Extremely helpful video buddy. Decided to dig out my original Euro release day model PSP a few weeks back. Needed new silicone pads as the buttons and d-pad were very unresponsive, an Sd card adapter (already had a spare high speed 64gb SD from drone flying), new anologue assembly (drift), new battery and soon going to be doing a shell swap for the crystal shell (I already watched your video and will be using it as a guide) and installing an IPS 1000 screen at the very end once everything else is in place as the shell swap looks potentially tricky but I am confident (Original screen is a little scuffed and not bright enough). I bought two Memory stick when I had my PSP - 4GB and 32GB. The 32 GB had my entire music library on it so I could listen to music at work. I also had several movies on it so I could watch them at work while I worked my data entry job.
If you have a curated selection of games, 64GB is more than enough. Even 32GB should be plenty for holding all your faves. Huh, I've been using 128GB(64+64) on my PSP since 2017 with a dual SD adapter. Looks like I was unknowingly using the maximum usable storage size. Been looking to further mod my PSP after digging it up from my drawers. I'm glad I found this video and channel.
@@ultraspinalki11 There's the 1000, 2000 and Vita TV. The 1000 is the original model (a.k.a, "Vita phat") that features an OLED screen. It has a variant, the 1100 model, with a slot for a SIM card to access the 3G network. The 2000 model (a.k.a. "Vita Slim") is a slimmer, lighter redesign with larger buttons and an LCD screen. The Vita TV is a Vita without a controller, battery, backpanel and screen that plugs into a TV. It's not compatible with all Vita games because of no touchscreen or backpanel. Personally, I'm a fan of the original model for the OLED screen. Even though it is an early OLED screen and it has some issues (doesn't completely turn off on all-black screens and I can see some black spots during screen transitions), the colours look great and it doesn't consume as much battery as an LCD screen.
Thank you very much for the detailed testing and clearly presented results. This channel is becoming a definitive source for PSP info and will make me personally order an Ali Express PSP. Thank you again.
I haven't touched a PSP in more than 10 years, but I remember changing the compression level / strength when using .cso images (I have no memory about the other formats) would have a HUGE impact on both the resulting size and the loading speed / stuttering. I know testing each level for each format to find the sweet spot would've taken an absurdly long time but it's still worth mentioning, considering how in-depth the video goes.
Perfect Video for me. Make my PsP my Go To Hype Console for 2024 a time travel machine from the 2000's. A few Movies Anime..A Few Games from the Time and Albums.. this will be a blast
Use-maxxing your PC's storage haha. Nice. Man things have come a LONG way since making a Pandora Battery with a Steak Knife and pencil lead to make a Magic Memory Card haha.
Man back then when i heard about that, it was so far fetched, you were taking a CHANCE that you didn’t fall into a fallacy. Got a friends broken psp and modded the battery to a successful pandora. Who found this hack in the battery 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the validation! I tried every tutorial I could find, I also found that I could format the 256 card into fat32 and the PSP see all 256. But if you load up the card you'll see corrupted files. I could fit my whole game library or my movie library but not both. I found that loading files 10gb at a time, you'll start getting corrupted files around the 130gb and above. My solution is my main 128 card with games, and 128 card for movies. There is a 3D print file out there to make a SD and Duo card storage holder that fits in the UMD drive, and just swap them.
@@TotalKommandoHaha thanks, going to sleep right now. For the future videos about ark 4 I hope you will talk about how to uninstall it in case of trouble or whatsoever 👍🏻
@@Siphr1Oh un compatriote ! Je suis clairement un amoureux de la PSP c'est aussi pour cette raison que cette vidéo a immédiatement attiré mon attention 😁
Just picked up a battery and new charger! Just wanted to make sure this bad boy worked before getting a memory card for this sucker. Got myself a 64GB and it’s arriving tomorrow
Thanks for the hard work and get some good rest. Looking forward to the Ark4 vids as I was only aware about Pro-CFW. Bought a mate IPS screen thanks to your channel. 👍
I've actually got a teamgroup Micro SD 256gb and works perfectly fine, have filled down to 3gb left and did not have any problems from this. I did notice that the adapter I purchased from Ali express was back in 2014 and was able to push to the limit compared to the new pro duo adapter that was purchased this year was maxed out to 128gb only.
