I love how the only reason Bakugo won against Uraraka in the tournament arc is because he didn't underestimate her, unlike most of the characters who were watching. Iida, Deku and Ochako being our wholesome trio is completely tossed aside because they aren't tragic enough characters and are 'too nice' when more could have been done with Iida trying to live up his family's expectations and protecting their legacy at an extreme degree and Ochako being at such a disadvantage as a poorer member of society making her have to do as they need so she can get even a drop of cash for her family. @@punipalsayshi2644 I can see where you're coming from, I also wouldn't mind if Uraraka was a bit of a more prominent action girl trope, but I can tell that's not what she was meant to explore. She explored it a bit, her loss to Bakugou gave her that fighting spirit and had her practice martial arts, but getting stronger in combat isn't number one focus because she's a rescue hero. She's very much a "save to win" kind of hero, and most aspects of her character revolve around her desire to save people. She wanted to save her family from hardship and poverty, she wanted to save heroes when they need saving, and now with Toga it's a question about whether or not villains can be saved.
As much as the Toga thing does have a connection to their mutual crush in Midoriya, it doesn't bother me because a) that's not the only connection they have, and b) Uraraka is actively telling Toga they are not just a couple of girls talking about their crushes and that they are heroes and villains respectively. That went into a conversation of who heroes should be saving, self-expression vs self-repression, and so on and so forth. Her life doesn't revolve around Deku, it includes him to some extent (which is the case for almost all the characters).
Her confrontation was initially about Midoriya, sure (well I mean, it wasn't the actual initial reason, because Toga feels the same about Asui and that has nothing to do with Midoriya. Toga wanted to be their friends, she wanted to be seen as normal while also not suppressing her desires anymore, and that's the whole reason she sought out Uraraka as a friend, by highlighting what they have in common), but Uraraka refused to play along with that. And then Twice died, and Toga couldn't fathom why a hero would chose to kill him, and she went to her two "friends" who she "loves" who are heroes to ask "what do you want to do to me", and that is all outside her crush on Midoriya. So I don't think it's entirely about Deku, I think it's partially about Deku.

For point A to B, you did have a point of giving Ochako her own ideals within thw perception of money and society, but there is a problem...
The simple problem for it, is to how it will be truly connected to Uraraka's character as merely a student, since she can be clumsy sometimes, and can be very clueless...
Remember, her quirk makes everyone float right? And that is her character, mainly to how quirks represents a persons idealism. For example, vast and volcanic as Bakugo personalities are as same as his quirk, and Iida is so straightforward that he always jumps into conclusions, making him a machine that always go straight line...
Quirks are the basis of MHA, and gravity can also give an ideal of romance in place, since it shift attraction in a gravitational state, according to General Relativity, that is why Ochako is a candidate of having a love affair, alongside Himiko Toga, who loves to copy someone she simps for, as well as copying their quirks...
But there is a twist, some of the manga panels act differently from the adapted anime, like for example, having Bakugo "full faced" seeing Uraraka fall in the manga, became "half faced" when it comes to anime...
Uraraka where supposed to be the gravity between Deku and Bakugo's relationship, since Bakugo and Deku respected and admires Uraraka strenght, but the anime shifted the ideal into a lifeless Uraraka being only a simp for Deku.
If you have read the manga, you will notice many, many differences of why Ochako were getting backlined by the anime, but not in the manga...

    • @flohoshino4974
      @flohoshino4974 Год назад +14

Adding a basis of my argument, Ochako was supposed to be the Big 3, as well as Bakugo and Deku (it was honestly the case, since even in the MHA: Team Up Mission, this trio were the first team to be introduced, naming thw chapter "Chapter 0", but the popularity of Todoroki influenced Horikoshi to skip Uraraka, since Todoroki has the most popularity poll on him than Uraraka, which is somehow a reason of why she became backlined/support/main character. It is not the shipping that destroys Uraraka, it is how low her popularity was against people who ship BakuDeku, TodoDeku, or even TodoBakuDeku. I mean I even barely see KacChako or IidaChako in the context, or any ship that involves other characters except Deku, became her downfall due to popularity. Heck even KiriBaku has more followers than IzuOcha and KacChako combined 😐
Shipping is not really the ones who destroyed Uraraka since her ideals is to how "grounded" she was, as to be said, how willing she would sacrifice in order to grow, and it is one thing that really admires about it, because when shonen manga have romance, it is always the girl or the female character that will fall in love to the main protagonist, but atleast Uraraka is trying, but the one thing that destroys her is to how unpopular her ships is rather than those Yaoi MHA Characters...
Kirishima got more recognition because of the ship, KiriBaku, yet Mina didn't even make out to the line when she was introduced alongside Kirishima, because the ship, KiriMina, is underrated than the KiriBaku...
To be as simple as it should be..
It can be said by only one word...
      ✨Marketing✨
I mean what can I say towards the anime adaptation, they usually do change the projection of the adaptation, according to what is the trend...
Horikoshi's work hits different, when he drew Uraraka, but the adaptation...
Meh... The adaptation is fine, but they always change the topic or even the entry of Uraraka, and always acted more effort, when it is all about Deku, but not Uraraka with other people...
I mean, they did more animation about KiriBaku, but when it is about Uraraka... Man... I was kinda disappointed as well...

