    Excellent video and thank you. My 2006 Equinox did not have enough clearance between the 3/8 tensioner socket and car body for a 3/8 drive ratchet or pull bar. My regular tensioner tool was too long and hit against the firewall before I could get enough slack to get the belt on. Instead of cutting my tool off shorter, I wrapped a small nylon rope around the bottom curve of the tensioner. I connected a ratchet strap in a straight line between the rope and radiator frame. The ratchet strap easily pulled the tensioner and kept it positioned where I could take my time getting the belt properly on the pulleys. Be careful not to get fingers between the belt and pulleys in case the rope breaks or slips. I hope this saves someone time and busted knuckles in the future.

    I've replaced quite a few serpentine belts, but after glancing at my parents' 2008 Equinox I was a bit put off. Definitely not as easy to get to as my experience with vehicles in the past. Never needed to remove a motor mount to do this before! I just knocked the job out in less than an hour thanks to your tutorial, thank you *so* much! After watching your tutorial and knowing exactly what I was getting into, it was a breeze. I actually feel like this one was of the easiest serpentine belts I've ever replaced despite the extra steps, because I knew exactly what I was up against.

    • @BWDuty605
      @BWDuty605 8 лет назад +1

      For the record I replaced the belt because I saw some cracking/dry rotting on the inside. This is definitely one of those parts the do-it-yourself mechanic should be replacing well *before* it breaks. Definitely if you notice a squealing, but the part is so darn cheap I honestly recommend replacing it with any visual signs of wear or just on a regular maintenance schedule. Even if they don't break they can stretch. This is a super easy and cheap fix that prevents major problems down the road -- much like changing your oil. A loose/snapped serpentine belt is going to leave you stranded on the side of the road *best* case scenario, and if you're not quite so lucky you'll destroy your engine from overheating if the water pump isn't turning strong enough, and I can even imagine possible electrical failures is the alternator isn't turning strong enough. Not too sure about the electrical aspect to be honest, but the possible damage to the engine from the water pump not working properly is more than enough to make me check mine!

    I spent an hour trying to do this the right way, then took a 2x2 of wood and put it up from the bottom, using the firewall as the pivot point, and just lifted up the 2x2 up against the pulley. You have to remove the R wheel and the plastic guard, but it’s lickity split after. Could use a pry bar with padding against the pulley wheel, but wood worked fine. I used a deck railing picket, which might have been a smidge smaller than a 2x2. I’d be amazed if seasoned mechanics don’t do something similar, yet it’s definitely not going to be in the FSM, lol.

      Dude you are so right. Got my grandmother's 06 Equinox and took a peek at the belt and I was like "how the hell am I gonna get that belt on? It goes around that mount!" Gone are the days when you can just replace a part without taking out 3 other parts first. Thankfully serpentine belt changes are rare.

      What they try to do is make it so that people will bring it into the dealership to get is serviced. That's what automotive engineers do regardless of make.

    Thanks! Even though the video is over 5 years old, it was extremely helpful for putting back the belt in my Pontiac Torrent after it came off due to a chipmunk that had made his bed somewhere on the belt. I'm sad to say that he did not survive being tossed by the fast spinning belt but shit happens...

    Great video thanks. Girlfriend had her car 2009 at the dealer yesterday and has 65,000 miles on it and they said belt looks fine. They charged her almost $800.00 just for radiator flush, brake fluid change, fuel injector clean and transmission fluid change. And they didn't even change the transmission filter stating they use a chemical to clean it. Dealer services are crooks. My concern was primarily the belt and will do this myself. Again thanks for the great video.

    J 39914 is the tool you can get to do it without removing the motor mount. They could have put a square or hex head instead of a square hole. This is why I hate cars anymore. Million ways to make it unstupid, but instead this is the solution gm auto engineers come up with.

    This was very beneficial to me as I have to do a waterpump on my '05. Never did one on a 3.4 yet. Hope the bolts don't break or the bleeder bolts as that's my main concern as it's the original pump with 184,000 miles on it. Going to do the hoses too as they are the originals also.

    • @BWDuty605
      @BWDuty605 8 лет назад +1

      It definitely can't hurt (as long as you install the new one properly!) but personally I can usually tell if the tensioner is weak when I change the belt. If it seems like it releases tension way too easy when you go to change the belt it's definitely time to replace. If you need to put a bit of elbow grease into it to get the belt routed around the final pulley it's probably still fine. Squealing (especially if a new belt was just put on) is also a pretty good clue it's time to replace the tensioner.

    Great Video... just one edit.
    Ok my bad. 2 edits. Lol
    My previous post works to get the belt off the pully.
    Didn't realize you still need a jack to support the engine when loosening the mount bolts.
    What a Ass-Backwards design. (Good job Chevy)
    No need to jack up engine or have a second person.
    Just use a long enough skinny wood clamp.
    Hook it to back of tension pully & other end to motor mount. ( do this before removing mount)
    Pump your clamp a few squeezes and wallah.
    You can now slip off the belt from top pully.
    Then release the clamp & proceed with mount removal.
    Do it in reverse order to install new belt.