Awesome video with tons of helpful information. Really appreciate the effort you put into these guides and for the benefit of the community. I remember in the early 2010s watching videos on YT for psp and people were either not helpful at all or would show something really cool but wouldn't guide people on how to achieve a said cool feature so I really appreciate what you do here. Regarding the 256G cards and adapters, I'll share my experience where I put a single micro sd of 256 GB sandisk into the dual slot cr5400 adapter and filled i think around 150 gigs with ps1 and psp titles, it worked fine for me, I gave 1 psp to my friend with that set up and kept 1 for myself. My friend's got the whole iso data corrupted after 2 years, I think the save files are fine but I haven't checked it myself, but the iso games won't work at all anymore. I don't have mine near me so I can't test it but the last I played it ( a year ago) it worked fine with that set up which i had kept for about a year. The adapters are very brittle though so ive taped them up to hold them together and they did work for a long time. when using 1 card in the dual adapter, when it fails i can just retrieve the data from the micro sd and use a new adapter to keep it working but yeah the load times for 256 is very long and I haven't tested beyond 256G. I was not aware of many things you mentioned in the video such as pushing on the micro sd broke the adapter, i did that many times without realising. also wasn't aware of jso and i didn't connect the dots that i might be getting corrupted files due to the larger micro sd. I could not get the 256 g card to work on those black adapters at all, I tried a bunch of em. it only worked on the dual slot ones labelled cr5400 ones. Edit: Forgot to mention, the one i gave my friend had 2 cards in the dual slot and that failed after 2 years, my setup had 1 card in the slot and worked for about 1.5 years according to my testing, but i dont have it near me so I can't test it at the moment to see if it still works.
Awesome thank you for sharing this, read through the whole thing, so one other comment mentions the CR5400 labeled ones, I will be on the look out and possibly make a follow up video if I end up getting it to work : )
Great video, very useful. Just want to add my experience using above 128GB. I have been using a 512GB SD and my ISO folder for the last 3 months and at the moment is around the 200gb mark; nothing broken up. No corrupted or missing files. One thing is that is necessary to use categories add-on. Although is true that is pretty slow compared to my 128GB, like takes 30 seconds to do the initial load.
I love your content, you litterally saved me infitite time trying to figure out why my psp wouldnt read my new SD, your format tools saved the day. When you think you will be able to release the video for ark4 setup?
Glad to help : ) Im hoping to take a break from work to focus on youtube sometime within the next week or so. There is a slew of things I gotta cover, and I want to make it into an AIO video that covers nearly everything regarding ARK/CFW
Dann I’ve tries everything to go over 128GB. Today I’ll receive the Duo slot memory SD, I won’t expect anything of it after this video…. Thanks though, great video.
It made sense back when they were originally made, uSD cards capped out at 16gb and didn't get particularly hot. Even when the uSD card size limit hit 64gb and cards started running hot the allure of 128gb remained strong. Other than Peace Walker, PSP games are cautious about writing to the card too often, because flash storage at the PSP's launch was infamously unreliable and they couldn't guarantee you'd ever upgraded, so there wasn't much risk of data loss during normal use.
Thank you so much for such high-quality content about PSP that you create. You are truly unique on RUclips. I have found an incredible amount of useful information from your videos. Good luck with what you're doing!
Man if only I saw this video before I made my 256gb psp 3k around 2 years ago. I filled it up enough to where it started having corrupted memory problems in the storage and I just couldnt figure out what was happening, as there was literally no correct documentation online related to high amounts of storage on the psp with people getting 256 or 512gb sd cards in their psps and saying "it just works" and nothing more.
Amazing video as always. I wonder if on Adrenaline the max is 128gb or 500gb. That being said, I hope you can cover some PS Vita in the future. I love the Vita since its lke a PSP with better screen and dual sticks.
I got a 64Gb card in my PSP and it's just enough to have every game i want on it, I also have an original mem stick duo with 8Gb where I keep my ps1 games in
I just bought a PSP 3000 and am not really going to mod it whatsoever - I just don't care to. I plan on buying UMDs and the only type of personalization I'd like to do is download some themes, without modding though. What should I be doing if this is the way I intend on playing my PSP? I don't even know what formatting is or why I would need to do that in the first place. Someone on reddit just commented the link to this video, but I'm still like..unsure of what I'm supposed to be doing. I just wanna put my little discs in my PSP and play T^T
Its a quick and easy way to bring it to a clean state no matter how it was formatted before, you should be able to use diskpart as well but its not as user friendly
I unfortunately rendered and uploaded the video in 1080p instead of 4K lol Happen when you upload at 4:20 in the morning. I may do a follow up video if I gather enough new info later on
i can confirm that the 128gb is the absolute limit on the PSP since on PS vita adrenaline files will display as corrupt pass that capacity, tho you can bypass it using adrenaline bubble manager
Thank you for the guide! I will definitely take this account when setting up my dream PSP. So does this mean the actual card adapters themselves don't have any difference in performance?
You know I felt like psp was coming to a point where you couldn’t make an internet channel career on it and get large recognition (for its age) but in a few months your growing quicker than psvita at 3AM who posts like almost everyday. FOR YEARS 😂
Good video. Learned a lot on what cards to get. I think it would be great to see a video on recommended plugins and such for a newly modded PSP. Jesus loves you!