I think the main problem with love interests in battle shounen, is that that the MC gets the safest and most boring love intrest, so even if the mangaka can write female characters, the love intrest themselves will be sidelined for more intresting characters as the story goes on. As overdone as tsundere trope is in other anime, that trope lends itself for tragic backstories and easy character development.

A rather alarming issue with most shonen is that the stories are about boys who single-mindedly pursue one goal their whole lives, spending their youth training. They then choose whatever character is the most house-wifey with the least amount of stage presence as their partner, so they have some support in pursuing their “work” in future.

This! And it can be very noticeable in Bleach between Orihime and Rukia. Majority of fanbase wanted IchiRuki endgame BECAUSE she wasn't written like love interests usually are. If Rukia was meant to be Ichigo's love interest I bet her character would get a downgrade. But she was written more like rivals/friends of MCs are so people loved the equal dynamic. Shonen authors needs to stop making characters specifically and obviously as love interests and just make characters who will eventually just happen to fall in love later on. Without having their whole purpose to be in love with MC since episode 1.

Tenya could have, it’s not like it needed to be Bakugo for this. His journey failed to be interesting, as he just backtracks anytime they try to develop him to the angry mess. Like it was so close in that Kindergarten arc, but he just goes back to being the same, with little reflection of said growth elsewhere in his character. He doesn’t even apologise properly to Izuku, he did it while Izuku was getting ganged up by the toxic bomb and his classmates, completely drained from giving a proper response to said apology, barely acknowledging his own part into making Izuku a self sacrificial machine of despair, and didn’t even acknowledge any feelings Izuku had during said apology, it was about Bakugo alone.
Also, last time I checked, actual friends don’t throw spikes into the other’s head to the point of showing brain as part of comedy. Like, what does he offer? That whole prioritising saving than winning, and winning to saving thing doesn’t work because it’s not like Izuku has trouble with winning against villains. Izuku knows full well that he has to win to save, even if saving is his main priority. Bakugo is the only one who needs this comparison, considering how he cannot comprehend saving others. What does Bakugo have on his own?
The cornerstone of the series is Izuku learning to be a hero. It was an expression of old superhero comics in a Shonen setting. It was an alternative look on celebrity culture. It was also once to highlight the flaws of a corrupt society built around Superheroes, but AFO fucked that all up. You could even argue Endeavor trying and failing to make up for his actions was a cornerstone. It certainly wasn’t Bakugo’s circling journey, that’s for sure, and to pretend that was it is disingenuous to the story. Bakugo offers nothing in his time at UA, he’s just needs Izuku for any relevance, compared to Izuku finding his own way through multiple different interactions and views, with a level of character independence you can’t even say Bakugo compares to. Is a worthless sacrifice that did nothing for his character that notable? Is dying again for some nonsense revival by sacrificing a Pro Hero we barely know in the series part of him being a notable cornerstone? Because, it more suggests his presence takes away from MHA as a narrative.

One thing regarding Toga that I find strange is the fact that she was paired up with Uraraka as a "dark reflection" or whatever, when I have always seen Toga as a dark reflection of Deku funnily enough.
She is someone who had to surpress her true self and be cast out by society because of who she was. Because she never received any aid, her fascination with blood which stemmed from her quirk, became a psychotic obsession. She became a villain due to circumstance because of how she was born and a society that wouldn't help her.
Deku is similar in that sense where he got cast out because of the circumstances of his birth. The difference is that he ended up getting help and set towards a path of becoming a hero instead. If we would remove the part of him meeting All Might, Dekus backstory is for all intents and purposes a villains backstory if anything, and I could see him ending up similar to Toga because of that.

