and does some serious collateral damage. MHA isn't afraid of doing some deeper topics, and certainly isn't afraid of having devastating physical consequences happen to surroundings, and I feel Mina could have been such a good use of that. Deku's power was always about hurting him, and the glossing over of that sheer power hitting someone for the most part was written off unless the plot needed it, and of course only to villians.
She also had another moment in the more recent season (SPOILERS)
where the villian from her backstory appears. I was thinking "Oh neat she actually gets her moment, she'll overcome her fear". Nope. Kirishima saves the day again, making the plot about him instead. She was shown as so completely weak and hopeless and it was like a reverse character arc.

Spinner's whole deal is that he's a Stain supporter, and Uraraka's motive is literally the one thing Stain hates the most. It practically writes itself: "Person who hates heroes that work for money VS a hero that works for money." It would be perfect for progressing Spinner's character, while also giving Uraraka some more fight scenes of her own.

What is more baffling about Momo's ability (reinforcing that it is all "fan service") is that while she is producing sometimes extremely large objects like cannons, her breast NEVER SHRINK. If she is converting the "lipids"/fat cells in her body to make other things.... well.... she should lose "fat" mass in the areas where she uses those transformations.
Take Fat Gum for example. He also manipulates fat though in a different way and when he burns through that in his energy conversion, he becomes skinny and needs to eat it back up. Funny isnt it, how Momo or any part of her does not shrink... ever.... even a little

I think it's also important to note that characters that don't receive as much "fan service", like Todoroki and Kaksuki, still have massive fan bases and are idolised/adored by a staggering number of people. The only times I can remember Todoroki being in a potentially revealing outfit are the results of him using his fire quirk and naturally burning a portion of his clothes off; a situation that makes sense as this happens when he's not wearing his specially designed hero costume and the man is producing FIRE. There are no gratuitous close shots, no one comments on his revealed skin, and yet he has a massive following of fans who absolutely love him regardless. Other characters comment on how handsome he is, but these are said with respect and adoration , and serve to show that while others find him attractive, that is not all they see. They are equally as fascinated with his looks as they are with his abilities, because it is his competency that makes him attractive even beyond his looks. When you compare this treatment with that of the girls, the difference is stark. They are constantly being placed in compromising positions, either because their outfits "malfunction" (like in the case of Momo's ridiculous outfit which is seemingly designed to rip every time she uses her quirk) or because a male character decides to aggressively sexualise them either by groping or tricking them into situations engineered to titillate the men in the show and on the other side of the screen.
What I'm trying to say is that male characters like Todoroki occasionally have revealing moments, but these are secondary to their character, happening after they've established their personality, abilities, and competency, and are usually the result of them performing a feat designed to prop them up as impressive and therefore these characters still produce fan bases that love them despite a lack of "sexy" scenes. For women, these moments are a constant stream that supercedes development and personality, and this demonstrates a clear heirachy where a woman's sexuality is placed above her character.

    • @RobotScarlet
      @RobotScarlet Год назад +55

So many people use the fact that there are male characters that exist that are half, if not almost entirelly naked and compare it to how female characters are displayed as a gotcha moment. "Here we showcase how it's all exactly the same, end of" without... analyzing that what they are showing is nowhere near the same. I will always remember the many dudes that give characters like He-man and Kratos from God of War as examples of male sexuality/fanservice for women and it's uh... Not the case at all?
He-man and Kratos were not designed with women in mind, whatsoever. Kratos, for example, gets around and you can activate bonus scenes where you press a bunch of buttons and have sex with a few if not several different women in a matter of seconds, so in-universe he is sexually desirable. But his design was not made to titillate women. It was made as a male-power fantasy. The "ideal" male body.
What men are supposed to want to have, or at least fantasize about becoming/being. Sure, there will be women that are attracted to those designs and will like the naked aspect but they are an exception to the rule and his design was not made with them in mind.
Even when shows try the "male fanservice for women" in the same vein as female fanservice, it is never done quite like it. So much is lacking that comparing the two is almost always impossible.
So whenever I see people say that Bakugou and Kirishima for example, are equal part sexualized by the show because they have muscles and have been shirtless before, it feels... Dumb as hell? The framing just isn't the same.

