The pinion seal is responsible for containing the differential fluid at the point where the pinion interfaces with the driveshaft. A leaking seal will result in a low fluid level, which could eventually damage differential internals. This video shows you how to install a new pinion seal on your 1998-2012 Ford Crown Victoria.

I went to a shop and had my Differential fluid changed on my 2004 Gran Marquis.. The Mechanic told me that the Pinon seal was leaking so I ok'd the repair. About 10 days later, the rear end sounded like it exploded and I pulled over. I noticed a flame on top of the axle and ran like hell. I called the Fire dept and they told me that was massive amounts of fluid/oil underneath my car. I got home from a tow 4 hours later. Then I had the car towed back to the shop. I spoke to the owner and He gave me keys for a rental and said" We have done tons of these repairs and this never happened". He was very apologetic and told me that "More than likely the whole Diff and axles have to be replaced , not to worry..it will be taken care of".
It's a 5 Star repair shop and I understand things happen...we are not perfect. You are an excellent mechanic and Teacher. Thank you for the Video.

So I'm assuming they made it right? Usually that doesn't happen. They shrug it off and you have to see a lawyer.

they have their own insurance to cover these unexpected expenses. However, some of the shops blame the driver first, and then postpone contacting their insurance company until the customer give up. So your shop is definitely a 5 star repair shop.

I would have pulled the end cover and raked out the old goo before adding new fluid but I am really picky. Great video

    Hello,
Thank you for the presentation, very informative. I am asking a few questions for a friend of mine who is in the process of changing a few things on his son car, not in a garage. He's not new to automatics, but do have a few questions he would like to ask you.
    1. You said mark the flange and the drive shaft, so when if it doesn't need to be replace it would be balanced. Correct?
    2. But If it does need to be, how does one determine that it's balanced since it a new flange?
    3. Purchased a few items from the auto store, first was a seal but when received it said oil seal, it was supposed to be and universal pinion seal, is it ok to use that one? Also purchased a kit that had the flange, seal and nut, in the event that all items needed to be changed, but if not, I can return it.
    4. Is there a specific torque wrench I need?
    5. And once all items have been replaced do I use the same torque wrench to tighten them?
    6. Do I use the same rotating torque method that I use at the beginning of the process at the end when putting everything back?
    7. You said your number was 28 everybody is different, but you also said add 5 more to that, so that would make 33 torque correct?
    8. You said when replacing the fluid it depends on the climate in your area, well we have warm and cold what do you suggest?
    9. When replacing the rear gasket on the differential, do I need to use any extra sealant or do I just put the gasket on by itself with no sealant?
    Thank you in advance!

Good video for me if i decide to do it myself. But at 10:52 that sound of the gear oil bottle just had me dying. Can't do the work without a good laugh.

Ahh! Rotating torque. So that's why the wheels and brakes come off. Now the stuff in the Haynes manual makes sense.

Sooo wouldn’t Ford have a torque spec for the pion seal nut... cause almost positive we do

    • @1995flyingspur
      @1995flyingspur 3 года назад +3

Torque specs for that nut are only for pinions using shims but because this unit uses a crush collar, it's all about rotating torque.

Leaving the brakes intact can create extra drag and give an incorrect or erratic rotating torque value.