I don't think romantic love is real or special, and I think romantic relationships are a bad thing. I think humans should just stop being in romantic relationships. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it. Romance seems like an ugly thing.
Many fathers are hoping that their daughters never date or get married and remain single for their whole life due to the dangers and risks of romantic relationships.
The overprotective father thing is proof that romantic relationships are a bad thing, and that this world would be a much better place without them. If someday that the human race ditches the concept of romance and romantic relationships, and got rid of stuff like dating and marriage, fathers would be happy about it since they wouldn't ever have to worry about their daughters ever dating if that ever happened.
People (especially women) should avoid being in a romantic relationship and be single for life since romantic relationships are dangerous.

She'd need to train to up her tolerance so she could lift more than 3 tons at a time, but there's no reason she couldn't do something like that. I definitely want her to be an effective hero, don't get me wrong, but if Horikoshi isn't going to do anything of note with her at this point, he might as well have made an adult Uraraka working at the docks or something.

Both of whom end up acquiring the world's most powerful Quirk. By the show's own 20% rule, of the at LEAST 100+ characters we've seen... 18 more of them should have been Quirkless. And yet... I actually have a disability that only 20% of the US population has, and you’d be surprised at how rare it is to meet others who have it too, it’s not even like it’s a invisible disability, it’s very visible. But most of the time, unless you go to a convention that’s focused on your type of disabilty (not even your disability exactly, just the disability type) then it’s near impossible to meet or make friends who have the same disability as you. I have a lot of problems with how quirklessness as a disability is shown in the show and manga (especially with how practically every quirkless character ended up getting a quirk) but it’s really not that weird to see only one or two quirkless character In BNHA if there’s no real attempts from the characters to go and meet up with other quirkless people. Which is honestly a shame, I would have loved to see Izuku not only embrace his quirklessness but go and meet other quirkless people.

Same shit happened with Mirio being used as a foil to propel Deku's growth. He's established as the top student and already on the level of pro heroes. He looks goofy but is capable of taking out class 1-A with ease using his quirk. His super strong quirk was also extremely difficult to use but he learned to master it. Then it's revealed that he would have been the one to receive One For All because of Sir Nighteyes recommendation. He wants to save a million people he's jacked, he's like a mini All Might. And then he gets shot with a quirk erasing bullet saving Eri. After he's shot he goes on to prove that you don't need a quirk to be a hero.
Deku's whole initial character revolved around the question of whether you need a quirk to be a hero. And Mirio's sacrifice meant fucking nothing. Deku gives as much as fuck as the writer because this doesn't matter to him.
Mirio gets put in the background until the final arc roles up and he got his fucking quirk back off screen. Then it gets revealed in a flashback that Eri learned to control her powers and gave him back his quirk. His sacrifice still mattered because he didn't know that he would ever get his quirk back but it was such wasted potential.
Imagine a scenario in which Deku questions if needed One For All to become a hero. Or he just decided that Mirio truly deserved it and tried to convince him to take it. Both of these are far more interesting than Deku beating Overhaul and just moving on to the next arc. If you're going to dedicate other characters to develop your main one at least use the opportunities your given.

He's a beacon of light and super humble about it hence why he gave Tamaki the nickname and then hero name of Suneater as to him, Tamaki has more potential if he could get over his issues.
I've seen people argue that their first encounter with Eri proves why Deku has the power but I would argue it proves Togata is the better candidate as while Deku would always so the heroic thing, that doesn't always mean it's the smart thing and he knows it. Togata in that moment acted with restraint and caution, two things that Deku's lack of is SUPPOSED to be a detriment, potentially lethal to him even.

They should have time to develop slowly, as Deku builds up his confidence, and have Uraraka slowly make advances on him, taking the lead by being the more outgoing person of the two, and thus building their crush on each other, maybe giving them sweet moments together. Instead, they just make Ochako be a fangirl and blush everytime Deku's even mentioned, while Deku is just being like "ooooh cute girl is cute that girl sure is cute she is nice to me and really cute". The only reason Hori could come up with to justify pairing Uraraka and Toga as nemesis was because they both liked Deku. But Toga is actually a much more interesting character and no wonder she is a fan favorite.
What's even the point of Uraraka's romance with Deku if her relationship with him is not explored? It will even be revolved like last minute, so it's not even a romance, it's just her crushing on him for more than 6 seasons while Deku thinks about more important stuff. If they end up together at the end of the series and their romance is not explored, why even put it in the series? Why give her this crush instead of letting her stand on her own? Even if we say "but Deku also likes her" (which I believe btw), why is that that he can just focus on the important stuff and fighting villains and training not having time to think about his romantic feelings, while she only thinks about that? It's a clear bias against female characters.
Deku has more interesting dynamics with both Bakugou and Shouto, so his relationship with Uraraka should be at LEAST just as deep to justify the jump from friendship to romance. Like, Deku will have the best most amazing open-hearted converation with Shouto or Bakugou and we should go like "what a great friendship", but then he and Uraraka will talk 3 seconds about nonsense and we should go "they love each other so much, such a beautiful romance". What makes his empty relationship with Uraraka a romance while his much more interesting relationships with the dudes are just friendships?
Hori just sucks at writing relationships between men and women, especially if he intends to make them a couple.