One point that could be brought up is Kirishima’s costume. It’s pretty much topless for little to no reason, somewhat similarly to Momo’s. The difference here is that there aren’t unnecessary moments of gawking at Kirishima’s body. Another point to be addressed was the fact that when the students put in instructions and requests for their costumes, the costume designers would often take liberties such as adding heels to Uraraka’s costume. (They completely changed Mineta’s costume from his original design, which I find hilarious.) Kirishima and Momo may or may not have wanted their costumes to be designed this way, with the unnecessary revealing themes. Their characters are not (canonically speaking) to blame for their outfits, UNLIKE MIDNIGHT. Midnight literally had her outfit custom designed and could’ve had it easily changed at any time, but didn’t, showing that she literally WANTED to be objectified and sexualized.

I really like the addition of commenting that when guys say that men in video games are sexualized as well that it’s no level close to the sexualization of women. People’s brothers and fathers walk around the house shirtless all the time. Being shirtless does not equate to fan service! 😅
They really think we’re thirsting over the same muscly, jacked up, roided up protagonists (and no shame to those who do), but just like the other commenter said that wasn’t made for women. A lot of women have to go to a completely different genre (yaoi) where we’re not even the object of desire!!!
If I hear one more man talk about Free!, one more time… they don’t seem to understand that they have to keep referring to the same anime that was released in 2013, but a show can be released tomorrow with male fan service literally tomorrow.

Also, yes hagakure should have an outfit like mirio but it's possible that because it's her 1st year and first outfit that she either can't get one made, she didn't think of that and it's probably next to impossible to get a blood sample from one of her veins for the dna

The outfit just doesn't make sense except there needed to be some titties out.
Midnight's outfit is a failure to me. I know many people don't agree but based on her powers, based on her personality and the whole dominatrix thing she has going on it's terrible and looks ugly. A dominatrix goes all out with her look and she's not only tame, the wildest thing she's got going for her is her titties being out. How can you conceive of an invisibility power and not do an outfit that goes invisible WITH them? All she has are literal gloves and shoes. They (sort of) thought out an outfit for Uraraka but couldn't do the same to Hagakure? There's many ways to get DNA that doesn't require syringes or veins. Alright, I'm not defending this shit, and yes, the Mirio=Momo argument, I understand and fully agree with. But how the hell would it work for Toga. Mirio phases his body through stuff, Momo creates things and it pops out of her skin. Considering these are all just molecular of her own lipids, I feel it makes sense for her suit to allow the objects to phase through. But Toga is a bit of a different case. I mean, her entire body morphs using someone else's DNA. Her entire quirk is based off of adding foreign DNA to her system. Even if a suit could somehow be feasible for Toga that accounts for this impossibly random variable, I don't think it would fall in the same ballpark as Mirio or the theoretical Momo suit, logistically or technologically.... The problem with "pervert" characters like Mineta is that if their behavior is shown as ridiculous, portraying sexual misconduct as a running gag ultimatly passes it as harmless. And Mineta isn't the butt of the joke for being an harrasser but for being unlucky in his attempts. Save for that, he never faces consequences for his actions, he isn't kicked out of school or ostracized by the class, the teachers never punish him or make him attend disciplinary hearing.

If they'd show that he faces some serious consequences for this or it's made a SERIOUS/lesson part of the story then Mineta being absolutely horrible would probably be...excuseable...once or twice. Not gonna lie I get a chuckle out of people who take Mineta's antics seriously. Obviously it was done for comedic effect, and every time Mineta goes on and does this a handful of times he is dealt accordingly and always backfires. If the girls, let alone his classmates truly felt that he was such a threat, they would've reported him. I'm pretty confident to say that while they know he's a perv, they do know he's not a bad person that does it with the intent on hurting them. Annoying and bothersome, absolutely. Malicious? That's where I draw the line. While Mineta is a perv, what people refuse to admit or give him credit is that he has cut down on his perverted antics, and the will knit pick the guy even if he says the smallest thing. Even though we've seen other anime characters do it such as Roshi, Jiraiya, Melodias, etc to name a few. At least Mineta has the excuse that he's a teenager. But I digress, maybe if he had a cooler design or a cooler quirk he wouldn't be as hated. While he is a pervert and I will not take anything away from your reasons for disliking him as you are in your right, there have been countless perverts in anime, some just as bad and even worse than Mineta.

I get what you mean but it's not like this is new. Not to mention that all of the girls would destroy mineta in a 1v1, so I don't think they feel unsafe. If Mineta was as overwheleming and skillful as Bakugou, sure, but he's a midget who has a great quirk wasted on him due to his lack of skill. 'sides, MHA isn't about that, its about Deku becoming the best hero, everyone he's met, and everything he learns up until he becomes the best. Putting any greater relevance on someone who has no relevance in Deku's journey isn't good for the story. The only reason a lot of characters even have development is because most if not all manga are third-person omniscient. Finally, the viewers aren't stupid. 14-18 year old guys don't need Horikoshi to have an episode or two on mineta for them to know that sexual assault is bad. If someone needs that lesson taught to them, they aren't the right demographic for shonen.

