To anyone who is watching this now, you can also try changing Buffer graphics commands from 2 to none or 0 and for me it improved kingdom hearts birth by sleep and peacewalker to be playable with minimal stuttering in areas with multiple moving objects and stutter free in others. Also you can try to set the system clock to 212 and see if that works, that one is my go to. Yugioh arc V and gx tag force 3 run flawlessly in the 3d cutscenes.
The crew that made the ppsspp stand alone emulator are wizards, even my 4k amazon stick can run some of the least demanding games quite smooth, like guilty gear or blazblue.
I'm waiting for the same. Running PSP, Dreamcast, maybe even GameCube, would be a huge plus and it might send the sales sky high. What I'd like besides these features, would be a bigger screen.

Might be hard for handhelds tho... There's not that many people who's into retro gaming. I recently dug into this topic. I had no idea these devices existed until 2020.

Hey Russ, great video. It’s worth noting that some games actually fare better without Buffered Rendering or frameskip enabled. Games like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Lord of Apocalypse, Ultimate Ghosts ‘N Goblins, and even Final Fantasy Type-0 can achieve a more consistent FPS without Buffered Rendering. Also, make sure that you go into developer tools and disable everything. Lastly, remove control bindings for unnecessary commands, particularly the Speed Toggling and Alternate Speed commands. It’s important that these have nothing bound to them, as they’ve been reported to cause slowdown just by having a mapping.
I bought the rg350m, simply because I liked the thought of having a handheld with more build quality that mere plastic can't provide. I liked the idea of being able to play retro classics on it, such as ps1 which really switched on my love for games. My favorite handheld was the psp for the longest time, and a cfw psp is a great emulation handheld on its own. But an aluminum body handheld that can do everything the rg350 or 351 can do, plus flawless psp emulation, would be a definite win in my book. So I'm holding out until they release that exact handheld, nvm the price tag.
Heads up! For final fantasy tactics on psp, the "Standard Go" core works better in Arkos than the default. Also it runs the patched version of fftactics that eliminates slowdown during spells. Ppsspp would dip to 15 fps every spell cast where standard go is smooth 45-60 always.

Had my system for nearly a year now. Only just set it up. For some reason I thought it could run PSP games flawlessly. Someone Miss advised me I think. Thanks for the tutorial. I’ve changed my settings and some games are now at least playable. :)
I expect that the next generation or two of these Anbernic devices will start doing PSP and Dreamcast much better and that's when I'll grab one 🍿 My Android actually plays those platforms pretty much perfectly, but the problem is I really can't stand using a clip-on controller so rarely play on it
That makes sense - as much as I love my phone, I don't want to play games on it (or make storage space to store the games). I prefer to have a dedicated game device. I do think we're going to see better devices this year, if not from Anbernic, then definitely from the other manufacturers.
I'm on the RG351V with the lastest version of 351ELEC. How do you access and navigate the menu in PPSSPP. I can't seem to bring up the menu to change the settings.
in resolution dont use auto. use 1x it will significally boost performance in expence of low quality. and theres a setting that can reduce the sprites and effects that can boost framerate too i forgot what it is but it in the lower portion of the settings and also i note dont use frame skip it will just skip only the frame but it doesn't boost any frames.
where do you get your roms for psp? i have rg351mp and it wont run the 7z format, tried converting to iso format and still not working. not sure if its the wrong iso format or what. any help appreciated, also whats the best site to get roms in your opinion?
I've been tinkering with ppsspp settings in order to play Tag Force games,so far are the only ones i've tested I disabled Frameskip Kepto cpu clock at default But the thing that did the most for me was disabling the "Force Real Clock Sync" Game when from stuttering every once in a while (during the opening cutscene by example) To smooth,constant 100% speed at PsPx2 resolution Overworld,duels,3d cutscenes At this point the games look better in my 351P than in my Vita
"Standalone Go" on arkos has beat everything else so far by a mile. PSP was pretty much unplayable before I used this. Set frameskip to 2 and I could even play GTA decently. With Madden 2012 and Tiger Woods, could even drop frameskip to 1 and 2x resolution with good results. The other standalone emulator don't play games well at all. Hope this helps. COMPLETE GAMECHANGER FOR ME!