@@d6421-e9c If Hori isn't good at writing romance, and he isn't imo, then he should not put romance in his story. It's as simple as that. You don't write things you don't know how to write. And if there is not enough time to put romance into it, then even more reasons not to put romance. At all.
It's a shounen, focus on the action for ALL characters, not just the boys, and let the fandoms do the shipping, because the fandom will do the shipping anyway and they won't pick the canon ship you as an author want because it sucks.
Imagine how MANY things Uraraka could have done if only she spent her time not only obsessing over Deku and helping him. Her role in the war arc was useless, she talked to Toga a bit, clean up the place after the important characters were done fighting and that's it. Obviously the main trio and Iida got to go against the big baddies, but, apart from Uraraka, Asui and I think Koda, the rest of class A at least influenced the plot by taking down Machia. Even Mushroom Girl had more impact than Uraraka on the war arc. And there are people in class A that have worse quirks than Uraraka.
She is Deku's emotional support, she is being given less and less hero work to do. She was fierce in S2 and then never again even if villains continued arriving. You can't show so much fighting potential in a tournament and then never use it in a real fight. This video explains everything so well.
Momo had much better moments, interacted with more characters and had an overall better character arc. Yes sure she may or may not have a crush on Todoroki (another boring af ship, but I hope this one doesn't become canon), but it's not the centre of her character and she can act on her own. Even Asui and Jiro are more indipendent as characters than Uraraka. Uraraka WAS a great character, but she was wasted. I had to skip many of her scenes starting from S3 during rewatch because it was so boring and cringe (except the end of S6 where she was great, but still only because it was about Deku).
Iida too got basically ignored by the story, but he doesn't revolve around Deku all the time, I would say he was pushed more towards Todoroki. Uraraka doesn't even interact with Iida that much anymore and it's sad. Wouldn't have been interesting to show how her and Iida cope with Deku basically ditching them to go with Bakugou and Todoroki? That would have been awesome to see.
And overall the ship is boring. Their scenes are boring. The vibe is boring. It's just fluff that never takes off because they won't get together before the end of the show because it is indeed a shounen. But by then not having realized his crush on her will have let Deku focus on the ACTUAL important stuff, while her entire story will have been wasted on the crush. You see the problem? If you can't develop a romance and theirs is NOT developed, why put it in? Why can't the female lead just not fall in love with the MC? Whyyyyyy
Just to have a boring ship the majority of the fandom will hate anyway because there are more interesting relationships. And forcing the ship down everyone's throat is making fans hate Uraraka even more.
It's very telling how there are MHA ships in the fandom that are WAY more popular than Deku/Uraraka. Because those relationships actually got developed in the series and became interesting, while Deku and Uraraka's relationship was never developed pass the "they are cute together and laugh and have similar ideas". Deku and Bakugou got so much attention and developed their relationship, but it was never done for Uraraka and Deku even if the romance is theirs.
When your canon ship, the one that includes the protagonist and the main girl of the series, isn't even Top3 in the most popular ships in the fandom, you have failed at writing romance and that's a fact. And if you have failed at writing it, you shouldn't have put it in the story.

Shipping wasn't really the problem with Uraraka, in fact it's one of the only ships on the show that actually makes sense and has canonical material. I think what really hurt characters like Uraraka and Iida was the rise of Todoroki. His entire family conflict becomes part of the main plot, and thus giving him a large amount of screentime in most arcs became obligatory to advance his storyline. The original "Power Trio" of sorts was Deku/Uraraka/Iida, with Bakugou as the rival. But when Todoroki gained the focus he did and Horikoshi established him/Deku/Bakugou as the new Big Three, Uraraka and Iida got completely pushed by the wayside. If you're telling me that he wanted to have romance between Deku and Bakugo, then I would say it is not argumentative enough to assume he would do it, because this is a SHONEN, and shonen are mostly not into romance...

