Just did it yesterday, just as you did, I only had a problem with the top fuel line coming out of the fuel pump, that line was hell, the tool just would not go into the line, I spent an hour fighting with that thing, finally had to grind the tool a little and got it to go into where it was to go, only to have to take a small hammer and tap it forward and it came out. What a pain in the butt that was. I should of gotten another tool. Hate it when all goes easy accept for one little connection. My Crown ford is a 1996. It has a 165,000 miles and I drive it to Sanford Florida from Akron Ohio and back once a year. ( Snow Bird ) Enjoy the ride. They just keep going and going and going. Also helps if your a back yard mechanic......LOL...Thanks for the infoe !!
Anyone that is watching this vid, you don't have too remove the tank to just do the pump. 2 electrical connections. 2 fuel lines and the tank strap bolts.
Thought I would try to do this myself....hahaha yea right. 88 ltd crown vic. I'll call an actual mechanic. Thanks for this video, otherwise I'd probably be in the hospital right now.
Awesome video - As I am watching my local mom & pop repair shop is dropping my tank & replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor. They gave me a ball park price of $600 & after watching I am glad I am having it done instead of trying it myself.
Smart man .. I currently have my car torn apart in my back yard, both tank straps down, the filler neck out, and now I can't get the fuel line off, even with the special tool. It sucks working on the ground, I can't get both my arms up there to remove the fuel line.
It's almost impossible to remove the fuel line with the plastic fuel line remover. make sure to use a metal one like the one used in the video. I'm not saying that that was your issue. just in case someone is reading this and that they can prepare accordingly before tackling this job.
The dealer told me that the fuel tank was obsolete and no after market parts were available. They actually said that. Well RockAuto delivered and four hours later replaced the entire assembly without any issues and curse words. (Thanks to your video) :)
From 7:12 to 8:25, what are those two parts called? I may need new ones but can't seem to find them anywhere. Also, where could someone buy the rubber grommets if they're bad? But also, thanks so much! I'm in the lengthy process of finding which fuel tank my car really needs (interceptor/not) and your video has been extremely helpful! Thank you, TRQ!
I could not get the nuts back on. I took 2 washers and ran a 3/8 tap to thread them. I then threaded them on the studs to hold the studs down. It worked great. Had 3 full threads to get straps on with ease. Wrestled around we trying to get nuts started for a while before doing the washer trick
One of my tank straps rusted off and broke. I ordered new straps but wont get them for 4 days. Can i still drive the car....it's a 2011 Crown Vic Thanks for the video
Wish you guys sold the components on top. All three of them broke trying to get them out of the tank. (1997-sat for 10 years) I got the tank and everything else for it from you guys tho.
I bought a tank from you for my 2011 Crown Vic Police. My old one doesn't have the 2 inch twist in hole for the pressure vent valve. It has 2 1/4 inch hole with rubber grommet. Do you sell the twist in pressure vent valve or at least know the part number? It's too late to return the tank. Thanks!
Quick question on the filler neck When you install it and lube it how Far does it have to go in ? Because I have a leak right on the part that goes in the tank
You want to make sure the tank is empty. But if the fuel pump has failed you can't pump it out. Would be nice if someone had a cool way to drain the tank and not just say "empty the tank first", if you're changing a fuel pump.
emptying the tank has nothing to do with safety unless you are concerned about the weight. Vapors are more explosive than liquid. 1/4 cup of gas with still cause enough vapors to cause and explosion.
Just recieved my tank for my 2010 CV but it doesnt have the cut out on the pressure regulator what can i do in this case to fit the regulator without cut outs
Watch a small hole on the back of the plug (or to watch the new plug of new fuel pump so you can do it) then use any small rod to slide through then prying up the clip or just break it while prying because you don't reuse that clip any way. EASY with out dropping the tanh, or you just drop one side about under 1 inch only
Iv heard just make sure tank has no more then a quarter tank of fuel, but seeing you raise that tank, it lookd like bottom of tank seal was more like at the 1/2 mark?
Draining the tank has nothing to do with safety. Vapors are more explosive than liquid. Reducing the weight of the tank might help, but it is not for safety.
On my crown vic I have the sheet metal trunk pan rotted away from around the fuel strap mounts....are the mounts sturdy enough on their own? Do they rely on the metal from the floor pan? Mounts seem solid although rusty
Evap hose coulda been explained much better. Says you can just press this button or tear up the hose with a pliers. Proceeds to remove the hose instead of the obviously easier press tab? Well its clear that tab is a SOB to remove. An explanation on why you skipped pressing the tab would be great.
Hey at 11:35 that connector tab did not go in all the way like the original one from the factory and I know this because I just switched my fuel pump on my 2003 and I was wondering if it would be a problem. What is that connector for anyway?
I appreciate the video. I needed this. One question. I noticed that the replacement tank doesn't have any heat shield. Is it ok not to have any protective coverage on the outside of the fuel tank? Just asking because my aftermarket tank doesn't either. But the original does
+kontroversee1 Thanks for watching! You can try to swap over the original heat shield to the new part, but it is not necessary to reuse in this application!
Damn it. I thought it was going to be easy to replace it. Someone told me that the fuel pump was right under the rear seat so all you had to do is lift the seat and you can take a fuel pump out right there.
I just bought a fuel tank for my crown vic and im worried about using it with no baffle sump? I would like some input please? Will the aftermarket tanks blow up in a rear end collision?
The tanks that blew up were impacted so hard that either something stored in the trunk punctured the tank or crushed the tank into the rear end housing causing it to rupture .
I would believe the severity of the impact and not the brand of tank is what I'd be worried about . I have an 03 former Chicago PD Crown Victoria . Had it for eight years and just hit 270,000 miles . Some of the Vic's we're hit at 80 mph or faster and some were hit by semi trucks .
Good video...The old straps on my fuel tank rusted through while driving and I had to replace the tank & straps and now I`m having a heck of a time getting the new straps on. They seem like they are 1/4" or so to short. I`ve double checked and they are the correct straps. Any ideas, like maybe a strap stretcher or something :)