I have a 64 go on my psp 2000 and was wondering how much gb could handle to put more games on it, but now thank to me DankStations I know I can double my storage with more games and even movies (not movies but futurama)
Now would be the time to warn people about fake SD cards. You need to make sure the SD Cards are genuine and from well known brands. The fake ones use a storage chip that only stores a fraction of their stated capacity. When you try to store more past that actual capacity, data starts getting corrupted as the storage controller overwrites data in order to fit the new data, and you may even see strangely named files and folders popping up with strange file sizes. H2testw is a good program for testing the SD card is actually the listed capacity. Insert the SD card into the included adaptor and insert it into your PC and test the full capacity using the program. There's an English option in it. 3:30 Have you verified the SD cards were genuine using a program like H2testw before testing it in the Memory Stick adaptor?
damn it, i knew something was missing, ill add it to pinned comment and the spreadsheet. And possibly have a dedicated video for it. My cards are legit been using them for years, from reliable sources, and function correctly with the right speeds
Verify the SD Cards using the SD card port, not the Memory Stick adaptor, before claiming there's a problem with the adaptor. If H2testw detects no problems with the storage while inserted into the SD Card slot, it's the adaptor. If it goes red and claims errors, it's an issue with the SD card.
The majority of them i filled out with data without the adapter during the testing, but ill the test on all of them. I have used it in the past. Feels bad that I missed it
Remember, fake storage devices have existed since at least the PSP days. Fake Memory Sticks existed in 2008 and I remember reading about eBay guides on how to detect if your Memory Stick was fake.
@@MatthewCenance Thanks for reminding me, I have added a guide and will update it as my I get my results. Im very well aware of fake storage devices, even remember telling myself to add a segment for it, yet here I am because of time constraints and lack of energy after work I forgot to add it : |
ive been recomending 64/128 to people for years now, the higher capacities people claimed never seemed reliable or reasonable to get plus the structural issues with the dual adaptors for awhile 128 also wasnt fully reliable, earlier on some cards just didnt work right, but if you got a card that worked it worked fine, but i couldnt recommend someone in a budget squeeze to get what was at the time a 100 dollar card when there was a chance of it not working so i still kept 64 as a strong recommendation for a long time
Perfect timing. I'm literally right now I'm in the process of increasing memory space for my PSP (my old SD card has only 8gb). This video answers all my questions. Thanks! Actually, I do have 1 question. The SD adapter has a tiny slide switch on the side. I don't know what or why that is. It doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone knows what it does? At first I thought that it was to lock the mirco SD card (in the adapter), but that doesn't seem to be it.
The tiny switch on the micro sd -> full size sd card adapter is a lock switch to stop you from accidently deleting or writing data ( useful for photographers )
I think the original psp needs updated memory stick card (using pcb card like sd2vita to have full supoort of 512gb of micro sd (if the firmware of the psp system support this on psvita, using this pcb adapter....the original psp can support 512gb if have this type of pcb adapter))
I did the dual sd card and yes they are fragile. I kept mine in my psp and never took it out but one time. When I did it broke apart in my hands. I did get a new one and I didn’t have to reformat anything because both sd cards still worked.
A very useful guide thank you a lot even thought it did make my mind blow up lol 9:00 I guess this why is one of reason my card (64gb sandisk red one) not working right after I copy game intro it and it keep said "data corrupted"
It would be interesting if you added .pbp(eboot) to the file compression testing, as it is the smallest filesize achievable for the psp and uses the native sony driver. You can convert any iso game to it.
I plan to have an indepth dedicated video exploring file compression in the future, will def add that to the list. It was kinda something I added as a side dish lol
@@TotalKommando That's nice to hear, from my personal experience, the same games that struggle with the regular iso compression, will also struggle with .pbp, and whatever runs fine as regular iso compressions will also run fine as .pbp, at an even smaller filesize, but I didn't do any intricate testing/comparisons. And a funny thing about .pbp compressed games is that they will run on completely ofw if they are fake-signed.
as someone who grew up spending all possible free awake time with PSP modding and custom firmware, homebrew things from the bottom of my heart thank you for your videos. It revives so many strong emotions in a way that is hard to express. PSP is a marvel and the custom FW scene topped all of that off.
Yeah I don't know why I got the dual SD card years ago it fell apart and I taped it back together I guess I just had two 32gb micro SD cards and figured whatever wish I got the quality one will probably just get a Android handheld to replace my PSP when my card stop working
I will buy a psp for the first time in my lifetime as i was amazed by first time seeing it and even more amazed by your mods but as a beginner should i try to do these my self ?? Please answer my question
Take your time, start simple, and slowly move up, only do what you are comfortable with. Wait for my ARK-4 Custom Firmware video, that will be the most important one