The true trio that was been scrapped entirely is the trio between Bakugo, Deku, and Uraraka, which gives the Idea of OFA...
Bakugo gives the idea of "Winning", Midorya gives the idea of "Saving", while the most important part of being a hero is by Uraraka which is "To Win and Save"
"Helping those who need help even if your a person is considered as an act of hero" gives the idea in All Might that "Meddling with others is an essence of a hero" and Uraraka's qoutes as "If heroes are in need of saving, who will be there to save those heroes?"
In which, this is the reason Uraraka is important to the storyline, as she is also a keystone to the story, alongside Bakugo, Deku, Todoroki, All Might and the Class 1 A, and even Aizawa and the heroes...

But the fandom doesn’t think that’s okay because we think she HAS to fight to be a strong female character like Mikasa and Nezuko. Combat should be mostly left to other characters while she trains in first aid and basic life support, survival training, psychology, tactics and equipment, diverting damage, negotiation, etc. Instead everyone wants those short moments where she fights someone who is weak, doesn’t take her serious, or doesn’t even know she’s there just to hype her up and claim anyone who objects is trying to be a hater. (Focusing her on being a RESCUE hero would make her self-defense look even better and more realistic especially if it came out of no where.) If she has martial arts as a hobby that’s one thing but to act as if she can keep up with Tsu, Baku, Tokoyami, Ojiro, etc would get her killed.😰

I think there are three main issues with Uraraka:
    1) Shounen as a genre doesn’t care for female characters at all. Like, legitimately, female characters are either played off as strong b*tches or as side characters serving romantic plots. There usually isn’t any in-between and I think it’s because male writers from the genre typically don’t know how women think and so just write them in for realism and to have romance arcs. They try too hard to make a “woman” character and fail at making a real character because of it. Women are a lot like men, and all it really takes to write one realistically is to write them like any other character.
    2) Horikoshi doesn’t care about any character that isn’t All Might, Aizawa, Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki, Endeavor, Shigaraki, and Dabi. He legitimately has given almost no REAL screen time to anyone else, unless it’s some generic backstory without much detail or a side-fight that isn’t interesting at all. Like, we barely know anything beyond surface details about most of Class 1-A, and even Deku’s main love interest, Uraraka, has gotten basically no real screen time since the first few episodes. And by that I mean screen time that furthers the character and adds depth to her. You can’t just rush through the story in less than one canonical school year and then TELL me that the characters have developed; you needed to SHOW me. And that’s why Uraraka’s bs development arc that we see when Deku returns to UA is just too little, too late. It’s just a pity that Horikoshi created so many interesting characters and a school system that last three whole years, only to rush us through with minimal character interactions within one school year.
    3) I’ve seen it time and time again and it just makes me angry here with IzuOcha. Horikoshi tried so hard to make them look like a preordained couple to ward off any other ships that he made it feel forced and unnatural. Instead of developing the ship naturally and just writing them as a dynamic, he instead injected cringy awkward romance into basically every interaction they ever had, which made the ship just feel cringy and awkward as hell. I actually began kinda hating Uraraka around the Summer Training Camp Arc because I got tired of seeing her obsess over Deku and act so idiotically. There’s a reason why Bakudeku and Tododeku (as cringe and toxic as the first one is) both outrank IzuOcha in terms of popularity, and there’s also a reason why Deku is regularly shipped with characters like Jiro and Momo and even Toga in such large droves. It’s because Uraraka is a largely static and unnatural romantic interest. When every meaningful interaction of theirs is so full of awkward crush energy, it takes away from any natural chemistry or feeling that the audience might have felt between them.

Seeing that video makes me think that's probably why the Ochako and Bakugo ship (as a romance or as a friendship or partnership) came to be in the fandom as it was mostly based on their dynamic in their fight against each other. Bakugo was almost the only one who took her seriously, Ochako was her absolute best at that moment of the story, searching independence and trying to push her limits, and Ochako being Ochako she didn't have any preconceived perception of Bakugo either (not just angry dude 24/7). So people saw in that ship an opportunity to combine this with mutual character development. Ochako to continue to find new ways to use her ability, not downplay what she is capable of, push her limits, become stronger and stand up for herself. And Bakugo learning more about cooperation and rescue and showing a side of Bakugo that is more tactful or empathic or sensible (in his own way, kinda like his mother I think). Now it makes a bit more sense to me.
Not that I don't think it can't be done by their own will and individual experience alone but this relationship (no matter the status) could have made it even more interesting (because unexpected).