11:36 I'm in the process of replacing the pump in my '03. This connector is the only thing holding me back from having to drop the tank completely. I can almost press the tab to get it loose, but there is just no room to do it. I'm hoping someone here can tell me how much I can loosen the strap bolt on the passenger side before it comes out. 🙏 edit: I've tried various pick hacks without success.
I understand the need to drop the tank because of the rust, but in the case that it would be a standard fuel pump replacement, you did everything completely wrong. There is absolutely no need to remove the tank let alone even loosen the straps. All as you’ve got to do is activate the shutoff, turn the engine over, disconnect the negative terminal, remove fuel lines, remove 2 connectors (one on top is difficult but easy with a pick or screwdriver, unbolt and remove the pump, and replace with new following all of those steps in reverse. Any Joe can do this in his driveway with a jack, stands, and some basic tools.

No problem! And it only takes 15 minutes!
For everyone wondering. This job is possible to do on Jack stands in your driveway. Just got it out myself
1) Remove the negative battery cable. 2) turn off the inertia switch for fuel pump. 3) Start engine. Um... better do steps 2 and 3 before 1.
😆

I found the plastic special disconnect tools work better than the metal ones.
Anyone that is watching this vid, you don't have too remove the tank to just do the pump. 2 electrical connections. 2 fuel lines and the tank strap bolts.
OK, where in the link of how to do it that way.
I really appreciate that you didn't swear.
After watching but four minutes of this, it told me I will be heading to an automotive shop.
At the shop now...getting done
Great video...tank rusted out and straps...and valve cover gaskets...thank you...

I love how every part that you remove from the fuel tank is considered "it" or "that" besides the rubber gromets.

just replaced my 99 Vic tank on police interceptor , all model Vics take the same tank 20gal
One is a fuel vent valve, not sure what the other one is. Might be a maker and part number on or in yours.
I thought 1a-auto quit selling parts for Lincoln town cars, went to parts geek , to get what I need.

Noticed this car didn’t have a tank pressure sensor either where it Ts off as well.
So do I have to drop the whole tank to replace the pressure sensor on top of the tank?
excellent video very helpful. Ty

Quick question on the filler neck
When you install it and lube it how

Because I have a leak right on the part that goes in the tank
Best way possible only thing I did different was fish. The fuel pump connector through the opening in the trunk

My 04 Grand Marquis had a valve on top of the gas tank that was completely opened no hose or anything, is this normal?
Anyone know how to tell if you have a twist in pressure valve or a push in style? Do you need to drop the tank to tell?

Looks good , what kind of rubber lube do we use is it silicone none purtrolum base .
Iv heard just make sure tank has no more then a quarter tank of fuel, but seeing you raise that tank, it lookd like bottom of tank seal was more like at the 1/2 mark?
I have a 99 Grand Marquis and I have bolts on the gas tank straps , not a nut.
This video is great, really helpful .whom knows the name of that type of drill, I need one?
Draining the tank has nothing to do with safety. Vapors are more explosive than liquid. Reducing the weight of the tank might help, but it is not for safety.
Is this the same process for a 2004 Lincoln Town car?
Can someone tell me the name of tool he used to get the gunk out of the top fuel line
Bruh, gotta hit that fuel filter, too.
On my crown vic I have the sheet metal trunk pan rotted away from around the fuel strap mounts....are the mounts sturdy enough on their own? Do they rely on the metal from the floor pan? Mounts seem solid although rusty

Ok. Thank you for your response
Just noticed one of my straps is snapped, watching this looks like I wont have to drop the tank which is a massive relief.
Thank you
What grease do you use to lubricate the grommets?
TIA - at 4:47, what is that cover (about 14"x18") under the trunk protecting? (Mine is '99 CV)

What is that part that he connects at 11:40?
Is it the fuel tank pressure sensor?
So first you disconnect the battery and later crank it over to eliminate fuel pressure?
😆
How does this pump have no return line?
2002 and up are returnless systems pretty sure, their pumps work off from a fpdm - fuel pump driver module, it controls the pressure.
What are the two green parts called at 9:12?
+Nate Ledbetter That would be the evap canister!

What is that wire called???
Use a quality fuel pump. Avoid the cheap ones or you will do this job all over again.
so Motorcraft basically, expensive

Most are recommending buying the replacement bolts from the dealer or dorman which are longer.
So first remove negative cable, then turn off the gas switch, then crank to release pressure,.hhmmmmm

Why didn’t they just weld the seam?
Welding the tank? Flames near gas vapors are not usually a good idea.
Hahaha