Is there any way to rebind the hotkeys in the standalone PPSSPP emulators? I want it to be slightly more similar to retroarch's default hotkeys on EmuElec, but the menu within PPSSPP doesn't really seem to accept button combinations as input.
Hello. Really nice settings. But i have a problem. When i play GTA or Prince of Persia, whenever i use left joystick, it moves the opposite way: i push forward, it moves backwards, and when i push back, it moves forward. Any way to fix this? Thank you

That's of a lot of help! but have you managed to make the second stick working? I don't know how to configure ppsspp to allow remaping the pad controls to the right analog stick of my rgbmax on retrooz. That would improve a lot multiple psp games
I use a psp for emulation, and also emulate psp ISO’s. They run flawless. Gotta run snes and advance as stand alone emulators, and everything else in retroarch.

Hi Russ, I managed to get a RG351P but after few days of trials and errors with your video, finally I get it to run on ArkOS but with a few issue I still couldn't resolve as below: 1) My unit doesn't show PS1, Neo Geo, WonderColour Swan games. For PS1, I created .cue files for every .bin files but still not appear on the ArkOS. I loved PS1 games the most so I really sad about this. 2) My unit does appear PSP folder and games, but in the PPSSPP emulator it saids "Could not load game. Not a valid disc image." I am a beginner to these retro emulation consoles, and I have been studied a lot and still could'nt resolve it. Really, really Thanks if you could help me. Greetings from Malaysia. :)

Just hacking PS VITA and Adrenaline do the rest for you if you want to play PSP/PS1. And Retroarch newest version with GBA Core run perfectly on Vita. But i still love PPSSPP Standalone, because you can run almost all PSP game with better graphic and apply better texture from fan, for example Persona 3 Portable, YS Seven,...

Yeah I agree, PSP is the way to go to play PSP games :) But I think there are people out there who want a device that can play everything all at once, so hopefully this is helpful in that regard.
Although PSP has some nuances, PSP Minis play very well. Hero of Sparta plays almost at 60fps. I do wish there was a dedicated folder instead of putting the roms in the PSP folder.
Your reviews are perfect and full of necessary information - but I have a bit of a problem with the English language - so I probably didn't notice the maximum capacity of the card that can be used. - I want to use a card: SAMSUNG micro SDXC 256GB EVO Plus + SD adapter (MB-MC256HA / EU) - Will it be compatible?
It's okay. It has a few hiccups but most of that is textures rendering, so the more you play it the smoother the experience should be. I only played through the first encounter though, so maybe it gets worse later in the game.

Hi Bo, PS1 should be on there. All you have to do is add a game to the "psx" file in the GAMES folder of your SD card. Once there's a game in there (that's in a recognized file type, like bin/cue or pbp), the system will pick up on it and display the PS1 category in your main menu. Hope that helps!

The file type you're using isn't recognized by the firmware (like if it's .zip or .7z format), or you have the system hidden in the UI Settings. To unhide it, just press START and then go to UI Settings, and look at the "Systems Displayed" list and make sure that PS1 is checked. Here is a list of accepted file types for the stock firmware: .cue .cbn .chd .img .iso .m3u .mdf .pbp .toc .z .znx
The base case scenario for playing PSP games on these retro handhelds is fan translations Japanese Visual Novels. Very low demanding since its just reading through a story.
This tutorial seems great but the thing is... I don't think this would work for a RG351V., I have no gamedata or PPSSPP dossier on my micro sd cards. Looks like the emulators are a part of the firmware or something because there's no emulators dossiers either.
Why no one seems to talk about Monster Hunter portable 3rd Hd ver. english patched (yep that's the whole thing). I'm fiddling with the configs for some weeks now, and it seems to run just fine, hey the text is barely readable and I don't know why
You may need to install the system fonts to make it look better. Check out the written guide at the bottom of my video for a link, it walks you through how to add the new fonts. I haven't tried that game but I've heard it works pretty well on this device!

Running ArkOS and have been trying for MONTHS to figure out how to launch PSP games. I see them on the menu, but when I select them, the screen flashes black twice and kicks me back to the menu.

It really is! I wish I could force a higher rendering resolution, but it's still very nice.
You always set the cpu clockspeed to 66, lowering the emulated clockspeed makes it easier to run games.

So you don't use launch box you just chuck the ios files in the PSP folder then screen grab for the menu?
If you adjust the force max in settings on Arkos it has a massive impact when playing PSP.
Definitely! It really depends on the game, but it's a handy tool nonetheless.

How do you go to the PPSSPP setting menu when you choose "LIBRETRO/PPSSPP" as the emulator? R3 doesn't work.
You'll enter the RetroArch quick menu just like you would with any other RetroArch core (L3+R3 for stock, or SELECT+X for ArkOS/351ELEC).