In the end her resolution was pretty original for a shonen and her final fight with Toga is one of the highlights of the last arc. Her crush had an actual purpose that wasn't just making her the love interest.
Deku couldn't understand Toga, he thought her way of loving was wrong, which made her angry. But Ochako managed to reach her and understand her thanks to both of them liking Deku. Ochako admits to herself and to Toga that she fell in love with Deku and she empathizes with Toga and sees her hurt and humanity, all the abuse she suffered because people considered her love as "wrong". Without the crush on Deku, Ochako wouldn't have been able to relate to Toga. Yes, in the end Toga still died, but she died happy the way she wanted thanks to Ochako finally understanding her.
So the crush's purpose wasn't to put Ochako and Deku together, it was to make Ochako reach her own villain and become a better person. In fact she doesn't even get together with Deku in the end and it doesn't matter because we see her dream come true: she became a hero, has her own team and she is working to save kids with difficult quirks like she couldn't save Toga. Out of the main cast she is probably the one who is changing society the most. Whether she will get with Deku or not, even whether she still loves him or moved on, is totally irrelevant. That is not a "regular shonen" ending and it surprised me in a positive way.
I also really liked how she tried to bottle up her pain after the fight, all her guilt, and this time it was Deku who supported her. Ochako was always there emotionally for him, she was the hero being there when heroes suffer, but when she needed help Deku came. It wasn't a romantic scene and it shouldn't have been, but it did make their relationship more mutual and I appreciate that. In the end she was a well written character and the payoff is worth the whole crush subplot

until it wasn’t. season three came out, and ochaco was pushed aside. it’s okay, i thought. i liked todoroki as a character as well so i was fine w him getting more spotlight. i thought it would just be for that arc, that deku would return to his origin friend group with iida and ochaco. season 3 kind of put me off the series, and at that point i was kind of growing out of my MHA phase anyway.
season 4 was the final nail in the coffin. i couldn’t even finish it. any character that wasn’t shoto, bakugou, or deku got little further development regardless of the groundwork that was laid down previously for it. ochaco disappointed me greatly. i was SO excited to see a female hero that was actually badass, could do things, even had a morally questionable motive. someone i could imagine to be a real person. a woman i could see myself in. it was all ripped away as she was watered down to what most female shounen characters are from the jump. a love interest that doesn’t do jack shit for the plot except give the MC a motive to fight. so saddening.

One is that his iffy relationship with Bakugo gets waay more focus and introspection than all the others so his influence is just felt a lot more. And two, Deku just has more interesting relationships with other characters cause they aren't constricted to just being "cute"(Todoroki,Iida,Tsuyu, hell even Tomura). I don't like using movie characters cause naturally one-offs but Melissa was someone in regards to him that could've been taken in a fun direction regarding their quirkless viewpoints or Mei and her weird eccentrics whenever she pops up from time to time beyond just like the run of the mill boob joke. Don't think Uraraka is bad for being a simple fluffy romance as there is a place for that but the story just doesn't do enough with that from his side to make it really feel worth it. Bakugo is more of a heroine from a traditional standpoint than she is.
EDIT: Well now that the dust has truly settled and things are locked in my opinion is a bit more posistive. Still undercooked a bit but Act 3 of MHA as a whole does do a lot of good for Deku and Ochako's relationship, even if it neglects a few others for it. I'd give it a B-. The main reason for that is arguably because Bakugou and Deku's complex and fucked up relationship is so rooted deep into both their hero journeys and personalities: Deku's perseverance is a result of his idolization for AM and Bakugou and having been pushed around to give up his dream; and Bakugou's personality is a result of his lifelong inferiority complex because he always feared the heroic nature of Deku and his journey to become a better person and hero. It's almost insane for a writer to leave such a fertile terrain unexplored. It's the same as Shoto and his dad, Shigaraki and hero society. The main problem with Deku and Uraraka's bond is that their relationship has been surface-level at best since the start of the series: They eat together, laugh together, etc... Iida and Shoto have shared trauma and ideology with Deku, Kirishima and Deku had shared perspective of protection. Uraraka had nothing in common with Deku until the narration forced her too.

I've always wondered why tournament arcs never used a Double Elimination system. It allows certain characters to much easier prove themselves as worthy fighters while still allowing the main character to be the one to take down the BBEG. It's a simple adjustment that fixes so many issues I have with shounen anime.

It's probably so the brackets can remain even. Aside from certain exceptions, there'll be an even number of people in the finals of a tournament, so if for example both players got eliminated in the semi-finals, the person who won the other semi-final matchup wouldn't win automatically. It makes logistical sense.
Of course, there are certain cases where they do a kind of dual elimination, it just depends on circumstance and how incapacitated the fighters are.