I can confirm from personal experience that the dual adapters are crap, even when using 2 64GB cards - and I tried 5 of them. That’s probably why they are no longer made, aside from maybe EOL related to parts originally used to make them.
When Sony announced the PSP way back when they called it the Walkman of the 21st century as someone who wants to escape Spotify I want to get a PSP for music player that's partially why I am wondering how much space I can get for a memory card thank you
If its 128GB or below, its either a fake card, failed card, or the card isnt sitting properly in the adapter, anything above will infact not format inside the psp directly
I didnt know that they even made 1.5TB cards. That mustve been released specifically for the steam deck or massive data hoarders who want all the space on their camera
@@TotalKommando Sorry, I meant the compression level for the compression type. At 19:50, when you show the compressor window, there's a box for compression level, currently set at 9 (best compression). I wondered what setting it to 8,7, 6, or possibly even 5 might do for the file size/performance.
@@DurgisFlak Ahh Yea, I plan to do a deeper dive on this later in a future video. As of right now, I have not done any tests on different compressions.
Question. Where do you get a good psp 3000 replacement screen. I bought one from aliexpress and is pretty good but the viewing angles are not very good in comparison to the original one, to the point that if you look at it from a extreme angle, the colors become inverted. Also, there is like a weird brightness problem whe looking at black screens, similar to a very cheap TN panel. Thanks
I have ordered a lot of 2000/3000 screens from various sources, and almost all of them have had defects despite being brighter and looking cleaner initially : ( You either got a defective one or a super cheap version of it This is one of them, got a good screen but it turned defective quickly, best option imo is to find a used old 3000 screen from a dead psp s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DFgX2g3
@@brandoncarral-jimenez1324 Nope you need 2000 screens, and aftermarket 2000 screens are actually much much worse than 3000 aftermarket screens. They are all bad and would only recommend them as a last resort as they come defective or slightly washed out or both
@@brandoncarral-jimenez1324 I got a couple videos on this, one of them is the eBay buying guide: ruclips.net/video/JzyDVyKqGuU/видео.html You could even buy the ones without them running in the photos, it will be cheaper and even if its got a yellowing screen, its still better than a defective new screen, plus you get extra spare parts
The Aliexpres SD link no longer works, I have found another seller but it is SanDisk Ultra and it has different numbers on it, what difference is there with the Extreme Pro?
I have updated it Its mostly just faster when transferring files to it using a USB 3.0 Card reader, otherwise on the PSP there is a super small difference not worth the extra cost for most people
hey do you know a good guide to make a battery mod on a psp 3000? I have the pcb from a OEM 1200mah battery and I was planing on removing the UMD drive in order to increase the batery life. Thank you!
Im fixing up PSPs and putting templated SD cards in them, with all the same games etc. Is there an easy way to make a drive image and then quickly copy that onto the SD?
You could use cloning / backup / imaging tools such as: - Mini Tool ( they got a few different tools ) free - Lazesoft ( works but usually slower than the others ) also free - I think you could use one of these to create an image and then use rufus to quickly write it
these dual card adapters are also insanely fragile, i had one crack open after a couple dozen insert cycles, and i no longer trusted the connection to be good so i downgraded to a single slot adapter and a single 32gb card
i gotta ask, when buying your psp shells where to do you buy them from? I've been having bad luck finding good ones out there also great video really helped me budget out with what i was already working with to really stretch out my memory card
i think 128 gb is more then enough for games /emulators and so on.. i only use a 64 gb card and never reached the limit. i also see no sense i putting on thousands of games, which at the end you don t play at all. only my 5 cents..
Hey @totalkommando, I upgraded my PSP 1000 screen and faceplate, only issue I'm having is that the analogue stick is being finicky. It moves around on its own unless I apply pressure to the faceplate to hold it down (I haven't screwed it back together yet) but even when its working, my character in GTA doesn't jog forward, he only walks forward slowly leading me to believe the analogue stick is registering the upward movement as me moving the analogue stick only slightly up and not fully. I've cleaned that little rubber piece that connect to the analogue stick as well as all the connectors, and it's fully screwed into the faceplate. Any ideas what this would be?
This is a common problem with the 1000 stick that I soon realized I need to eventually make a video about it. I would try adding a piece of paper under the motherboard side where the stick contacts are to try and push it up further. You can also try placing the jelly in different orientations. adding a spacer to the analog secure points to try and push it further down to the jelly. And of course gotta full screw in the left side to get a good idea if its going to work once fully back together, if the connection is not perfect it will drift even if the whole analog is not even connected. Lemme know how it goes