      Look at mairimashita Iruma Kun
The character Caim, he isn't as close as a terrible character towards mineta.
His punishment for making girls uncomfortable is to literally put him in the class for troubled students that are seen by the whole school as a joke.
And whenever he makes a sexual joke the teachers/students look at him and sometimes scold him.
We also find out WHY he is a pervert.
His family were really strong demons who thought they could defeat the demon king but of course, lost. They were given a second chance and now they're on the demon kings side.
His mother was explaining to him on how you have to respect him and some other things (he was a little kid when she was saying this)
      And he misunderstood it.
He still respects the girls tho as he doesn't want them hurt and compliments them sometimes.

By this logic, Toru’s hair can be fashioned into a costume, she can be clothed, and still maintain her stealth. In fact it would actually improve her stealth since her current outfit (gloves and boots) are visible. Think next time you try to rationalize an underage character being naked.

Horikoshi is actually INCREDIBLY good at drawing bodies in ways that make them feel like they have very real-world weight and girth to them. ive genuinely never seen a mangaka who draws female bodies with such a well done balance of both muscle and fat for athleticism before. Momo has an especially egregious case to me- in the manga she full on has rolls sometimes. shes actually pretty chunky, which makes sense for her because of how her quirk affects her body- she needs to maintain that good balance of both useable fat and muscle through the food she eats to make stuff. but in the anime she looks like she could share clothing sizes with Jirou if it werent for how much more boob she has. its pointless and stupid, and immediately rubbed me the wrong way

Yep. It's a pity that feminist media analysis settled on "the male gaze" as a term for this phenomenon.
Men are frequently uncomfortable with this sort of material just showing up out of nowhere for no good reason, but the male gender role means we're supposed to shut up about it and be grateful for any sexual shit thrown in our direction. And because we're punished socially if we do complain about it, we don't speak up. It isn't that we don't speak up because we actually enjoy this garbage. It's because we're put in danger when we do speak up, and we learn that we are in danger from a very young age.
But feminist analysis has long lagged behind on understanding the pressures that those subject to the male gender role suffer under, and continue to make the mistake of assuming we are universally benefited just because women are harmed. It isn't universal, but it's way too common.

@@YouthRightsRadicalwell, it's called the male gaze because men are expected to be purely sexual "creatures". You and others like you may not be comfortable with such overt fetish fuel and fanservice, but the expectation is that you, as a man, will. Sexism impacts everyone, and unfortunately men were the ones to impose those standards onto themselves way back when and now; women of those times took a less active role in that sexism, teaching misogyny/brutal gendered expectations to their children.
The video uploader clearly didn't say all men were this way, with her repeated stating of "assumed straight male audience". Aside from queer men, there's obviously a huge group of straight men that are disturbed by the sexualization of characters and irritated by the expectation that they'll enjoy it.
While I agree with you that men shouldn't be framed as hypersexual ""creatures"" and such, I disagree that feminist media or perspectives are the problem. I don't know what your relation to feminism is, but all I can say as someone who's learned a whole lot is that feminism is not what you think it is by the name. Yes, at first it was intended to show women were as competent as men, but over time that goal changed to "showing every gender as equals". Feminism isn't putting women above men (despite many who say so and the few women that do this in the name of unironic girlboss feminism), or saying men have to be "feminine", or anything else of the sort. At it's most basic level, it's the refusal of tired old gender stereotypes that hurt women and men, such as women being weak or men being strong. Men have emotions too, and should be allowed to express them without shame or mockery. Women can dress however they want without being shamed for it. Men can have close and intimate relationships with their fathers and male friends without it being seen as inherently gay. So on, so forth.
Sorry for the ramble, but I hope I can show a new perspective on feminism. It's so often bastardized and lied about that I understand your initial thoughts, but please know it's not how you think it is at all. On a more serious note, there are people who care for you and won't let some stupid gender get in the way of you being human. But again, your issue with the patriarchy's framing of men is completely understandable and justified.
Even if it's fiction, even if you gave the benefit of the doubt that people weren't that gullible, even if it's framed as harmless jokes, sexism in media affects us all.

