You don't need to loosen the the clamps to the rubber hose at all. just undo the clamps to the air box and slightly lift up the top of the air box. the rubber hose provides plenty of flex to slide the air filter in and out. You only need a couple of inches.

You need to look at the underside of the filter that is where the outside air is coming in at, so it may look good on top but the bottom could be clogged.