Even though it is an early OLED screen and it has some issues (doesn't completely turn off on all-black screens and I can see some black spots during screen transitions), the colours look great and it doesn't consume as much battery as an LCD screen.

I know some people's go to is the PS Vita, but for people trying to play ON a PSP/PSP Go? These videos are legendary!
Great video as a always dude! 200gb+ store is kinda over now I think about it lol.
I kinda just added it as a side dish, it will get it's own video eventually : )
Perfect Video for me. Make my PsP my Go To Hype Console for 2024 a time travel machine from the 2000's. A few Movies Anime..A Few Games from the Time and Albums.. this will be a blast

One of the best tutorials I've ever seen.
Use-maxxing your PC's storage haha. Nice. Man things have come a LONG way since making a Pandora Battery with a Steak Knife and pencil lead to make a Magic Memory Card haha.
lol

Protect that adapter with your life
I don't need any of this information but I like watch all these researches
Thanks a lot for all the info. New sub here a looking forward for more. :) I have Silver PSP 3000, a Black PSVita 1000 , and a PS Vita TV.

Another amazing video. Thanks.
Dann I’ve tries everything to go over 128GB. Today I’ll receive the Duo slot memory SD, I won’t expect anything of it after this video….
Thanks though, great video.
I've never seen a base 10 SD card, the dual SD card adaptor sounds like a bad idea from the start.
Yeah, why would I limit myself to the Memory Stick speeds when I could change the filesystem at full SD Card speeds?
Thank you for the kind words : )
I have 90gb on mine, best thing i ever did.
I remember selling my 2 kids for a 4G back in the day.
Amazing video as always. I wonder if on Adrenaline the max is 128gb or 500gb. That being said, I hope you can cover some PS Vita in the future. I love the Vita since its lke a PSP with better screen and dual sticks.

What's the benefit of flashing an image to the microSD before formatting it as opposed to only formatting it with the right settings?
Its a quick and easy way to bring it to a clean state no matter how it was formatted before, you should be able to use diskpart as well but its not as user friendly

i can confirm that the 128gb is the absolute limit on the PSP since on PS vita adrenaline files will display as corrupt pass that capacity, tho you can bypass it using adrenaline bubble manager
Thank you for this informative video!, but I would like the know if the JSO formatted games also work with adrenaline
Adrenaline runs on different CFW including ARK-4 so it should run without problem

Very good video!