      @YouthRightsRadical Год назад +32

@@Vesperad0 I didn't say feminism is responsible for this. This sort of messaging predates organized feminism by a considerable margin. What I said was that feminist analysis lags behind in terms of recognizing the harms that the male gender role inflicts on men relative to its understanding of the harms the female gender role inflicts on women.
I will say you're making a hell of an assumption when you claim that "men" were the ones who made up gender roles whole cloth at some past point. Nothing about what we know of sociology says that "men" were ever some unified, omnipotent cabal who were actively and consciously deciding how to structure society in a way to actively exclude women. And decided that all men should forever be barred from major parts of the human experience.
Fortunately, academic feminist literature may have a ways to go in terms of coming to grips with the issues those of us subjected to the male gender role struggle with, but they are far more nuanced than this bizarre conspiracy theory that anti-feminists propagate that "patriarchy" refers to some ancient conspiracy of all men against all women. Much of it is still bad at understanding that "patriarchy" hurts men without the qualification that it's not just "backfiring" from an intent to hurt women, but because it is harmful to men in and of itself. But very little will talk about what "men" imposed back in ye olden days as if there was ever a time when "men" were able to, or interested in, conspiring against themselves and against their own loved ones.
Everyone needs to remember that "the patriarchy" is not the same thing as "men".

Tokoyami has a spirit who, presumably, cannot go through solid space. (We know Dark Shadow is a solid object because we've seen him interact with the physical world countless times) The spirit comes from his body, and yet this spirit has no problem getting through his clothing?
The only time this whole "they need to show skin for their quirk" has ever been applied is for female characters and Kirishima. It's not even a solid excuse if the logic of it is being pushed aside for her male counterparts

It has always been pretty obvious that when people describe stuff like this as egregious, they don't necessarily mean sex and sexuality is bad. It is entirely an issue of focus and what a character exists for.

No. The girls are canonically 15-16 and 100% sexualised for the male gaze. Non of them are old/intelligent to understand their sexuality and none of them own it either. This is just one of the bigger issues with shonen anime.

@@sabsain2399 not to say that the over sexualization of them is okay (cause its not) but generally from my own knowledge and understanding 15/16 is actually when people start exploring that side of themselves more, with in many countries 16 directly being the age where you're allowed to have sex with others your own age. I've heard most people either first have sex when 15/16 or when 20+.

exactly, except that 99% of the characters are 15-16 yr olds and still manage to be sexualized (and trust me it gets worse with the nsfw content out there) - it's sad that this isn't talked about ENOUGH in the mha community.

Also Momo in the show is much skinner than she is in the manga, Momo’s quirk works from fat cells so shes chubbier in the manga
It’s not just momo either, most of the girls are a little chubby due to them eating to maintain the calories they burn while exercising, they just don’t bulk like the guys do so they are chubbier, they even downsized Mina’s muscles because she’s much more built in the manga 🤔
Edit: I also believe the girls are chubbier because if they get hit it’ll be less of an impact and not hurt them as much, Kirishima learnt that from fat gum I believe and he isn’t built anymore, he’s a bit chubby :)

I’m not super into the video so idk if she has mentioned this, but the animation team made chubby females much skinnier for the sake of “animation being easier” Not that I agree with it but that’s the official reason why characters like ochako and momo are sized down

Seriously, Nejire being one of the big three is basically just having a token female character in a group of three characters. .
Nejire has a powerful and interesting Quirk, but is consistently sideline. By comparison, Sun Eater and Lemilion both get to showcase their skills, by taking on villains just by themselves. Nejire, doesn't have that despite a Quirk that can take down big villains. There are some people saying: Well, Nejire did have an arc and spotlight during the beauty pageant. Like, wow. If a hero's great arc was a pageant then why be in a school where you are trained to be a hero??
Ryuku, a hero who literally can transform to a Dragon, which means she could be very strong, yet doesn't showcase it at all. Love that bits of additional scene in the recent scene with her, but the fact that Endeavour seemingly had more physical strength than a literal dragon is so disappointing. I mean, Endeavour is muscular but his quirk is just Fire manipulation. Sure he is muscular but Ryuky can turn to a giant Giant Dragon! She can do more!
I could go on but, eh, MHA is just disappointing in a lot of aspects...

@DIO Over Heaven well…the anime magically had enough time to develop many male characters, but not a single female student got a proper arc? like come on even the most useless guys in bnha had better moments if not arcs to show their growth
they literally have no excuse to not put as much effort in the female cast

Who…the fuck…cares? Nejire is not a token female character, they’re just…a character. Oh yeah, you also completely forgot about Mirko who literally took on multiple high end nomus like a badass and fought until her body was torn apart. If that’s not enough for you, then too bad, stop watching MHA and go find another anime that will conform to your sensibilities.