I feel like Ochako is in a unique position where she actually gets the same done to her as most of the cast, being completely sidelined with only small moments here and there, but because she is the love interest as well this makes her lack of focus worse because it’s seem as writing her off as the token love interest. In all honesty I don’t think her being the love interest is the problem (some of the ideas the series put forth prove that that aspect could work), her problem is that the series just never gives her the time to make those ideas work just like every other side character in MHA which is unfortunate.
I’m hoping with the manga ending soon and her fighting Toga there will be some satisfying character moments for her, clearly Horikoshi knows how to write good characters when he gives them the time so I don’t think it’s too much a stretch to expect a good conclusion from her arc but who knows, we’ll have to wait and see. Great video!

...I mean, it wouldn't change the sidelining issue at all, but at least her interactions with other characters wouldn't revolve entirely around her crush if their romantic relationship was cemented already. Probably.
    ...Maybe.
    ...I would hope.

And even if they wanted to focus on their careers more and not be distracted by their relationship, they could’ve had a casual relationship where they weren’t all lovey-dovey romantics, but friends/coworkers who didn’t mind holding hands and kissing during off hours/free time.
They know they like each other, their friends know they like each other; everyone acknowledges it and are comfortable about it, so there’s nothing to be shy or blushy about.
Sometimes sexual tension is unnecessary. Cutting out the BS pining/will they won’t they, and just having the main couple dating, openly flirting, and being casually supportive of one another is just as cute and investing.