Im very well aware of fake storage devices, even remember telling myself to add a segment for it, yet here I am because of time constraints and lack of energy after work I forgot to add it : |
ive been recomending 64/128 to people for years now, the higher capacities people claimed never seemed reliable or reasonable to get plus the structural issues with the dual adaptors
for awhile 128 also wasnt fully reliable, earlier on some cards just didnt work right, but if you got a card that worked it worked fine, but i couldnt recommend someone in a budget squeeze to get what was at the time a 100 dollar card when there was a chance of it not working so i still kept 64 as a strong recommendation for a long time

@@TotalKommando Aha, that's good to know. Thanks.
A very useful guide thank you a lot even thought it did make my mind blow up lol
9:00 I guess this why is one of reason my card (64gb sandisk red one) not working right after I copy game intro it and it keep said "data corrupted"
yo, when is the Ark 4 video coming?

I can confirm from personal experience that the dual adapters are crap, even when using 2 64GB cards - and I tried 5 of them. That’s probably why they are no longer made, aside from maybe EOL related to parts originally used to make them.
Nice video man, very informative. Do you plan make a video about the cmos capacitor leaks someday?
Thanks, 100% someday, just need to get some time off work and ill be back to full throttle
When Sony announced the PSP way back when they called it the Walkman of the 21st century as someone who wants to escape Spotify I want to get a PSP for music player that's partially why I am wondering how much space I can get for a memory card thank you
Hey man, how did you change the font on your PSP 3000 that appears at 17:52?
I didn't change anything here, and I dont recall running a theme on it
3:30 Actually sometimes (as in my case) the PSP says "the memory stick cannot be read" and when you go to format it, it says "format failed"
If its 128GB or below, its either a fake card, failed card, or the card isnt sitting properly in the adapter, anything above will infact not format inside the psp directly
i had this happen 0n my 256gb sd card, had to format through pc using the zz blank img file, and it worked fine after that
I didnt know that they even made 1.5TB cards. That mustve been released specifically for the steam deck or massive data hoarders who want all the space on their camera
or their phone : )
Did you test compression levels to find the best file size/performance ratio?
They are relativly similar 100-150 mb in difference so JSO is still my goto
@@TotalKommando Sorry, I meant the compression level for the compression type. At 19:50, when you show the compressor window, there's a box for compression level, currently set at 9 (best compression). I wondered what setting it to 8,7, 6, or possibly even 5 might do for the file size/performance.
@@DurgisFlak Ahh Yea, I plan to do a deeper dive on this later in a future video. As of right now, I have not done any tests on different compressions.

hey do you know a good guide to make a battery mod on a psp 3000? I have the pcb from a OEM 1200mah battery and I was planing on removing the UMD drive in order to increase the batery life. Thank you!
You can browse reddit but I will eventually have a video about it
Im fixing up PSPs and putting templated SD cards in them, with all the same games etc.
Is there an easy way to make a drive image and then quickly copy that onto the SD?
You could use cloning / backup / imaging tools such as:
- Mini Tool ( they got a few different tools ) free
- Lazesoft ( works but usually slower than the others ) also free
- I think you could use one of these to create an image and then use rufus to quickly write it
so the best option is a 128gb sandisk ultra a1 memory card?
yep
I still have the Dual memory card slot adapter but somehow slot 1 the front one doesn't recognized
these dual card adapters are also insanely fragile, i had one crack open after a couple dozen insert cycles, and i no longer trusted the connection to be good so i downgraded to a single slot adapter and a single 32gb card
i gotta ask, when buying your psp shells where to do you buy them from? I've been having bad luck finding good ones out there
also great video really helped me budget out with what i was already working with to really stretch out my memory card
AliExpress, but most of these shells come from the same factories so they are mostly bad, some models are better than others
i think 128 gb is more then enough for games /emulators and so on..
i only use a 64 gb card and never reached the limit.
i also see no sense i putting on thousands of games, which at the end you don t play at all.
only my 5 cents..
1:16 Why didn't you show the total space available on the PSP at that point by pressing the information button?
because the sd card was empty, there were no files loaded