How do i get in the menu to set the frameskipping in an RG351V (elec351)? I have no idea how you popped that up.

@@haririod1139 Thanks Haririo D. The RG351V has only 1 Joystick. Ive set it to be R3 which helped. But at the moment I have a new problem. That this menu looks like a TieDie Rainbow and can't read the tekst anymore. Looks dope though.

Bro I wanted to switch my controls in cod road to victory so I swithed the x y a b to the right joystick and it changed all my settings for all psp games now o can’t even open up the psp settings please help 😭😭

Glad you brought in a hacked vita!! A hacked psp is also a good way to play psp games 😊 you can get those for pretty cheap.
Hi Russ, I managed to get a RG351P but after few days of trials and errors with your video, finally I get it to run on ArkOS but with a few issue I still couldn't resolve as below:
1) My unit doesn't show PS1, Neo Geo, WonderColour Swan games. For PS1, I created .cue files for every .bin files but still not appear on the ArkOS. I loved PS1 games the most so I really sad about this.
2) My unit does appear PSP folder and games, but in the PPSSPP emulator it saids "Could not load game. Not a valid disc image."
I am a beginner to these retro emulation consoles, and I have been studied a lot and still could'nt resolve it. Really, really Thanks if you could help me.

In my country rg351p and psvita are about the same price. But the form factor of rg351p is still something to consider

I atually was looking for some hombrew for my vita...but your video is very interesting. Should I go with this(the retro handheld) instead of hacking the vita?
Just hacking PS VITA and Adrenaline do the rest for you if you want to play PSP/PS1. And Retroarch newest version with GBA Core run perfectly on Vita.
But i still love PPSSPP Standalone, because you can run almost all PSP game with better graphic and apply better texture from fan, for example Persona 3 Portable, YS Seven,...

i'm enjoying the arkos for my rg351 the best :) games runs the best on it and and the updating over wifi of the os is really handy
Definitely handy! 351ELEC also introduced online updates (including nightlies and release clients), so now we have the best of both worlds.
how do you use PPSSPP on ArkOS? i cant figure out where to put my roms or how to run it at all

Yeah I agree, PSP is the way to go to play PSP games :) But I think there are people out there who want a device that can play everything all at once, so hopefully this is helpful in that regard.
Although PSP has some nuances, PSP Minis play very well. Hero of Sparta plays almost at 60fps. I do wish there was a dedicated folder instead of putting the roms in the PSP folder.

How does Crisis Core run on RG351P with those settings mentioned in your video?
It's okay. It has a few hiccups but most of that is textures rendering, so the more you play it the smoother the experience should be. I only played through the first encounter though, so maybe it gets worse later in the game.

Hi Bo, PS1 should be on there. All you have to do is add a game to the "psx" file in the GAMES folder of your SD card. Once there's a game in there (that's in a recognized file type, like bin/cue or pbp), the system will pick up on it and display the PS1 category in your main menu. Hope that helps!

@@bolugo6490 okay, then I would say it has to be one of two things. The file type you're using isn't recognized by the firmware (like if it's .zip or .7z format), or you have the system hidden in the UI Settings. To unhide it, just press START and then go to UI Settings, and look at the "Systems Displayed" list and make sure that PS1 is checked. Here is a list of accepted file types for the stock firmware: .cue .cbn .chd .img .iso .m3u .mdf .pbp .toc .z .znx

The RG351p, only serves to run 2D games, light games, 2D games, not for heavy 3D games. It is very good for games up to the PS1.

This tutorial seems great but the thing is... I don't think this would work for a RG351V., I have no gamedata or PPSSPP dossier on my micro sd cards. Looks like the emulators are a part of the firmware or something because there's no emulators dossiers either.
Why no one seems to talk about Monster Hunter portable 3rd Hd ver. english patched (yep that's the whole thing). I'm fiddling with the configs for some weeks now, and it seems to run just fine, hey the text is barely readable and I don't know why
You may need to install the system fonts to make it look better. Check out the written guide at the bottom of my video for a link, it walks you through how to add the new fonts. I haven't tried that game but I've heard it works pretty well on this device!

It's about the same now. I think there has been an update to PPSSPP, but performance hasn't improved.

Running ArkOS and have been trying for MONTHS to figure out how to launch PSP games. I see them on the menu, but when I select them, the screen flashes black twice and kicks me back to the menu.