I think Uraraka's problem is an extension of the bigger problem within MHA of the girls being set up for failure.
MHA is a battle shonen. the focus will be on the action, and that is non-negotiable. so the spotlight roles in the cast will _always_ belong to the people with the coolest looking quirks to fight with. Iida gets shafted by this a bit as well actually... all he does is run fast. all it looks like is Iida... but fast. that's nothing compared to fire, ice, explosions, Mega Super Punching... you name it, it'll look cooler than Uraraka hovering.
and not only do the spotlight roles go to quirks that are visually interesting, but also quirks with a clear linear progression for growth. if you're training your fire/ice quirk, it's pretty intuitive to imagine what growth would look like... to increase your power output while decreasing drawbacks like overheating or freezing. and you can get inventive with how it's used, too... you can build barriers with ice, destroy things with fire, use either one to aid in mobility or change terrain, and you can use either one of them at close, mid, or long range. you literally cannot say half that stuff about basic anti-gravity... what meaningful thing could Uraraka hope to improve about the way her body produces the effects of her quirk??
my point is that broadly, the boy characters snap up all the flashy, interesting, versatile quirks with whole character arcs built right in, which practically write themselves... and as a bonus, they also get implied durability. you know how Bakugo should be exploding his own limbs off with half the shit he does? well... we routinely watch as he doesn't. so you can assume that Bakugo himself has the durability to withstand using his highly destructive quirk, at what is essentially point blank range for him. so if someone else's attack hits him, you can expect him to tank a certain amount of damage. compare that to people with weaker quirks, who intuitively feel like they'd be more fragile on the battlefield because their quirk doesn't _require_ durability from them as a baseline.
and to be fair, yes, they do attempt to show how someone might be damaged by the power of their own quirk with Deku... but it's all played for drama with him, because it is unusual for someone to grow up with a quirk and not be able to withstand what it does. and the _whole point_ of his progression when training to be able to receive One for All, is that he's becoming more and more durable in record time. it's literally acknowledged! the idea that durability against one's own quirk is thrown in as a freebie for a lot of the more destructive abilities that we see people have in MHA, is literally in the text! that's right... we watch as the narrative textually grants Deku his implied durability factor. past a certain point, you would never expect Deku to, say, sprain his ankle, or pull a random muscle in his shoulder, or break a leg from hitting the ground too hard after a jump, and have to actually think about the consequences of sustaining mundane injuries... we're suspending our disbelief for him to some degree. the video even points out that, when Uraraka gets incapacitated at one point, that would not have stopped Deku if he'd been in the same situation. Deku gets main character recovery privileges because he's special and has to be the solution to all the conflicts that are important to his character. but none of the girls get to have this same benefit.
but I mean... is this the cause of their irrelevance, or a symptom? are they irrelevant because they don't have good abilities, or do they not have good abilities because the author never meant their characters to be used for anything important? look at what the girls can do... creating objects, sound manipulation, invisibility, levitation... frog? it's all powers that you either can't see, or that isn't very visually transformative... at least not on a large enough scale to be interesting. Tohru's power is literally being invisible, how much more spot on could it get?! Uraraka's ability has no visual element of its own, and therefore can't produce visually iconic moments for her character... Jiro's whole quirk is literally auditory and not visual... Tsuyu's power is basically just her body and whatever it can naturally do... actually, Sero's quirk is comparable to what Tsuyu can do with her tongue dexterity, but his quirk is actually way more versatile for doing the same thing, and she's not as strong, fast, or durable as the people with quirks that specialize in those areas specifically.
Momo could have the most impressive quirk of the bunch, but she inexplicably has zero weapons training. somehow she got into UA by recommendation, because she supposedly always wanted to become a hero, plus her family has the financial resources to get her all the extra tutoring or training she could ever want... and yet she doesn't even make things that often during battle, nor does she know how to use a variety of stuff that she could be creating on short notice. if she had a repertoire of different weapons that she was trained in using, she'd at least have a solid baseline of ideas for what to equip herself with, and that'd give her enough time to think and get creative. a lot of her greatest combat potential gets left on the cutting room floor. but like... _all_ of their powers are soft, defensively squishy magic type abilities. Tohru is stealth based, Tsuyu is dexterity, Jiro's a glass canon... you get the idea. none of them are the kind of damage sponge that, like, _ALL_ of the boys get to be as a rule, based on what their abilities do.
so if anyone was wondering why people might be disappointed in the girls in MHA, despite there being more of them than most shonen titles will include, and despite them seeming like a huge step up from the likes of Naruto, or similar titles from that era... it's this. MHA still leans into a general idea of gender roles, where men are strong and robust, while the primary job of women is to be cute or pretty, and then they can also be sorta strong as a secondary trait when the plot allows for it. the literal canonical biology of the characters supports this concept. or, if we're looking at it from a meta angle... people will often call out Deku's rare quirklessness, and his subsequently being chosen by All Might himself, as a slightly contrived setup for a zero-to-hero underdog narrative. so... if we're willing to examine the meta of why certain people do or don't have power in the story, because we understand that as an author decision... then what about this trend amongst the girls?
even in the case of the series' many monster girls, like the snake girl, or the dragon lady, or Froppy herself... their entire quirk centers around having an unusual physical appearance. their character design is their quirk. compare this to the boys with unusual appearances... Tokoyami has his bird appearance, but he _also_ has dark shadow. he gets a strange appearance, but _also_ an ability. or look at Shoji... his multiple appendages can manifest different body parts like eyes, ears, or mouths, and he can use his appendages all together in order to glide. once again, his appearance is weird, but he also has, like, a limited shapeshifting ability on top of that.
and then on top of the girls having less fun abilities... Uraraka's isn't even capitalized upon the way it could've been. if she had some form of propulsion built into her suit, she could basically have a limited type of flight, sort of like Shoji. Uraraka already has the lift part covered, and we see her repeatedly struggling when she's floating and hasn't given herself enough momentum to move. she literally could've requested this when she saw Deku request upgrades to his own costume! it even could've been inspired by her seeing Deku think about how to improve in this way! instead, we see her agonize over Mei giving Deku attention. the narrative doesn't even do her any favors.

Bakugo doesn't even have his own villain rival, his story is related to dekus as they both wanted to be like all might but in different ways. Of course he got development and everyone knows that, ochako has had hers too, but simply because she's in LOVE is why people look at her and scoff. Chorus made some good points that she could have been utilized better, but with such a large cast the focus can't always be kept on her. But he also missed a massive point in regarding her bout with toga. On the surface, it looks indeed the way he presented it, two girls in love with the same boy but one is a psychopathic version of the other, as the rivalry grows with twice gone, it becomes more about seeing the perspective of the villains, chorus talked about it but because deku is getting into a similar situation he undermines it. She's a solid character and the only reason she's forgotten despite having done some heavy lifting in the manga, is because the Fandom likes their hot dudes (despite most being teenagers but it seems that most fangirls are teens themselves) Those guys are developed a lot sure, but you can't deny that someone like kirishima, who practically dipped out of the story since the war arc, is still popular among fans.

While Uraraka and Momo get at least character arcs and Mt Lady does it intentionally in the first episode the others get treated really badly a lot of the time.

But damn, what a downhill her character development has became. In my perspective, Uraraka changed her goal being a hero from getting money to help her parents to a hero who wants to save other heroes is just her coping mechanism to mask her true feelings and love for Deku. She doesn't want that feeling to interfere her career as a hero by turning that feeling into a "heroic" way.
